Living in Rincón, you get to meet interesting people from all over the world! Recently I met an artist from Ukraine by the name of Yulia Logvynenko. We got to talking and sharing stories about life and the similarities between Ukraine and Puerto Rico. Soon enough, she told me she was an artist and showed me some of her unique, bright, and colorful watercolor paintings. I absolutely loved how the natural beauty of the Island was reflected in her art. Below I share a bit about Yulia Logvynenko for the readers of El Coquí of Rincón Magazine.

¡Al vivir en Rincón, puedes conocer gente interesante de todo el mundo!

Recientemente conocí a una artista de Ucrania llamada Yulia Logvynenko.

Empezamos a hablar y compartir historias sobre la vida y las similitudes entre Ucrania y Puerto Rico. Muy pronto, me dijo que era artista y me mostró algunas de sus únicas, brillantes y coloridas pinturas de acuarela.

Me encantó cómo se reflejaba en su arte la belleza natural de la isla.

A continuación les comparto un poco sobre Yulia Logvynenko para los lectores de El Coquí of Rincón.

Q: I would like to know more about you; where were you born and raised?

What was your childhood/early life like?

P: Me gustaría saber más sobre ti; dónde naciste y dónde creciste? ¿Cómo fue tu infancia y primeros años de vida?

A: I was born and raised in Ukraine and immigrated to the US at 20. I had quite an eventful childhood that included spending a lot of time in nature, summers by the Black Sea, visiting many museums, historical sites, art, and classical music events. There were challenges, of course as well, but who does not have them. Our mom (I have an older brother who is a monk now) played a significant role in our education by introducing us to classical children’s literature very early. Which I think made reading and self-educating a big part of our later lives. My dad being a self-taught engineer genius with a rebellious personality, definitely added that pinch of curiosity about life, smart street mindset, and need for constant adventures into my brother and my lives. My parents’ social circle included a number of established artists, so seeing that around since an early age definitely influenced me.

R: Nací y crecí en Ucrania y emigré a los EE. UU. A los 20. Tuve una infancia bastante memorable que incluyó pasar mucho tiempo en la naturaleza, veranos en el Mar Negro, visitas a muchos museos, sitios históricos, arte, música clásica y eventos musicales. También hubo desafíos, por supuesto, pero quién no los tiene. Nuestra madre (tengo un hermano mayor que ahora es monje) jugó un papel importante en nuestra educación al presentarnos la literatura infantil clásica desde muy temprano. Lo que creo que hizo que la lectura y la autoeducación fueran una gran parte de nuestras vidas posteriores. Mi padre, que era un genio ingeniero autodidacta con una personalidad rebelde, definitivamente agregó esa pizca de curiosidad por la vida, una mentalidad con inteligencia callejera y la necesidad de aventuras constantes en mi hermano y en mi.

El círculo social de mis padres incluía una serie de artistas establecidos, por lo que ver eso desde una edad temprana definitivamente me influyó.

Además, Ucrania y PR son muy parecidos. Sí, el clima es diferente: Ucrania tiene todas las estaciones, mientras que RP es tropical. Pero la gente es tan similar. Tanto los ucranianos como los puertorriqueños son muy cálidos, hospitalarios y muy orientados a la familia. Y la cultura de la comida y la fiesta lo es todo en ambos lugares: las personas son cocineros fenomenales, y ¡saben cómo divertirse! Todos se conocen en los vecindarios y somos amigos de nuestros vecinos. Ese no es el caso en los EE. UU.

Also, Ukraine and PR are very much alike. Yes, the climate is different Ukraine has all the seasons while PR is tropical. But the people are so similar.

Both Ukrainian and Puerto Rican people are very warm and hospitable and very family-oriented. And food and party culture is everything in both places - people are phenomenal cooks, and boy, we know how to party!

Everyone knows each other in the neighborhoods, and we are friends with our neighbors. That’s not much of a thing in the US.

Q: When did you first start creating art? What were you inspired by?

A: I was doodling and trying to draw everything and anything since I can remember. It’s hard to say the inspiration back then - it felt like I had that urge to draw and paint, so I was just executing it. But I had a thing for drawing exotic fish and mermaids when I was little. My dad took me to an art program for children after drawing a tall bird (something between an ostrich and a rooster) on the kitchen wall. After I was done with that, my dad took me to an art school that I attended for 4 years, being the youngest in the class. At that school, you must follow a certain program as a student, which wasn’t bringing much content to me because I was drawn to brighter colors and geometric shapes. There, we were instructed to do watercolor still life or pencil/pastels portraits, which I found boring for the most part. I really liked art history and sculpture classes, though learning about different painters and styles was very compelling. That’s when I discovered Vasilly Kandinsky, whose painting style and paintings resonated deeply with my visions. Also, I started having “visions” for the paintings around the age of 12. But of course, I wasn’t fully understanding and appreciating the importance of it.

