Welcome/Bienvenido

Our holiday issue this year is all about “keeping it local.” We feature three local artists who create unique hand-made gifts perfect for the holidays. Julia Kasper creates colorful stained glass pieces and solders her own jewelry made from sea glass and shells. Sashary Rivera is a sea glass expert, creating jewelry and holiday ornaments from genuine Rincón glass. Wilfredo Matias makes his own soaps, lotions, and other beauty products using organic essential oils and other products from the island.

Our cover also follows the “keeping it local” theme. My mother, Sandra Ríos, made the point that we needed more character on the cover. With the help of our neighbor, Carlos Chaparro, we set up a photo-shoot with El Negro Perea, Don Felipe and their horses Payaso and Pantero.

Julitza Nieves wrote a short story for this issue about her trip to Turin, Italy, where she represented Puerto Rico in the Slow Foods fair. She displayed her famous banana-ginger, mamey, and spicy mango marmalades, which also make great holiday gifts and are made from all local ingredients!

Finally, we feature a story about Mamma Mel’s Learning Center and Semillas para una Nueva Humanidad. Two new “alternative” options for the care and education of children and young adults in Rincón.

So when out looking for the perfect gift this holiday season, don’t forget that our town is home to dozens of artisans who put hours of hard work into perfecting their craft and depend on our patronage!

Nuestra edición navideña este año se trata sobre “mantenerlo local”. Presentamos a tres artistas locales que elaboran regalos únicos hechos a mano perfectos para las fiestas navideñas. Julia Kasper crea coloridas piezas con vidrieras y ensambla sus piezas de joyería las cuales realiza con cristales de mar y conchas. Sashary Rivera es una experta con los cristales de mar. Crea joyería y ornamentos festivos con cristales de mar los cuales recolecta en las playas de Rincón. Wilfredo Matías fabrica sus propios jabones, lociones y otros productos de belleza empleando aceites esenciales orgánicos y otros productos isleños.

Nuestra portada para esta edición también mantiene el lema de “mantenerlo local.” Mi madre, Sandra Ríos, me hizo el señalamiento de que necesitábamos presentar una portada con mayor carácter. Con la ayuda de nuestro vecino Carlos Chaparro preparamos una sesión de fotos con El Negro Perea, Don Felipe y sus caballos Payaso y Pantero.

Julitza Nieves redacto para esta edición una historia corta sobre su viaje a Turín, Italia, donde represento a Puerto Rico en la feria internacional Slow Foods. Ella presento sus famosas mermeladas de guineo-jengibre, mamey, y mango picante. ¡Estas son un gran regalo navideño y son hechas con ingredientes locales!

Para concluir, presentamos una historia sobre el centro de aprendizaje Mamma Mel’s Learning Center y sobre Semillas para una Nueva Humanidad. Estas son dos nuevas opciones “alternativas” para el cuidado y la educación de los niños y los jóvenes adultos en Rincón. ¡Así que, cuando estén en búsqueda del regalo perfecto para estas navidades, no se olviden de que en nuestro pueblo hay una docena de artistas que emplean muchas horas de arduo trabajo perfeccionando sus artesanías y dependen de nuestro patrocinio!

About the cover/ Sobre la portada The idea for our December cover shot came from my mother. While brainstorming, we noticed how many landscape and floral paintingsa we have featured and decided it was time to change things up a bit. We concluded that a bit more character was necessary on the cover.

My mom made a call to our neighbor Carlos Chaparro, and he promptly put us in touch with El Negro Perea, Don Felipe and their two loyal companions Payaso and Pantera. Perea was born and raised in “barrio” Cruces, and Don Felipe is from Vieques. They regularly travel across the island with their horses for work and for pleasure, even over seas to Vieques. El Negro Perea and Don Felipe have been cowboys (cattlemen) their entire lives. Their horses are everything to them and their livelihood depends on them.

According to Perea, “our work has always been as cowboys, we have always worked with horses and our livelihood has always depended on them.”

La idea para nuestra portada de diciembre provino de mi madre. Mientras pensábamos sobre la portada, nos dimos cuenta de cuantos paisajes y pinturas de flores habíamos destacado anteriormente y decidimos que era el momento de cambiar las cosas. Llegamos a la conclusión de que un poco más de carácter era necesario para nuestra portada.

