Sitio web para protegerte de falsos abogados

W

ashington DC.

California Latino Legislative Caucus Promotes Candidates to Replace Retiring California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno (Sacramento) he California Latino Legislative Caucus has signed a letter recommending Governor Jerry Brown continue his impressive legacy of promoting diversity within California by appointing a Latino(a) candidate to replace Justice Carlos Moreno on the California Supreme Court. The Caucus, which is comprised of 23 members of the Legislature who collectively represent over 13 million Californians, has recommended four exceptional legal professionals for consideration by the Governor. Those candidates are: * Christopher David Ruiz Cameron, Esq, Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School * Judge Katherine Lucero, Santa Clara County Superior Court * José R. Padilla, Esq, Executive Director of California Rural Legal Assistance * Justice Maria P. Rivera, California Court of Appeal, First District

T

“It is not lost on us that as the former Governor of California your exceptional record of diversity led to the appointment of a record number of Latinos, including the Honorable Cruz Reynoso,” said Caucus members Assemblyman Tony Mendoza (D-Norwalk), Senator Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) and Assemblyman Luis A. Alejo (D-Salinas) in a letter to Governor Brown. “Many of us have directly benefited from the path you paved over three decades ago. In that spirit, we believe that it is a logical next step to make certain that our State’s highest Court continues to represent the strong value of diversity.” Justice Moreno, who has served with distinction on the California Supreme Court since 2001 when he was appointed by Gov. Gray Davis, announced his retirement from the court effective February 28, 2011. The new appointee will be subject to a retention vote on the 2012 general election ballot.

Opinion

Change Can Be Scary By Hilbert Morales

T

his past week I made it a point to be at the “State of the County” presentation by Supervisor David Cortese, President, Board of Supervisors, County of Santa Clara. I have followed the budget proposals of Governor Jerry Brown, State of California, and in the near future, Mayor Chuck Reed, City of San Jose, will make his “State of the City” address. All of these leaders eventually are co-opted by President Barack Obama’s State of the Union presentation made this past Tuesday, January 25, 2011. All attempted to deal with continuing services at a level that our current economy cannot, and will not, provide sufficient supportive revenues. The required changes at all levels of government can be scary. Imagine all levels of government scaling down to spending only what can be paid for with tax revenues being generated. Everybody has become accustomed to ‘entitlements’ with the expectation that ‘government’ will provide and pay for the cost of delivering the required amounts of money to sustain and continue all entitlements. What is obvious to those who are willing to deal with reality is that America at all levels must prepare for a frugal and austere way of life. I continue to believe that there is a way to resolve our habit of having others pay. We must begin to do more for ourselves beginning with each individual resident who must begin to hold every elected official accountable for voting “YES” to all those proposals for which there are no supportive tax revenues. The outcome is an “incomplete contract’ whose full costs have not been calculated and whose funding source has not been established. We have too many of these forms of contracts. These must be eliminated now…sooner better than later. President Obama addressed the nation with the theme “Let’s win the future”. Many of his proposals were on the mark in that many government agencies have become outmoded and outdated. All these must become reorganized to perform their mandates using the latest information technologies which have enabled a global community and economy. I agree with his proposal to use information technology to inform the public when a lobbyist compromises any elected official with an excessive contribution. We need leg-

islation to establish when an elected official has a ‘conflict of interest’ that recuses him/her from voting on specific special interest legislation because the contributions have compromised his/her ability to be fair and objective while dealing with what is best for the people of this nation. This nation’s uniqueness is not based on corporate interests and perks. It is based on the idea that each individual is unique and has certain rights and responsibilities. I support the redirection of subsidies, provided to the ‘Big Oil”, to the development of all alternative energy sources. The allocation of existing resources must be used to permit the development of new knowledge which in turn creates new processes ,which in turn enable the creation of jobs which produce a good or service for which a market exists or is created. While innovation is important, it is also prudent to perform the ‘scale-up’ activities in our own nation. Our nation has permitted too many multi-national enterprises to profit without being responsible for providing employment opportunity to our own. Enterprises must not only make a profit but also be responsible for providing employment opportunities to our own residents. Innovation requires a highly trained and informed mind which may become creative. Therefore, President Obama is correct in proposing that all levels of education become more efficient and effective in the preparation of the minds of our youth. Access to required training must become available to all, especially those whose jobs have been outsourced. While it is the responsibility of an individual to provide for self and family, the educational system must be accessible to those who have the motivation to learn. In focusing on domestic issues, President Obama is correct in asking Congress to complete the work already begun to deal with the undocumented residents already in our nation. At the minimum the “Dream Act” must become the law of the land. Too many public policy issues cannot be included in this commentary. Know that progress is never accomplished without becoming uncomfortable. Each of us must deal with our own reaction to the fact that change is scary.Change becomes less “scary” when we know we are ‘there’ for each other.

