Editor’s Note / Nota de la Editora One of the favorite aspects of my working on El Coqui is the diverse amount of people I get to meet!

Every month I am able to come into contact with artists, business owners, tourists, Rincón residents and more. I love getting to know them and peer into their lives, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes.

Una de mis cosas favoritas de trabajar en El Coquí es la variedad de personas con quiénes que tengo la oportunidad de encontrarme. Cada mes conozco artistas, comerciantes, turistas, residentes de Rincón y más. Me encanta conocerles mejor, saber de sus vidas, aunque sea por solo unos minutos.

I was extra excited this month about traveling to the town of Hormigueros to photograph Vancy’s collection of paintings. He had previously come to my office with a few samples. As soon as I saw what a passionate and talented artist he was, I couldn’t wait to see more.

When I arrived, I was immediately greeted with a big smile from his mother, Aida Luz. Vancy then commenced to bring out his tremendous collection of paintings, most of which were over seven feet tall. His paintings transported me into a magical underwater world full of colorful and vibrant marine life! Another astonishing part of this visit was Vancy’s knowledge of the fish, coral, whales, dolphins, and marine ecosystem. I had a lot of questions and it was truly fascinating to be able to pick his brain for fun little facts.

Este mes he estado sumamente entusiasmada de visitar Hormigueros para fotografiar la colección de pinturas de Vancy. Previamente él había estado en nuestras oficinas para mostrarnos algunas de ellas. En cuanto noté su pasión y talento, no podía esperar para ver más de su trabajo.

En cuanto llegué, Aida Luz, su mamá, me recibió con una gran sonrisa. Vancy comenzó a mostrarme su inmensa colección de pinturas, la mayoría de más de siete pies de altura. Las mismas me transportaron a un mágico mundo submarino colorido, brillante y lleno de vida. Otro aspecto sorprendente de esta visita, fue el conocimiento de Vancy de los peces, los corales, las ballenas, los delfines y el ecosistema submarino. Yo tenía muchas preguntas y fue fascinante poder preguntarle sobre algunas curiosidades.

hen you are truly passionate about something it shows, in your personality, your mannerisms, your way of being, and in this case, your art. When I interviewed Vancy, I could truly feel his passion for Rincón, and the art he creates based on its natural beauty. Iván Caraballo Pagán, better known as Vancy has been capturing stunning sunsets, coral landscapes, turtles, whales and more, for a multitude of years via his paintings.

Cuando entrevisté a Vancy pude sentir su pasión por Rincón y por sus creaciones artísticas inspiradas en su belleza natural. Iván Caraballo Pagán, mejor conocido como “Vancy,” ha capturado por muchos años en sus pinturas imponentes atardeceres, paisajes coralinos, tortugas, ballenas y más.

Originally from the town of Hormigueros, he began painting at a very young age. Later in life, he was hired by the municipality to paint historical murals. However, his true passion was painting marine life. Vancy has been surfing, snorkeling, and diving off the coast of Rincón from a very young age. He has an incredible knowledge about the marine life found in Rincón and loves to share fun facts with others.

Natural del pueblo de Hormigueros, Vancy comenzó a pintar a temprana edad. Más adelante fue empleado por el municipio para que pintara murales históricos, Sin embargo, su verdadera pasión son los paisajes submarinos. Desde muy joven, él ha estado practicando el surfismo, el buceo de tubo y el scuba en las costas de Rincón. Tiene un vasto conocimiento de la vida submarina de Rincón y le encanta compartir datos curiosos de la misma.

According to Vancy, “Rincón has been a town of pure inspiration for my art. The beaches provide everything I need. Sometimes people ask me,’ How do you come up with ideas?’ I reply by saying, when you truly love something, inspiration just comes to you, the ideas just flow.”

Comerciantes Rincoeños Inc

I

n 2010, a group of community members held the first ‘welcoming the summer’ 4th of July party at Los Almendros beach. It was an event where the community could come together and have fun while also promoting their business and networking with other business owners. Little did they know that in 2018, eight years later, this would turn into something much larger.

