n May 16, the Alma Action Committee held a community meeting to ur ge the city of San Jose to keep the Alma Center open. The center has been fighting to stay open after two consecutive years of uncertainty. For over 40 years the Alma Center has thrived on volunteers who make the center a second home for most of its senior population and its youth. The center is said to bring joy and a sense of community to the Washington Neighborhood.

“I hav e a good time at the center ,” said Teodoro Solis. “I also deserve a safe place fo r a meal, but I r eally deserve a community center I can be proud of.” The San Jose P arks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is proposing the re-use or closure of the center to offset the city’s budget deficit. The center asked the City council and Mayor Reed to support the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits’ proposal to allocate an additional $400,000 for two y ear services particularly for

seniors. During a research process done by the Alma Action Committee, the members attended and reviewed a senior nutrition program and task force meetings; spoke with representatives of the Office of Aging, County of Santa Clar a, and spoke with City councilmembers and the Vice Mayor of San Jose. “As y ou c ontinue t o f ight, w e’ll f ight w ith you,” said councilmember Sam Liccardo. Each and every day the v olunteers work to preserve and strengthen the center that keeps

over 100 youths off the str eets. The center also provides a hot meal daily to an av erage of 200 seniors who are local homeowners, retired workers, local allies, and community leaders. For many, the lunch provided by the center is the seniors only meal of the day. Some divide the lunch into two portions to avoid hunger in the evening hours. For others, especially those living alone, the center provides much needed socialization activities like bingo, loteria, and field trips. “When my husband died I thought that was it for me, but when I started going to center I realized I had to enjo y life,” said Angela Mor eno. “The people are beautiful and I don’t feel alone.” For most, the center fills a void that deceased spouses may leave. While to others, it provides a day of purpose or a safe place to do homework. Based u pon t heir s tudy, t he c enter i s i n search of stability with two main proposals. At this time they are requesting that the center hire one full time staff member and request a coordinated evaluation. As a result of the meeting, Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen made it clear that the center will remain open in the next fis cal y ear. She will continue to work on a budget that keeps the center open which signifies a major leap towards the center’s stability. ∆

O

n Monday, May 16, 2011, I r eceived a c all f rom a l ady w ho identified herself and then took steps to verify that I was ‘Hilbert Morales”, a r egistered v oter. What follo wed was a very carefully worded request to pledge ‘a substantial contribution’ to ensure the reelection of President Obama. The commentary I am about to provide you also applies to those of y ou who r eceive phone solicitations for donations to the election of any candidate. I chose to engage the soliciting party in a conversation that brought up the following issues. I suggest that you do the same because L atino c ontributors m ust s tate what needs to be done for Latino communities, and request that your personal priorities be relayed up to their supervisors. In effect, what is being suggested is to not commit to any contribution without first expressing those concerns which ar e of high priority to you and your community. For e xample, The D REAM l egislation needs to pass this y ear to enable Latino undocumented students, brought here by migrating parents as ‘b abes in arms’, to continue their education and pr eparation to become qualified professional citizens. My expressed concerns w ere the following: First, I was disappointed that no use w as m ade o f t he ‘ Unsecured M iniGrant Loans” concept at all. What was approved ab out one y ear ago was ‘ small business lo ans’ thr ough banks whose loans were guaranteed by the Small Business Administration, Department of Commerce. Such SBA loans r equired that the firm show a profit during the past two or three fiscal years. As a consequence of the very high unemployment rate in Hispanic communities, many Hispanic o wned and operated small businesses could not demonstrate pr ofitability. They could demonstrate the fact that their survival as a business occurred. The outcome was not receiving any SBA insured loan because of the inability to demonstr ate profitabillity. What is not being consider ed in curr ent public policy is the fact that it is in small entrepreneurial businesses that innovation occurs and new jobs are created. A second concern was, that while Wall Street financial groups and the auto industry r eceived ‘bail-out funds’, nothing of that sort was provided to the small busi-

