Jessie Wolfrom wants her art to make you feel at home. Originally from Pine Barrens, New Jersey, her work has always maintained a focus on the comfort of familiarity and the warmth of nostalgia. She is obsessed with vintage design aesthetics, fabulous wallpaper, and an overall sense of coziness. Jessie relocated permanently three years ago from the East Coast to Aguada, after a decade of seasonal residence. Though she still travels to the United States for projects. She has since spent most of her time adorning the walls of homes and businesses in Puerto Rico with murals, hand-lettering, custom signage, and everything in between. Her primary focus has been on large-scale mural work in private residences. It can still be seen locally in familiar businesses like La Estacion, The English Rose, Shaka Tacos, and The Bikini Bus. In addition to mural work, she was a long time Artwalk artisan and has now taken on a new venture with a storefront in the Rincón Plaza called Bunkerfish. The place serves her as a working studio, a gallery, and a boutique full of original art, vintage finds, hand-printed tee’s, greeting cards, stickers, and other delights, all designed by Wolfrom. Bunkerfish will be opening in February 2021 and will also offer painting workshops and private art lessons. Jessie has an insatiable curiosity to learn and an equally intense desire to continually create. She’s looking forward to the future and would love to work with you on or off the island. Jessie Wolfrom quiere hacerte sentir como en casa con su arte. Originaria de Pine Barren en Nueva Jersey, su trabajo siempre se ha centrado en la comodidad familiar y la calidez de la nostalgia. Amante de la estética vintage, wallpapers y la cálida sensación de comodidad. Jessie se mudó permanentemente de la costa este a Aguada hace tres años, después de una década de residencias estacionales. Aun así, viaja a Estados Unidos para atender proyectos. A month and a half had passed since his last surf. It would be accurate to say… he was losing it. Between the energy building up and the continuous yet comfortable thought of surfing, it became crystal clear to his understanding: surfing is a basic need. As time passed, sadness overcame his feelings, only to retreat, bringing back the kind of excitement that one can have the day before a vacation trip, Christmas Eve, or the arrival of excellent 6-to-8-foot waves with offshore winds at the local surf spot.

Había pasado un mes y medio desde su último surf. Se podría decir que estaba perdiendo la cabeza. Entre la energía acumulada y el pensamiento recurrente, quedó claro para su entendimiento que: el surf es una necesidad básica. Con el paso del tiempo, la tristeza alcanzaba sus altas y bajas trayendo emociones que sólo se pueden sentir el día antes de un viaje, en Nochebuena o a la llegada de excelentes olas de 6 a 8 pies con vientos marinos en el lugar de surf local.

He laid in bed with his eyes firmly closed, determined to sleep.

But he couldn’t, so his hyperactive imagination started to run: he managed to do a cutback wraparound and then a snap finish; it was amazing. Only four hours now for his alarm to go off. And he kept thinking, “tomorrow will be epic; I have to get there before the crowd arrives.” On and on, thoughts raced until, at last, he began to fall asleep, repeating, “It’s going to be epic tomorrow… offshore winds and low tide at 6:00 AM…”

Falling further into unconsciousness, off he went.

Three and a half hours later, he awakes from his semi conscious state. Unsteady yet alert, he stood up determined, drank his coffee, and drove off anxiously to the beach. On his way there, he caught his first glimpse of the ocean, and he was fueled with energy and exhilaration.

Before I proceed, I must say this to non-surfers: Many surfers see surfing as an essential need, and waves are scarce. The preconceived notion that surfers are mellow laid back nature lovers is not always true (unless it’s the portrayal of a surfer on endorphins, but more on that topic later). The point I want to make with the risk of being misunderstood is that surfers can show their dark centered selves with selfishness, greed, and jealousy very quickly, particularly during the surfing session. The way I see it: the more intense the surf break is, the lower the surfers that ride it are. So, back to the story.

As he arrived, he could hear the beating of the ocean; a melody that matched the pounding of his heart, forceful yet peaceful.

And after grabbing his board and hiding his car keys, he went down the path towards the shore and VOILÀ, 4-to-7 feet perfect

waves. Eagerness reached an uncontrollable level. He jumped with his board into the water and paddled towards the peak, and immediately caught his first wave of the day. It felt good, but he knew he could do better. That was just warming up.

His second wave was The Wave. He paddled, popped up, and as he made the drop, the section opened. He bottom-turned and made a cutback towards the whitewash. Suddenly, another section formed, and he saw the lip approaching him. Now he was into another level of focus where time slows down. There were no thoughts about the past nor future; there was only NOW. The timing was perfect; he hit the lip and SNAP! It was just like he dreamed the night before, and he couldn’t contain his smile as he paddled back to the peak.

Three hours had passed when he finished his session. He was stoked, proud of himself, and most important of all, satisfied. By the time hunger struck, the surfers had gathered at the local joint eating and drinking cheerfully and spirited. They were united by their kinship and shared lifestyle.

So many mindsets and feelings in this experience make you wonder: Why does physical exercise make you feel the way it does?

Why do surfers feel the way they do?

