Patronage by the Ministry for Health of Catalonia Catalonia and its capital, Barcelona, are historically places which welcome people from diverse cultures, playing a part in the establishment of their open and multicultural identity. This open approach has been the catalyst for a pursuit of excellence, to achieve a high level of scientific and technical growth in a multitude of sectors. It is specifically the health field which is, in the main, attributable to the success of Barcelona being recognised as a centre of excellence on a world scale. Medical knowledge, innovation, technological growth and research are one of the pillars which characterise the quality of the medical services of Catalonia. There is a long and strong tradition in Catalonia of receiving patients from all over Spain, from Europe, from Latin America and from the Arab Nations. It should be noted that, recently, in addition to these countries, there are patients coming from the United States of America and also from Russian Federation. Tourist figures seen over the last year in Catalonia far exceed sixteen million, a figure double that of the Catalan population. This fact was the catalyst for enabling the Catalan health care system to be able to provide a quality service and response to the needs of those citizens visiting us. The hosting of the EMTC 2011 in Barcelona is an unbeatable occasion to discover the capabilities of Catalan work, to share experiences with the most notable people in the sector, at the same time as having the chance to enjoy a unique cultural, urban, gastronomic and climatic environment. For this reason, we hope you will be able to attend and we look forward to seeing you in Barcelona!

Dr. Boi Ruiz, Minister for Health. Government of Catalonia

The support and patronage of the Ministry of Enterprise and Labour There is a growing concern about the European health systems as they have to cope with in-creasing costs. We welcome innovative solutions about healthcare, discussed in different scenarios and we are eager to learn as well as to contribute to any improvement in the field of medical tourism. There are a variety of reasons as to why the patients choose Barcelona but it emphasizes the quality and excellence of its medical centres and services. Catalonia’s experience in the treatment of patients from diverse origins must also be mentioned, given the fact that it is one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. Catalonia offers a wide network of medical centres that are attracting patients from many different countries. Furthermore we have enterprises directly linked to the medical tourism which offer high quality services and equipments. For all these reasons, Catalonia is becoming an international cluster of medical tourism. We have in front of us new paradigms for the movement of people looking for destinations to improve their health and welfare and Barcelona has the commitment and the vocation to be one of the capitals of medical excellence. The EMTC2011 is the platform to connect health tourism solutions to the people and we are deeply honoured to welcome the international community in Barcelona.

F. Xavier Mena, Minister of Enterprise and Labour. Government of Catalonia

The support and patronage of the Catalan Tourist Board Tourism in our days has identified a new component: health. Increasing number of medical travellers and wellness tourists are challenging the traditional structures and destinations with a growing demand for health services and innovative solutions for their well-being. Barcelona and Catalonia have proven to be developing this sector professionally and with high quality standards. We invite the industry leaders in medical travel and health and wellness tourism to make use of our offer: attend the European Medical Travel Conference 2011 and join our cooperation network. I look forward to meeting you in Barcelona!

Marian Muro , Chief Executive Vice- President of the Catalan Tourist Board

The Voice of the Chairman Every year the European Medical Travel Conference is held in another country of the EU, bringing together the international community of the medical travel industry and the political representatives of various health care systems and policies. We have put together also for the Barcelona event, a prominent speaker academy, attractive topics and a perfect exhibition site and networking system. The medical travel has become a worldwide phenomenon, yet the focus points and patient streams tend to concentrate on certain destinations. We analyze the attractors, the offers, the quality, the case management and look also into the spa and medical wellness business. The EMTC 2011 is the year`s event which you cannot afford to miss.

Dr. Uwe Klein, Chairman and Organizer of the EMTC 2011

He will respond: “What will bring telemedicine in the future, and what is the value added for medical travel organizations?”

Although some claim that people are now choosing “globally”, what we are seeing is that they choose “regionally”. “Regarding 'Europe' as a Destination” is the title of his lecture, and, as he outlines, there is still a substantial amount of uncertainty in the term “Global Healthcare”.

Kay F. Weipert is the Managing Director of Med2Heal, a medical agency which plans and organizes complete treatment packages in Germany for patients from abroad.
