WELCOME BIENVENIDOS We may be nearing the end of our tourist season but that does not mean things are slowing down in Rincón. On the contrary, our town is passing some incredible environmental legislature. Beginning on the 1st of August, plastic bags will no longer be available at grocery stores. People must bring their own re-usable bags, and in doing so, they will help prevent more plastic from entering the waters that surround our island.

Our community will also be uniting against a threat to our local economy. With the possibility of a Walgreens being built in our small town, many local business owners are coming together to preserve our local economy and small town charm.

On a lighter note, George Blednick, who has been a visitor of Rincón for over twenty years, describes his family’s experiences at one of the baseball games for the popular Indios of Mayaguez. He compares the excitement of a local Puerto Rican game to that of a typical New York baseball game.

Terrie Hayward from Positive Animal Wellness explains the difference between positive reinforcement training or R+ Training and the more common method of punishment-based training. After reading about Terrie, you will truly believe that old dogs can learn new tricks.

Finally, I would like to thank Irma Bartolomey and her husband, Juan Luis, for inviting me to the activity on the 24th of April at the Rincón Municipal building. Ten of the top non-profit organizations of Rincón were recognized and given a plaque.

These non-profits include ARF, The Rincón Cultural Center, The Rincón Triathlon, and more. It was a pleasant event that concluded with snacks and lots of picture taking.

Estamos llegando al final de nuestra temporada turística pero eso no significa que las cosas se estén retardando en Rincón. Todo lo contrario, nuestro pueblo está aprobando unas legislaturas medioambientales increíbles. Comenzando el 1ro de agosto las bolsas plásticas ya no estarán disponibles en los supermercados. Las personas tendrán que traer sus propias bolsas reusables y al hacerlo ellos ayudaran a prevenir que más plástico entre a las aguas que rodean nuestra isla.

A su vez, nuestra comunidad se unirá en contra de la amenaza que experimenta nuestra economía local. Con la posibilidad de que un Walgreens sea construido en nuestro pequeño pueblo, muchos de los propietarios de los negocios locales se están uniendo para hacerle frente y preservar la economía local y el encanto de pequeño pueblo.

En una nota más ligera, George Blednick, quien ha sido un visitante de Rincón por más de veinte años, describe su experiencia familiar en uno de los juegos de baseball de los Indios de Mayagüez. Él compara la emoción de un juego local puertorriqueño con aquella experimentada en los juegos de baseball en Nueva York.

Terrie Hayward de Positive Animal Wellness explica la diferencia entre el entrenamiento de refuerzo positivo o Entrenamiento R+ y el entrenamiento más común que es con el método de los castigos. Luego de leer sobre Terrie, creerán sin duda alguna que los perros viejos pueden aprender nuevos trucos.

Finalmente, quisiera darle las gracias a Irma Bartolomey y a su esposo Juan Luis por invitarme a la actividad del 24 de abril en la Alcaldía Municipal de Rincón. Diez de las más renombradas organizaciones sin fines de lucro de Rincón fueron reconocidas y rememoradas con una placa. Estas organizaciones incluyeron a ARF, El Centro Cultural de Rincón, El Triatlón Rincoeño, y otras más. Fue un evento muy placentero el cual concluyo con refrigerios y muchas fotos.

Rincón has become the first municipality in Puerto Rico to implement an ordinance that regulates the sale and distribution of single use plastic shopping bags and promotes the use of reusable bags at retail stores. The ordinance, which was passed by the Municipal Legislature and signed by the Hon. Mayor Carlos López in January, aims to reduce litter, protect the environment and marine life, eliminate a source of debris from the stormwater runoff system and align Rincón with “Basura Cero” (Zero Waste) concepts.

Effective August 1st, retail stores will no longer be offering plastic carry out bags to customers for their purchases.

Instead, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, which are more environmentally friendly. In fact, customers may bring any type of bag that they desire to the store to be used for check out. Paper bags will be available at a cost of 15 cents each.

Plastic is not biodegradeable but photo-degrades into smaller pieces that absorb toxins and can become part of our food chain and remains in the environment for centuries.

