About the gallery
“El Arte de lo imposible” comienza su andadura como galería el 18 de Junio del año 2007. Con una experiencia previa de diez años trabajando con artistas; enmarcando y vendiendo sus obras, escuchando sus inquietudes, nos decidimos a abrir un espacio comprometido, dinámico y pendiente de las nuevas tendencias. La galería está centrada en la búsqueda y promoción de jóvenes valores del arte más actual y contemporáneo, fijándose especialmente entre aquellos creadores que viven y trabajan en Asturias. Dándoles, en muchos casos, la primera oportunidad expositiva dentro del circuito de galerías comerciales. Pero no por ello descuidamos otro de nuestros objetivos; la presentación de interesantes creadores extranjeros y de otros nacionales que desarrollan su carrera lejos de Asturias. Desde su inauguración la galería ha organizado un gran número de eventos relacionados con el arte: Realizamos 12 exposiciones anuales con una duración aproximada de 30 días. Hemos colaborado en la Primera Noche Blanca organizada por el Principado de Asturias; también con el Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón, organizando, desde nuestro primer año de funcionamiento, actividades culturales paralelas al programa oficial. La “Semana Negra” o el “Optica Festival” son otros significativos eventos desarrollados en Gijón con los que la galería ha colaborado habitualmente. La proyección exterior, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, de los artistas que trabajan con nosotros, es uno de los objetivos prioritarios que “El Arte de lo imposible” se ha marcado desde su inauguración.
We started working as an art gallery on 18th June 2007. After ten years of experience working with artists, framing and selling their works, listening to their concerns, we finally decided to open a space that would be committed and dynamic, where full attention would be paid to new trends. The gallery is focussed in the search and promotion of gifted young people involved in the most modern and contemporary kind of art, paying special attention to those living and working in Asturias and often providing their first opportunity to show their creations in the commercial art network. Our aim is also to make known artists living all over Spain and even abroad. Since our opening, a great number of events related to art have been organized by the gallery: Twelve exhibitions are hold through the year, each one lasting around thirty days. We took part in the First White Night organised by the Principality of Asturias and, since the very beginning, we have also developed some events parallel to the official schedule of Gijón International Film Festival. We have often collaborated with some of the most remarkable events of Gijón’s cultural life, such as ‘Semana Negra’ or ‘Optica Festival’. Promotion of our artists, both inside and outside our borders, has become our top priority ever since El Arte de lo Imposible was inaugurated.

Nano Méndez Esculturas En mi vida laboral, siempre me ha interesado el conocimiento y el uso de las distintas herramientas y materiales. Como me ha tocado trabajar en varios campos, he podido ir descontextualizándolos poco a poco para aplicarlos de una manera creativa en mi obra. Quizás si hubiese tenido una situación económica más cómoda, habría creado con materiales nuevos (lámparas, sillas, esculturas, etc). Pero como la necesidad agudiza el ingenio, se me ocurrió que podía introducirme en el mundo del reciclaje, dándole un nuevo valor a las cosas usadas. Reciclo principalmente muebles y esculturas. En los muebles me gusta jugar al engaño, pretendiendo que pase desapercibido el material reciclado, buscando que se tarde lo más posible en reconocer el material “basura” que estoy utilizando. Con las esculturas de cucharas, todo surgió un día tratando de recordar mi infancia cuando mi madre me decía que venía un avión hacia mi boca, y yo sólo veía un trozo de metal con un pastiche que tenía que esquivar porque no me gustaba. Fue entonces cuando empecé a darme cuenta que una cuchara podía ser un avión, un barco, un pez, un corazón y pronto llegaron los tenedores y el resto de los utensilios de la cocina apoyando la misma idea.

Mi incursión en el mundo del Arte es muy reciente, comienzo en el 2008 con participaciones en el “Festival de Reciclaje Drap’Art” (Centro de Cultura Contemporáneo de Barcelona CCCB) y en el “Lab-Shop” (Centro de Arte Laboral Gijón).

