County Proclaims March as Women’s

History Month

S

ANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. The County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors proclaimed March as Women’s History Month. The commemoration acknowledges the multiple contributions of women regardless of their age, race, class, ethnic, or educational background. In this proclamation, the Board acknowledged that throughout history women not only have contributed to securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also were part of the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and the peace movement, to create a fair and just society for all. The proclamation by the Board of Supervisors reiterates the role that women have played in economic, cultural, and social arenas, from becoming leaders in the forefront of major progressive social change movements, to constituting a significant portion of the labor force, and charitable, philanthropic and cultural institutions. Women by the Numbers As of October 1, 2009, there were 155.8 million women in the United States. There were 82.8 million mothers of all ages in the United States. In 2008, the median annual earnings of women 15 and older who worked year-round, full time was $35. Women earned 77 cents for every $1 earned by men. 29.4 percent of women 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher education in 2008. 55 percent of college students in fall 2008 were women. There were 6.5 million womenowned businesses in 2002, generating more than 939 billion in revenue. he U.S. Census Bureau released in March 8th more detailed 2010 Census population totals and demographic characteristics to the governor and leadership of the state legislature in California. This data provides the first look at population counts for small areas and race, Hispanic origin, voting age and housing unit data released from the 2010 Census. The official 2010 Census Redistricting Data Summary File can be used to redraw federal, state and local legislative districts under Public Law 94-171. The census data is used by state officials to realign congressional and state legislative districts in their states, taking into account population shifts since the 2000 Census. he time is coming when those who tend to keep silent will explode with frustration. None of us understand why gasoline prices are rising towards $4.00 per gallon and above when the Suez Canal was never closed to shipping and Libya is responsible for only 2% of the total global crude oil production. Multinational corporations and Wall Street firms are using these anxieties to push costs up. This includes pushing up the amount of money Saudi Arabia and other OPEC regimes receive. Recall that some gets to terrorist organizations. It is a disappointment that a comprehensive American energy policy has not been fully developed and funded by the U.S. Congress. Why is that the present case? Have ‘Big Oil” lobbyists been by with their influence and money? For the good of all, America must become fully independent of foreign energy sources, especially crude oil. It is very likely that “Big Oil” is working its lobbyists overtime to ensure that a comprehensive energy program never happens. This is very short sighted because with their recent profit levels the private funding of all the alternative energy research efforts could be done by “Big Oil”. When America becomes fully independent of foreign crude oil as an energy source, then it would become more stable as an independent world power and economy. The recent civil unrest in the Mid-East (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, etc.) has its origins with “Big Oil” corporations whose contracts exist in those areas and have been the “American national interests” there. These contracts were made with dictators and royal families who rule their peoples with an eye to retaining their power and authority. American interests in these areas is really the outcome of the past and present dealings with these national Arab leaders. Today, two of the three dictators have been deposed as a result of the uprising of their ordinary peoples. Today, civil unrest is the result of underemployment and a disregard for the well-being of their residents. The information technology (especially Facebook) now available to their natives have made it impossible to continue to maintain present governing powers because much of what has been told to their populations can now be verified as being truthful or propaganda. Note that “antiAmerican” and “Anti-Israeli” slogans were

not used the leaders of these civil movements. In America, the people are beginning to realize that since 1975 the middle class’s income has remained stagnant. During this same time period, the top 5% became very wealthy and influential. What is needed in America is an adjustment to tax policy that requires the very wealthy to pay their fair share of government expenses. This sector of the American scene must permit the redistribution of wealth (money) to permit the low income and middle class to have the money required to maintain American living standard expectations. Recent analysis reveals that if the top 5% had paid their fair share of taxes during the past 10 years, the federal deficit would be manageable; states, counties, cities and other jurisdictions (like school districts) would not be facing today’s horrific deficits. How can the very wealthy justify having the low tax rate? How can the corporate leaders justify their large profits attained while expanding the use of cheap non-union offshore labor to produce the goods that are sold here in America? Doesn’t anyone realize that without employment which provides a living wage, the American consumer economy dies? Evidence that this is happening is all around us. Just look at the increase in the numbers of children who are now growing up while experiencing family poverty levels which exceed those of the 1930’s Great Depression. These poor kids of impoverished families now exceed 25 million! The problem is corporate greed focused only on profits. The Obama administration must begin to tell the American people the truth about the disparity of power and influence amassed by the top 5% of this nation who are not paying their fair share of taxes. And to develop jobs in America they want continued subsidies and entitlements. Democratic Party leaders must begin to tell their constituents the reality and importance of this power struggle. If the Republican strategy succeeds, 95 of 100 of us will be poor and destitute. Without needed tax revenues government cannot sustain essential social and health care services. The unemployed millions will become frustrated. That leads to civil unrest, just like the Middle East. Let’s all face truth and reality.∆

