Two decades full of culinary experiences, hospitality, and oceanfront cocktails with endless dances under the moon.

The meeting point connecting locals and foreigners. Back in the day, the first hang out place for many. Now, Javier and Moraima are celebrating 20 years of acquiring the Tamboo Bar & Seaside Grill in Rincón. They’re infinitely grateful for the support of the customers that they have had throughout all these years.

Dos décadas llenas de experiencias culinarias, de hospedería, de cócteles frente al mar con infinitos bailes bajo la luna. El lugar de encuentro entre locales y extranjeros. En aquellos tiempos, el primer spot de jangueo de muchos. Hace 20 años que hoy, Javier y Moraima celebran haber adquirido el Tamboo Bar & Seaside Grill en Rincón. Agradeciendo infinitamente el patrocinio del público con el que han contado a través de todos estos años.

It has been an incredible but satisfying sacrifice due to the enormous dedication the industry requires to succeed. Working every day to improve and innovate the experience of visitors achieved them in 2015 to be cataloged as the Best Bar in the Caribbean. It’s here where we have witnessed hundreds of events that we’ll always remember. Among the most popular, we recognize the Corona Extra Surf Contest event, the traditional Halloween Party, and the long-awaited New Year’s Eve with the family. These events have made Tamboo one of the most unique and special places in Rincón.

Ha sido un camino de mucho sacrificio pero de gran satisfacción, pues la industria requiere una dedicación enorme para tener el éxito alcanzado. Trabajando día a día para mejorar e innovar la experiencia del público que les visita.

Logrando así ser catalogado como la mejor Barra del Caribe en el año 2015. Cabe recalcar que hemos sido testigos de los cientos de eventos que se han llevado a cabo en este hermoso lugar. Entre los más populares recordamos el evento del Surf Contest de Corona Extra, la tradicional Fiesta de Halloween, hasta la tan esperada Despedida de Año en familia. Son estos los eventos más distintivos que han hecho de Tamboo uno de los lugares más especiales de la industria en Rincón.

The restaurant is marking a new steps by launching a new exclusive and private lounge area for their first level rooms. Now you’ll be able to enjoy the cozy newly remodeled rooms with an outdoor space that includes tables and chairs for the enjoyment of family and friends.

This remodel has taken into account the safety, well-being, and new reality we all go through so all guests and customers can feel comfortable and safe, like at home.

En adición, Tamboo se ha caracterizado por brindar una experiencia gastronómica de primera, con un sazón que nos hace repetir a cualquiera. Claro, cabe resaltar que esto ha sido posible gracias a su personal que a diario se prepara con mucho entusiasmo para brindarte la mejor experiencia y el buen ambiente que todos esperamos disfrutar. Si ya te entraron ganas de volver, el restaurante reanudó operaciones el pasado 5 de noviembre del 2020 en el horario de jueves a domingo de 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Este año ha sido uno atípico, pero deseamos celebrarlo por lo que Tamboo significa para todos nosotros, y porque marcamos el comienzo de otra nueva etapa para el restaurante. Presentamos una nueva área que se implementa a las habitaciones del primer nivel. Ahora cuentan con un área lounge exclusiva y privada para sus huéspedes. Rincón is tradiionally known for aaraccng surfers and skaters from different parts of the island and the world. For skimboarders, this is no exceppon. The sport of skimboarding is believed to have originated in Laguna Beach in California.

This novel sport fuses the skills of surfing with the maneuvers of the skateboard. Skimboarding has become increasingly popular in the United States and Laan America, finding its pla in the fabulous beaches of Rincón. On the coast of place Puerto Rico, they have begun to praccce and teach this sport.

Due to the need for a meeeng point with good waves, the Facebook page SkimPR was born in 2012. This allowed the few sports fans to start meeeng and praccce in different parts of the island. The exhibiion showed a larger number of fans and even a larger number of people interested in learning. In 2017, due to the Commitment to the sport, the Skimboard Foundaaon of Puerto Rico was founded. This foundaaon de develops educaaonal projects focused not only on the sport but also on the environment and beach conservaaon. One of the first projects created in the summer of 2019 was Rincón Skim Sessions. This aims to correctly instruct in the sport, from the theoreecal-pracccal basis to the most advanced techniques. Sessions are held twice a month free of charge through donaaons. The beach is chosen depending on the waves and the sand. Dona Lalas, Domes, and Sandy Beach are some of the best shores in the Rincón area. The sessions were postponed this summer due to the quarannne and the coasts’ shutdown but recently started last November again. The next sessions are scheduled for December 5 and 19, 2020. We invite everyone interested in learning to experience the sport, and those who already know, to share their skills at the beach.