It is estimated that over 100,000 marine mammals and one million birds are negatively impacted by plastic debris.

Plastic bags are particularly dangerous to the environment because they easily float in the air and waterways.

The ordinance adds Rincón to a long list of cities in the US and entire countries such as China, Ireland and India that have successfully regulated the distribution of plastic shopping bags. The effort to eliminate the plastic bags in Rincón started in late 2011 with the formation of a volunteer group called Reduciendo la Huella Plástica (Reducing the Plastic Footprint) that is affiliated with Fundación Surfrider Rincón, Amigos de Tres Palmas and the Federación de Surfing de Puerto Rico. Working with the Department of Page 22

Rincón, se ha convertido en el primer municipio en Puerto Rico en implementar una ordenanza que regula la venta y distribución de las bolsas plásticas de un solo uso, además, de promover el uso de bolsas reusables en las tiendas al por menor. La ordenanza, la cual fue aprobada por la legislatura municipal y firmada por el Hon. Alcalde Carlos López en enero, busca reducir la basura, proteger al medio ambiente y la vida marina, eliminar una de las fuentes de residuos de los sistemas de escurrimientos de aguas pluviales y alinear a Rincón con el concepto de “Basura Cero”.

Desde el 1ro de agosto, fecha en que la ordenanza se hace efectiva, las tiendas al por menor ya no estarán ofreciéndole a los consumidores bolsas plásticas para sus compras. En cambio, los clientes serán alentados para que traigan sus propias bolsas reusables las cuales son más amigables al medio ambiente. De hecho, los consumidores podrán traer a las tiendas cualquier tipo de bolsa que ellos deseen para ser utilizadas en el momento de salida. Las bolsas de papel estarán disponibles pero a un costo de .15 centavos cada una.

El plástico no se biodegrada, en cambio, se foto-degrada en pequeños pedazos que absorben toxinas y pueden llegar a convertirse en parte de nuestra cadena alimenticia y permanecer en el medio ambiente por siglos. Se estima que sobre 100,000 mamíferos marinos y un millón de aves son impactados de manera dañina por los desechos plásticos. Las bolsas plásticas son particularmente nocivas para el medio ambiente porque flotan fácilmente en el aire o en las vías fluviales. La ordenanza añade al pueblo de Rincón, a una larga lista de ciudades en los Estados Unidos, así como a países en su totalidad, como son el caso de China, Irlanda e India, los cuales exitosamente han logrado regular la distribución de las bolsas plásticas. El esfuerzo para eliminar las bolsas plásticas en Rincón, comenzó en el 2011 con la formación de un grupo de voluntarios

Recycling and its director, Manuel Gónzalez, the group established grassroots community support for the legislation. Of great importance to the success of the project was the early cooperation of the town’s major supermarkets.

Over 600 reusable bags were sewn by volunteers from donated materials and passed out free of charge as part of the outreach efforts. Last year, the legislation process gathered strength when it was tied to the Management of the Stormwater Runoff System through the consulting group Tetra Tech and when the ADSAutoridad de Desperdicios Sólidos (Solid Waste Authority) and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) added their support and expertise.

The ordinance calls for a 12-month educational period to inform the community about the legislation and the benefits of reusable bags. Events and activities have been planned to reach students, the general public and visitors to Rincón. After August 1st, stores will be monitored for compliance; however, a six month grace period where no fines will be issued will be in effect til February 1st 2015.

Non- compliance after the grace period will carry increasing fines per violation.

“This is a big step toward protecting the marine life around Rincón. The Tourist Association of Rincón (TAR) supports the environmental efforts of the organizations involved and we look forward to more towns and eventually, the entire island being plastic bag free,” stated James Westfall, TAR representative.

Local environmental groups are thrilled with this ordinance that makes progress towards protecting the wildlife and beauty of Rincón including its beaches, Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, waterways, and hillsides.

Sobre 600 bolsas reusables fueron cocidas por voluntarios utilizando materiales reusables y estas fueron repartidas sin costo alguno, esto como parte de los esfuerzos extensivos.