Veteran Ray Orozco’s 87th Birthday Party

T

his past Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Palo Alto Veteran’s Hospital an unusual birthday party was held honoring U.S. Air Force veteran Ray Orozco. This event was organized by Debbie Orozco, his daughter and Rock A. Orozco, his son, who is currently employed by Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VBA), Honolulu Regional Office, where he is the coordinator of their Homeless Veteran’s Program.

feated the Nazi Germany. Ray’s personal military experiences included some 20 bombing raids, being captured and enduring the prison-of-war camps Nazi Germany had set up in Yugoslavia. After General Patton’s Third Army forces liberated the stalag detaining Ray Orozco, he volunteered to stay to cook for and care for the Jewish survivors of local ‘extermination’ camps. During the Vietnam Conflict, Ray again volunteered to serve his country with distinction and honor. During Orozco’s military service,

area. A few came from as far away as Sacramento and Los Angeles. At least three generations were present. All seem to be contributors to this community. Note that the sons and daughters have now married and have children (Ray‘s grandchildren). All communicate using the English language and many retained their ability to speak some Spanish. This is direct evidence of the acculturation and assimilation, which Ray and I talked about back in 1986 when I first acquired ownership of EL OBSERVADOR. In fact, Ray was someone who invested $1,000 to EO’s capital funds. The objective was to have a publication that was owned and operated by Hispanics for the purpose of fairly and accurately reporting the full participation of the local Hispanic community in society, business and government. The group shared food, beverages, and cake after all sang “Happy Birthday” songs in both Spanish and English. This was the nostalgic part of this joyous event. Many who attended were former community activists and leaders during an era when no Hispanic elected official existed. The following is a partial list of family, friends, and neighbors who attended the birthday party: Dolores Webb (sister), Margo Cagullini, Mary Helen

...Ray and I talked back in 1986 when I first acquired ownership of EL OBSERVADOR. In fact, Ray was someone who invested $1,000 to EO’s capital funds. Orozco‘s 87th birthday celebration attracted about 75 individuals. I began collecting names of some of those who attended when it was obvious that this was becoming an unusual event honoring an individual whose persona represented the very best of the Mexican-American community. Mainstream media does not often record nor report those whose selfless personal contributions have served this unique and inclusively diverse American nation. The Orozco family lived in Watsonville, CA when World War II occurred. Ray and his high school buddies were drafted and trained to be the soldiers who de-

Ray was awarded 18 medals including the Bronze Star medal for heroism and bravery. After being discharged honorably, Ray Orozco worked at Lockheed doing security work requiring very high security clearances. He and several associates, one of whom was Frank Garcia (a pharmacist, Garcia’s Pharmacy, San Jose), operated La Fiesta Latina Dance Hall where many weddings and quinceaneras were celebrated. Ray was an excellent ballroom dancer who taught many various dances. The perspective presented here will be an incomplete record of Ray Orozco’s extended family and friends who are living in this

and Val de Leon, Valentino and Ursula de Leon, Hank Cisneros, Mary Ellen Esparza, Katie and Luise Salsis, Joe and Maria Alvarado, Connie and Ralph Aldama, Pam and Ed Ratiaglia (Angie Churchill’s daughter), Tom and Caroline Adams, Brianne and Jason Stargione, Ruby and Jeffrey Orozco, John Orozco, Pete Orozco, Ric Abeytia, Honey and Jordan Perigio-See, Billie and Fred Contreras, Mrs. Carmen Merino, Ron and Ruth Merino, Mark Merino, Gus and Alicia Mendecke. Also attending were Betty and Hilbert Morales, publishers, El Observador. These 37 individuals are only a partial listing because many individuals

who talked to me assumed that after all these years I would still recall their names correctly. The names of grandchildren present and other youths are also not listed here. An effort will be made to get the full list of all who attended from Debbie Orozco. Several who attended had traveled from Sacramento, Los Angeles, Salinas, Watsonville, and Honolulu, Hawaii. It was a joyful gathering of the extended family and friends of Ray Orozco that was quite impressive. The main purpose of this gathering was to ‘raise the spirits’ of Ray Orozco who is loved and adored by his extended family. Ray will undergo additional surgery. One of his legs was amputated some years ago. Now the