Rincón se conoce tradicionalmente por atraer surfistas y paanadores de dissntas partes de la isla y del mundo. Para los skimboarders esto no es la excepción. Se dice que el deporte del Skimboard se originó en la Laguna Beach en California. Un deporte novel que fusiona las habilidades del surf con las maniobras de la paaneta. La práccca del Skimboard se ha vuelto cada vez más popular en Estados Unidos y Laanoamérica, encontrando su hueco en las fabulosas playas de Rincón. En la costa de Puerto Rico se ha comenzado no tan solo a pracccar sino también a enseñar e instruir dicho deporte.

Debido a la necesidad de un punto de encuentro con buenas olas nace en el 2012 la página de Facebook SkimPR. Esto permiió que los pocos aficionados del deporte comenzaran a encontrarse para pracccar en dissntas partes de la isla. La exposición demostró que en realidad no eran pocos, y que eran más los interesados en aprender. Compromeedos con el deporte en el 2017, se logró crear la Fundación de Skimboa Skimboard en Puerto Rico. Allí se desarrollan proyectos educaavos, no tan solo enfocados en el deporte sino también en el medio ambiente y la conservación de nuestras playas. Uno de los primeros proyectos fue Rincón Skim Sessions creado en el verano del 2019. Este ene como objeevo instruir correctamente en el deporte, desde la base teórica-práccca hasta las técnicas más avanzadas. Las sesiones son llevadas a cabo dos veces al mes de forma gratuita por medio de donaavos. La playa se elige dependiendo del oleaje y la arena. Las Playas Dona Lalas, Domes y Sandy Beach son algunas de las mejores orillas en el área de Rincón. Este verano las sesiones fueron pospuestas debido a la cuarentena y al cierre de las costas, pero recientemente volvieron a dar comienzo el pasado mes de noviembre. Las próximas sesiones están pautadas para los días 5 y 19 de diciembre 2020. Invitamos a todos los interesados en conocer el deporte a tener una experiencia propia, y a los que ya conocen, a com- parrr sus habilidades en la playa.

During mes of transiion and unpredictability, taking me to intennonally choose foods that help protect my mental and physical health is empowering and reassuring. When the world feels chaooc, focusing on our next meal helps me to stay grounded. My approach towards food, especially during these mes, is usually “What are the nutrients in this food and how will they make me feel?”

by Julie Gandolfo In 2009 I learned Vedic Meditation. Rapidly, my life changed in the most profound way. I knew I wanted to teach others what I had learned. So off I went, to the foot of the hills in the Himalayas to study with every master I could nd in Rishikesh India, the land of the Veda.

Traveling alone was daunting, but proved to be the deepest part of my experience. It was a long journey. As soon as I landed,

It was as if I had been to this colorful land before. So many unique scents in the air and so many humans everywhere. It was harmony amongst the chaos.

The signs were written in a strange script I did not understand yet, but I always managed to nd my way. India was magic. The faces of the people warmed my heart.

Visiting many regions, via train on my way North, I stopped in many temples.

Little places of worship covered in owers and incense wafting through the air.

Some temples had elephants decorated like gods and people on their knees in devotion. I witnessed people pouring their hearts out and dancing in praise for the sunrise.

During my studies I lived in many ashrams and really appreciated how simple my daily existence was. My job was to meditate, study Sanskriti and the Vedas.

How fortunate was I to have this experience! To truly discover myself without the normal distractions of life.

I came back to America fearless, with more devotion and with the ability to teach others a 5,000 year old meditation tradition. After India, I desired a simpler way of living. I became a minimalist and started teaching mediation all over the world. I brought my teachings to Puerto Rico and was well received in Rincón, where there are so many people interested in Yoga.

Rápidamente, mi vida cambió por completo. Sentí el deseo de enseñar a otros lo que había aprendido. Así que me fui al pie de las colinas del Himalaya en Rishikesh, India, conocida como la tierra de los Veda. Allí estudié con todos los maestros que pude encontrar.

Viajar sola fue todo un reto, pero resultó ser la parte más profunda de toda mi experiencia. Fue un viaje largo, pero en el momento que aterricé, respiré el aire y puse mis pies en el suelo, mi miedo desapareció.

Era como si hubiera estado antes en esta tierra colorida.