Nano Méndez Sculptures In my professional life I have always been interested in learning about the different tools and materials that I have had to work with. Working in several different fields has afforded me the opportunity to gradually decontextualize these tools and materials, and find ways to use them creatively in my own artwork. If I had been better off economically from the start, I would have worked with new materials (lamps, chairs, sculptures, etc.). However, since necessity is the mother of invention, I got involved in the world of recycling, and began to give a new life to second-hand objects. The main things I make with recycled material are furniture and sculptures. For the furniture, I like to fool the eye by making the recycled material go unnoticed, so that it takes people as long as possible to realize that the materials I am using are actually “rubbish”.

As for the spoon sculptures, the idea came to me one day as I remembered how, when my mother used to say, “Open wide for the airplane!” to feed me, all I ever saw was a piece of metal coming at me with an unappetizing glob of food on it. Suddenly it dawned on me that a spoon could become an airplane, a ship, a fish, a heart, or anything else; forks and other cooking utensils were soon to follow. I only recently made my debut in the art world, in 2008, with the Centro de Arte de la Laboral’s “Festival de Reciclaje” and “Lab-Shop”, in Gijón, and the Centro de Cultura Contemporáneo de Barcelona’s “Festival de Reciclaje Drap’Art”.

Rodrigo Martín (Langreo, Asturias, España. 1986) Artista plástico que centra su trabajo pictórico en la búsqueda continua de lo “esencial”, dando mayor importancia al carácter simbólico de la propia pintura que a la representación que se lleva a cabo por medio de su utilización. Licenciado en Bellas Arte por la Universidad del País Vasco, en 2010 cursa un Máster de Creación Artística : Realismo y Entornos en la Universidad de Barcelona. Actualmente desarrolla su proyecto de tesis en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, tratando el tema de la pintura abstracta en la España de los años 50. Pintor de gran proyección, su obra a sido merecedora de varios reconocimientos entre los que podemos destacar; en el año 2011, Selección Premio Aedal de pintura (Valencia) y en el 2010 Accésit en el Certamen Art Nalón (Asturias), Selección en XV Mostra d´art Jove d´Horta-Guinardó o Premio StripArt ´10 (Barcelona).

Colectivas también a destacar como son Colectiva Verano en la Galería Octógono (Asturias), Estrenos de Arte en la Pinacoteca Eduardo Úrculo (Asturias) en 2011 o Influencias, Confluencias y Posicionaments ´10 en las galerías Graciaarts Project y Carmen Espinet respectivamente durante el año 2010.

Rodrigo Martín (Langreo, Asturias, Spain. 1986) Artist who focuses his pictorial work in the continuing search for the “essential”, giving greater importance to the symbolic nature of painting itself that the representation is carried out through use. Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country in 2010 pursuing a Master of Artistic Creation: Realism and environments at the University of Barcelona. Currently developing his thesis project at the University Complutense of Madrid, addressing the issue of abstract painting in Spain during the 50’s.