The Comerciantes Rincoeños Inc. is a model example of how a community can come together and unite in order to accomplish a common goal. After hurricane Maria, the economy, both local and island wide, found itself severely affected. In Rincón, tourism, both foreign and internal, was at an all time low. What to do now?

The group is now known as Comerciantes Rincoeños Inc. They work together to unite and provide promotion and support to business owners in and around the Rincón area.

Their board of directors is composed of local business owners, Dios Meddys Candelaria (President) from La Lomita de YiYo, Vanessa Candelaria (Vice President) from Aloha Surf, Francés Torres (Secretary) from Reys Promotion, Iris Irizarry (Treasurer) from JAD Maintenance Services, Zulaika Ventura (Vice Treasurer) from El Timbriche, and spokespeople Nicky Muñoz from Ela’s Bar, Freddie Lorenzo from El Nuevo Encuentro, Elías Alicea from Fresh & Sweet, and Hector Muñoz from La Rincoeña.

n 4 de julio de 2010, un grupo de miembros de la comunidad se reunió en la Playa Los Almendros para celebrar una fiesta de “bienvenida al verano”. Era una actividad recreativa para la comunidad que también promovía sus negocios y el contacto y comunicación con otros comerciantes. Nunca se imaginaron que ocho años más tarde, en el 2018, este esfuerzo se transformaría en algo mayor.

La organización Comerciantes Rincoeños Inc. Es un ejemplo de como las comunidades pueden unirse y trabajar hacia un fin común. Luego del Huracán María, tanto la economía local como estatal se vieron muy afectadas.

En Rincón, tanto el turismo interno como extranjero experimentaron bajas cuantiosas. ¿Qué hacer?

El grupo, hoy conocido como Comerciantes Rincoeños Inc., trabajan juntos en pro de la unión, la promoción y el apoyo a los comerciantes de Rincón y áreas aledañas.

from the outside into “La Estación”, you can distinguish a wide range of individuals: local, foreign; and some characters from the town of Rincón. It is easy to notice that everyone seems to be synchronized with each other as they enjoy themselves. They move with ease, being themselves and fearless of judgment. Though at first sight “La Estación” seems to be another bar in Rincón, very quickly you discover that it is just a façade, and the establishment has the unique gift of hiding its true charm. Its peculiarity resides in the ambiance, diversity and history within its walls. Once inside, you fall prey to the affable demeanor and charm of the managers José Manuel (Manny) Lorenzo Orellana and his son José Manuel (Manolo) Lorenzo Cáceres.

esde las afueras puedes observar una variedad de personas; algunos son locales, otros son extranjeros y unos cuantos parecieran ser personajes del pueblo de Rincón. Es fácil distinguir que la gente está sincronizada pasando un buen momento. Se mueven de manera fluida, permitiendo ser quienes son sin temor a ser juzgados. Aunque de primer instante “La Estación” pareciera ser una barra adicional en el pueblo de Rincón, al poco tiempo descubres que es sólo un camuflaje, una habilidad que posee para esconder su verdadero encanto. Su peculiaridad reside en el ambiente, diversidad e historia que la habita. Una vez te encuentras dentro del local te pierdes con su autenticidad y el carisma de sus dos administradores: José Manuel (Manny) Lorenzo Orellana y su hijo José Manuel (Manolo) Lorenzo Cáceres.

The elements of décor consist of objects and images that seem to have stood still in time. The register is from 1895. On its walls you find swords from the Civil War and the Spanish-American War, antique shelves and tools, vintage and collectors’ items. -Of course; since “La Estación” is the oldest bar in Rincón, being in business for more than a century!

Its history starts as the vision of Víctor Lorenzo González, a young entrepreneur from the town of Aguada and grandfather of the current owner. In his youth Víctor spent much time learning about business.

Every day, he would walk six hours back and forth through the mountains of Aguada to his job at the central warehouse in Mayagüez. It was there where he learned about island business and got inspired to launch his personal ventures. In 1918 he started his first business. Since he had no refrigeration, or drinking water available at the time, he started by selling: Maví (a fermented drink), coconut candy, sweet bread called bomboto, ripe bananas, sugar, and many other products that required no refrigeration.