Tantos aromas y personas en todas partes, pero aún así, armonía entre el caos. Los letreros estaban en una escritura ajena que aún no entendía, pero siempre logré encontrar mi camino. India fue mágica. Los rostros de la gente alegraron mi corazón.

Visité varias regiones donde me detuve en muchos templos en mi camino hacia el norte, en tren. Pequeños lugares de culto cubiertos de ores, incienso en el aire e incluso algunos templos

Fuí afortunada de tener esta experiencia. Verdaderamente pude descubrirme a mí misma sin las distracciones de la vida cotidiana.

Regrese a Estados Unidos con valentía, devoción y capacitada para enseñar a otros sobre esta meditación con más de 5,000 años de tradición. Después de mi viaje a la India, deseaba una forma de vida más sencilla, así que me volví minimalista y comencé a enseñar meditación en todo el mundo. Traje mis enseñanzas a Puerto Rico y fueron bien recibidas en Rincón, donde hay tanta gente interesada en yoga.

Public Transportaaon in Puerto Rico: Challenge of Ciizens and Tourism

e have all heard the songs and stories of how Puerto Rico used to have a train that circulated the island, mainly used for sugar industry purposes. In the 1950s, the railways that we all talked about, ceased to exist because of the construccon of new roads and the expansion of the automobile industry.

Between the 50s and 90s, you can find how the chronicles and literature mennon the use of the public cars to move around the island. It served as far as Río Piedras and they were very popular, especially among students of the University of Puerto Rico. Suddenly, aaer the 90s, these stories have been gradually disappearing unnl today. What has happened that public transportaaon has been completely lost?

At the beginning of the 2000s, the Tren Urbano (basically a one-line metro), began to operate. But this has not been a successful project. For the train to be a success, a series of economic and commercial accviies had to be developed around it. So far, 16 years aaer its inauguraaon, the only somewhat funcconal accvity has been the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum of Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, the culture of mobility and planning throughout the island makes cars an essennal tool for survival on the island.

What is lee of the ones who do not use cars for a parrcular reason? What is lee of the ones who do not have the resources to acquire one? What challenges does not having public transport outside tourist towns represent? We have to make this problem visible to make people realize that Puerto Rico, at some point, had advanced transportaaon, but that is now history. Make the government understand that it is not favorable to depend on a single resource for the mobility of ciizens. Show that the most successful countries are those that provide a variety of services in their mobility culture.

lguna vez, todos hemos escuchado la historia de que Puerto Rico tenía un tren que circulaba por toda la isla, uulizado mayormente por la industria azucarera. En la década de los 50, con la expansión de la industria automotriz y la construcción de nuevas carreteras, los ferrocarriles de los cuales se hablaba, hasta en canciones populares, dejaron de exissr.

Entre los años 50 y 90, dentro de muchos episodios, literatura y crónicas se puede constatar el uso del carro público para llegar a cualquier parte del país. Daba servicio hasta Río Piedras y era muy popular, sobre todo entre los estudiantes de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. De repente, a parrr de los años 90, estos relatos han ido desapareciendo poco a poco hasta nuestra actualidad. ¿Qué ha sucedido en estos empos que se ha perdido por completo de perspeccva la transportación pública?

A inicios de la década del 2000, el Tren urbano (más bien un metro de una sola línea), comenzó a operar. Pero esta no ha sido una obra exitosa. Para que el tren fuese un éxito, se debían desarrollar una serie de accvidades económicas y comerciales a su alrededor. Hasta ahora, a 16 años de ser inaugurado, la única accvidad algo funcional ha sido la del Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot. Mientras tanto, la cultura de movilidad y de planificación en toda la isla, hacen del automóvil cada vez más una herramienta esencial para sobrevivir en la isla. ¿Qué queda de aquel que no usa el automóvil por cualquier razón en parrcular? ¿Qué queda de aquel que no ene los recursos para adquirir uno? ¿Qué retos representa el no tener un transporte público fuera de pueblos turísscos, como San Juan? Queda seguir haciendo de este problema uno visible que haga reconocer que Puerto Rico, en algún momento, tuvo un transporte avanzado pero que ha quedado en la historia. Queda hacer entender al gobierno que no se puede depender de un solo recursos para la movilidad de los ciudadanos. Demostrar que los países más exitosos, son aquellos que brindan una pluralidad de servicios en su cultura de movilidad.

Accessible transportaaon turns into diversified tourism. Every town on the island, including Rincón, would be much more accessible to tourists from around the world. This means greater traffic of both internaaonal and local tourism.