Gijón’s art scene
Gijón es una ciudad del norte de España, situada al borde del Cantábrico, un mar bronco y de luz cambiante. Gijón es una ciudad habitable, crítica y proactiva que modula sus días con la lentitud y la calma de las ciudades de provincia. En ella viven 275.000 personas y forma parte de una región, Asturias, con un millón de habitantes. Desde el siglo XIX ha sido una ciudad con un fuerte carácter industrial y comercial, que hoy ha tenido que diversificar su economía, atenta a cuanto sucede en su entorno y especialmente permeable a iniciativas y tendencias venidas de otros lugares. Gijón ha sido y es tierra de artistas comprometidos con su tiempo.
Gijón is a city in the north of Spain, on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, a rough sea with ever-changing light. Gijón is a liveable city, one which is critical and proactive, but whose days are softened by provincial cities’ calmer, slower pace. It has 275,000 inhabitants and is located in a region (Asturias) that has a total of 1,000,000 inhabitants. Since the 19th century it has been characterised by industry and commerce, though in recent times it has had to diversify its economy. It is a city that is aware of the world around it, and is particularly open to initiatives and trends coming from elsewhere. Gijón has been and continues to be home to artists who are committed to the issues of their time.
Hasta los años treinta del pasado siglo las actividades artísticas estuvieron ligadas a las sedes sociales del Club de Regatas, lugar de encuentro de la burguesía local y del Ateneo Obrero, lugar de aprendizaje y ocio de la clase obrera e industrial. Durante la Guerra Civil española del año de 1936-39, se mantuvo la actividad artística en las cárceles y en 1937, los artistas vinculados al franquismo realizaron su primera exposición de obras enmarcadas dentro del arte propagandístico y militante de su época sujeta a los postulados conservadores que dictaban los nuevos tiempos. En el marco de la dictadura continuó el intento por dinamizar la encorsetada vida cultural y se iniciaron tímidos programas de apoyo a los artistas, la apertura de algunas galerías que ocuparon el centro comercial de la ciudad (llegaron
Up until the 1930s the city’s artistic activity was tied to two cultural associations: the Club de Regatas (Yachting Club), which was the meeting place of the local bourgeoisie, and the Ateneo Obrero (Workers’ Atheneum), which was the working and industrial class’s centre for learning and leisure. During the Spanish Civil War, from 1936-39, artists continued to be active in the jails, and in 1937 artists with connections to the Franco movement held their first exhibition. The work reflected the period’s wider trends in propagandistic and political art, and was subject to the conservative beliefs called for by the new period. En las décadas de los años cincuenta y sesenta se estabilizaron las programaciones anuales y la dedicación de espacios públicos y privados dedicados a la presentación de los trabajos de artistas. Así, con el paso de los años, quedó establecida lo que sería la oferta artística promovida por la iniciativa pública y privada, a través de un conjunto de locales de exposiciones comerciales y del Ateneo Jovellanos de modo que en los años setenta la ciudad llegó a contar con una activa presencia de artistas críticos con el régimen, imbuidos por las corrientes artísticas contemporáneas que hacían de su trabajo una forma de militancia política. Y espacios de encuentros informales y tertulias como El Sotanín, convivían con un conjunto de doce galerías comerciales: Altamira, Atalaya, Tantra, Labra, Tioda… que en su mayoría mantenían una actividad cultural y comercial permanente, y cuatro salas de arte institucionales: el Ateneo Jovellanos, la Caja de Ahorros, el museo Casa natal de Jovellanos y la sala Nicanor Piñole. These institutions, such as the Real Instituto de Jovellanos, held exhibitions of art by local, regional and national artists, along with contests for new artists and collective shows like the Christmas Salon and the Winter Salon, in which the work of artists old and new was displayed side by side. In the post-war years, Gijón became the centre of artistic activity in Asturias. In the 1950s and ‹60s the city’s annual cultural programming took root, along with the tradition of using public buildings for the display of artwork. In this way, the city’s public and privately sponsored artistic infrastructure was slowly established, through the efforts of both the commercial galleries and the Ateneo Jovellanos. By the 1970s the city had become home to an active movement of artists who, ibued with contemporary trends in art, were critical of the regime, and made their work into a form of political activism. By this time there were also spaces for informal gatherings and discussion groups, like El Sotanín, in addition to a total of twelve commercial galleries: Altamira, Atalaya, Tantra, Labra, Tioda and more, who were for the most part stable participants in Gijón’s cultural and business life. Four institutional galleries were also created: the Ateneo Jovellanos, the Caja de Ahorros (Savings Bank) Gallery, the Casa Natal de Jovellanos Museum and the Nicanor Piñole Gallery. Tras el final de la dictadura la vida cultural de la ciudad en los años 80 es similar a la del resto del estado. Son años de efervescencia enmarcadas en un contexto nacional e internacional lleno de vitalidad. España anhela integrarse en el mundo internacional y promueve la producción, promoción, difusión y el intercambio de artistas y creadores desde la iniciativa pública y privada.
In the 1980s, following the end of the dictatorship, the cultural life of Gijón was comparable to that of the rest of the country. They were years full of activity, during a period that was highly dynamic both in Spain and abroad. As Spain was anxious to participate on the international field, there were efforts from both the public and private sectors to promote artists, and offer aid for projects and exchanges.
En 1982 se crea la FMC (Fundación Municipal de Cultura), que participa activamente a través de la sala de exposiciones Nicanor Piñole y del museo casa natal de Jovellanos del proceso de dinamización y promoción de la creación artística local, nacional e internacional con importantes exposiciones desarrolladas en colaboración con museos e instituciones internacionales. A Gijón llegó el trabajo de artistas como Lewis Hine, Robert Mapplethorpe, John Gutmann, Joan Miró, Picasso, Joel Peter Witkin… Gijón en los últimos treinta años revela su deseo de crear estructuras democráticas estables para integrarse de una manera efectiva en el mundo de la creación actual.