other leg has developed gangrene from poor circulation, a chronic diabetes outcome. Ray Orozco wants to keep on keeping on. He said, “I do not know how far I can go, but I am going to go (live) as long as I can.” It is this drive to live life in full that has been a trait of Ray Orozco. About 10 current members of the Kiwanis, Pueblo de San Jose club are listed above and attended this event to pay their respects to Ray. Ron Merino and Tino De Leon, the Kiwanis club president, were pleased with the turnout by their members. Finally, the Orozco extended family is representative of many Hispanic families who have deep roots in the American society. Hopefully, some day soon, soci-

ologists will study and reveal the extent of the contributions made by such families to the greater American society. What was witnessed here is an example of cohesiveness of many such families in America today whose origins are truly Hispanic and are evidence of the positive side of that culture. NOTE: If anyone has an anecdote to contribute, a name to add, or a correction to make, please sent it to hmorales@el-observador.com. There was so much going on at this gathering that I am certain that errors and omissions occurred. My regrets about them, however when informed, additions and corrections shall be made.

More Years Needed to Close Gender Wage Gap in the U.S.

W

ASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--New research from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) shows that it will take until 2056 for women and men’s earnings to reach pay parity—if the wage gap continues to close at the same pace it has for the last fifty years. On March 8, 2011, the hundredth anniversary of International Women’s Day, women have made great gains in terms of education and employment, but the gender wage gap continues to reflect women’s lower earnings compared with men. “The labor market has changed dramatically during the last few decades,” said Heidi Hartmann, President of IWPR. “Women’s labor force participation has shot up and women are receiving college degrees and graduate degrees at faster rates than men, yet the gender wage gap is improving very slowly.” Overall, the ratio of women’s to men's annual median earnings remained flat at 77 percent in both 2008 and 2009, after achieving an all-time peak of 78 percent in 2007. In 1961, on the fiftieth anniversary of International Women’s Day, the gender wage gap was 59 percent, with dramatic improvements during the 1980s, from 60 percent in 1980 to 69 percent

by 1989. But improvement since then has been slow. “On March 8, we are celebrating the onehundredth anniversary of International Women’s Day, but looking at the persistent gender wage gap makes the occasion sobering,” said Ariane Hegewisch, Study Director with IWPR. “Women's lower earnings relative to men mean that their families have lower incomes than if there were no wage gap,” said Jeffrey Hayes, Ph.D., Senior Research Associate at IWPR. “Women have less money to save for the future, and their Social Security will reflect their lower earnings after they retire." Hayes projected the future change in the wage ratio forward, based on the past 50 years of data on women’s and men’s median annual earnings for full-time, year-round work, available from the U.S. Census Bureau. The Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) conducts rigorous research and disseminates its findings to address the needs of women and their families, promote public dialogue, and strengthen communities and societies. IWPR is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

Casa limpia, gente estudiosa O

(Historia completa www.el-observador.com) ∆

How to make dining out fresh, healthy and affordable for families (ARA) here are times when pulling together a meal at home isn't in the cards; and finding time to cook a meal and gather everyone around the table is just too hard. The easiest time-saving solution is going out to eat, but that too can seem daunting when looking for a family meal that has both good nutrition and comes at a reasonable cost. Not to fear, menus and prices are changing.

T

In recent years, greater emphasis has been placed on eating fresh, and when possible, local foods. As the demand for healthier menu options has grown across a wider audience, more restaurants at a variety of price points have responded by offering foods made with fresh ingredients, at prices that won't hurt the family budget. This trend also means that consumers have to be savvy about where - and what - they're eating. What's presented as healthy isn't always the best choice. The best defense here is a good offense. Becoming informed about the dishes you're likely to pick and the restaurants you frequently visit will allow you to make the right choices.

Health

There are a few key things to look for when taking the family out for a meal: * Fresh ingredients. These can be particularly hard to come by in a restaurant setting, so it's good to find restaurants that have a mission to serve fresh foods. Some restaurants, like Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes, make the effort to ensure that the food they offer on their salad bar and the ingredients in their freshly prepared foods come straight from the farm to the restaurant kitchen, with as little transit time as possible in between. That means that the food not only tastes better, it's also in optimal condition for healthy eating. * A wide variety of options. Families have to cater to a lot of very different taste preferences, which can make dining out a challenge. And we all know it can be a challenge to get kids to choose healthy foods over junk food. By going out together to a restaurant that has a buffet format coupled with freshly-made wholesome foods, you'll be able to let everyone pick out what's to their taste with the peace of mind that they're eating well. * Know nutrition. Make it a point to talk to