With the advent of industrialization, Víctor’s original concept evolved into what is known as “General Store.” Thus Víctor started selling tools, clothing, food, and beverages in his establishment. Since the store was located near the train station, it was named “La Estación” during the 1940’s.

Su interior posee objetos e imágenes que aparentan estar detenidos en el tiempo. Su caja registradora es del año 1895, en una de sus paredes puedes encontrar una variedad de espadas de la Guerra Civil y la Guerra Hispanoamericana, tablillas y herramientas antiguas como también un sin número de productos descontinuados y de colección. No es para menos pues “La Estación” es la barra más antigua del pueblo de Rincón. Este establecimiento ha cumplido sus 100 años de servicio.

Su historia comienza bajo la visión de un adolescente emprendedor, el aguadeño Víctor Lorenzo González, abuelo del actual propietario.

Víctor, en su años de adolescencia, invirtió gran parte de su tiempo en aprender sobre el mundo de los negocios. Realizaba largas caminatas desde las montañas del pueblo de Aguada hasta los almacenes centrales del pueblo de Mayagüez donde trabajaba.

Caminaba unas seis horas diarias. Fue ahí donde aprendió sobre el comercio de la Isla y donde se inspiró en emprender sus proyectos personales. En 1918 comenzó su primer negocio. Para aquellos tiempos no había luz o agua a su disposición, por lo que comenzó vendiendo productos como: el jugo fermentado “Maví”, los dulces de coco, los panecillos bombotó, guineos maduros, azúcar, entre muchos otros productos que no necesitaban refrigeración. Una vez comenzada la industrialización, el concepto original de Víctor se fue transformando en lo que se conoce como un “general store”.

Por lo que Víctor comenzó a vender herramientas, ropa, comida y bebida en su establecimiento. Al negocio estar ubicado cerca de la estación del tren, para los años 1940, adquirió el nombre de “La Estación”.

After 40 years in business, Víctor hands over the family business to his son Victor Samuel Lorenzo Velázquez, father of the current owner. Under Samuel’s administration a Domino Club was created, which attracted new clientele, and strengthened the already existing community atmosphere that still distinguishes the establishment.

Víctor Samuel, maintained and respected his father’s original concept, but also adjusted to the changing economy of the times. He changed the inventory by stocking popular items in demand. In 1989, after decades working the store, his son, José Manuel (Manny) Lorenzo, current manager and owner, takes over the store. He also tuned in into the atmosphere and life of his surroundings.

Manny, as he is known in town, and his son “Manolo”, feel great admiration for their family and business history. They have witnessed its growth throughout the years. There was a time during the 90’s in which “La Estación” was the only business open in Rincón. It seems that their ability to flow with ease through time resides in the quality of their customer service, their respect and commitment with the Rincon community, local and foreign.

Luego de 40 años de servicio Víctor decide pasarle el negocio familiar a su hijo, Victor Samuel Lorenzo Velázquez, padre del actual dueño. Bajo la administración de Samuel, se creo un club de dominó que integró una gama nueva de clientes y fortaleció el sentido de comunidad que hoy día aún destaca al local. Víctor Samuel, sostuvo y respetó el concepto original de su padre a pesar de que se adaptó a la nueva economía de su época. Es decir, ajustó la mercancía a los productos más solicitados de su tiempo. Luego de décadas dedicadas a la tienda; para el año 1989 la tienda pasó a herencia de su hijo José Manuel (Manny) Lorenzo Orellana actual propietario y administrador. Quien ha absorbido toda la esencia y vida transitada por este lugar. Manny, como lo conocen y su hijo “Manolo”, sienten una gran admiración por la historia de su familia como la historia de su negocio. Han visto como su establecimiento ha ido creciendo a través del tiempo. En los años noventa “La Estación” tuvo un periodo donde era el único establecimiento abierto en el pueblo de Rincón. Pareciera que su habilidad de navegar en el tiempo se debe a la calidad de su servicio, el respeto y compromiso con la comunidad rincoeña como con la comunidad de extranjeros que a ella llegan.