El año pasado, el proceso legislativo cobro fuerzas cuando este se vio atado al Sistema de Gestión de Aguas Pluviales a través del grupo consultor Tetra Tech y cuando la Autoridad de Desperdicios Sólidos (ADS) y la Agencia de Protección del Medio Ambiente (EPA, por sus siglas en inglés) se unieron con su apoyo y experiencia.

La ordenanza, establece un periodo educacional de 12 meses, dentro del cual se le informara a la comunidad sobre la legislación y sobre los beneficios de la utilización de bolsas reusables. Diversos eventos y actividades han sido organizados para lograr llevar el mensaje a estudiantes, el público en general y a los visitantes de Rincón. Luego del 1ro de agosto, las tiendas serán monitoreadas para asegurar el cumplimiento de la ordenanza, no obstante, un periodo de gracia de seis meses dentro del cual no se emitirán multas estará vigente hasta el 1ro de febrero de 2015. Si la ordenanza no se cumple cabalmente luego del periodo de gracia, esto resultara en el aumento de las multas por violación.

“Este es un gran paso a favor de la protección de la vida marina en Rincón. La Asociación de Turismo de Rincón (TAR, por sus siglas en inglés) apoya el esfuerzo de protección medio ambiental que han realizado las organizaciones involucradas y estamos ansiosos de que más pueblos y eventualmente, la isla en su totalidad sea una libre de bolsas plásticas”, estableció James Westfall, representante de TAR. Los grupos medio ambientales locales están muy felices con la aprobación de esta ordenanza, la cual establece un progreso hacia la protección de la vida silvestre y de la belleza de Rincón, incluyendo sus playas, la Reserva Marina de Tres Palmas, sus vías fluviales y sus montañas.

IMPORTANCE OF RINCÓN’S SMALL BUSINESSES LA IMPORTANCIA DE LOS PEQUEÑOS NEGOCIOS EN RINCÓN Written by Andrea Greve & translated by Cristina Nieves

Every year we see more and more chain stores or “big-box companies” displace locally-owned businesses throughout the island and across the world. With every day that passes, people become accustomed to going to Walgreens, Sam’s Club, and Home Depot for their everyday needs. The damage this kind of shopping is doing to our local establishments is not only economic but cultural. With the threat of a Walgreens being built in our town of Rincón, it’s time to consider the real cost to our community that could potentially lose its local business base.

It’s no secret that people from all over the globe come to Rincón to escape to a unique community and to enjoy our quaint, small-town charm. Many visitors already have a Walgreens or CVS on every corner, and for them, part of Rincón’s enchantment is our locally owned restaurants, gift shops, grocery stores, hardware stores, and four pharmacies.

All these businesses could potentially be put out of business by the incursion of big-box stores to the town. While local businesses prices are good, they cannot compete with the aggressive price-cutting available to multinational companies.

An example of a myth that many people seem to believe is that a Walgreens in Rincón will bring more jobs and money to the town. In truth, almost every dollar spent in one of their establishments is shipped off to corporate headquarters in the USA. Compared

Cada año vemos como más y más tiendas en cadena o grandes empresas desplazan a los negocios locales a través de la Isla y alrededor de todo el planeta.

Con cada día que pasa las personas se van acostumbrando a ir a tiendas en cadena como Walgreens, Sam’s Club y Home Depot para satisfacer sus necesidades del diario vivir. No obstante, el daño que este tipo de consumo está ocasionando a los establecimientos comerciales locales no es solamente económico, también es cultural. Ante la amenaza de que un Walgreens pudiera ser construido en nuestro pueblo de Rincón, es tiempo de considerar el verdadero costo que esto pudiera tener en nuestra comunidad, la cual pudiera potencialmente perder sus bases comerciales locales.

No es un secreto que las personas a través del globo terráqueo vienen a Rincón, para escaparse y refugiarse en una comunidad única y disfrutar de los encantos de nuestro pequeño y pintoresco pueblo.

