The Cypriot aviation sector has welcomed the launch of Airtravel Aviation Academy, hailed as the first and only International Air Transport Association (IATA) authorised training centre in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region. Evros Konsolos, managing director, Airtravel Aviation Academy, commented, “We work hard to attract students from the surrounding area, but mainly to provide more supplies to young Cypriots who unfortunately face the hard issue of unemployment.” Marios Hannides, director general, Cyprus Tourism Organisation, added that the need of the domestic market for education in related professions is growing, and the academy offers new opportunities in vocational training for students interested in the tourism industry.

Cities of Tomorrow: Investing in Europe

Constantinos Yiorkadjis, mayor, Nicosia, participated in the ‘Cities of Tomorrow: Investing in Europe’ (CiTIEs) conference which was organised by the European Commission (EC) in Brussels between February 17 - 18, and focused on the European Union’s urban policy and the development of a European urban agenda. Among the participants at the event were José Manuel Barroso, president, EC, and Johannes Hahn, commissioner for regional policy, EC. With two thirds of European citizens living in cities, the conference aimed to discuss ways that will give the floor to city authorities in the formulation of European policies, in order to understand the needs of urban areas for better coordination. This is to play a catalytic role in tackling issues such as climate change, unemployment and social exclusion.

Aviation Traffic Still Disappointing

According to ACI EUROPE’s air traffic results, passenger movements in France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece and Cyprus remained negative in November 2013. The overall traffic growth at Europe’s airports reached 3.5 percent compared to November 2012, with European Union (EU) airports showing an average expansion of 2.2 percent and non-EU airports registering an average increase of 8.4 percent, when compared with the same month in 2012. Airports in Ireland, Malta and Portugal enjoyed significant growth, along with many in Eastern Europe. Spanish hubs continued to see improving performance and many in the UK and Benelux also posted positive figures.

A Casino Resort Offers Multiple Rewards Speaking at the ‘Casino in Cyprus – Dountdown’ conference in Larnaca, Haris Loizides, chairman, Cyprus Hotel Association (CHA), welcomed the decision for an intergraded casino resort on the island, saying, “This is an acceptable global tourism activity which provides entertainment to the quality visitor and enriches the tourist product of each country.” He added that the benefits for Cyprus are expected to be multiple, as the resort would increase the state’s income and boost tourist arrivals. Referring to a study that indicated that additional casino tourist arrivals to the island could reach 500,000 annually, Loizides also pointed out that incoming tourism to neighbouring Greece surged by 450,000 visitors who were drawn from Israel alone. “We fully share the government’s objective to have a credible international process that will attract international investor interest in creating such a high-standard casino resort to draw focus from the entire Eastern Mediterranean region, the Middle East and the Arab Gulf,” Loizides concluded.

Passenger Arrivals Increased in 2012 Cyprus’ Statistical Service has released its annual Transport Statistics report for 2012, showing a notable rise in passenger numbers to the island. According to the publication, which provides detailed information on the economic developments of the broad transport sector as well as data on shipping and aviation activities and transportation of goods and passengers, traveller numbers through the country’s airports increased from 3,796,768 in 2011 to 3,828,379 in 2012, despite civil aircraft landings slightly decreasing from 30,864 in 2011 to 30,141 in 2012. During the year under review, a total of 3,034 vessels arrived at the various ports of the island compared to 3,319 in 2011, with 2,168 or 71.5 percent of these calling at Limassol port, 631 or 20.8 percent at Larnaca and 235 ships at other ports. CHANGE, COOPERATION and INNOVATION Regional and international tourism and aviation experts gathered together at the recent ‘Air Connectivity Development for Cyprus through Change, Cooperation and Innovation’ conference, organised by Hermes Airports in Nicosia, to debate the most pressing issues facing the Cypriot tourism industry. promotion does not necessarily mean additional cost, rather commitment and willingness to act. AND ACTION!