Mi madre realizo una llamada a nuestro vecino Carlos Chaparro y él inmediatamente nos puso en contacto con El Negro Perea, Don Felipe y sus dos fieles compañeros Payaso y Pantera. Perea nació y se crió en el barrio Cruces de Rincón y Don Felipe es natural de Vieques. Ellos regularmente viajan a través de la isla con sus caballos por motivos de trabajo o por diversión, inclusive emprenden viajes a Vieques. El Negro Perea y Don Felipe han sido ganaderos todas sus vidas.

Sus caballos son todo para ellos y su subsistencia depende de estos. De acuerdo con Perea “nuestro trabajo siempre ha sido el de ganaderos, siempre hemos trabajado con caballos y nuestra subsistencia siempre ha dependido de ellos.”

Perea and Don Felipe told us a story about a time when they had to lasso about 60-70 wild cattle that were loose around the lighthouse. They had to lasso every single cattle by hand. This is not an easy job and can be very dangerous for both horse and rider. According to Perea and Don Felipe, cattle can be very dangerous and cause serious injuries.

Perea y Don Felipe nos relataron una historia de un tiempo en el que tuvieron que lacear entre 60-70 cabezas de ganado salvaje las cuales se encontraban en los alrededores del faro. Ellos tuvieron que lacear cada cabeza de ganado con sus propias manos. Este no es un trabajo fácil y puede ser muy peligroso tanto para el caballo como para el jinete. De acuerdo con Perea y Don Felipe el ganado puede ser muy peligroso y puede causar serias lesiones.

I was truly impressed at how much Perea and Don Felipe loved what they do. You could tell they had a special bond with Payaso and Pantera. Payaso has been Pereas companion for 4-5 years, and Pantera has been with Don Felipe for 10.

Verdaderamente me impresionó lo mucho que Perea y Don Felipe aman lo que hacen. Se puede percibir que existe una conexión especial con Payaso y Pantera. Payaso ha sido el compañero de Perea por 4-5 años y Pantera ha estado con Don Felipe por 10 años.

Festival de Festivales 2014 The Spanish Department celebrated its yearly “Festival de Festivales”. Although this year marked the return of the festivals from our Puerto Rican island. The culture, traditions, and culinary specialties formed base of the festival and showcased the pride of being Puerto Rican.

Everybody got to spend time with their families and learn about what makes us so special and what makes each “pueblo” so unique. What a night of fun and excitement, music and food!

Slow Foods Turin, Italy Written by Julitza Nieves/Translated by Cristina Nieves

Below, Julitza Nieves tells us about her experience in Turin, Italy where she represented Puerto Rico and her company Productos Montemar in the Slow Food: Salone del Gusto en Terra Madre convention.

I was the representative of Puerto Rico in the Slow Food: Salone del Gusto en Terra Madre convention. It was a great honor for me to be able to share with so many quality people: guardians of the earth. It all began on the airplane; I was already mentally prepared for a 10 hour (more or less in total) journey flying in the skies between Italy and Puerto Rico. In other words, you arrive floating; that is, after the experience of flying with the Emirates airline, which I highly recommend to anyone.

I was traveling with three other people from Orocovis, who were going to present their agro-ecologic class from the Botijas School in the convention. They were the teacher Cartagena and two other students.

When I got on the bus in Milan, I was filled with euphoria because I had arrived. Everybody was questioning where we came from. There were many colors and places that I sincerely didn’t know where they were located on the globe like Sri Lanka, Lesotho and Turkmenistan. However, the best thing was that we all spoke the same language in our hearts; we all loved the traditions of our respective countries, we respected individuality and we were all grateful for getting to know each other.

We went directly to the registration, and all of a sudden, there’s a whole world registering with their traditional clothing. For many farmers, that was the first time they had left their country. They came to present their projects, exhibit their creations (like me), meet similar people with their same interests and submit products for the project “Arca del Gusto” or the “Ark of Taste”.

From there, we continued to the opening ceremony, which I experienced almost entirely with tears of joy in my

Fui representante de Puerto Rico en la convención de Slow Food: Salone del Gusto en Terra Madre. Fue un gran honor compartir con tantas personas de calidad, guardianes de la tierra.