Q: When did you first come to Puerto Rico and Rincón?

A: I first came to PR (San Juan area) in the Spring of 2019 and stayed for 3 months. It was fascinating because I traveled to the Caribbean area for scuba diving (Jamaica) before, but it felt different. And PR felt like home right away. At first, I had no idea why, but then I could see all those similarities between PR and Ukraine I mentioned above, and it all started making sense.

I came to Aguada/Rincón almost a year later - in April of 2020. I was escaping the New York City environment (and generally city environment) with the pandemics being in bloom back then and thought I’d only stay for a few months. But I just fell in love with all the beautiful and almost untouched nature sites here on the Island’s west side. And all the people I’ve met - it really gave me that sense of warm and fun community I was so in need of.

Q: How has the Island affected your life?

A: I think the same way it did for everyone else. I am empathetic towards people, energies, and the environment, so being close to the ocean definitely brought more peace, joy, and mental clarity. I prefer to have more nature than the city, and I’m certainly finding it in the Rincón area. And if you compare the level of happiness of people in New York/New Jersey and Rincón - you will see a considerable difference (NY/NJ are not winning). I am also prone to anxiety, but having my long beach walks and swimming/snorkeling is definitely a great benefit for eliminating anxiety and improving my overall health.

P: ¿Cuándo empezaste a crear arte? ¿Qué te inspiró?

R: Estaba garabateando y tratando de dibujar todo y cualquier cosa desde que tengo memoria. Es difícil decir la inspiración en ese entonces, sentí que tenía la necesidad de dibujar y pintar, así que simplemente lo estaba ejecutando. Pero me gustaba dibujar peces exóticos y sirenas cuando era pequeña. Mi papá me llevó a un programa de arte para niños después de dibujar un pájaro alto (algo entre un avestruz y un gallo) en la pared de la cocina. Después de que terminé con eso, mi papá me llevó a una escuela de arte a la que asistí durante 4 años, siendo el más joven de la clase.

En esa escuela, debes seguir cierto programa como estudiante, que no me atraía mucho porque me atraían los colores más brillantes y las formas geométricas. Allí, nos dijeron que hiciéramos bodegones en acuarela o retratos a lápiz / pastel, lo que me pareció muy aburrido en su mayoría. Me gustaron mucho las clases de historia del arte y escultura, aunque aprender sobre diferentes pintores y estilos fue muy interesante. Fue entonces cuando descubrí a Vasilly Kandinsky, cuyo estilo de pintura y pinturas resonaron profundamente con mis visiones. Además, comencé a tener “visiones” de las pinturas alrededor de los 12 años. Pero, por supuesto, no entendía ni apreciaba completamente la importancia de esto.

P: ¿Cuándo visitaste por primera vez a Puerto Rico y Rincón?

R: Vine por primera vez a PR (área de San Juan) en la primavera del 2019 y me quedé por 3 meses. Fue fascinante porque había viajado antes al área del Caribe para bucear en Jamaica, pero me sentí diferente. Y PR se sintió como si estuviera en casa de inmediato. Al principio, no tenía idea de por qué, pero luego pude ver todas esas similitudes entre PR y Ucrania que mencioné anteriormente, y todo comenzó a tener sentido.

Vine a Aguada / Rincón casi un año después, en abril de 2020. Estaba intentando escapar del entorno de la ciudad de Nueva York (y el entorno urbano en general) y con la pandemia en todo su apogeo, pensé que sólo me quedaría unos meses. Pero me enamoré de todos los hermosos sitios naturales y casi vírgenes en la área oeste de la isla. Y toda la gente que he conocido, realmente me dio esa sensación de comunidad cálida y divertida que tanto necesitaba.

P: ¿Cómo te ha afectado la isla en tu vida?

R: Creo que igual que a todos los demás. Siento empatía por las personas, las energías y el medio ambiente, por lo que estar cerca del océano definitivamente me trajo paz, alegría y claridad mental. Prefiero tener más naturaleza que ciudad, y ciertamente la encuentro en la zona de Rincón. Y si comparas el nivel de felicidad de las personas en Nueva York o Nueva Jersey y Rincón, verás una gran diferencia (NY / NJ no están ganando). También soy propensa a la ansiedad, pero tener mis largas caminatas por la playa y detenerme nadar y bucear es definitivamente un gran beneficio para eliminar la ansiedad y mejorar mi salud en general.

P: ¿Cómo han inspirado las relaciones públicas y Rincón tu arte?

Q: How has PR and Rincón inspired your art?