Muchos de nuestros visitantes ya tienen en sus ciudades natales un Walgreens o un CVS en cada esquina y para ellos parte de los encantos de Rincón son los negocios locales como restaurantes, tiendas de regalos, supermercados, ferreterías, y cuatro farmacias. Todos estos negocios pudieran potencialmente ser desplazados y verse obligados a cerrar esto ante la incursión de grandes empresas a nuestro pueblo. A pesar de que los precios de los negocios locales son buenos, estos no pueden competir con los agresivos bajos precios que ofrecen las compañías multinacionales.

Un ejemplo relacionado a un mito que muchos parecen creer es aquel que alega que un Walgreens en Rincón traería más trabajos y más dinero a la economía local. Ciertamente, se podría estimar que casi cada dólar que se consume en uno de sus establecimientos es enviado a las oficinas centrales de la corporación en los Estados Unidos. Comparado a las tiendas en cadena, los

If you spend $50.00 at a Walgreens, that money will be sent to corporate headquarters. If you spend $50.00 at a local business, that money is likely to be spent at other local Rincón businesses.

As for jobs, the few created

by Walgreens will never outweigh the loss of jobs due to closed businesses or businesses that have to cut employees hours because of a drop in sales. Locally owned businesses also create opportunities for local accountants, insurance brokers, attorneys and advertising agencies. The big-box companies have their accountants, lawyers and advertising agencies based off the island.

Locally owned businesses also carry more local products. Chain stores have a set list of products, 90% of which are foreignmade. Chain stores are all clones, including their products. And as for their pharmacies, they don’t even accept the local ‘reforma’ health plan, a plan that over 60% of the Rincón population uses. In order to obtain prescription medications, you must either have a private insurance plan or succumb to their prices-

Los negocios locales también crean oportunidades para contables locales, agentes de seguros, abogados y agencias de publicidad localizadas en la isla.

Además, los negocios locales trabajan con más productos locales. Las tiendas en cadena tienen establecidas unas listas de productos, de los cuales un 90% son hechos en el extranjero.

Estas tiendas en cadena son todas unos clones, incluyendo sus productos. En relación a sus farmacias, las mismas ni siquiera aceptan el plan médico local, la Reforma, mientras que el 60% de la poblacion en Rincón coje Reforma. Para poder obtener medicamentos recetados debes tener un plan privado o sucumbir ante sus precios los cuales tienden a ser significativamente más altos que los de las farmacias locales.

En 1848, casi 160 años atrás, un filósofo con el nombre de Marx advirtió famosísimamente que los pequeños negocios inevitablemente serian eliminados por las grandes compañías multinacionales. Yo considero a

which are often significantly higher than the local pharmacies.

In 1848, over 160 years ago, a philosopher by the name of Marx famously warned that small businesses would inevitably be wiped out by large multinational companies. I find it alarming to see his prediction coming true in the 21st century with the loss of local businesses, the loss of local culture and the rise of an anonymous corporate culture. But the power to stop this trend is in our hands. For the sake of our economy and our culture, we must embrace the idea of distinctive businesses with local character and not forget that their survival depends on our patronage!

According to miprv.com “the expansion of these chain stores has continued despite the government program OAM or “the office of monopolistic issues,” a program attached to the Department of Justice that, up to the moment, has not been able to control the growth of Walgreens since their arrival in 1962. OAM has also stood by and watched the expansion of Walmart when it penetrated the market in 1992 and witnessed the purchase of all “Amigo” grocery stores by the multinational corporation in 2004.

To conclude, if you absolutely must go to a Walgreens, guess what? There is one ten minutes away in the town of Añasco, one in Aguadilla with another a few miles from the first one, and three in the town of Mayagüez. La OAM igualmente ha visto la expansión de Walmart desde que penetró el mercado local en el 1992 y fue testigo también de la compra de los Supermercados Amigo por parte de la multinacional en el 2004”.

Para concluir, si es una necesidad imperante el ir a Walgreens, ¿adivina? Hay uno a diez minutos en el pueblo de Añasco, uno en Aguadilla y otro en procesos de construcción a menos de una milla del primero, y tres en el pueblo de Mayagüez. Esto no incluye a los sobre 119 Walgreens que hay alrededor de la isla. Hay más Walgreens que municipios. Así que cuando vayas a ir de compras, por favor considera primero a los negocios locales.