Todo comenzó en el avión, ya estaba preparada mentalmente para un maratón de 10 horas en el aire (más o menos en total) y 6 horas de cambio entre Italia y Puerto Rico. O sea que uno llega flotando, luego de la experiencia de viajar en la aerolínea Emirates, la cual recomiendo a cualquiera. Iba con tres personas de Orocovis que venían a presentar su clase de agroecología de la escuela Botijas, la maestra Cartagena y 2 estudiantes.

Al subir al autobús en Milán, siento mucha euforia por haber llegado. Todos se preguntan de dónde somos. Hay muchos colores y lugares que no se exactamente donde se encuentran como Sri Lanka, Lesoto, Turkmenistán. Lo bueno es que en el fondo hablamos el mismo idioma, a todos nos encantan las tradiciones de cada país, respetamos la individualidad y estamos agradecidos de conocernos.

Vamos directo al registro y de repente hay un mundo registrándose, con ropas tradicionales. Para muchos agricultores, es la primera vez que salen de sus respectivos países. Vienen a presentar sus proyectos, exhibir sus creaciones (como fue mi caso), conocer personas similares y someter productos para el proyecto del Arca del Gusto. De ahí a la ceremonia de apertura, en la cual estuve casi todo el tiempo llorando. Se presentaron 175 países y se proclamó un mensaje conmovedor sobre celebrar las tradiciones, mejorar las dietas en las escuelas y sembrar respetando nuestro entorno. Ahí conozco a una chef francesa que hace dos años dirige un restaurante que era de sus padres y un amigo de Nuevo México, que tiene una asociación HispanoTribal: con cocina comunitaria, matadero portátil y gente

organizada.

eyes. There were 175 countries. They received us with a beautiful and heartwarming message about celebrating our traditions, improving the diets in schools, and about how we need to cultivate the land with consciousness and respect for our environment. It’s there where I met a French chef who has been running her parents restaurant for over two years and a friend from New Mexico, who has a Hispanic-Tribal association with a communitarian kitchen and a portable slaughterhouse.

The next day, they picked me up really early from the hotel and I went directly to set up my stand. Productos Montemar-community of food- in an international fair, I’m still in shock. After setting up my stand, I decided to walk around the fair before anyone arrived.

There were five buildings to it (imagine a fair in five Convention Centers): 1 international, 3 for Europe and 1 laboratory of taste (where they carry out different culinary demonstrations). They also had an Enoteca, where you pay for tasting different wines with their explanations. There’s a honey bar open all the time, where you can taste honeys of different countries. Al otro dia me recogen temprano en el hotel y voy directo a montar mi puesto. Productos Montemar - comunidad de alimento - en una feria internacional, todavía no me lo creo. Decido entonces caminar la feria antes de que llegue la gente: 5 edificios (imagina una feria en un Centro de Convenciones por 5): 1 internacional, 3 de Europa y 1 laboratorio del gusto (donde hay demostraciones culinarias de distintos tipos), 1 Enoteca (donde pagas por probar diferentes tipos de vinos con sus explicaciones). Hay una barra de miel abierta todo el tiempo, donde puedes probar mieles de distintos países. Los días restantes transcurrieron como en un trance, donde yo vendía mermeladas, daba muestras de la salsa y conocía MUCHA gente. Solo pude participar de una charla de Oceanía y la presentación de las Filipinas me hizo darme cuenta que son muy parecidos a nosotros. Ellos fueron una colonia y aún la mentalidad colonial esta latente, de hecho el gobierno lo plantea como un obstáculo para progresar. Participe de los encuentros de América Latina y del Caribe, y, según Slow Food, la meta debe ser unir el Caribe, retante y necesario para sobrevivir mejor pienso yo.

The remaining days proceeded for me like a trance, where I was selling my jams, giving samples of the sauces and having the privilege of meeting a lot of people. I was capable of participating in one lecture from Oceania, and the presentation of the Philippines made me realize how similar they are to us. They were a colony for many years and that colonial mentality is still latent; in fact, the government presents it as one of the obstacles for progress. I participated in the gatherings of Latin America and the Caribbean, and according to Slow Food, the goal must be to unify the Caribbean, a challenging and necessary task for survival (in my opinion). I was capable of perceiving that the Italian government is more indulgent in terms of repression.

There is not much of the culture of fear and they don’t encourage vaccines like they do here. In Italy, there are no laws to determine the ages for smoking and drinking; the people are more educated; and even though it’s a subjective perception, I think they have better taste for the good things in life, at least in terms of eating well and enjoying good company.