A: I can definitely see the influence (and you will as well if you take a closer look). I see a beautiful coral or a fish or a flower or even a sunset, and how can I not get inspired to bring the spirit and colors to my paintings.

Sometimes I have a “vision” for a painting when I’m floating on my back in the ocean or when I’m walking at the beach. And I take it as a beginning for the painting and then add all the other elements. Also, because I am a happier person now living in this beautiful place - it shows in my paintings.

Honestly, sometimes when I’m sad and don’t have the energy to start a new painting - I just open the portfolio with the originals of my paintings and look through them. And all those colors just make me feel better. Which I think is the ultimate role of art - to make people feel better and bring joy.

One of my favorite contemporary artists is Banksy, and he said, “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” And when I saw that quote - I thought - Mr. Bansky is so right-what he said it is so simple yet so true and obvious. But I guess I find myself more on a “comforting” side - just always had that desire to make people and animals feel better and happier, for I have been through a lot of disturbing times and events and don’t like seeing others suffering.

R: Definitivamente puedo ver la influencia (y tú también lo verás si miras más de cerca). Veo un hermoso coral, un pez o una flor o incluso una puesta de sol, y cómo no inspirarse para llevar el espíritu y los colores a mis pinturas.

A veces tengo una “visión” de una pintura cuando estoy flotando boca arriba en la playa o cuando camino por la costa. Y lo tomo como un comienzo para la pintura y luego agrego todos los demás elementos. Además, porque ahora soy una persona más feliz viviendo en este hermoso lugar, se nota en mis pinturas. Honestamente, a veces, cuando estoy triste y no tengo la energía para comenzar una nueva pintura, simplemente abro el portafolio con los originales de mis pinturas y las reviso. Y todos esos colores me hacen sentir mejor. Creo que es el papel fundamental del arte: hacer que la gente se sienta mejor y brindar alegría. Uno de mis artistas contemporáneos favoritos es Banksy, y dijo: “El arte debe consolar a los perturbados y perturbar a los que se sienten cómodos”. Y cuando vi esa cita, pensé, el Sr. Bansky tiene tanta razón, lo que dijo es tan simple pero tan cierto y obvio. Pero supongo que me encuentro más en el lado “reconfortante” - siempre tuve ese deseo de hacer que las personas y los animales se sintieran mejor y más felices, porque he pasado por muchos momentos y eventos perturbadores y no me gusta ver a otros sufrir.

Rincón, Puerto Rico, is known for its surf, beaches, and natural beauty. However, many don’t know that it has quite a historical past. This story recounts the discovery of the Rincón Astrolabe, a bronze device used by the Spanish in the 17th century to calculate latitude by measuring the sun’s altitude over the horizon.

The discovery of the Rincón Astrolabe In July of 2021, I interviewed Richard Fitzgerald, a well-known artist and member of Rincón’s community since the early ‘70s. He told me the story….or more like the drama of the Rincón astrolabe in an over two-hour interview.

In the summer of 1987, Richard worked on a dive boat at the Rincón marina. One day while he was taking an American couple to Barrio Barrero to teach them how to dive, he suddenly experienced motor problems in the shallow waters off the Balneario area and stopped to check. While fixing the motor, he noticed a dark spot where there was normally sand. He threw his snorkeling mask on to investigate and what he found was a pile of river rocks. These rocks were a ballast pile. Ballast rocks were used back in the day to provide stability to nautical vessels. He then dove down again and found a piece of pottery and a straight line of seagrass growing in the sand. He whisked away from the sand and grass and uncovered a cannon. That was it; he knew he had discovered something incredible.

He later returned with friends Bill Embree, who became his partner in the early excavation, and his friend from Mayagüez Jaime Braulio, who was a lead diver on the island and who had experience diving shipwrecks in the past. In addition, he brought other friends Michael T and Frank Anderson (Moondog), to help. Jaime brought special lift bags to remove the cannons from the ocean floor and load them onto trucks. Jaime also brought in members from a professional club in San Juan, however after Richard discovered them secretly taking items from the site, he promptly stopped them.

Richard then brought in Harry Hawk. He had excellent equipment for diving, filming, and removing sand. According to Richard, he

En el verano de 1987, Richard trabajó en un barco de buceo en la Marina de Rincón. Un día, mientras llevaba a una pareja estadounidense al Barrio Barrero para enseñarles a bucear, tuvo problemas con el motor en las aguas poco profundas del Balneario y se detuvo a revisar. Mientras arreglaba el motor, notó una mancha oscura donde normalmente había arena. Se puso su máscara de snorkel para investigar y lo que encontró fue un montón de rocas de río. was even there filming when the actual astrolabe was found and tried to take it and claim it as his discovery. He then tried to buy the astrolabe from Richard for nine thousand dollars, and Richard refused, claiming it was the patrimony of the people of Puerto Rico. Harry even tried to take Richard to court, this dragged on for twenty years and amounted to nothing.