Anger, joy, determination, focus, greed, excitement, fight or flight response, hostility, state of flow, and inner peace are just a few examples of what a surfer feels throughout the surfing experience.

Let’s dive together into why this happens.

The feelings during the surf experience are caused by hormones and neurotransmitters such as adrenaline, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins; released in the body. Since the amount of these hormones and neurotransmitters released is directly correlated to the intensity and time invested in the activity, these feelings are more pronounced in surfing than, let’s say, a 30-minute jog. Bearing this in mind, let’s get down to specifics.

Habían pasado tres horas cuando terminó su sesión. Estaba emocionado, orgulloso y, lo más importante, satisfecho. Para cuando el hambre golpeó, los surfistas se habían reunido en el negocio local comiendo y bebiendo llenos de alegría. Estaban unidos por su el mismo estilo de vida.

La ira, la alegría, la determinación, la concentración, la codicia, la emoción, la respuesta de lucha o huida, la hostilidad, el estado de fluidez y la paz interior son solo algunos ejemplos de lo que siente un surfista durante la experiencia del surf. Analicemos juntos por qué sucede esto.

Las sensaciones durante la experiencia del surf son causadas por hormonas y neurotransmisores como adrenalina, norepinefrina, dopamina, serotonina y endorfinas; liberadas en el cuerpo. Dado que la cantidad de estas hormonas y neurotransmisores liberados está directamente relacionada con la intensidad y el tiempo invertido en la actividad, estas sensaciones son más pronunciadas en el surf que, digamos, “joguear” por 30 minutos. Adrenaline & Norepinephrine As stress becomes present due to a threat or a challenging situation, the fight or flight response is triggered. Adrenaline and norepinephrine, both hormones and neurotransmitters, are shunted into the bloodstream, increasing heart and respiratory rate, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure improving strength and physical performance. Survival mode is triggered so that all your systems get ready to protect life.

Surfing demands a balanced system of aerobic and anaerobic exercise. When you’re paddling, oxygen is vital (aerobic); and when you’re taking off and riding the wave, you’re ordering and consuming energy and muscle power (anaerobic). While the initial adrenaline rush may give the surfer an advantage in the water, its effect wears off once onshore.

La adrenalina y la noradrenalina, tanto hormonas como neurotransmisores, se desvían al torrente sanguíneo, lo que aumenta la frecuencia cardíaca y respiratoria, los niveles de azúcar en la sangre y la presión arterial, lo que mejora la fuerza y el rendimiento físico. Dopamine Dopamine is the precursor to norepinephrine and epinephrine.

Even more potent than endorphins, this neurotransmitter and hormone control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers.

Dopamine levels also influence mood, sleep, learning, movement, alertness, and blood flow.

Dopamine is what locks you to the scent, and it is manifested in relation to the pursuit of goals. The more valuable the goal, the higher the quality of the motivational state associated with its pursuit. It motivates you to act toward your goals and gives you a surge of reinforcing pleasure when achieving them.

Serotonin Like dopamine, serotonin can also influence people’s moods and emotions, but it also helps regulate digestive functions such as appetite, metabolism, and gut motility. Low serotonin levels are associated with anxiety and depression, and higher levels of this mood enhancer reduce stress and increase your overall confidence. It also tracks your position in the dominance hierarchies and regulates your status through emotion. The higher you are, the more serotonin your brain produces and vice versa.

Physical exercise and exposure to sunlight positively impact serotonin levels in your brain. While surfing, serotonin levels are raised, boosting the surfer’s mood and overall sense of well-being and improving its appetite and sleep.

Sensations: a calming sense of accomplishment, self-worth feel, significant, meaningful, improves the surfer’s appetite and sleep.

Felt during: surf activity & Post, released in about 30-45 minutes of exercise.

Serotonina Al igual que la dopamina, la serotonina también puede influir en el estado de ánimo y las emociones de las personas, pero también ayuda a regular las funciones digestivas como el apetito, el metabolismo y la motilidad intestinal. Endorphins As discovered in 1975, endorphins are considered “opioids” as they act similarly to opium or morphine. Like morphine, endorphins have anxiolytic effects and send negative emotions and sensations to sleep. They also help reduce pain thanks to their analgesic effects. Pain inhibition in the muscles and tendons allow surfers to maintain their performance. Finally, endorphins limit shortness of breath and exhaustion by moderating cardiac and respiratory functions.

For those of you who want to feel an immediate kick, laughter is one of the easiest ways to induce endorphin release. Just ask Benji Weatherly, who was manically laughing while paddling into a 20 feet pipeline to induce his production of endorphins to get his heart rate down. Those around who saw him, including Kalani Rob, thought he went insane (Momentum Generation Documentary, @ 26 minutes in).

Sensations: state of euphoria, analgesic effects, anxiolytic effects, ecstasy, state of well-being, cheerful, peaceful, mellow.

Felt during: released until after an hour of intense exercise; analgesic effects last up to 4 hours after surfing; anxiolytic effects last up to 6 hours after surfing.

Now that we have a clearer understanding of why surfers feel the way they do, it’s up to each of us to keep on searching for other mysteries behind the sport. Keep surfing, everyone!