My family and I have been visiting Rincón for the past twenty years. We enjoy the weather, the beaches, the roadside pollo carbon, the pollo and cerdo pinchos, the local people including the selfappointed Indian traffic cop, and the laid back vibe of the town. Although the main attraction is surfing, snorkeling, scuba, and other water sports, we have discovered that baseball in Mayaguez had appeal for us as baseball fans. Our arrival in Rincon in 2014 was timely, as we were able to get to the Edward’s customer party, complete with wonderful Puerto Rican music, free cervesa and cerdo asado. Also, the following afternoon, we were very fortunate to be able to attend the pivotal game of the Puerto Rican winter league baseball playoffs in Mayaguez between the Caguas Criollas and the Magaguez Indios.

As serious baseball fans from New York, we approached winter league baseball in Mayagüez with mixed feelings of caution and curiosity. What was this all about? The official name of the Puerto Rico

Mi familia y yo hemos estado visitando el pueblo de Rincón por los últimos veinte años. Nosotros disfrutamos del clima, de las playas, del pollo al carbón a la orilla de la carretera, de los pinchos de pollo y de cerdo, de las personas locales incluyendo al auto designado policía de tránsito, el indio Bienvenido y las vibras relajadas del pueblo. No obstante, a pesar de que las principales atracciones son surfing, snorkeling, buceo y otros deportes acuáticos, nosotros hemos descubierto que el deporte de la pelota en Mayagüez, tenía gran atractivo para nosotros como fanáticos del béisbol.

Nuestra llegada a Rincón en el 2014 fue oportuna, ya que pudimos asistir a la fiesta del Supermercado Edward’s para sus clientes, la cual tenía hermosa música puertorriqueña, cerveza gratis y cerdo asado. Además, la siguiente tarde tuvimos mucha suerte al poder asistir al juego pivota de las eliminatorias de béisbol de la Liga de Invierno de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez, este entre los Criollos de Caguas y los Indios de Mayagüez.

Como fanáticos serios del béisbol en Nueva York, nosotros nos acercamos a la liga de invierno de pelota en

winter league is now, Liga de Beisball Profesional Roberto Clemente, the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League, named after the Major League Hall of Fame player from Puerto Rico, Roberto Clemente. During our many visits to the stadium in Mayagüez, the games were very laid back and only a couple of hundred people attended, although we were happy to see major league players such as Ivan Rodriguez and Carlos Delgado. Several years ago, we went to a night game that was postponed because the grounds keeper neglected to put the tarp cover on the infield during a late afternoon shower! Other fans were walking out as we were walking in! But in 2014, the game, the stadium, the fans, everything was very different!

When we drove up to the stadium, Estadio Isidoro Cholo Garcia, it was almost filled with fans about a half hour before the game. Nearly 10,000 fans attended the game. A buzz was in the air! The noise was deafening. The Public Address system was extremely loud, and the fans were using thunder sticks, and self-pumping air horns to celebrate good plays by the Indios and to distract the Criollas. This game was the sixth in a seven game series. Mayagüez was leading three games to two and had a chance to close out the series and win their nineteenth championship. Los Indios were managed by a former major leaguer, Carlos Baerga, who played with the New York Mets and Cleveland Indians. Every pitch and every bat were contested. Players from both teams were standing at the edge of the dugouts urging on their teammates. The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning when the first baseman for Los Indios, Kennys Vargas, blasted a grand slam over the right field wall. When Vargis’s blast landed, the fans erupted and anything they were holding went flying into the air: popcorn, beer, air-horns, etc., a moment of unchecked elation! The Mayaguez fans, and we Rincoeños, went wild with joy as Vargas rounded the bases and we all could sense a victory for Los Indios, now in the lead 5-1. And sure enough, Caguas went down meekly in the 9th inning and Los Indios de Mayaguez had sealed the 19th championship of their storied history. What came next was even more fascinating.