How and who actually found it?

According to Richard, they had the area of the shipwreck divided into sections with four divers carefully searching each section they were assigned to. Michael T had the luck that his section was the one where the astrolabe was buried.

Then the police came….

The police began to claim that they were the ones who found the astrolabe. So they constantly harassed the team of divers on a daily basis claiming that the shipwreck belonged to them.

And on land, they attempted to arrest Richard every week.

The police even took Richard to court. The well-known Rincón lawyer Mingo Acevedo defended him, and the case was thrown out within a month. The police chief even apologized to Richard since the whole town knew he had discovered the shipwreck.

After that, however, the police continued to harass him in the water until Richard got a handwritten letter from the judge, a court injunction, telling the police to leave him alone. But the police were not giving up. They even set up an entirely new police station at the marina so they could constantly monitor him.

Winter came and passed, and it was hard to work on this shipwreck due to the force of the constant waves and currents.

Finally, in the summer of 1988, Richard was able to find people with a megameter to search the area and put down markers. They then brought down a four-inch Ventura pump to suck up loose material onto a sifting tray from the seafloor. Soon after, the Institute of Culture of Puerto Rico took Richard to court to stop the excavation. During this time in court, Texas A&M University went to court with Richard, where they stated that the Rincón shipwreck was the most significant find in the Caribbean. They proposed to help in the excavation, ship the items found back to Texas to clean and stabilize the artifacts to then be sent back to Puerto Rico. They also offered to give the Puerto Rico government three million dollars in funds to build a museum in Rincón where the artifacts would be displayed. Different municipalities such as Mayagüez and Aguadilla fought for the funds and museum placement in their town. In the end, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture said No to three million and No to the museum.

Luego, Richard trajo a Harry Hawk. Quien tenía un excelente equipo para bucear, filmar y quitar arena. Según Richard, estaba filmando cuando encontró el astrolabio que intentó tomar y reclamarlo como su descubrimiento. Luego intentó comprarle el astrolabio a Richard por nueve mil dólares, y Richard se negó, alegando que era patrimonio del pueblo de Puerto Rico. Harry incluso trató de llevar a Richard a los tribunales, esto se prolongó durante veinte años y al final quedó en nada. ¿Cómo y quién lo encontró realmente?

Según Richard, dividieron el área del naufragio en secciones con cuatro buzos que buscaban cuidadosamente cada sección a la que estaban asignados. Michael T tuvo la suerte de que su sección era donde estaba enterrado el astrolabio.

Luego vino la policía….

La policía comenzó a reclamar que fueron ellos quienes encontraron el astrolabio. Así que acosaban constantemente al equipo de buzos alegando que el naufragio les pertenecía. Y en tierra, intentaron arrestar a Richard cada semana. La policía incluso llevó a Richard a los tribunales. El conocido abogado de Rincón, Mingo Acevedo, lo defendió y el caso fue desestimado en un mes. El jefe de la policía incluso se disculpó con Richard, ya que todo el pueblo sabía que era él quien había descubierto el naufragio. Después de eso, sin embargo, la policía continuó acosándolo en el agua hasta que Richard obtuvo una carta escrita a mano del juez, como orden judicial, diciéndole a la policía que lo dejaran en paz. Pero la policía no se rindió. Incluso establecieron una estación de policía completamente nueva en la Marina para poder monitorearlo constantemente.

After May 1988, Richard battled different institutes that wanted to claim the astrolabe as theirs in court every two months for 19 years.

El 24 de mayo de 1988, Richard solicitó tasar el astrolabio a Christie’s en Nueva York con fines judiciales. Sin embargo, la tasación se realizó en base a fotografías, por lo que nunca se hizo una estimación precisa.

In 1988 the mayor of Rincón, Ruben Caro, had given Richard a facility in downtown Rincón where he could store and properly treat the artifacts submerged in saltwater for hundreds of years.

Unfortunately, certain special chemicals were needed, which the Puerto Rico government purposely denied him access to. However, mayor Ruben Caro helped him gain access to them through the parks department. He remembers Ruben Caro as being very helpful and supportive of his efforts. At the same time, Michael T had opened a small museum at the Rincón lighthouse where items from the shipwreck were displayed. People from the town even brought and donated other artifacts to be put on display for the public. Sadly, when Ruben Caro’s term in office was over, the new mayor closed the museum and even demolished the building, and pushed the rubble into the ocean.