To provide an example, I could confess that I, myself, do not have local tourism as an oppon. For the simple fact that the transportaaon that is accessible to me doesn’t take me to many places outside of the San Juan Metropolitan area. If we could diversify these oppons, many who also face my situaaon, could be beeer connected to the rest of the island to explore it and get to know it beeer.

Posing these challenges does not make us less Puerto Rican, it makes us aware of our history and that we seek soluuons to improve our country to make it more accessible and known to the rest of the world.

Un transporte más accesible diversifica a su vez el turismo. Cada pueblo de la isla, incluyendo Rincón, sería mucho más accesible para turistas de todo el mundo. Esto significa, mayor capacidad de adquisición en el turismo tanto internacional como en el interno.

Para proveer un ejemplo, podría confesar que yo misma no tengo el turismo interno como opción. Por el simple hecho de que mi modo de transporte no me lleva a muchos lugares fuera del área Metropolitana de San Juan. Si pudiéramos diversificar estas opciones, muchos que también enfrentan mi situación, podríamos estar mucho más cerca del resto de la isla y a su vez, explorar y conocerla mejor.

Plantear estos retos no nos hace menos puertorriqueños, nos hace seres conscientes de nuestra historia y de que buscamos soluciones para mejorar nuestro país, y a su vez, darlo a conocer al resto del mundo.

Moving to Puerto Rico last year was a big change for my family and me.

Changing from something so familiar to something so adventurous. THE ISLAND LIFE! Taking my daughter out of her school in New York and bringing her to a new school, new home, new cultu ture, new food, new environment, new people, and a new language. We were all very excited. My Puerto Rican husband had to stay in New York for his job, awaiing a transfer to San Juan, seeing him only on the weekends. It was a new adjustment, but somehow, we were able to manage this new way of life.

My mornings started with a prayer and a meditaaon, walking on the beach.

Wow, what a change! Suddenly waking up at 5:00 AM was a joy and not a burden, and taking cold showers on the beach felt spiritual and not forced. We enjoyed our weekends on the beach, sur surrounded by our neighbors and their families. I have to say, I was overwhelmed by their welcoming and care.

My daughter was surrounded by people we just met, but everyone was always looking out for us, making sure we know everyone, making sure that I would have my water, drink, or join their BBQ on the beach. Coming from New York and New Jersey, this was a significant change. I had to readjust, sit back, and let this new reality of receiving to sink in. It’s funny when good things are around us, we have to step back and learn how to receive.

As we seeled in and started to feel more at home, we began to travel around the island and explore. I had a few days just for myself, so I decided to drive to the West Side. I heard the most amazing things about the sunsets and the views. I will never forget when I dr drove up the hill, and there it was, the expansive view of Rincón and the never-ending blue waters changing colors as the sun was coming down. It took my breath away. It was magical! Somehow, seeing God’s creaaon was emoonal.

I visited local stores, got some local fruits, and went to eat on the beach.

Watching surfers from the trunk of my car was a treat. I realized all these people around me live this full and rich life. They don’t compete who has a faster car, who has a bigger house, etc.

It It’s all about family, friends, geeng together, laughter, love for one another, and a good cold Medalla!

West Coast has a different energy. It’s more slow, more stay ssll, more enjoy the moment and more of no rush. I had to readjust that waiing for my salad might take an hour, and it is ok because you can just sit down and talk to other people around you. Live for the mome ment! I found so many people to talk to, and even made friends for life! Just like that!

One day, I visited Rincón with my family. We had so much leeover food, so we decided to reach out to this elderly man living on the beach. I saw he had chickens and dogs, so I asked if I can feed his animals. I received the friendliest smile and the nicest welcome. It became our stop every me we are in Rincón, and the joy of seeing each other became the sweetest blessing. Another day, we went to have our morning coffee on the beach, when we saw the local fisherman in their full glory pulling nets. We asked if we can help, and there it was, we were part of the locals pulling nets full of fish, feeling overwhelmed with such an experience!

We just purchased a house for our family in Rincón. When we arrive, we always receive the most cordial hello, and the warmest welcome from our new neighbors. I feel like I found my new home. My very own new paradise!

Puerto Rico taught me many things, but one of the most valuable lessons was “Love thy neighbor!” And I sure love all my neighbors from all around the island.

I never felt more accepted by these beauuful and welcoming people. I am truly blessed but mostly grateful to experience the full love of this amazing island of Puerto Rico! Namaste!