ness community. This is very important to state because those large ‘bail-out funds’ never trickled down to our community at all. That money would have trickled up had small businesses received ‘unsecured mini grants’ because additional emplo yees would be spending their salaries making the us ual a nd c ustomary p ayments fo r mortgages, food, clothing, educations, etc. Today, the banking industry is still not willing to provide credit to small businesses. A third concern is the need for the Office of Consumer Affairs at the White House to assertively modify mortgages. As contracts to ‘buy a home’, mortgages currently protect the banks, brokers, and real estate agents while pr oviding no contingency provisions which enable the ‘home buyer’ to make r equired tr ansitional adjustments. F or example, if the family’ s monthly income falls thr ough no fault of the employed family members, the home buyer needs to be able to continue to service the mor tgage by payments of inter est only (without reduction of principal owed) to enable the family to stay in their homes. And if a large amount of ‘home equity’ has been built up, to use that to enable staying ‘in their home’. Currently, home purchasers have no right to ‘mortgage modification or renegotiation’. It is unr easonable to project a reliable income over a 15 or 30 y ear mortgage agr eement these days. If the wage earner loses emplo yment because the job was outsourced overseas, at least two years needs to be provided for re-training and re-employment. These adjustment contingencies simply do not exist in current mor tgages with the outcome that some home-owners lost their ‘life-savings’ through no fault of their own. My point i s that Latinos need not pledge any contribution without first saying what their personal concerns and pri orities are today. These are having a high quality education and training for our children; jobs and a better economy; and some evidence that a career ladder is available to us all. Government and financial institutions have no problem telling us what their terms ar e. Latinos need to pr actice telling the establishment what their per sonal and community priorities and concerns are. So do communicate assertively. Pledge your political campaign contributions as you may, but state as par t of that pledge your priorities and conditions.∆

P

“Quiero agradecer a mis seguidores.

Most Americans unaware of gout risk factors

(ARA) ost A mericans need to kno w more a bout t he risk factors for gout, according to the findings of a new consumer s urvey. G out, sometimes ca lled g outy arthritis, i s c hronic a nd

M

painful. If left untreated, it can become disabling. It no w affects an estimated 8.3 million Americans. While 59 percent of Americans know that gout is a lifelong d isease, m ost a dults don’t kno w what can put them - or their family mem-

bers - at risk, accor ding to a national survey conducted by the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES). Gout is part of the arthritis family and in fact is the most common form of inflammatory ar thritis. The telltale sign of a gout attack is usu ally sudden and often debilitating pain, most frequently felt in the lar ge joint of the big toe. A flare up can hurt so much that i t may require a trip to the emer gency room for relief. The culprit is a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints caused by too much uric acid in the body. Everyone has uri c acid in their body . It’ s natur ally present in small amounts, but when someone has an abnormally high level, it can trigger a gout attack. Americans don ’t hav e a good picture of other health conditions that can incr ease their r isk, a ccording t o t he survey. Here’s how Americans fared when their k nowledge of risk f actors for gout was

put to the test: * Only 1 in 10 Americans correctly cited cardiovascular disease as a risk factor for gout. * J ust 1 i n 3 A mericans correctly r eported that obesity is a risk factor. * One in 5 Americans knows that diabetes and kidney disease are also risk factors. * A mere 1 in 5 Americans made the connection that family history can put you at risk. “It’s important to know if you may be at risk,” says Dr . Brian Mandell, chairman of medicine a nd a s enior s taff member i n Rh eumatology and Immunologic Diseases in the Center for Vasculitis Care and Research at the Cleveland Clinic, and G UAES boar d member. “The survey findings concern me because gout is associated with all of these other se rious h ealth c onditions that are also on the rise.

Knowledge is power, and like many other diseases, early diagnosis and tr eatment is key.” Other risk factors for gout With certain exceptions, gout develops in people age 45 or older . It affects men more than women. Once a woman is post menopausal, though, her risk is nearly the same as it is for m en of her age. Here are some of the other risk factors to be aware of: * Untr eated high blood pressure * High cholesterol * O besity - s omeone obese i s fo ur t imes m ore likely to develop gout * Cr ash diets which can increase t he a mount o f u ric acid in the body * A high-fructose diet, including sweetened soft drinks * Excessive consumption of alcohol, especially beer * Joint injury * K idney d isease, w hich can c ome f rom h igh b lood

pressure or diabetes * Use of cer tain medicines, especially diuretics or water pills * Some anti-r ejection medications u sed i n t ransplant patients While there’s no cur e for gout, a combination of medication and lifestyle modifications may help those diagnosed manage the disease, helping them to maintain their active lifestyle. For more information about risk factors for gout, talk to your doctor and visit www.GoutEducation.org. The website was developed by GUAES, a nonprofit group of health care professionals who educate the public and the health care community about gout and the related health care consequences of hyperuricemia. It offers free educational resources for patients and family members who may be at risk.