The astrolabe was never displayed at the museum, still feeling pressure from the police, who were watching Richards’s house, he kept the astrolabe buried in a secret location. The judge who

Desafortunadamente, se necesitaban ciertos químicos especiales, a los que el gobierno de Puerto Rico le negó acceso a propósito. Sin embargo, el alcalde Rubén Caro lo ayudó a obtenerlos a través del Departamento de Parques. Richard recuerda que Ruben Caro fue de gran ayuda y apoyo en sus esfuerzos.

Al mismo tiempo, Michael T había abierto un pequeño museo en el faro de Rincón donde se exhibían elementos del naufragio. La gente de la ciudad incluso trajo y donó otros artefactos para exhibirlos al público. was seeing over his case actually pulled him aside and told him, “make sure you hide it well because the police will come to your home and steal it from you.”

Years later, a specific date was hard to come upon, the police and Institute of Puerto Rican Culture finally got their way.

While Richard was drinking at the Marina, twelve armed police officers with multiple vehicles pulled upon him. They gave him an ultimatum: “give us the astrolabe and artifacts or go to jail.” They took everything, the astrolabe and all the artifacts that were being kept in town.

In the end, most of the artifacts ended up getting ruined because of improper care by the government. According to Richard, they kept them in five-gallon buckets of freshwater, which is not the proper way to care for them. Later the government blamed the improper care of the artifacts on a hurricane that had passed over the island.

Richard insisted they keep the astrolabe in an Igloo because the water had to be changed daily. He would regularly visit the vault where they kept it with multiple lawyers and witnesses and drop a pill into the water to check the salinity of the water.

According to Richard, they never adequately cared for the astrolabe. He also commented that the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture had at least two marine archeologists working with the artifacts. Both quit due to corruption and falsification of documents.

Where is the astrolabe now?

El astrolabio nunca se exhibió en el museo, y con la presión de la policía, que vigilaba la casa de Richard, este mantuvo el astrolabio enterrado en un lugar secreto. El juez que estaba a cargo de su caso incluso lo llevó aparte y le dijo: “asegúrate de esconderlo bien porque la policía va a ir a tu casa y te lo robará”.

Años después, difícil encontrar una fecha específica, la policía y el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña finalmente se salieron con la suya. Mientras Richard bebía en la Marina de Rincón, doce policías armados con varios vehículos lo detuvieron y le dieron un ultimátum: “o nos das el astrolabio y los artefactos o vas a la cárcel”. Se llevaron todo, el astrolabio y todos los artefactos que se guardaban en el pueblo.

Al final, la mayoría de los artefactos terminaron arruinados debido al cuidado inadecuado por parte del gobierno. Según Richard, los mantenían en cubos de cinco galones de agua dulce, que no es la forma adecuada de cuidarlos. Posteriormente el gobierno culpó el mal cuidado de los artefactos a un huracán que había pasado sobre la isla.

Richard insistió en que mantuvieran el astrolabio en un Igloo porque había que cambiar el agua todos los días. Visitaba regularmente la bóveda donde lo guardaban con varios abogados y testigos y este arrojaba una pastilla al agua para verificar la salinidad del agua.

Según Richard, nunca cuidaron adecuadamente el astrolabio.

También comentó que el Instituto de Cultura de Puerto Rico tenía al menos dos arqueólogos marinos trabajando con los artefactos. Pero ambos renunciaron por corrupción y falsificación de documentos. ¿Dónde está el astrolabio ahora?

The Rincón astrolabe or the “Astrolabio de Rincón 1616” is now kept at a privately owned nautical museum in Old San Juan called El Museo del Mar.

ometimes we stop and realize that we do not fully appreciate the world around us due to a lack of knowledge. I mean this when I speak of the importance of Puerto Rico as a middle and strategic point towards the world, with Rafael Hernández International Airport as the protagonist.

Yes, we all know or have heard the mention of this airport. It’s basically in our back yard. But are you aware of the incredible impact it has on the world? It is worth mentioning that it has the longest runway in the Caribbean, 11,702 feet long, 200 feet wide, and with the capacity to receive all types of aircraft, even the largest in its category.

xisten ocasiones en que nos detenemos a pensar un segundo y nos damos cuenta que no apreciamos del todo lo que tenemos por falta de conocimiento. A esto me refiero cuando indagamos en la importancia de Puerto Rico como punto medio y estratégico hacia el mundo siendo el Aeropuerto Internacional Rafael Hernández como protagonista.

Sí, todos conocemos o hemos escuchado la mención de este aeropuerto. Está básicamente en nuestro patio. Pero, ¿estás consciente del gran impacto que el mismo tiene para el mundo? Cabe mencionar que cuenta con la pista de aterrizaje más larga del Caribe con 11,702 pies de largo, 200 pies de ancho y con la capacidad de recibir todo tipo de aviones, hasta el más grande en su categoría.