Unlike major league baseball in the states, the fans were allowed to jump down to field after the victory and participate in a spontaneous celebration with Los Indios de Mayagüez. The players and the fans, including my son and nephews, were celebrating on the field. Fans and players were

Durante muchas de nuestras visitas al estadio en Mayagüez, nos dimos cuenta que los juegos eran muy relajados y solo unos cuantos cientos de personas asistían, no obstante, nosotros estábamos felices de ver a jugadores de las grandes ligas como Iván Rodríguez y Carlos Delgado.

Varios años atrás fuimos a un juego nocturno el cual tuvo que ser suspendido porque el cuidador del campo descuidadamente no coloco la cubierta de lona sobre el campo de juego durante un aguacero en la tarde. ¡Otros fanáticos salían del campo mientras nosotros entrabamos! ¡Pero en el 2014, el juego, el estadio, los fanáticos, todo era diferente!

Cuando manejamos hacia el estadio, Estadio Isidoro Cholo García, el mismo estaba casi lleno a capacidad de fanáticos media hora antes del juego. Cerca de 10,000 fanáticos asistieron al juego. ¡Un zumbido estaba en el aire! El sonido era ensordecedor a medida que el sistema de megafonía estaba extremadamente alto y los fanáticos utilizaban truenos de palos y cornetas para celebrar las buenas jugadas de los Indios y a su vez distraer a los Criollos. Este era el sexto juego de una serie de siete, y Mayagüez estaba en la delantera tres a dos, y tenían la oportunidad de cerrar la serie y ganar su campeonato número diecinueve. Los Indios eran manejados por un ex miembro de las grandes ligas, Carlos Baerga, quien jugo con los Mets de Nueva York y con los Indios de Cleveland. Cada lanzamiento y cada batazo fueron impugnados y los jugadores de ambos equipos estuvieron parados al borde de los banquillos instando a sus compañeros. El juego estaba empatado 1-1 al final de la octava entrada, cuando el primer bateador para los Indios, Kenny Vargas, bateo un “gran slam” sobre la pared del campo derecho.

Cuando el explosivo bateo de Vargas cayó, los fanáticos entraron en erupción y cualquier cosa que estuvieran sosteniendo salió disparada hacia el aire, las palomitas de maíz, la cerveza, las cornetas, etc., ¡un momento de euforia desenfrenada! Los fanáticos mayagüezanos y nosotros los rincoeños nos volvimos locos de alegría cuando Vargas redondeo las bases y todos podíamos sentir la victoria de los Indios, ahora en la delantera 5-1. Certeramente, Caguas perdió en la novena entrada y los Indios de Mayagüez se habían asegurado su campeonato número diecinueve. No obstante, lo que vino después fue aún más fascinante.

A diferencia del béisbol de grandes ligas de los Estados Unidos, a los fanáticos se les permitió saltar al campo de juego luego de la victoria y participar de una espontánea celebración con los Indios de Mayagüez.

Los jugadores y los fanáticos, incluyendo a mi hijo y a Page 35

hugging, players were spraying champagne on one another and a spirit of innocent, communal happiness overtook everyone. The fans embraced the players, the players embraced the fans, no police on horses, no heavy handed security, just spontaneous joy shared by both players and fans in the love fest of victory. This was quite different from the circumstances in major league baseball in the 1970’s when fans rushed the field after victories at both Shea and Yankee Stadiums to grab player’s hats, gloves, grass or anything they could get their hands on. By contrast, these fans and players literally embraced one another and symbolized one of the most significant virtues of Puerto Rico, the virtue of family. The spirit between players and fans was genuine as they shared this transcendent moment together. Vamos Los Indios y vamos la cuidad de Mayagüez!

mis sobrinos, estaban celebrando en el campo. Fanáticos y jugadores, se abrazaban, los jugadores se tiraban champaña y un espíritu de inocencia y alegría comunal alcanzó a todos. Los fanáticos abrazaban a los jugadores, los jugadores abrazaban a los fanáticos, no había policías a caballo, no había seguridad de mano dura, solamente reinaba la alegría espontanea compartida entre jugadores y fanáticos guiados por el amor de celebrar la victoria. Esto fue muy distinto a las circunstancias del béisbol de grandes ligas de los 1970’s cuando los fanáticos se apresuraban hacia el campo luego de alguna victoria tanto en los estadios Shea y Yankee para agarrar las gorras y guantes de los jugadores, así como el césped o cualquier cosa que pudieran tomar.