Air Connectivity Development for Cyprus through Change, Cooperation and Innovation

 Rita Kasziba writes

“C

yprus has a fantastic tourism product, and you know what to do; now it is time to do it,” exclaimed Jean-Clause Baumgarten, CEO, Crewe Associates, former president of the World Travel & Tourism Council in his closing speech to Cypriot tourism industry stakeholders, encapsulating in one sentence the principal conclusion of the conference, and sending a timely message to the island’s tourism sector. The day started on a positive note with Wes Porter, CEO, Hermes Airports, the operator of Cyprus’ two international airports, highlighting the tourism industry’s vital role in the country’s socio-economic development, and noting that the island enjoys a strategic location on the world map, a mere five-hour flight away for 10 million potential visitors. Much anticipated developments over the next five years, including the further liberalisation of the aviation industry and stronger air links, should significantly benefit Cyprus, however, the industry needs to shape a common strategy and work together within the framework of a strategic business plan towards a common goal: to bring more visitors to the island. “Cyprus relies heavily on the development of air connectivity in order to sustain year-round tourist arrivals as this is considered as one of the main

MARCH 2014

drivers of economic growth,” stressed Tasos Mitsopoulos, minister of communications and works, Cyprus, noting that the past years have seen a shift in air travel to the island, as traditional legacy carriers and charter operators have, to a certain degree, been displaced by low-cost carriers on some intraEuropean Union (EU) routes. In light of these developments, the ministry continues to work in close collaboration with Hermes Airports to encourage airlines, both within the EU as well as from third countries, to operate to Cyprus by initiating bilateral agreements with non-EU countries and lifting restrictions on charter services. INNOVATION AND IMPLEMENTATION Reinventing Cyprus in order to appeal to a broader audience was a key topic at the conference, with experts giving their views on how to identify new markets and adopt innovative ideas in order to distinguish the destination from its competitors. “Cyprus needs to reinvent itself. The island used to be promoted as a singular destination, it is however changing, and Cyprus now needs to market itself as a regional hub, where travellers can pass through on their way to other destinations and they are encouraged to discover the experience on offer along the way. […] It is crucial to get a team of promoters together, visit these markets and explain what Cyprus is about,” stressed Baumgarten, saying that effective

Turning words into action is the key motive behind the recently launched Cyprus-project, which aims to increase visitor numbers from the current 2.4 million to three million within the next five years. As Zacharias Ioannides, director general, Cyprus Hotel Association, explained, since the record-high figures in 2001, when arrivals reached 2.7 million, Cyprus has experienced a downward trend and while during the peak summer season monthly figures rise to 350,000, between December and February, the island receives only 50,000 – 60,000 tourists. To realise this vision, arrivals from the UK are envisioned to rise from one million to 1.5 million, from Germany from 105,000 to 500,000, from Russia and the CIS from 600,000 to one million, from Ukraine from 35,000 to 100,000, from Israel from 40,000 to 100,000 and from the Middle East and the Gulf region from 55,000 to 200,000. Zacharias also remarked on the growing significance on the BRICS countries and Turkey, promising markets which are yet to be tapped into by Cyprus. Germany remains the project’s foremost target. While in 1997, arrivals from the European country rose to 250,000, figures plummeted to 105,000 in 2013 as Germans opted for other Mediterranean destinations partly due to the limited air travel options. Emphasising Cyprus’ plentiful competitive advantages is one of the key objectives of the programme, along with the adoption of open skies agreements, the simplification of the visa issuance process, the encouragement of airlines and tour operators to expand their services on the island year-round and the improvement of hotel services. In addition, the project aims to involve the local authorities in the enrichment of the country’s tourism product through cultural and sports events, and the creation of casinos, golf courses, health and wellness centres and other thematic facilities. It is hoped that these steps, which all together, when supported by both the private and public sector, will help reinvent the Cypriot tourism industry and enhance the island’s competitiveness on the global stage.

Niche Market Shows Potential for Economic Recovery

Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2013

At an informal meeting of European sports-related industries, Androulla Vassiliou, commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism, sport, media and youth, European Commission, lauded sporting activities, saying that the sector has the potential to support development, as well as to aid Europe’s economic recovery as a whole. The sporting niche represents a significant and fastgrowing industry, contributing 1.76 percent to the European Union-wide gross value added and 2.12 percent to employment in 2011. Vassiliou revealed that since 2006, member states and experts have been working on the development of a common European approach for measuring the economic impact of sport, which has resulted in a harmonised framework for creating sport satellite accounts which provide detailed macro-economic statistics about the sport economy. According to Vassiliou, the current focus on the health and social dimension of sport has provided the impetus to work on the development of a European Week of Sport set to take place in 2015.