In January, 2019 Manny will celebrate 30 years as owner of “La Estación.” He says he has never had to invest money in promoting the business since “Everyone knows it.” He adds, “When people come through that door, it gives me great pleasure to see their faces and reactions.”

For him, the soul of his business lives on the footprints left, and dance steps taken, by people on its tiled floors for more than 80 years. “My bar is a museum, a well-kept secret, a hidden treasure.” And it is without a doubt; but “La Estación” is not only an honest space, but also an ode to music, art, and recreation. You could sit down, watch your surroundings, listening to stories as the music of Willie Colón’s Salsa or Rock music of bands like “The Doors” play.

It is an old and everlasting establishment. But time can pass very quickly. You can spend your time eating good Tacos or Quesadillas, drinking a cold beer, playing Super Nintendo, shooting darts or joining a promising Ping Pong match. But there is no doubt that a visit to “La Estación” will take you away from the daily routine or better said, it will add a creative spark to your daily routine. At “La Estación” there are no strangers, just new friends you have not yet met.

La Estación is also notoriously famous for the Gringomania party which takes place once a month during the winter season. The first will take place at the end of December.

Make sure not to miss these events.

En enero “Manny” cumple 30 años como propietario.

Según cuenta nunca ha tenido la necesidad de invertir en promociones para su negocio. “Todo el mundo lo conoce” cuenta. “Cuando la gente entra por esa puerta las expresiones faciales que hacen y la manera en que reaccionan me causa una gran satisfacción” relata. Para él el alma de su negocio está en el tiempo, en los pasos y bailes que la gente a dado en sus losetas de más de 80 años.

“Yo veo a mi bar como un museo, un secreto o un tesoro escondido”. Y sin duda alguna lo es. Pero “La Estación” no sólo es un espacio genuino, sino que también es una Oda a la música, el arte y la diversión. Mientras estás sentado, entretenido mirando todos los alrededores o escuchando historias, también puedes escuchar de fondo a Willie Colón cantando salsa o bandas de rock como “The Doors”. Para ser un bar antiguo y perdurable también es efímero. El tiempo lo puedes invertir entre una cerveza fría, comiéndote unos buenos tacos o quesadillas, jugando Súper Nintendo, daldos o prometiendo una buena partida en la mesa de pimpón. De lo que no hay duda es de que una visita a “La Estación” te sacará de la cotidianidad del día o mejor dicho le dará un toque creativo a la cotidianidad. En “La Estación” no hay extraños, solamente amigos que nunca has conocido.

La Estación también es notoriamente famosa por su evento “Gringomania”. Se lleva a cabo una vez al mes durante la temporada. El primer evento de esta temporada será a finales de diciembre. No te lo puedes perder.

Something exceptional has taken place in Rincón and in Puerto Rico during the past few months; Chrisin Límites has arrived to Rincón.

n los últimos meses en Rincón y en Puerto Rico entero ha surgido algo excepcional.

Christopher González Caro, is a brave young man from Rincón. With an unlimited desire and determination to make a difference, he has achieved one of his lifetime dreams. Additionally, he is the first young man with Down Syndrome in creating and opening his first food business in Puerto Rico.

Christopher González Caro, joven rincoeño de carácter atrevido por la vida y de hacer la diferencia sin límites, logra uno de sus mayores sueños en la vida. No solo eso, es el primer joven con síndrome de down en crear y abrir su propio negocio de comida en Puerto Rico.

Let’s meet him!

Since childhood, Chris has been independent and quite persistent in everything he wishes to achieve. All that is possible, thanks to his parents, who, since early childhood, have been devoted to providing him the necessary skills so he could become self-sufficient. They have strived for him to attend regular school, to be independent, to work hard for his grades, and socialize with children his own age.

During his free time, this talented young man enjoys playing video games, and driving, (yes, driving!), since he has his driving license. He also volunteers with non-profit organizations; and like any good Puerto Rican, he loves to dance. He currently belongs to the group Cultura Sin Barreras (Culture without Borders) of Salón Angelitos de Amor. As a dancer, he has represented and honored Puerto Rico abroad in more than five countries.