Por el contrario, estos fanáticos y jugadores literalmente se avivaron mutuamente y simbolizó una de las virtudes más significativas de Puerto Rico, la virtud de la familia. El espíritu que imperó entre los jugadores y los fanáticos fue genuino a medida en que compartían ese trascendental momento juntos. ¡Vamos Indios y vamos Mayagüez!

Terrie Hayward of Positive Animal Wellness (P.A.W.) says, “Dogs are never too old, set in their ways, or unintelligent to learn new things.” I wasn’t hesitant, therefore, about asking her to come to work with my twelve-year-old Shih-Tzu, Lady. I also read about Terrie on Facebook and knew that she was volunteering to help rescued animals that needed to be socialized before they could be adopted. She is currently working with a deaf dog, using R+ and teaching with sign language. I never thought about the fact that animals, like all living creatures, benefit from training – especially training done with love.

Terrie and her husband Mark moved to Rincón from the island of Culebra in September 2013.

They were not new to exotic environments, having served as Peace Corp volunteers and lived in Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the British Virgin Islands before moving to Puerto Rico. While running an inn on Culebra, Terrie became certified in Positive Reinforcement Training, or R+ Training. This Page 42

Por ende, yo no vacilé cuando le pregunte a Terrie si podía trabajar con mi Shih-Tzu de doce años, Lady. Ya había leído sobre Terrie en Facebook y sabía que era voluntaria en el rescate de animales que necesitan aprender a socializar antes de poder ser adoptados. Actualmente, está trabajando con un perro sordo, utilizando R+ y enseñándolo con lenguaje de señas. Jamás me había imaginado que los animales, como cualquier otro ser vivo, puede beneficiarse del entrenamiento, especialmente de aquel impartido con amor.

Terrie y su esposo Mark se mudaron a Rincón de la isla de Culebra, en septiembre de 2013. Para ellos el clima exótico no era una novedad, ya que mientras fueron voluntarios en los Cuerpos de Paz vivieron en Papua Nueva Guinea, Samoa y las Islas Vírgenes Británicas esto antes de mudarse a Puerto Rico. Mientras manejaban una hospedería en Culebra, Terrie se certificó como Entrenadora de Refuerzos Positivos o Entrenamiento R+. Este método aplica a cualquiera que ame y entienda a los animales.

Cuando discutimos sobre la capacitación del entrenamiento R+ vs. el entrenamiento básico de los castigos, Terrie dice, “Términos como

When we discussed R+ training vs. the media- popular punishment-based training, Terrie said, “Terms like “alpha,” “dominance,” “submission,” “correction,” and “pack leader” should immediately send up red flags. The difference is an outdated, ineffective and less humane punishment- based training where the problems aren’t actually solved because the underlying issues remain.”

Examples of punishment based training techniques include choke chains, prong collars, shock collars, hitting, kicking, or any coercive or correction based methods.

When called to consult, Terrie meets with the animal and its owner in the home environment. The first session is a combination of observation and conversation. It is somewhat like a session with a therapist. I had a great time talking about the unique characteristics of my little dog, her personality, and some of the things that I felt were problems that might relate to her age (or mine)!

Terrie made suggestions and then we practiced some positive reinforcement techniques involving Lady’s favorite foods. “It has to be a #10 (reinforcer) for Lady,” said Terrie when I tried using some dry kibble as a treat (Lady’s #10 turned out to be some rather messy chicken liver stuff). I was left with some homework and that night received a follow- up summary, evaluation, and suggestions by email.

By our third session, both Lady and I became pretty well “trained.” It had been painless and actually a lot of fun.

Lady is definitely more social and interested in playing.

