This poster is an extension of a project produced for my MA entitled Say What You See, which uses photography as a visual reminder of where some of our words for colours originate. In response to the Courtaulds sample shades the project has developed a new direction. The shade sample names have been paired with photographs of objects of the same name, from the original book. The resulting pair of posters illustrates the relationships between the colour, the name, the object and the sample. Neither the samples nor the photographs aim to be a definitive and accurate representation of the colours of the objects they depict and reference. However they allow for comparison and insight into the creative interpretation of colour naming terms, reflecting on the complex relationship between colour and language.