If you think this is enough? Not by far. His love and passion for food has moved him to pursue a higher education degree. He currently holds a degree in Culinary Arts from the Inter American University in Aguadilla.

Desde pequeño ha sido independiente y persistente hasta lograr lo que desea. Todo se lo debe a sus padres que desde niño se han enfocado en brindarle los conocimientos necesarios para que no pase necesidades en algún momento dado. Le han brindado la oportunidad que asistiera a un salón regular, dependiente a nadie, que luchara por sus notas y compartiera con niños de su propia edad.

Este joven talentoso en su tiempo libre disfruta jugar a los videojuegos, ¡guiar! si guiar, ya que cuenta con su licencia de conducir, participar en fundaciones sin fines de lucro y como todo buen boricua, le encanta bailar. Actualmente es perteneciente al grupo Cultura Sin Barreras del Salón Angelitos de Amor. A través del baile ha tenido la oportunidad de poner el nombre de Puerto Rico en alto en más de cinco países en el mundo. ¿Creen que es suficiente? Su amor por la comida y su pasión por la cocina le motivaron a llevar sus estudios a otro nivel.

Hoy día, Christopher ha culminado sus estudios y cuenta con una especialización en Artes Culinarias de la Universidad Interamericana en Aguadilla.

The next step? To open his own business. And the best choice, of course, is to work doing what he loves so much: cooking. That is how Chrisin Límites was born.

This name is as unique and authentic as its owner, and it comes from the fact that there are no barriers in Christopher’s life that he cannot surpass. He is here to demonstrate that is possible to achieve your dreams.

He has designed a completely original menu combined with homemade recipes. His signature dish is Canastas Fritas (Fried Baskets) Chris’ Style, stuffed with chicken, lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese, and a secret sauce; accompanied by green rice.

Rincón is a fertile market for tourists, but the main clientele is local. However, Chris says that foreign visitors are always searching for vegan dishes. Since he is always searching for ways to innovate and satisfy the needs of his clients, he has added a vegan option for his signature dish, offering a Canasta stuffed with grain salad.

What would define Christopher as a person? To dream big! One of his goals is to open a restaurant where he can offer employment to special people like him and through this effort contribute to Puerto Rican economy.

His authenticity as a person is as big as his heart. When I asked him, “Christopher, what makes you unique? “He replies, “No matter if I have a condition, I just expect people to get to know me and see that I am capable of achieving everything I set myself to do.”

Let us dream and persist like our beloved Christopher.

There are no barriers that cannot be conquered, it is just a matter of determination.

Creando así un menú completamente original y con recetas hechas como en casa. Dentro de sus exclusividades cuenta con la especialidad y ricura de su plato principal, canastas fritas al estilo chris rellenas de pollo o carne, lechuga, tomate, queso rallado, salsa secreta y su acompañante de arroz verde.

Rincón es un pueblo hermoso, rico en turismo pero, su mercado principal es local. The Brothers Pizza

T

he Brother’s Pizza is located in the heart of Rincón’s plaza and has maintained its original purpose of supplying good food at a reasonable price since its opening day on May 13, 1996. The family owned restaurant opened on Mother’s Day, and has honored its vision of creating a family friendly atmosphere ever since. “I wanted to keep it simple so everyone felt welcomed no matter how much money they had,” said Francisco Muniz, the owner of The Brother’s Pizza.

A native Rincoeño, Francisco named his restaurant The Brother’s Pizza, because he started it with three of his brothers and two of his nephews. “My brother-in-law had a pizzeria in the Bronx and brought the concept to Rincón opening Napolitano which still operates today. After working with his family at Napolitano, Francisco decided to open his own pizzeria and The Brother’s Pizza was born.

he Brother’s Pizza se encuentra ubicado dentro del corazón de la plaza de Rincón y ha mantenido su propósito original de proveer buena comida a precios razonables desde su apertura en mayo 13 del 1996. Este restaurante de familia, abrió sus puertas durante un día de las madres y desde ese día se ha mantenido fiel en su visión de brindarle a sus clientes un ambiente familiar.. “Es un nivel que le brega a todo el mundo, con chavos o sin chavos” dijo Francisco Muñiz, el propietario de The Brother’s Pizza.