Crime and Gang Prevention Summit By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

O

n Januar y 22, Ma yor Chuck Reed and the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force held a Crime and Gang P revention Summit at the Seven Trees Community Center in San Jose. The community summit brought together representatives from the City of San Jose, non-profit organizations, and local neighborhoods to build and e xpand partnerships in hopes of making the city a safer place. “We have a plan, w e have a program…we will take control of our streets,” said Mayor Chuck Reed. Reed made it clear that taking care of the city requires a huge c ollaborative effort and w ould like to maintain a connection with the community.

The summit featured three workshops, a community resource fair, and three community leaders who were recognized. Workshop topics included “Gang 101,” “Faith Based Approach,” and “Cleaner, Safer, and Engaged Communities.” The workshops offered residents an opportunity to share their concerns about gang activity and to provide input on the Cit y’s efforts to prevent and suppress local gangs. “I saw a one to one basis and I w ould like to see more examples of what’s really going on, like testimonials to see what’s out there and prevent future crimes and incidents,” said Maria Peralta, San Jose resident. Since inception in 1991 under former Mayor Susan Hammer, the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force has brought together law enforcement, city staff, and com-

munity stakeholders to collaborate and respond to the changing community needs. The nationally recognized task force program is being replicated by cities throughout California. “The information in the pr esentations was very helpful,” said Laura Villalobos, Community leader, Sacred Heart. “It’s important for the future of our children.” Gang 101 exposed the audience to what a gang really is. The presenter gave his personal st ory of how gang life changed his life. He talked about the different reasons young people join gangs and taught the audience how to recognize gang activity. “I r eally lik ed the dialogue tha t t ook plac e. It helped me r ealize ho w we can c ommunicate,” said Katherine Rodrigue z, P rogram D irector, C ommUni-

verCity. Rodriguez plans on applying some of the tips while at work with at risk youth. She also learned a great deal from the Cleaner , S afer, and Engaged C ommunities workshop, where community members w ere made aware of grants awarded to community based organizations in need of funding for their programs. The summit focused on different ways to make the city a safer place, but more importantly, it focused on how to get the community involved in the process. 2011 State of the County Address By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

O

n January 25th, Supervisor Dave Cortese 2011 President, Board of Supervisors, gave his State of the County Address. It was Cortese’s first State of the County Address. The speech was delivered in the Santa Clara County Governmental Center, First/Hedding Streets, San Jose, CA 95110. The County’s supervisors and staff officials sat behind the president. Among the topics that Cortese covered in his speech were the County’s fiscal condition; the need to go forward; notable past accomplishments; and new initiatives. Some of the notable past accomplishments mentioned were the new solar power purchase agreements and instillations; new environmental stewardship goals; challenging the Arizona immigration law; and prioritizing child welfare issues. “Current projections suggest that between now and June we will have to close another $200 million revenue gap,” said Cortese. “We will respond as we always have, on time and with a balanced budget by June 30th.” Cortese wants to put Juvenile Hall out of business beginning with declaring “2011 The Year of the Child.” One of the goals is to get highly skilled employees out in the community

to work on prevention and early intervention instead of locking up kids. The separation of adult and juvenile probation systems is another goal. “I am going to ask the Board of Supervisors to adopt a resolution encouraging the endorsement and adoption of A-G requirements by every school district in this county,” said Cortese. Last year, the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, along with the East Side Union High School District led the effort to bring AG curriculum and college prep coursework requirements to the ESUHSD. Cortese recognized that children couldn’t prosper if their families are not prospering and schooling is only one aspect. Only by working with the private sector, can additional jobs be made available locally for the head of the family responsible for providing for his/her family. Although declaring “2011 The Year of the Child,” senior programs such as that of providing “Meals On Wheels” will remain the same. The president’s office will work with members of the mental health board to organize and schedule the county’s first summit on the mental health care needs of the “Baby Boomer” senior population. “I am asking all of us, to rededicate our selves to that ‘can do spirit’ one more time as we meet the challenges before us,” said Cortese.