Sports Tourism on the Rise Athletic tourism is one of Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO)’s priorities within the framework of boosting alternative tourism forms. The sector is on an upward trend since, according to the organisation’s data, in 2012 the number of sport visitors to Cyprus increased by 22 percent compared to 2011. “Considering only the four sports which were included in the survey [commissioned by CTO] – football, cycling, swimming and track and field – revenues are estimated at EUR24 million in 2012,” revealed Annita Demetriadou, director of tourism, strategy and research, CTO. She explained that sports tourism, whether this refers to amateur individual travellers or professional teams visiting the island for training, contributes to the development of winter tourism, attracts high-net-worth visitors, enriches the product on offer and improves Cyprus’ competitiveness. Cyprus Sports Organisation is also poised to play a huge role in strengthening sports tourism in the country, and has revealed that shooting, basketball, archery and taekwondo all need further promotion. A glasses-free 3D technology is on trial at London Heathrow Airport in bid to help reduce the number of prohibited items placed in hand baggage, and ensure a hassle-free experience at the UK hub. The new technology is being tested in the departure security zone at Terminal 1 where large screens display 3D images of items that are not permitted through security such as scissors, tweezers and liquids over 100ml. Passengers are also advised how to dispose of the items in the recycling bins before putting their luggage through the scanner. In case banned items are identified during the scan the bag is rejected and has to be hand searched by a security officer. Richard Harding, head of IT innovation, London Heathrow Airport, explained, “Helping prepare passengers for security saves them time and reduces the chance of having their bag searched. 3D technology is the latest way to help get this message across.”

Cyprus to Consider Condo Hotel Option

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Cyprus has released a report aiming to bring to attention key issues to be considered in the development of mixed-use tourist establishments such as condo hotels. The article urges businesses and hoteliers to consider areas such as rental management contracts, seasonality, management fees and operating expenses, branding, tour operators’ reactions and legalities before proceeding with such an investment. Potential benefits that could arise from the development of mixed use/condo hotels for the Cypriot economy were underlined as the creation of new jobs, and financing and securing repeat tourism.

Waste Mapping Guidance for Hotels Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative and The Travel Foundation have joined forces to launch a guidance document to highlight the financial and environmental benefits of undertaking waste mapping at hotels and other organisations across the Cypriot tourism industry. Waste mapping enables institutions to indentify the sources, types and quantities of rubbish they produce and prioritise areas where simple actions can be taken to minimise this, save money and achieve lasting sustainable waste management. The guide has been structured to take travel professionals through the key steps in implementing an effective waste mapping process and equip them with the tools needed to introduce and implement these techniques, to identify and quantify opportunities to implement low or no cost measures in order to prevent and reduce waste and save money. “[Waste mapping is] an important and practical step in promoting sustainable practices within the on-going business operation of the Cypriot tourist enterprises,” underlined Marios Hannides, director general, CTO, calling on business to embrace the initiative.

Paphos CHA Meets Experts on Energy Within the framework of waste management for hotel units, the Paphos committee of the Cyprus Hotel Association (CHA) met with a team of specialists in order to discuss actions to put the initiative in motion. Present to assist the effort, Michalis Loizides, director, ISOTECH, informed attendees about European directives, the opportunities which exist for funding from the European Union (EU), and also explained why hotel waste is not rubbish but raw material. Alexandros Michaelides, executive chairman, TALOS Development Organisation, referred to the unspent funds from the EU suggesting that CHA’s interest in hotel waste management can become a reality. However he reminded that time limits are very strict and a concrete proposal must be prepared soon. Themis Philippides, chairman, Paphos district committee, CHA, commented that contacts with all parties involved will continue because the benefits of the initiative will be huge not only hoteliers but for the society and the country in general.

ELENA TANOU

CEO, Hermes Airports.

President, Nicosia Tourism Board.

“Following the financial shock of 2013, Cyprus is now regrouping its powers. Hermes Airports, as the operator of the two international airports of the country, is considered to be a valuable partner in Cyprus’ tourism value chain. [...] Although we have many challenges yet to overcome, there is no doubt that by having a mutually agreed goal, through cooperation, innovation and change where needed, we will make aviation and tourism one of the driving forces for the recovery of the Cyprus economy. We are confident that we can get there together.”

