Criteria for Promotion (Academic Rank) Criterion 1 . Excellence in Teaching Teaching is the central focus of the American University in Dubai. Teaching encompasses not only classroom performance, but also a mastery of the scholarship that informs excellent teaching and its application to the personal and professional development of students. Documentation: Evidence of excellence in teaching may be documented through a variety of means, including but not limited to the following: • Special individual recognition for teaching accomplishments; • Student Course Evaluations. This evidence includes quantitative summaries from student surveys, as well as student comments; • Assessments from former students regarding the candidate’s instructional excellence; • Performance of students on external uniform examinations; • Documentation of student performance in the workplace that is directly related to the instructional area(s) of the candidate; • Peer evaluation. This evidence includes assessments by colleagues or supervisors; • Curriculum. This evidence includes courses developed or revised, innovative instructional techniques or materials, or creative contributions to the learning process; • Publications related to teaching, such as textbooks, articles, workbooks, or copyrighted teaching materials; • Selection for special teaching activities within or outside the university. Criterion 2 . Scholarly, Creative, and Professional Activities Scholarly, creative, and professional activities are essential to the ongoing vitality of faculty’s involvement in the learning process. Through self-enrichment, faculty enhance their depth of knowledge, expertise, and perspectives on their disciplines and consequently augments their contribution to the classroom and the university community. Scholarly, creative, and professional activities at AUD include: activities that involve studious inquiry, disciplinary examination, creative endeavors, new applications of theory, or experimental initiatives that nurture and advance the faculty member’s disciplinary expertise. Documentation: Evidence of Excellence in Scholarly, Creative, and Professional Activities may be documented through a variety of means, which include but are not limited to the following: Scholarly contribution to academic and professional knowledge: • books published or accepted for publication • book chapters published or accepted for publication • editorship of books or compendiums or readings • papers published in refereed journals • papers published in refereed conference proceedings • papers presented at refereed conferences • papers blind-reviewed for refereed journal, conference, or other universities • discussant/session chairs at refereed conferences • papers published in non-refereed journals/conference proceedings • papers presented at non-refereed conferences or professional association meetings AUD .