VTA Offers Mobility Training to Keep Seniors Active

S

an Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is actively working with older adults and persons with disabilities to be independent and expand their travel options. VTA’s Mobility Options Program offers free travel training and practical experience for individuals to safely and confidently use accessible VTA bus and light rail services throughout Santa Clara County. Over 100 senior adults are scheduled for a presentation on Tuesday, January 25, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Channing House in Palo Alto who will soon benefit from the informational and travel training experience much like program graduate Steve Lorence has already. “The ability to use buses and light rail has made such a difference in my life because now I can make more spur-of-the-moment travel decisions,” he said. Travel instruction is tailored to meet individual needs and typically includes topics such as: pedestrian safety, trip planning, reading

schedules, using the wheelchair lift or ramp and securement system (if needed), and using and understanding fare options. With confidence and skills to travel independently, new graduates of the program enjoy the benefits of using the public transportation system like saving money, gas and other resources; having the option of same day, spontaneous travel; all while reducing traffic congestion and being good for the environment. “Travel training was very helpful to me,” said Betty Jackson, a senior adult with a physical disability who enjoyed her latest experience using VTA services. “I am happy to know I now can get where I need to go basically anytime I want.” To receive a brochure on VTA’s Mobility Options Program or schedule travel training for your group, please call VTA’s Customer Service Center at (408) 321-2300, TTY only, (408) 321-2330. From Burnt Out to Behind the Burner (NewsUSA) any Americans in unrewarding careers are choosing to enter new fields as unemployment rates continue to soar. Forced from longtime positions in some of the nation's largest industries, men and women alike are making the jump into the world of professional cooking as they trade pinstripes for chef whites. "Our culinary arts and pastry career programs have been attracting students of all ages and professional backgrounds," said Rick Smilow, president of the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. "We have everyone from former Wall Street bankers to marketing managers to talented kids out of high school or college, all of whom are looking to switch careers in the rocky economy." But a diploma from a leading culinary school doesn't only lend itself to a position as a chef. More and more culinary school graduates are using their degrees to enter the fields of hospitality, food media and personal start-ups from

coast to coast. Professionally trained chefs can go on to command kitchens or boardrooms, which allows them to dip into an industry driven by their passion rather than economic gains. "Our students go on to work in some of the top restaurants in the country," Smilow said. "But they aren't all working directly as chefs; a lot of them get involved in fields like research and development at major food brands, work in food media or are entrepreneurs building food businesses." The rise of culinary school enrollments may signal an oncoming tidal wave of careerchangers, as economic woes leave many with a desire to start new in an industry once only considered a dream job. Turn your hobby into a small business

(ARA) ave you ever dreamed of getting paid for something you love to do? Like turning those cookies that your friends rave about into a cookie store? Expanding the sales of the jewelry that you make for the local arts and crafts fair to others? Selling used golf equipment that you clean and fix up on eBay? Or getting paid to help people install and maintain their complicated home electronics? Each year, thousands of Americans take the leap and start a business, leveraging their expertise and passion for a particular interest or hobby. In fact, more than 600,000 new businesses are launched every year in the United States, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. If you're ready to turn your hobby into a business, it's essential, according to FindLaw.com, the world's leading online source for legal information, to do your research, build a business plan, tap the expertise of outside professionals such as an accountant and attorney, and keep good records to avoid the ire of the Internal Revenue Service. Through careful research and planning, you'll discover what the potential is for your business idea, and what pitfalls to avoid that may otherwise derail you from realizing your dream. Here are some tips for turning your hobby into a business from FindLaw.com: Research your idea. The very first step in turning your hobby into a business is to find out who will buy your product or