Rafael Hernández International Airport is the second largest international airport in Puerto Rico regarding passenger and cargo movement. It was built during World War II located in the old military base of the air force in Aguadilla. It is named Rafael Hernández in honor of an excellent and brilliant Puerto Rican composer.

Before I share all those droplets of knowledge that we know you are eager to know, I ask you, do you know all the entities that make up this airport? Let’s take a look!

The airport seems small from our perspective, but it is not.

Therefore, it is essential to know all those components that make the airport a necessary stop for the world.

El aeropuerto parece pequeño desde nuestra perspectiva, pero no lo es.

Por ende, es de suma importancia conocer todos esos componentes que hacen del aeropuerto una parada esencial para el mundo.

Certainly, there are areas of the airport that are easily identified by their recurring contact with passengers. And others are known for their services and continuous protection to our island, such as US Customs and Border Protection, Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, Rafael Hernandez Airport Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, among others.

Ciertamente hay áreas del aeropuerto que se identifican fácilmente por su contacto recurrente con pasajeros. Y hay otras que se conocen por sus servicios y protección continua a nuestra isla, tales como US Customs and Border Protection, Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, Rafael Hernandez Airport Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, entre otros.

We collected some interesting data during our visit that perhaps for many, it is a joy to find out, or maybe they already knew about it. With this mentioned, in the mornings, you can see different airlines that do not operate in Puerto Rico (Emirates, Martinair Cargo, Air France, KLM) but that visit us to refuel and change crew. The most interesting thing is that several of these large planes arrive loaded with flowers from South America, mainly from Ecuador and Colombia. Once the stop is over, they leave for Europe. Sometimes they unload flowers in Puerto Rico alike.

Durante nuestra visita se pudieron recopilar algunos datos interesantes que quizás para muchos sea una gozada enterarse o quizás ya conocían de ello.

Mencionado esto, en las mañanas se pueden apreciar distintas aerolíneas que no operan en Puerto Rico (Emirates, Martinair Cargo, Air France, KLM) pero que nos visitan para abastecerse de combustible y cambiar de tripulación.

Lo más interesante es que varios de estos grandes aviones llegan cargados de flores desde Sudamérica, principalmente de Ecuador y Colombia. Una vez finalizada la parada, salen hacia Europa. En ocasiones, descargan flores en Puerto Rico por igual.

Right next to it, we can see the FedEx area, in fact, one of the largest.

The most incredible thing is that half of the airport (BQN) flights are from FedEx. The main planes arrive in Aguadilla, and from there, they distribute to San Juan, Dominican Republic, different Caribbean islands, and some domestic flights in the United States. Of course, we are not counting the daily flights performed by UPS.

Justo al lado podemos apreciar la zona de Fedex, de hecho una de las más grandes. Lo más increíble es que la mitad de los vuelos que opera el aeropuerto (BQN) son de Fedex. Los aviones principales llegan a Aguadilla y de ahí distribuyen para San Juan, República Dominicana, distintas islas del Caribe y algunos vuelos domésticos en Estados Unidos. Sin contar los vuelos diarios que realiza UPS.

Also, did you know that they have a museum? For those who love history and the armed forces, visit the Borinquen Field Ramey Air Force Base Museum. Unfortunately, it is no longer inside the airport because that hangar is currently dedicated to storing private use planes. But, thanks to the Puerto Rico Hotel Industry (IHP), it is now located on the side of Punta Borinquen Resort, just across the street from Surf Zone.

The entrance is free.

Además, ¿sabías que tienen un museo? Para los amantes de la historia y las fuerzas armadas pueden visitar el Borinquen Field Ramey Air Force Base Museum. Ya no se encuentra dentro del aeropuerto pues ese hangar se dedica actualmente a guardar aviones de uso privado. Pero, gracias a la Industria Hotelera de Puerto Rico (IHP), ahora se encuentra en un costado de Punta Borinquen Resort, justo al cruzar la calle de Surf Zone. La entrada es gratis.

On the other hand, in Aguadilla, maintenance services are provided under Vortex Aviation to 80% of the commercial airlines that fly to Puerto Rico. And, they are not the only ones! In 18 months, Lufthansa Technik, Puerto Rico, built several thoroughly trained and key areas internationally. In this case, it designates a site that is dedicated to aviation mechanics. Thus, serving airlines that do not necessarily operate in Puerto Rico like Allegiant brings their planes to repair in Aguadilla.