In 1982 the FMC (Municipal Culture Foundation) was founded, and it continues to actively support and promote local, national and international artists’ work through the Nicanor Piñole Gallery and the Casa Natal de Jovellanos Museum, where it works in collaboration with international museums and institutions to create world-class exhibitions. Some of the renowned artists whose work has been shown in Gijón are Lewis Hine, Robert Mapplethorpe, John Gutmann, Joan Miró, Picasso, and Joel-Peter Witkin. Over the last thirty years Gijón has demonstrated its will to create stable democratic structures which enable it to effectively participate in today’s art world. During this period both the public and private sectors have had an enormous presence in the city. En 1998 cuatro galeristas crearon la Asociación Profesional de Galerías de arte contemporáneo del principado de Asturias, en 2007 incrementa el número de sus asociados y el panorama artístico institucional se refuerza con la inauguración de Laboral centro de arte y creación industrial, lugar de producción desde el que se ponen en marcha un gran número de proyectos de arte ligados a la cultura visual y a las nuevas tecnologías, de vocación internacional y que ha aportado un enorme valor añadido a las estructuras existentes.
Museums, along with other centres such as the Centro Cultural Antiguo Instituto (1995), housed in the Real Instituto Jovellanos building, the Centro Internacional de Arte Palacio Revillagigedo (1991), the Sala de Arte Astragal, Laboral Ciudad de Cultura, and Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial (2007). Since the 1980s, several new spaces have joined the ranks of the city’s older galleries, namely Cornión (1981), Durero (1985), Espacio Líquido (2001), ATM Contemporary/Galería Altamira (1958/2010), Gema Llamazares Galería de Arte (2005), El Arte de lo Imposible (2007) and Galería Adriana Suárez (2010), to make a total of twelve spaces. In 1998 four gallery owners founded the Contemporary Art Gallery Professional Association of Asturias, which opened up to new members in 2007. Another important milestone was the opening of the Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial at the historical Universidad Laboral campus.This internationally oriented centre, which promotes a wide array of artistic projects related to visual culture and new technologies, has been a boon to the city’s art scene, and has added a great amount of value to the Universidad Laboral complex.

Las líneas estratégicas de trabajo del sector público han tenido como objetivo el apoyo financiero a la realización de proyectos artísticos, a la formación especializada en centros nacionales e internacionales, talleres y seminarios. La realización de exposiciones que ayuden a la difusión de artistas y proyectos, a la presencia en ferias de arte, y a la promoción de nuestros artistas mediante intercambios.
The strategic aims of the public sector have been, on the one hand, to offer financial support for artists to develop specific projects, as well as continue their education through workshops, seminars and programs at educational institutions in Spain and abroad. On the other hand, they have supported exhibitions aimed at making artists and their projects known, helped groups and galleries attend art fairs, and promoted Gijón’s artists through exchanges.
La programación de exposiciones ha sido y es ecléctica, primando el criterio de calidad. Y en los espacios institucionales tienen cabida tanto las revisiones de carácter histórico como la presentación de arte actual y nuevas formas creación de artistas emergentes.
The exhibitions on view in the city are always eclectic, though quality is a guiding principle across the board. For their part, the institutional spaces host both historically oriented exhibitions, as well as current artwork, new media and emerging artists.

La ciudad es el espacio con y sobre el que se trabaja para abordar su interpretación y ha estado en el origen de proyectos de carácter social y de arte público. Sus galerías de arte son hoy un valor insustituible de su trama cultural.
The city of Gijón is a space to work in, a space to think of and to imagine, and, importantly, a space out of which important social and public art projects have sprung. And today more than ever its art galleries are an irreplaceable part of this rich cultural makeup.