H

service, how much they're willing to pay for it, how many of these people there are, and where they're located. It's critical to understand your "topline" - the sales potential for your product or service. Get free help. Trial and error is an essential part of the entrepreneurial experience. But making big, costly mistakes that have the potential of killing your business is something to be avoided. Tapping the experience of seasoned business professionals can help you avoid such mistakes, and provide you perspective in times of great stress. One piece of advice: find a mentor. If you're not comfortable finding one yourself, check out the Small Business Administration's SCORE program, a 12,000strong, nationwide group of retired executives who volunteer their expertise to help small business owners grow and succeed. Write a business plan. Put your ideas on paper to test their viability and improve your chances for success. A business plan is a very useful tool - it gives you and others, such as your accountant, banker or attorney, a clear idea of your goals, the processes you'll implement to achieve those goals and how you'll measure your success. Have a clear plan for funding. Whether you're financing your efforts out of your own pocket, or require capital from others to expand, you need to know where your start-up capital will come from (if you need it), whether you will be servicing a debt and what resources you can call upon in the future. Many en-

trepreneurs start with friends, family and people in their community to fund their initial efforts. Know how you're going to bring in revenue. What you make, after all of your expenses and taxes have been paid, is your profit. It's the ultimate measure of your business' success. Before you decide to start a business, you need to project whether the revenues (sales of your product or services) will exceed your expenses. This will give you a clear idea of whether you should consider turning your hobby into a business. Set up your business structure. Contact an attorney who specializes in working with small businesses to get advice on the proper legal structure under which you should incorporate your business, or first visit FindLaw.com's Do-It-Yourself Legal Forms to learn more about how to incorporate your business. Incorporating your business can help protect your personal assets from liabilities like creditors or lawsuits. Make it real. One of the advantages of starting a small business is that you can deduct losses such as your expenses and depreciation on assets you purchase to offset taxable income. It's best to consult an accountant who specializes in small business to obtain advice on preventative measures you can take to avoid being audited. Some basic steps to take to clearly demonstrate you're in business, versus treating your efforts as a hobby, are to obtain federal and state tax identification numbers, print up business

cards and letterhead, maintain a set of books to record sales and expenses, set up a separate bank account for your business and keep a logbook in your vehicle to record mileage. Get the proper licenses and permits. Depending upon the type of business you start, you may need to get a permit(s) or occupational license from your city or state. Many cities and counties require every business - even single-owner, home-based operations - to get a business license (tax registration certificate). You also may have to get a sales tax permit from your state. Protect your idea. In the course of pursuing your hobby, you may create a new process for doing something, a product or a creative brand name. If you think it has any potential, run - don't walk - to an attorney who specializes in intellectual property to seek a trademark or patent on your idea. Be very cautious about sharing your idea with anyone, who, in the future, could claim that he or she helped you with developing that idea and therefore deserves a cut of your revenues. Invest in a website. If you

want people to know about your new business, you must have a website. Most people now immediately turn to the Internet to find products and services to meet their needs, as well as to find information such as directions and contact information. Nearly equally as important, invest time to set up a Facebook and LinkedIn page for your business, advertise your services online through Google, and consider banner ads on other websites. Create a workspace. What are the space needs for your new business? Do you require storage space? Industrial strength refrigeration? Extra power? Two sewing machines? A quiet place to make uninterrupted phone calls? According to the Small Business Administration, more than half of America's small businesses are operated from a home, which offers important tax advantages. However, it's important to carefully follow IRS rules and clearly designate space for your business from personal space. To learn more about how to start a new business, visit FindLaw.com.

New Charter High School Seeking Approval From Santa Clara County Board of Education

O

n February 2, the County will review plans for a unique and groundbreaking model of high school education. Supporters of Communitas Charter High School will appear before the Santa Clara County Board of Education on February 2, 2011, to ask for approval of their countywide charter petition. The school program offers a variety of best practices including a small and close school community, adult mentorships, student-driven academic challenges, portfolio exhibitions, and real-world projects and internships. Members of the public are encouraged to attend this hearing (and the decision hearing on March 2) to voice their support for a new educational option. If approved, Communitas Charter High School will open its first campus in Santa Clara County in fall 2011 with grades 9 and 10. The school will add one grade each year after that until it is fully enrolled with grades 9-12. "Communitas has a unique vision" says Dale Jones, Executive Director of Discovery Charter School and a Communitas Founder, "to build a truly student-centered high school. One which is built upon the foundation of numerous progressive, parent-participation schools in the County, all of which unfortunately end at 6th or 8th grade. Communitas offers for the first time a chance to continue a proven alternative to the high-stakes, high-stress race that characterizes the high school experience for so many of today's students."