Mudarme a Puerto Rico fue un gran cambio para mí y mi familia. Cambiar de algo tan familiar a algo tan aventurero. ¡LA VIDA DE LA ISLA! Sacar a mi hija de su escuela en Nueva York y llevarla a una nueva escuela, nuevo hogar, nueva cultura, nueva comida, nuevo entorno, nu nuevas personas y un nuevo idioma.

Estábamos muy emocionados. Mi esposo, puertorriqueño, tuvo que quedarse en Nueva York por su trabajo, esperando un traslado a San Juan. Así que lo veíamos solo los fines de semana. Fue un cambio, pero de alguna manera pudimos maneja manejar esta nueva vida.

Mis mañanas comenzaban con una oración y una meditación, caminando por la playa. ¡Qué clase de cambio!

Despertar a las 5:00 de la mañana de pronto se volvió en una alegría y no una carga, y bañarme en el agua fría de la playa se sinnó espiritual y no forzado.

Disfrutamos nuestros fines de semana en la playa, rodeados de nuestros vecinos y sus familias. Debo decir que me senn abrumada por su bienvenida y atención. Mi hija estaba rodeada de gente que acabábamos de conocer, pero todos muy atentos y siempre cuidandonos, se aseguraban de que conociéramos a todos, de que yo tuviera mi agua, bebida o me uniera a su barbacoa en la playa. Viniendo de Nueva York y Nueva Jersey, este fue un cambio significaavo. Tuve que sentarme para reajustarme, y asimilar esta nueva realidad de recibir. Es gracioso que cuando hay cosas buenas a nuestro alrededor, tenemos que dar un paso atrás y aprender a recibir.

Cuando nos acostumbramos un poco y comenzamos a sennrnos más como en casa, comenzamos a viajar y explorar la isla. Tenía unos días solo para mí, así que decidí guiar hasta la costa oeste. Había escuchado acerca de los famosos atardeceres y sus asombrosas vistas. Nunca olvida olvidaré cuando guié al tope de la montaña, y allí estaba, la vista más hermosa de Rincón y las interminables aguas azules que cambiaban de color a medida que el sol se ponía. Me dejó sin aliento. ¡Fue mágico! De alguna manera, ver la creación de Dios fue emocionante.

Visité las endas, compré algunas frutas locales y fui a comer a la playa.

Ver a los surfistas desde el baúl de mi carro fue un placer. Me di cuenta de que todas estas personas a mi alrededor viven plenamente esta rica vida. No compiten quién ene el carro más rápido, quién ene la casa más grande, etc. ¡Se trata de familia, amigos, reunirse, reír, amar el uno al otro y una Medalla bien fría!

La costa oeste ene una energía diferente. Es más lento, más tranquilo, más disfrutar el momento y sin prisas.

Tuve que acostumbrarme que esperar por mi ensalada podría llevar una hora, y está bien porque enes la oportunidad de sentarte y hablar con otras personas a tu alrededor. ¡Vivir el momento! Encontré tanta gente con quien hablar, ¡e incluso hice amigos de por vida! ¡Así como si nada!

Un día visité Rincón con mi familia.

Teníamos comida de sobra, así que

decidimos acercarnos a este anciano que vive en la playa. Vi que tenía gallinas y perros, así que le pregunté si podía alimentar a sus animales. Recibí una sonrisa de oreja a oreja y la bienvenida más amigable. Se convirró en nuestra parada cada vez que visitabamos Rincón, y la alegría de vernos se convirró en la más dulce bendición. Otro día, fuimos a tomar nuestro café mañanero a la playa, cuando vimos a un pescador local rando redes en todo su esplendor. Preguntamos si podíamos ayudar, y así como si nada, ¡éramos parte de los locales rando redes llenas de peces, sinnéndonos emocionados por esta gran experiencia!

Acabamos de comprar una casa para nuestra familia en Rincón. Cuando llegamos, siempre somos recibidos con el más cordial saludo y la más cálida bienvenida de nuestros nuevos vecinos.

Siento que encontré mi nuevo hogar. ¡Mi propio paraíso! Puerto Rico me enseñó muchas cosas, pero una de las lecciones más valiosas fue "¡Ama a tu prójimo!" Y seguro que amo a todos mis vecinos y a toda la isla. Nunca me había senndo más parte de un lugar como aquí y por esta gente tan hermosa y acogedora. ¡Soy realmente bendecida, pero sob todo agradecida de experimentar sobre el amor total de esta increíble isla de Puerto Rico! ¡Namaste!