She also listened and pays attention when her name is called. R+ Training is such a simple and effective tool for socialization. As Terrie says, “Wouldn’t it be nice to reward for great behavior rather than waiting around to catch your animal doing something wrong and punishing for it?“ If you are interested in learning more about this technique, Terrie’s website www.positiveanimalwellness. com is a great place to begin. Terrie me hizo algunas sugerencias y luego practicamos algunas técnicas de refuerzo positivo las cuales involucraban las comidas favoritas de Lady. “Tiene que ser un #10 (refuerzo) para Lady”, me dijo Terrie cuando trate de usar un bocadillo seco como agasajo (El #10 de Lady resulto ser el desconcertante hígado de pollo). Yo me quede en casa con tarea y esa noche recibí un correo electrónico con un resumen, una evaluación y varias sugerencias.

Para nuestra tercera sesión, tanto Lady como yo estábamos bastante “entrenadas”. Había sido sin dolor y realmente divertido. Lady estaba muchísimo más sociable e interesada en jugar. Ella además escuchaba Tomás Kosmol y prestaba atención cuando su nombre era llamado.

El Entrenamiento R+ es una herramienta simple y efectiva para la socialización. Tal como lo dice Terrie, “¿No sería genial si recompensas por un excelente comportamiento a tu mascota en vez de esperar a encontrarla haciendo algo malo para castigarla?”

10 NON-PROFITS IN RINCÓN

On April 24, 2014 at the Rincón Municipal building, ten non-profit organizations of Rincón were recognized and awarded a plaque.

These organizations included: the Cultural Center of Rincón, Yunta de Bueyes, Tríalo Rincoeño, Altrusa Internacional, Pico Atalaya, Semblanza del Grupo de Mujer a Mujer (a local woman’s group), Alliance of Rincón Leaders, the Association of Puerto Rican Mothers, the Rincón Lions Club, and the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF).

These groups all strive to provide special services to the Rincón community with the goal of creating a more united society with a better standard of living. Many have regular activities for the community such as the group Pico Atalaya. Since 2004, Ramón Vega, has been successfully organizing a festival dedicated to traditional Puerto Rican games. This festival is an all-day activity that lasts for two days. Here you can take workshops on how to grow your own garden, how to make baskets, and enjoy typical music and theater. This year their festival will take place on June 28th and 29th. It will be located at the only covered basketball court in the Atalaya neighborhood.

El 24 de abril de 2014, en la Alcaldía Municipal de Rincón, diez organizaciones sin fines de lucro de Rincón fueron reconocidas y rememoradas con una placa. Estas organizaciones incluyeron a: El Centro Cultural de Rincón, Yunta de Bueyes, Tríalo Rincoeño, Altrusa Internacional, Pico Atalaya, Semblanza del Grupo de Mujer a Mujer (un grupo local femenino), Alliance of Rincón Leaders (Alianza de Lideres de Rincón), The Association of Puerto Rican Mothers (La Asociación de Madres Puertorriqueñas), El Club de Leones de Rincón, y La Fundación para el Rescate de Animales o ARF por sus siglas en inglés.

Todos estos grupos se esfuerzan para proveerle servicios especiales a la comunidad rincoeña con la meta de poder crear a través de sus esfuerzos una sociedad más unida con una mejor calidad de vida. Muchas de ellas ofrecen actividades regulares para el disfrute de la comunidad como sería el caso del grupo Pico Atalaya. The Tríalo Rincoeño, or Rincón Triathalon, is another important non-profit organization. They were established in 1982 and are dedicated to promoting, and organizing the practice of different physical exercises in Rincón. Their goal is to foment an active and healthy lifestyle, so we can have a community with a better quality of life. Their activities promote our town and create social, economic and touristic development.

They have participants from all over the world who travel to our town to participate.

Este año el festival se llevara a cabo el 28 y 29 de junio. Este será en la única cancha bajo techo del barrio Atalaya.

El Tríalo Rincoeño, es otra organización sin fines de lucro muy importante. Esta fue establecida en el 1982 y está dedicada a promover y organizar la práctica de diversos ejercicios físicos en Rincón. Su meta primordial es promover un estilo de vida saludable y activo para que así Rincón pueda tener una comunidad con una mejor calidad de vida.

Sus actividades promueven a nuestro pueblo y crean un desarrollo social, económico y turístico. Ellos tienen participantes de todas partes del mundo los cuales viajan hasta nuestro pueblo solo para participar del Tríalo.