In a county where 16% of students drop out of high school and only 49% of those who do graduate have completed the coursework required for entrance to UC and CSU schools, the Communitas Charter program encourages an innovative approach to teaching and a commitment to fostering a more personalized and engaging school experience for students. The collaborative, mutually respectful culture at the heart of Communitas will support the achievement of all students and will offer a high school option that reflects the inventive spirit of Silicon Valley. Communitas Charter High School is a local initiative by a group of progressive educators and parents from all over Santa Clara County to offer a collaborative, integrated classroom experience where each student is known and grows in enthusiasm, curiosity, and wisdom. This distinctive educational program will better prepare students for college through personalized inquiry and self-reflection, and in-depth cultural study. The name "Communitas" refers to an anthropological concept based on the work of Victor Turner: "an intense feeling of social togetherness and belonging, standing at the threshold of the rite of passage into adulthood. In this free and connected place, young people are able to express their extraordinary capacities for learning, caring, determination and creativity." More information can be found at www.communitascharter.org.

SamTrans Invites Students to Enter Annual Art Contest

S

an Mateo County elementary school students are invited to enter the annual SamTrans art competition, “Art Takes a Bus Ride.” The theme for the contest, which is co-sponsored by the San Mateo County Office of Education, is “Postcards from SamTrans.” Young artists are encouraged to imagine themselves as tourists riding SamTrans and visiting fun destinations along the Peninsula and then sending a postcard to friends and family showing them what they did. The winning entries will illustrate SamTrans buses traveling to popular destinations in San Mateo County. A variety of media, including water color, acrylic, crayon and collage, can be used. A total of six designs will be selected from the student submissions, with two winners from each grade division – grades1-2; 3-4; and 5-6. The artists’ winning entries will be featured on adcards inside SamTrans buses, and on the spe-

cial SamTrans Art Bus, which is “wrapped” in the colorful art work of the artists. Applications and contest rules are available on the SamTrans website. San Mateo County teachers interested in more information and how to submit student entries, can call Marilyn Canadas, San Mateo County Office of Education, at 650-802-5338. Deadline for entries is Friday, Feb. 18, at 5 p.m. Please do not submit entries directly to the San Mateo County Transit District. On a typical weekday, nearly 12,000 young people ride SamTrans buses, more than 25 percent of the District’s total ridership. In addition to a discounted youth fare, tokens and Monthly Youth pass, the District also encourages young people to ride the bus by offering a deeply discounted Summer Youth Pass for riders 17 years old and younger. Students now have the option to board using cash or pass loaded onto a Clipper card.

Superior Court at Santa Clara County Launches Middle School Education Court SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF

T

he Superior Court of California at Santa Clara County announces the launch of a specialty court, the Middle School Education Court (MSEC). The MSEC seeks to improve the education outcome of middle school foster youth through system-wide collaboration and accountability by bringing all the agencies responsible for the care and education of foster youth under one umbrella: the Court. The MSEC program compiles current and past school records, conducts needs-assessment evaluations, develops educational plans and protocols in order to support middle school age children in foster care, with the goal of helping them realize their academic potential to attain success in their adult life. Expected outcomes of the court include improving overall academic performance, test scores, GPAs and attendance rates of Santa Clara County middle school foster youth. The Honorable Teresa Guerrero-Daley presides over this new court and leads a team of professionals that includes lawyers, social workers, education specialists, child advocates, school district liaisons and community leaders in implementing the MSEC — the first education-specific dependency court for middle

school youth in the nation. “It is not uncommon for older foster youth to be moved from home to home and thus, often from school to school,” said the Honorable Katherine Lucero, Supervising Judge of the Juvenile Dependency Court. “Foster youth don’t have the basic benefit of having a single committed adult involved in their education, monitoring their academic progress, attendance, supporting extracurricular activities and ensuring they receive an appropriate education.” “Often, Child Advocates are the only consistent adults in a foster child’s life for a period of time,” said Vickie Grove, Executive Director for Child Advocates of Silicon Valley. “Our goal is to ensure that all foster youth feel supported in their education, and that they have adults helping them succeed, accompanying them to court and cheering them on.” Statistics show that education outcomes for foster youth, nationally and locally, tend to be poor. Compared to youngsters outside the foster care system, foster students are more likely to have higher rates of absenteeism, perform below grade level, be held back in school and, twice as likely, to drop out of high school. “We hope this new program brings much needed sup-