Original de Rincón, Francisco le llamó The Brother’s Pizza a su restaurante ya que al abrir, era una operación de familia, con tres de sus hermanos y dos de sus sobrinos. “Mi cuñado tenía una pizzería en el Bronx y trajo el concepto con él, cuando regresó a Rincón, así comenzó Napolitano Pizza, que también se encuentra aquí en en pueblo.

Francisco’s mission above all else is to provide an exceptional experience and service to his customers and community. “Our original style pizza at The Brother’s Pizza is thin crust, but if you’d like it thick, just ask us and we’ll make it however you’d like,” Francisco said.

“We can also make stuffed crust,” he added. He wants his customers to feel like they are at home when they come to his restaurant. “I had a couple who would come in bringing their own basil and cherry tomatoes that I would put on their pizza without extra charge,” Francisco said. It’s personal touches like this and his Tostone Pizza for people who want a gluten free crust that keep his customers coming back. In addition to pizza Francisco and his team prepare sandwiches and frituras daily. Francisco cooks all the food that goes into their comida Criolla menu which can include arroz con habichuelas, arroz con gandules and various protein options depending on the day. To overcome the sometime tricky Plaza parking, Francisco created a solution by introducing curbside service for all his customers. Call the restaurant at (787) 210-1615, place your order, honk your horn when you arrive in front and a server will bring your meal right to your car.

La misión principal de Francisco “Frankie”, es sobre todo la de brindar una experiencia y servicio excepcional, a sus clientes y comunidad. “Nuestra pizza original aqui en The Brother’s Pizza, es la pizza thin crust, pero pero si te gusta gruesa, solo nos dices y te la preparamos como tu desees,” dijo Francisco. “Hasta la preparamos de masa rellena,”el añadió. El quiere que sus clientes se sientan como en su casa, cuando comen en su restaurante.

Brother’s Pizza is open from 5 A.M. until 11 P.M., 7 days a week and hosts karaoke most Friday nights. When asked if he had any additional details he’d like to share with our readers, Francisco said, “We’ve been here for 26 years, and are very grateful to our patrons for their support. It is because of them that we are who we are today.”

The Brother’s Pizza abre desde las 5 AM hasta las 11PM, 7 días a la semana y tienen karaoke todos los viernes. “Tenía una pareja que me traía su propia albahaca y tomate cherry, y nosotros se lo añadíamos a su pizza” dijo Francisco.

Son detalles como este y su pizza de tostones para los que desean una pizza libre de gluten lo que hace que sus clientes regresen año tras año. En adición a las pizzas, Francisco y su personal también preparan sándwiches y frituras a diario y al momento.

Francisco prepara toda la comida que se sirve en el menú criollo, el cual incluye arroz con habichuelas, arroz con gandules, con diferentes opciones de proteínas dependiendo del día. Para remediar el problema de estacionamiento en el área alrededor de la plaza, Francisco creó una solución e introdujo el servicio de acera, para sus clientes. Llame al restaurante al (787) 210 - 1615, haga su pedido, permita 15 minutos, se estaciona en el área de carga, toca su bocina y uno de los empleados le entrega su orden a su puerta.

Si lo que busca es un pedacito del viejo Rincón, mientras está en la Plaza, pase por “Brothers” (hermanos), y dígales que El Coquí, los envió.

It was Bomba Night at Calypso. It was a full house. Everyone was enjoying a night filled with music, drums, and ancestral rhythms, offered to the ocean by the dancing breeze. All of a sudden, a minute shape, her skin the color of chocolate, timidly took the center of the circle and began to dance. In between each step, she closed her eyes and listened, and then would pause again, moving her body, more by instinct than by technique, more by inspiration than imitation.

Era noche de Bomba en Calypso. Casa llena y todos disfrutando de una noche de música y tambores, de ritmos ancestrales que el viento danzante llevaba hasta el mar.