Slow Food, for me, represents all of those that believe that a world of respect and peace is possible, where we forgive so many past injustices and we look upon the future, all united; where we celebrate the individualism of all human beings,= and we honor our ancestors and our traditions.

Pude percibir de Italia que el gobierno es más suave en lo que a represión se refiere, que no hay mucha cultura del miedo y que no fomentan las vacunas como hacen acá. Allá no hay leyes para determinar la edad de fumar y beber, el pueblo es más educado, y, aunque es subjetivo creo que hay mejor gusto por las cosas buenas de la vida, al menos en el buen comer y la buena compañía.

Slow Food, para mí nos representa a todos los que creemos que un mundo donde hay respeto y paz es posible, donde perdonamos el pasado de tantas injusticias y miramos hacia al frente, todos juntos, donde celebramos la individualidad de cada ser humano y honramos las tradiciones y los ancestros.

Julia,

Julia is a dreamer, artist, jewelry-maker, and entrepreneur. For years, Julia has wanted to create a space to call her own, in which she could share her creations.

Four years ago, Julia came to visit a friend in Rincón for what she thought would be only a few months. After about a week on the island, she decided to make her move more permanent.

And three years later, after a drive though the plaza with friend and local business owner Allison West, she found herself signing the lease to a small commercial location across from the church in the Rincon Plaza. It would become “Ocean State of Mind.”

Julia has always lived near the beach. She was raised in Rhode Island, also known as “the ocean state,” which is where Ocean State of Mind orginated from. The ocean has always been her biggest influence.

Prior to falling in love with Puerto Rico, Julia spent years living on Maui, “I just love the ‘island stlye of living’.” “My time in Maui truly influenced my jewelry designs and opened the doors for so many creative endevors.”

Julia, mostly a self-taught artist, has taken classes at Rhode Island School of Design and the Hoi No’eau, a visual arts center in Maui.

Cuatro años atrás, Julia vino a visitar a un amigo en Rincón, pensando que la visita iba a ser por unos cuantos meses. Luego de una semana en la Isla, ella decidió hacer de su estadía una más permanente. Tres años después, mientras manejaba por la plaza con su amiga y propietaria de un negocio local Allison West, Julia se encontró a si misma firmando los papeles de arrendamiento de un pequeño local comercial al cruzar de la Iglesia Católica en la Plaza de Rincón. Este se convertiría en la tienda “Ocean State of Mind”.

Julia, siempre ha vivido cerca de la playa. Ella se crió en Rhode Island, también conocido como “el estado del océano”. Es de esta relación que surge el nombre Ocean State of Mind. El océano siempre ha sido su mayor influencia.

Previo a enamorarse de Puerto Rico, Julia paso años viviendo en Maui, HI. Julia nos expresa que todo surge del amor que ella siente por el estilo de vida isleño. “Mi tiempo en Maui, realmente influenció mis diseños en joyerías y me abrió las puertas a muchísimas nuevas energías creativas.”

Wilfredo All Natural Written by:Sandra Ríos/Translated by: Cristina Nieves

Wilfredo Matias started the company “Wilfredo All Natural” after he found that a soap made from essential oils worked better than an expensive crème prescribed by a dermatologist to treat a skin condition. This experience motivated him to read books on medicinal aromatherapy and the advanced use of essential oils. He realized that through essential oils, not only could he start a business, but also help people in the process.

According to Wilfredo, the use of essential oils has its roots in ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians. They are also mentioned in the Bible. He considers essential oils as highoctane medicine that can be used without side effects to treat a variety of different ailments, such as muscular aches and pains, stress, and skin conditions. Tea trees oil, for example, has twenty-five different applications.

He currently sells therapeutic grade oils, soaps, crèmes, deodorants, mosquito repellents, and body cleansers. You can find him every Sunday morning at the Farmer’s Market in Rincón.

Wilfredo Matías, comenzó la compañía “Wilfredo All Natural” luego de descubrir que un jabón hecho de aceites esenciales funcionaba mejor que una costosa loción recetada por un dermatólogo para tratar una condición en la piel. Esta experiencia lo motivó a leer libros relacionados a la medicina con aromaterapia y el uso avanzado de los aceites esenciales. Fue así como se dio cuenta de que a través de los aceites esenciales él podía comenzar un negocio y ayudar a las personas.