ANTONIS ORTHODOXOU CEO, Orthodoxou Aviation.

“We strongly believe that this collaboration [between Orthodoxou Aviation and Arkia Airlines] will be very important for the Cypriot economy. Further to the business relationships that have been developed over the last two years with the neighbouring country, we expect that Arkia Airlines will play an important role in these relations being further strengthened. Through this collaboration Arkia will be an additional option for passengers to travel from Larnaca to Tel Aviv for recreational and professional reasons.”

“Nicosia has been the island’s capital since the 11th century. Over the centuries, history itself has endowed its inhabitants with a valuable multi-cultural way of thinking that is particularly important nowadays. Today Nicosia is like a fascinating journey through time - with buildings of state-of-the-art architectural design just a few steps away from streets and neighbourhoods redolent with the atmosphere of a different period in every corner. Nicosia remains the only divided capital in Europe. This gives a particular strength and depth to all its characteristics. The past has learned to live with the future.”

LAKIS AVRAAMIDES Manager, Ayia Napa - Protaras - Famagusta Region Tourism Board.

“We have to keep our visitors happy so that they return because a happy tourist is a returning tourist. In order to maintain our feeder markets, we do not need to spend money but spend some of our energy and act accordingly. It is the small things that can enhance the family atmosphere and what we want is to make our visitors feel comfortable and not be annoyed by street vendors or the loud music which goes on until the crack of dawn. These are the priorities of the municipalities which will be addressed with the assistance of the tourism board.”

Q & A with Orestis Rossides Cyprus has long established itself as a popular destination for British holiday-makers, offering a variety of activities and experiences for visitors of all ages. Orestis Rossides, director, London office, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), reflects on the importance of this market in these challenging times.

Travel Trade Cyprus: How have arrivals from the UK to Cyprus changed over the past years, and to what do you attribute this trend? Orestis Rossides: We had a steady growth in arrivals to Cyprus from the UK in the 1990’s due to the advent of charter flights and a strong British Pound. In the last few years there has been a consolidation of around 900,000 UK visitors to Cyprus. Within this trend we have seen the development of higher yield traffic such as meetings and incentives, weddings and honeymoons, spa tourism, golf, cycling and special interest activities.

do you promote Cyprus in the UK? In your opinion, how important is it to distinguish the island from other Mediterranean destinations in order to maintain high visitor numbers? Travel Trade Cyprus: CTO’s UK office has long been engaged in a various activities. The recently launched virtual fam trip to Cyprus or the cooking event, held in collaboration with the Association of Greek and Cypriot Travel Agents are great examples. What are your main targets for this year? Orestis Rossides: According to the latest statistics for 2013 we had a good recovery in UK visitors in the last three months of 2013. Our aim is to continue to promote Cyprus in an innovative way, highlighting important aspects of our product which in our view remain underappreciated. For example, road cycling along the whole coast, in the spring, could be a major success. The new Troodos cycling trail could offer unique thrills to mountain-biking enthusiasts. The newly created marine parks should also attract a great deal of interest among scuba-diving aficionados. [I would like to conclude by pointing out that] this month, Lillian Panayi [assistant director, London office, CTO], an easily recognisable name in the UK travel industry, and myself are celebrating 25 years of working together in serving the UK travel trade.

Travel Trade Cyprus: In your opinion, what makes the UK one of the most important markets for Cyprus?

Travel Trade Cyprus: Rich in history, culture and natural beauty, Cyprus continues to attract visitors in search of inspiration, relaxation as well as entertainment. While younger travellers are often lured by Agia Napa’s bustling nightlife, others arrive to the island to explore its historical and cultural wonders in Paphos and Limassol. Meanwhile, others dream about getting married or spending their honeymoon on the ‘island of Aphrodite’. How

There is a variety of things to do within a short distance. For example you can get from zero to above 1,800m in less than an hour. Cyprus is also rich in archaeological sites and offers excellent driving possibilities and delicious food. In our effort to differentiate our product we emphasise the above characteristics to highlight the variety offered to visitors within our compact island.