Por otro lado, en Aguadilla se brindan servicios de mantenimiento bajo Vortex Aviation al 80% de las aerolíneas comerciales que vuelan a Puerto Rico. Y, ¡no son los únicos! En tan solo 18 meses Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico logró construir varias zonas totalmente capacitadas y claves a nivel internacional. En este caso designa un área que se dedica básicamente a la mecánica de aviación. Atendiendo aerolíneas que no necesariamente operan en Puerto Rico como Allegiant, pero que traen sus aviones a reparar en Aguadilla.

escate Playas Borinquen is a non-profit corporation organized under the Laws of Puerto Rico and made up of diverse community administrators deeply concerned with preserving the natural and recreational areas of Punta Borinquen (better known as the old Ramey Base.)

It all started as a community service initiative in 2013 that was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization on August 26, 2014. With a clear calling, they dedicated themselves to restoring the recreational areas of the Ramey Base and protecting its natural areas (the beaches, the ruins as cultural heritage, and their wildlife.)

Todo comenzó como una iniciativa de servicio comunitario en el año 2013 que se incorporó oficialmente como una organización sin fines de lucro el 26 de agosto de 2014. Teniendo claro su llamado, se dedicaron a restaurar las áreas recreativas de la Base Ramey y proteger su naturaleza (las playas, las ruinas como patrimonio cultural y su vida silvestre.)

Their mission to rescue and clean Punta Borinquen has been transformed as they achieve their initial goals. Focusing now on environmental awareness and protection, they are increasingly targeting the growth of outdoor recreation by developing the visitor’s economy. Its new objective is to develop this economy, impacting the West of Puerto Rico.

Su misión de rescatar y limpiar Punta Borinquen se ha transformado a medida que logran sus metas iniciales. Centrándose ahora en la concientización y protección del medio ambiente, cada vez se orientan más en protagonizar el crecimiento de la recreación al aire libre desarrollando la economía emergente de visitantes e impactando el oeste de Puerto Rico.

During the initial process, the corporation demonstrated a clear correlation between the local economy’s health and the protection of natural and recreational areas. What has turned out to be somewhat interesting for the total execution of the project.

After seeking help for years from government entities in vain and contemplating their negligence, the founder of Rescate Playas Borinquen, Mario Torres, decided to coordinate the cleaning work of the area with the help of his friends. Taking advantage of his birthday, on July 31, 2013, Torres requested to gift their time instead. And so they managed to cut the park’s entrance to Borinquen beach. The rest is history.

Oh… 2017 and Hurricane Maria! Where life stopped, but time continued to advance. The restart and reinvention of life as we knew it. Years go by, and it continues to be a historical reference.

But let me tell you, Rescate Playa Borinquen had a clear meaning of RESILIENCE long before that.

After years of the government’s absolute abandonment of Punta Borinquen, they knew that it was the community who had to rescue this area. So, without complaints or doubts, since 2013, the community rolled up its sleeves and got to work. Was there uncertainty on the horizon? Maybe, but each project served as fuel for the next one.

The local economy has grown. And, the corporation, with the help of the community, has shown that “a united community” committed to the environment turns out to be a beautiful path where everyone wins.

Durante el proceso inicial, la corporación avanzó con pie firme en demostrar la correlación entre la salud de la economía local y las áreas recreativas y naturales protegidas. Lo que ha resultado ser un tanto interesante para la ejecución total del proyecto.

Luego de buscar ayuda de entidades por años en vano tras contemplar su negligencia, el fundador de Rescate Playas Borinquen, Mario Torres, decidió coordinar el trabajo de limpieza del área por su cuenta con ayuda de sus amigos. Aprovechado su cumpleaños, el 31 de julio del 2013, Torres hizo la petición de que le regalaran su tiempo en lugar de regalos. Y así lograron recortar la entrada del parque a la playa Borinquen. El resto es historia.

Ay… ¡El 2017 y el Huracán María! Donde la vida paró pero el tiempo continuaba avanzando. El reinicio y el reinvento de la vida como la conocíamos. Pasan los años y continúa siendo un punto de referencia histórica. Pero algo les digo, Rescate Playa Borinquen tenía claro el significado de RESILIENCIA desde mucho antes.

Luego de años del absoluto abandono de Punta Borinquen por parte del gobierno, sabían que era la comunidad quien debía rescatar esta área. Sin quejas ni dudas, desde el 2013 la comunidad se enrrolló las mangas y se puso a trabajar. ¿Con incertidumbre en el horizonte? Tal vez, pero cada proyecto sirvió de combustible para el siguiente.

La economía local se ha disparado. Y, la corporación junto con la comunidad han demostrado que “una comunidad unida” y comprometida con el medio ambiente resulta ser un camino hermoso donde todos ganan.

Some of their outstanding projects are: •Abandoned facilities: recovery maintenance of brown buildings.

and

•Cleaning and maintenance of roads and paths: access to these areas must be clean and safe at all times.