De acuerdo con Wilfredo, el empleo de aceites esenciales tiene sus raíces en civilizaciones ancestrales como los egipcios. Además, estos se mencionan también en la Biblia. El considera que los aceites esenciales son como medicina de alto octanaje la cual puede ser utilizada sin riesgos de efectos secundarios. Estos pueden emplearse para tratar diferentes padecimientos tales como dolores y molestias musculares, estrés, y condiciones en la piel. Por ejemplo, el aceite de árbol de té posee veinticinco formas de aplicación diferentes.

El actualmente vende aceites de grado terapéutico, jabones, cremas, desodorantes, repelentes de mosquitos, y limpiadores de piel.

Artist: Sashary Rivera Although Sashary has been a local bartender for more than 15 years, her love and passion has always been designing works of art and jewelry with sea glass. Born in Mayagüez and having lived in Rincón most of her life, she has been a sea glass collector since she was very young.

Love That Rincón Glass started as a hobby.

She wanted to come up with something outside the box and non-traditional. It started as gifts for family and friends. She first got the opportunity to displat some her work in a couple of stores in Rehoboth Beach, DE and that’s how her project started to take off. Now she has various displays in Puerto Rico as well.

She is always looking for new and fun ways to use sea glass in her work. Christmas ornaments, sandals, rosaries, hats and tote bags are a few of the products she creates. She also incorporates elements such as Swarovski crystals and semiprecious stones to give a distinctive touch to her creations.

She has received much inspiration from her many travels through the Caribbean. According to Sashary, “places like St. Croix, St. Maarten, St. Lucia and, of course, Puerto Rico have always stunned me with their colorful and catchy art and fashion.”

Nacida en Mayagüez y habiendo vivido casi toda su vida en Rincón, ella ha sido una recolectora de cristales de mar desde muy joven.

Love That Rincón Glass nació como un pasatiempo. Ella deseaba ingeniar algo fuera de lo común y poco tradicional. Fue así como todo comenzó, creando regalos para familiares y amigos. Posteriormente, ella tuvo la oportunidad de exhibir algunos de sus trabajos en varias tiendas de Rehoboth, DE y fue así como su proyecto comenzó a desarrollarse. Ahora, ella también posee varias exhibiciones en Puerto Rico.

Sashary, siempre está en búsqueda de nuevas y divertidas formas para emplear los cristales de mar en su trabajo. Decoraciones navideñas, sandalias, rosarios, sombreros y bolsos son algunos de los productos que ella ha creado.

Además, ella incorpora elementos como cristales Swarovski y piedras semi-preciosas para otorgarle a sus creaciones un toque distintivo.

Ella ha recibido muchísima inspiración de sus numerosos viajes a través del Caribe. De acuerdo con Sashary, “lugares como Santa Cruz, San Maarten, Santa Lucia y por supuesto, Puerto Rico siempre me han asombrado por sus vibrantes y coloridas creaciones de arte y sus modas.”

Want to make the move to Rincón but feeling unsure about schooling for your children? Already an established family and don’t know where to educate your kids? For many years, childcare services in Rincón have been limited to public schools and just a few daycare centers. Now families have a wider choice for their children. Both Mamma Mel’s Learning Center and Semillas para una Nueva Humanidad (Seeds for a New Humanity) are new educational options in Rincón that offer an alternative to the norm.

Melanie Smith from Seattle, WA and husband Paz Ben-sira from Israel opened Mamma Mel’s Learning Center in August of 2013. When she moved to Rincón, she noticed the need for more options for the care and education of young children. Melanie has been a pre-school teacher, autism therapist, and ESL (English as a second language) teacher her entire career.

Mamma Mel’s serves children ages 2 ½ - 5 years old and will expand to include K-2 starting August 2015.

Ideally located on road 413 in Ensenada, Mamma Mel’s features a full immersion bilingual program where children are taught in both English and Spanish at the same time. The curriculum focuses on social, emotional, and language development. A very structured schedule is an important staple in the school. According to Melanie, “its important for the children to always know what’s happening next in order for them to feel safe and secure.”

¿Deseas mudarte a Rincón pero te sientes inseguro(a) en torno a la educación que recibirán tus hijos? ¿Ya son una familia establecida y no saben dónde matricular a sus hijos para recibir su educación? Por muchos años, el cuidado de niños en Rincón había sido uno limitado, siendo las opciones disponibles el sistema de instrucción público y algunos centros de cuido. No obstante, ahora las familias poseen mayores opciones para sus hijos. Tanto Mamma Mel’s Learning Center como Semillas para una Nueva Humanidad son nuevas opciones educativas en el área de Rincón. Estos ofrecen una alternativa diferente a la educación convencional.