De pronto una figura menuda, del color del chocolate, tímidamente toma el centro del círculo y baila. Entre paso y paso cerraba sus ojos y escuchaba, se movía, pausaba, volviéndose a mover más por instinto que por técnica, más por inspiración que por imitación.

That was the first time I met Ariana Hawkes Valentín.

Everyone fell in love with that girl who would sway to the beat of the cuá, the maraca and the barriles. She seemed to understand the secret language of the black and white notes, not only written on paper, but written within the heart. Since then, we have born witness to her growth as an artist.

Esa fue la primera vez que vi a Ariana Hawkes Valentín, y todos nos enamoramos de esa niňa que se mecía al compás del cuá, la maraca y los barriles, que parecía entender el lenguaje secreto de la blancas y las negras en el pentagrama o en el corazón. Y así la hemos visto crecer, destacarse y formarse en las artes.

Many years have passed since that first encounter, and Ariana, with the relentless support of her mother, Betsy Valentín Agrón, has continued to blossom into a young woman, and a musician who plays the clarinet and the recorder, as well as some guitar and piano.

Muchos años han pasado desde ese primer encuentro, y Ariana, con el incansable apoyo de su madre Betsy Valentín Agrón se ha convertido en una adolescente e instrumentalista manejando la flauta dulce y el clarinete además de conocimiento del teclado y la guitarra.

At the age of 15, Ariana has conquered many challenges, and this coming Summer, she is traveling to New York City to participate in an educational event under the direction of Prof. Luis E. Rosado Ramos of the Academia Musical Da Capo, Inc. from Aguada. The event, Puerto Rico para el Mundo 2019 (Puerto Rico for the World, 2019) will be held at Carnegie Hall, the world renowned concert hall.

A los 15 aňos de edad, Ariana ha sobrepasado muchos retos y este verano, viajará a Nueva York en un viaje educativo y donde participará, bajo la dirección de Profesor Luis E. Rosado Ramos de la Academia Musical Da Capo, Inc. de Aguada, en el evento Puerto Rico para el Mundo 2019 a celebrarse en el Carnegie Hall, la mundialmente reconocida sala de conciertos.

Ariana attends Manuel García Pérez High School in Rincón, registered in the business program. She studies music at the Academia Musical Da Capo, Inc. in Aguada and plays clarinet with the Rincón Municipal Band. When I asked Ariana about her plans for the future, with a self-assurance very rarely found in youngsters her age, she answered.

“I plan on graduating High School, study Accounting and Business Management at the University of Puerto Rico, and continue to pursue my musical studies.”

More than congratulations, at this moment Ariana needs the support of all rincoeňos so she could meet her goal of raising the $1500 she needs for her trip. Ariana está en 10mo grado cursando estudios en el Programa de Comercio de la Escuela Manuel García Pérez de Rincón además de recibir instrucción musical en la Academia Musical Da Capo, Inc. de Aguada, y participar como clarinetista en la Banda Municipal de Rincón. Cuando le pregunté sobre sus planes futuros, con un aplomo y seguridad poco característica de su edad, ella me respondió. “Planifico graduarme de escuela superior, estudiar Contabilidad y Manejo de Empresas en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y continuar mis estudios musicales”.

Más que felicitaciones, en este momento Ariana necesita del apoyo de todos los rincoeňos para que pueda cumplir la meta de recaudar los $1500 que necesita para cubrir sus gastos de viaje. In loving memory of Cindy Rice (May 1950 – November 2018) En Memoria de Cindy Rice (Mayo de 1950 - Noviembre de 2018)

C

indy Rice was a kind, loving, and standout member of the Rincón community for many years. Born in Corning, New York to Warren and Lucy Rice, she graduated from high school and continued her studies, eventually graduating, from the State University of New York at Farmingdale where she received her degree in Art Design.

About the same time in 1968 , Cindy also started surfing.

In 1973, along with childhood friend Mary Rimavicus , she traveled to Rincón, Puerto Rico for the first time. After her visit to Puerto Rico, Cindy lived on the island of Tortola for a couple of years traveling, back and forth via ferry to St. Thomas, where she would sell jewelry.