•Beach cleaning, garbage, and debris removal: keeping the focus on reducing contamination of the basin and protecting the area’s ecology.

•Historic Conservation and Protection: Punta Borinquen has a long history from the preColumbian and Spanish era to its role as an Air Force base during World War II. Their goal is to raise funds to rebuild and protect the lighthouse in compliance with the Secretary’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties before it completely disappears.

•Trails and facilities: They build and maintain adequate signage for roads, trails, and other facilities for our visitors and locals.

Algunos de sus proyectos destacados son: •Instalaciones abandonadas: recuperación y mantenimiento de edificios marrones.

•Limpieza y mantenimiento de carreteras y caminos: es importante que el acceso a estas áreas sea limpio y seguro en todo momento.

•Limpieza de playas, extracción de basura y escombros: manteniendo el enfoque en reducir la contaminación de la cuenca y protegiendo la ecología de la zona.

•Conservación y protección histórica: Punta Borinquen tiene mucha historia desde la era precolombina y española hasta su papel durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial como base de la Fuerza Aérea. Su objetivo es recaudar fondos para reconstruir y proteger el faro cumpliendo con los Estándares del Secretario para el Tratamiento de Propiedades Históricas antes de que desaparezca por completo.

•Senderos e instalaciones: donde construyen y mantienen la señalización adecuada de caminos, senderos y otras instalaciones tanto para nuestros visitantes como los locales.

he latte, a classic coffee universally adored. The artful combination of espresso coffee and steamed milk that puts a smile on everyone’s face. Here in Rincón, we met with Zulmy Ortiz, owner of Friends Café Rincón, to learn how they make the perfect latte.

Essentially a latte only has two ingredients, espresso coffee and steamed milk, so let’s start with the espresso. According to Zulmy, various factors compose the perfect shot of espresso. It all starts with the coffee bean, which has to be freshly ground at the moment to ensure a full fresh flavor. The grind of the coffee also has to be a specific texture, not too fine and not too coarse. The ground coffee is then extracted with a special espresso machine imported from Italy. Finally, hot water is filtered through the ground coffee for 20 to 30 seconds, and voila, perfect hot espresso is ready. The important thing is to accomplish a balance between the acidic, bitter, and sweet tones of the coffee.

Next comes the steamed milk. The classic latte is made with whole milk. The milk is placed in a special cup, and hot steam is injected. The hot steam warms the milk, texturizes it, and gives it that yummy silky texture you would expect in the perfect latte! Zulmy emphasizes that it’s very important to heat the milk to the perfect temperature, about 150 degrees farenheight.

The temperature of the milk can alter the flavor of the latte. You also don’t want it to be cold or too hot to enjoy.

So, as we mentioned, the classic latte is simply espresso coffee and milk. However, many different versions of the latte can be made. For example, the mocha, a latte with chocolate syrup added. Yum! Friends Café has an entire assortment of different flavors that can be added to your lattes, such as vanilla, hazelnut, coconut, and more. Other kinds of milk can be used, such as almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk. And on a hot day, you can even have your latter over ice, an iced latte.

atte, un café clásico universalmente adorado. La ingeniosa combinación de café espresso y leche al vapor que hace sonreír a todos. Aquí en Rincón, nos reunimos con Zulmy Ortiz, dueña de Friends Café Rincón, para aprender cómo hacer el café con leche perfecto.

El café latte solo tiene dos ingredientes, café espresso y leche al vapor, así que comencemos con el café espresso. Según Zulmy, varios factores componen un espresso perfecto. Todo comienza con el grano de café, debe estar recién molido para garantizar un sabor completamente fresco.

El café molido o la harina de café debe tener una molienda específica, ni demasiado fina ni demasiado gruesa. Luego, se extrae con una máquina de espresso especial importada de Italia.

Finalmente, el agua caliente se filtra a través del café molido a un tiempo de 20 a 30 segundos y listo, el espresso perfecto está listo. Lo importante es lograr un balance entre el ácido, el amargo y el dulce del café.

Luego viene la leche al vapor. El café latte clásico está hecho con leche entera. La leche se coloca en una taza especial y se inyecta vapor caliente. ¡El vapor calienta la leche y le da esa textura deliciosa y sedosa que esperarías de un café latte perfecto! Zulmy enfatiza que es muy importante calentar la leche a la temperatura perfecta, unos 150 grados Fahrenheit. La temperatura de la leche puede alterar el sabor del café con leche. Tampoco quieres que esté frío o demasiado caliente como para quemarte y no poder disfrutarlo.

Entonces, como mencionamos, el café latte clásico es simplemente café espresso y leche. Sin embargo, se pueden hacer muchas versiones diferentes.