Melanie Smith de Seattle, WA y su esposo Paz Ben-Sira de Israel abrieron Mamma Mel’s Learning Center en agosto de 2013. Cuando ella se mudó a Rincón, se percató de la necesidad que existía de mayores opciones para el cuidado y la educación de niños pequeños. Melanie durante toda su carrera ha sido una maestra preescolar, una terapeuta de autismo y una maestra de inglés como segundo idioma o ESL por sus siglas en inglés.

Mamma Mel’s ofrece sus servicios a niños entre las edades de 2 ½ a 5 años y desde agosto de 2015, expandirá sus servicios para ofrecer los grados de K-2. Idealmente localizado en la carretera 413 en el Bo. Ensenada, Mamma Mel’s ofrece un programa completamente bilingüe donde los niños reciben su educación tanto en español como en inglés. El currículo se enfoca en el desarrollo social, emocional y lingüístico. Además, tener un itinerario estructurado es uno de los cimientos más importantes de la escuela. De acuerdo con Melanie, “es muy importante para los niños siempre saber qué es lo que ocurrirá después ya que es así como ellos logran sentirse seguros y a salvo.”

The school also has a “no media” policy. You wont find any TV’s, computers or mainstream brand-named toys such as “action figures.” Healthy and natural snacks such as fresh fruit and vegetables are also provided.

Similar to Mamma Mel’s, Semillas para una Nueva Humanidad offers an alternative to your traditional schooling methods. I met up with Waleska Sallaberry, owner of Semillas, and she gave me a tour of her school/farm located on 5 acres of land on the border of Rincón and Aguada.

Semillas is a fully bilingual, independent, Waldorfinspired non-profit school from K-7 (growing through 12th grade) with a strong focus on sustainability, environmental health, art, music, nutrition and agriculture. The school has a large outdoor garden where students grow and harvest organic vegetables and fruits. Upstairs, there is a

Parecido a Mamma Mel’s, Semillas para una Nueva Humanidad ofrece una nueva alternativa educativa diferente a los métodos tradicionales de educación. Me reuní con Waleska Sallaberry, propietaria de Semillas y ella me concedió un recorrido a través de su escuela/ finca localizada en 5 acres de tierra en la colindancia entre Rincón y Aguada. Semillas es completamente bilingüe, independiente, y una escuela sin fines de lucro inspirada en el sistema de enseñanza Waldorf. La misma ofrece los grados de K-7 (creciendo para ofrecer hasta el grado 12) y posee una fuerte orientación hacia la sustentabilidad, la salud ambiental, el arte, la música, la nutrición y la agricultura. La escuela posee un jardín exterior grandísimo donde los estudiantes crecen y cosechan vegetales orgánicos y frutas. En el segundo nivel, hay un cuarto de germinación donde brotes de Page 49

The day I stopped by for a visit, lunch for the students consisted of organic quinoa salad, yum!

Since its inception, the school has carefully integrated high environmental standards and a commitment to raise environmental awareness in our community into its practices. Last November, the school was featured by the Green School Alliance, a global network of schools working together to solve climate and conservation challenges. Outdoor activities include yoga, gardening, composting, simple outdoor play (tree climbing) and daily visits to the river. Music and arts and crafts are also very important. Students participate in theater, woodcarving, knitting, cinematography, photography, cooking lessons and create mosaics.

Desde sus inicios, la escuela ha integrado cuidadosamente en su enseñanza altos niveles de conciencia ambiental y se ha comprometido en aumentar la conciencia ambiental en nuestra comunidad. El pasado noviembre, la escuela fue destacada por el Green School Alliance (Alianza de Escuelas Verdes), una red mundial de escuelas que trabajan juntas para resolver los problemas y los retos ambientales y de conservación. Las actividades al aire libre incluyen yoga, jardinería, compostaje, juegos al aire libre (trepar arboles) y visitas diarias al rio. Además, la música y las manualidades son actividades de gran importancia. Los estudiantes participan de actividades como el teatro, tallado, tejido, cinematografía, fotografía, lecciones de cocina y fabricación de mosaicos.