Eventually, Cindy found her way back to Rincón where she designed, sewed, and sold her line of handmade clothing. According to Mary Rimavicus, “Cindy was an incredibly talented seamstress, artist, and designer.” Later on, she acquired Calypso Café, which she owned and managed for 28 years. According to Mary, “Calypso was already a small bar/restaurant when she acquired it. With the help of her father and others, Cindy physically worked with them to improve it and make it what it is today. Cindy was a ‘trailblazer’ for sure.”

An admirable feat! It takes a strong person to manage a bar and restaurant as busy and well known as Calypso. Adjacent to Calypso, Cindy also opened Caribbean Casuals boutique and Hot Wavz Surf Shop. She was truly a business minded visionary.

Cindy was also an animal lover, gifting a large part of her heart towards animal rescue. According to Mary, “Cindy was very giving and kind. She always helped those in need, whether it was a person or an animal.”

On top of everything mentioned above, Cindy loved Rincón and its natural beauty. In an article Cindy wrote many years ago, she stated that “ Fortunately, Rincón really hasn’t changed that much yet. Thanks to the love, respect, and devotion from all who try to preserve its culture and beauty, we are fortunate to still live here in tranquility. Tres Palmas is the soul of this town! If we were to lose this very special part of paradise, Rincón would never, ever, be the same. It is the very jewel that everyone in this world would cherish and we can not let anyone spoil it for our future generations.”

indy Rice era una mujer amable, cariňosa y por muchos años, miembro sobresaliente del pueblo de Rincón. Cindy nació en Corning en Nueva York, y sus padres eran Warren y Lucy Rice. Ella se graduó de escuela superior, y luego prosiguió estudios superiores en la Universidad del Estado de Nueva York en Farmingdale, graduándose con un bachillerato en diseño. En esa misma época, cerca del 1968, es cuando ella comienza a practicar el surfismo. En el 1973, junto a su amiga de la infancia, Mary Rimavicus, viaja a Rincón, por primera vez. Después de esta visita a Puerto Rico, Mary vive en la isla de Tortola por 2 aňos y viajaba en ferry a San Thomas para vender prendas.

Eventualmente Cindy halla el camino de vuelta a Rincón donde diseñaba, cosía y vendía su línea de ropa hecha a mano. Mary Rimavicus nos brinda su opinión, “Cindy era una costurera, diseñadora y artista increíblemente talentosa”. Luego compró el Calypso Café, del cual fue propietaria y administró por 28 aňos. Nos cuenta Mary que “Calypso era una pequeña barra y restaurante cuando Cindy lo compra. Ella trabajó mano a mano junto a su padre y otras personas en las reparaciones y mejoras para convertir el local en lo que es hoy día. Ella fue una verdadera pionera”. Una labor admirable, pues toma ser una persona fuerte para administrar una barra y restaurante tan conocido y ajetreado como Calypso.

Al lado de Calypso, Cindy abre Caribbean Casuals Boutique and Hot Wavz Surf Shop. De verdad que era una visionaria para los negocios.

Cindy era también amante de los animales, ofrendando su corazón a la labor del rescate de animales. Nos cuenta Mary que “Cindy era generosa y amable, siempre ayudaba a todo el que estuviera en necesidad, ya fuera una persona o un animal”.

Y como si esto fuera poco, Cindy amaba a Rincón y a su natural belleza. En un artículo que ella escribió aňos atrás, ella dice, “Afortunadamente Rincón no ha cambiado tanto todavía. Gracias al amor, al respeto y a la devoción de todos aquellos que tratan de preservar su cultura y su belleza, tenemos la suerte de vivir aquí en tranquilidad. ¡Tres Palmas es el alma de este pueblo! Si perdiéramos este pedazo tan especial del paraíso, Rincón nunca, nunca más sería el mismo. Es la joya que todos en este mundo valoramos y no podemos permitir que nadie lo arruine para las futuras generaciones”.

There is no doubt that the Rincón community will miss this special person, such a kind, hardworking, and loving human.

No hay duda que todos en Rincón extraňaremos a esta persona tan especial. Un ser humano agradable, trabajador y amoroso.