Becoming informed about the dishes you're likely to pick and the restaurants you frequently visit will allow you to make the right choices. your family about healthy ingredients and how they make a difference in their lives. It's also useful to explain calories - how many go into a healthy diet, what's too little and what's too much - and give kids examples of how many calories are in a variety of prepared foods. Some restaurant websites, like that of Souplantation, make it easy to find out exactly what the nutritional values are in each item they serve. Having a realistic view of what goes into the food you eat plays a big role in making healthy choices when eating

out. By knowing what to look for, it's easier to make smart choices at restaurants that are wallet-friendly, disproving the myth that it costs a lot to eat the healthiest foods. And when you find a place that meets the requirements of healthy, affordable and fresh, spread the word to friends. Whether you go out on a multi-family lunch date or give restaurant gift cards, you'll be sharing smart.

Saving child care By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

T

he governor of California has a lot of programs worried about money. Jerry Brown has proposed a statewide reduction of 35% or $716 million in funding for the State Department of Education Child Development and care programs. One of those programs severely impacted would be San Mateo-based nonprofit Peninsula Family Service. Peninsula Family Service has been providing full and partially subsidized child care for nearly 40 years and daily care for approximately 300 children from low income families located throughout the Peninsula. “We don’t know what is going to happen after July 1st,” said Boris Alvarado, director, Peninsula Family Services. If the proposed budget is adopted, the organization would lose $770,000 annually in state funding and would be forced to close almost all of its child development centers. Related staff layoffs would also potentially occur. “We understand there is a big deficit in California so Peninsula Family Services and other organizations are working very closely with Governor Brown,” said Alvarado. Alvarado testified at the California Assembly Budget Hearings in Sacramento on February 2 as well as parents and others. Parents that were not able to attend wrote letters that were delivered to state officials, where they expressed their concerns about the current situation. The Latino community is one of the largest ethnic populations served by Peninsula Family Service. It also provides care for the children of homeless families and teen mothers. “There was a study done that shows that if the 35% cut gets implemented, 90% of child care services will be cut in San Mateo,” said Alvarado. Peninsula Family Service already fundraises to compensate for child care funding deficits and does not have the ability to fundraise to the level necessary to cover the proposed cuts. While there is a plan for an increase in parent fees to fill the funding gap, low income parents do not have the ability to pay a fee increase. Parents are being encouraged to continue writing and calling state officials. Peninsula Family Services will deliver any letter dropped off at their locations. To support continued and reliable quality, subsidized child care and education for children of low-income families on the Peninsula by the Peninsula Family Service program, call the following representatives: Assemblyman Jerry Hill - (916) 319-2019 Assemblyman Rich Gordon (916) 319-2021 Senator Leland Yee (916) 651-4008 Senator Joe Simitian - (916) 651-4008

Regresa Cirque Du Soleil con acróbatas Latinos Por Rosario Vital - El Observador

¡Mujeres a triunfar!:

artist. That title can also be applied to her life. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Sohanny was very close to her grandfather, but by age 8 her parents decided to move to the US, unknowingly changing the rest of her life. Sohanny remembers wanting to be a doctor when she found out her grandfather had died. She wanted to save people, except she couldn’t stop singing and dancing. At one point in her life she wrote a monologue about him, which led her to Hollywood, her true calling in life. “I have the freedom to express how I feel, I can share it with everyone and I’m very fortunate to do it,â€? said Sohanny during a phone interview with El Observador. Sohanny’s single is #5 on the list of Tropical Latin of Mediabase and is in the top 40 of Tropical Latin of Nielsen/BDS. The urban merengue based song was produced by Richy PeĂąa, who received a Grammy for “Mi NiĂąa Bonita,â€? by Chino y Nacho. The song features Fuego, the artist that gives it that urban feel. “This is my life, this is my passion, and I’m happy

that I have this opportunity, said Sohanny. While in high school, Sohanny would practice her singing with a karaoke machine her parents bought her, instead of going out with friends like any other teen, she preferred singing to practice her lyrics. Performing was her priority and at age 16, she was on the cover of a local magazine in Rhode Island. Once she let go of her fears, she knew she wanted to be on TV and/or the radio. And she puts her heart and soul in everything she does, such as her music. She recently performed at Premios Casandra 2011, a prestigious televised gala in the Dominican Republic and got the chance to record the video for “No Es Normal. Sohanny continues to work on her project, is eager to work with other artists, is writing down her dreams on paper and is working to share her music with potential fans. “My music is definitely tropical but it’s going to have a little bit of everything, said Sohanny. The debut album should be out by summer of 2011. To listen to her single visit, www.sohanny.com.

iev.
