study of form and function The Pavilion Model was the introductory modeling project in my design courses. The concepts of form and function within a space were explored and challenged.
This model was originally
constructed in cardboard and later modeled in sketchup. Here repetition and rotation are the main ideas. Ultimately, the aim was to form a creative sculptural piece to be viewed from every angle, each different and intriguing.

Reception Desk and Feature Wall
The Lobby Atrium is a small corporate office building for a company called Metamorphosis. The concept for the project was to pick an inspiration photograph and build the design around it. The three main focal spaces for the design are the feature wall of insect wings in LED lighting, the staircase and the reception desk. The company specializes in rebuilding failing businesses and morphing them into successful businesses. The idea of positive change is portrayed through the butterfly icons around the office along with organic shapes and a cool color pallet.

Coffee Works uses only organic coffees grown by small scale family farmers and roasts their beans in house in a natural, Eco-friendly manner. Taking into consideration the values and principles Coffee Works holds dear to their business, the new design, color scheme, and style translates into a fresh, new, Eco-conscience design. The new de-

Medical Office Building
Greenpark medical office iii
>>>>
The Greenpark Medical Office building is located in Houston, Texas and is the site for this healthcare design. The design challenge was to design a new office layout for a potential doctor looking to renovate their office. A large portion of the project focused on space planning. It was important to me to design the office with access immediately off the elevators for easy way finding. Separation of public and private space was also a large factor in the design of the medical office. The concept for this project was to design a welcoming and inviting office. Doctor’s offices have a tendency to be connected to unpleasant experiences. This design solution aims to create a safe environment for patients to have a positive visit. A cool color palette is used with a lot of textured materials to sooth and please the eye. Elements from nature are used in the form of 3Form panels to add to the calming and inviting atmosphere. This project showcases Steelcase furniture systems along with custom casework such as the nurse’s station and reception desk.

The Sacramento Museum
>>>>
The Sacramento Museum is a unique museum concept attached to the Sacramento Amtrak Station. The concept for the museum is to serve as a preview for all other museums in Sacramento. Patrons traveling by train can stop into the museum to take a look at what the city has to offer and enjoy their time waiting for their connecting train. The museum showcases exhibits from the Sacramento Automobile Museum, the Sacramento Train Museum, The California Museum, The Children’s Museum, and The Crocker. Color plays a large role by creating separate spaces within the museum to produce a unique atmosphere for each exhibit. The walls along the perimeter are a neutral gray to paint a blank canvas. Pops of bright, fun colors are used on accent walls in the different exhibit spaces to highlight each exhibit to its fullest and create the desired atmosphere. The psychology of color was researched to decide which colors to pick. Yellow is connected to feelings happiness, green symbolizes nature, blue is relaxing, and orange radiates energy. Principles of universal design is a focus for the project. The entire museum is accessible to people of all abilities. Signage height, clearances and exhibit displays were given extra attention to allow anyone who visits the ability to participate fully.

TECH CONNECT
>>>>
The concept for the SFO airport lounge is to create a mobile work office for traveling business people. Unlike a membership only business class lounge, this lounge will be available for anyone to use for an hourly or monthly rate. The front of the space including the retail and eat-in area is public and anyone may enter for no fee. More people are trying to get work done on layovers and during time between connecting flights, but the main seating areas in airports are not suitable for working efficiently. The private lounge area aims to address these issues. Several different combinations of workstations and lounge seating give options for a person’s preference and each spot has power and data hookups through a raised floor. Since people using this lounge will most likely be waiting for a connecting flight, the design strategy arose from the idea of connections and played a large role in the design of the storefront. The name for the lounge combines the idea of connections and how the rapid technology wave connects business people today. Research shows that people dislike the lack of privacy in airports thus furniture that provides visual separation and a feeling of enclosure was selected. For example, Naught One has their Hush and Busby line that has sides that visually block one person from the next. The Herman Miller chairs and stools in the eat-in area play off the connectivity concept.

The challenge presented for the 1124 R Street residential development in Sacramento is that the current state of housing in California is not accommodating the needs of the masses. The traditional nuclear family household is not the majority anymore and people are looking for alternative housing to suit their needs. According to PEW Research Center, nearly 57 million Americans live in a multi-generational household. After the economic recession in 2007-2009 it became difficult for young adults to support themselves and began moving back in with family after college. Also, California has a high population for Hispanic and Asian families. Culturally, Hispanic and Asian families often live with grandparents and extended family. The California Census Bureau reported that in the neighborhood of 1124 R Street 48% of the population does not live in the traditional nuclear household and the neighborhood is predominately Asian. For these reasons the 1124 R Street residential development in Sacramento is the site for a multi-generational housing development.