port in monitoring our foster children’s academic progress and attendance to ensure that they do not slip through the cracks,” said Supervisor Dave Cortese, President of the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors and Chair of the Board’s Children, Seniors and Families Committee. The cost of not succeeding academically is tremendous, to both the foster youth and to society. The MSEC has been established to change the current course that affects the approximately 1,300 children in foster care in Santa Clara County. "We believe that the MSEC will reinvent court supervision and accountability for foster youth education by breaking down the individual and systemic barriers that stand in the way of foster youth success in school,” said Elise Cutini, Executive Director of the Silicon Valley Children's Fund. “We are proud to have played a leading role in launching the nation's first problem solving court dedicated to foster youth education.” According to The National Center for Youth Law, Foster Youth Education Initiative 2010: * Fewer than 3 percent of foster youth attend a fouryear college. * Less than 1 percent of foster youth attains a fouryear college degree. * Approximately 25

percent of former foster children experience homelessness. * Around 25 percent of foster youth have been arrested and have spent time incarcerated. * Approximately 33 percent of foster youth receive public assistance. * Unemployment among former foster youth is above 50 percent.

MyPyramid Helps Families Find Balanced Nutrition By Elizabeth M. Ward, M.S., R.D. (NewsUSA) yPyramid -- also known as the food pyramid -is a guide for good eating for healthy people, ages two to 102. It serves as the blueprint for better nutrition, focusing on foods to include, rather than exclude, in a diet for you and your family. The pyramid's eating patterns are meant to help you increase your intake of essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber; minimize saturated fat, trans fats, and cholesterol; and help to promote a healthy weight. MyPyramid is based on the latest scientific evidence about nutrition reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The best part of MyPyramid is that it is easily personalized to fit your needs and food preferences. Under the MyPyramid system, you pick the suggested amount of food from the food groups based on your age, gender, and physical activity level. You can figure out what you need at www.MyPyramid.gov. Here are some tips for including the nutrient-rich foods MyPyramid recommends from each food group: Grains: Go With the Whole Grain * Start the day with a natural, whole grain cereal, like Mom's Best Naturals Sweetened Wheat-fuls, to get nearly all the whole grain you need. * Prepare sandwiches with whole grain breads. * Snack on popcorn -- a whole grain -- rather than pretzels and snack chips.

M

Vegetables: Variety Is Key * Make vegetables part of soups, casseroles, meatloaf and pasta dishes. * Serve raw, sliced vegetables with peanut butter or hummus for snacks. * Choose bean-based soups, such as lentil, and add beans to salads. Fruits: How to Get Your Fill * Stock up on dried fruit. It's portable and versatile. Make trail mix with raisins, Mom's Best Natural's cereal and chopped nuts for a snack with selections from three food groups. * Keep fruit in plain sight so kids and adults will think to snack on it. * Puree canned fruits, such as apricots, or berries, and combine with plain yogurt. Milk: Dairy Delivers Nutrients * Work in a serving of fat-free or low-fat milk when you have a bowl of cereal. Microwave oatmeal with milk instead of water. * Make a smoothie with fruit and milk. * Sneak a piece of low-fat cheddar into your sandwich. Meat & Beans: An Array of Animal and Vegetable Choices * Make chili with half the lean ground beef and twice the beans. * Sick of chicken? Opt for pork tenderloin. It has less fat than skinless, boneless chicken breast.

Men: Are You at a Greater Risk of Heart Attack? (NewsUSA) - It's well known that more men have heart attacks than women, but many men don't think about their cardiac health until there's a problem. To further complicate matters, cardiologists can't diagnose heart disease until the condition is advanced enough to cause high cholesterol or a blockage -- problems that increase the risk of heart attack. Most heart disease is coronary heart disease, in which arterial plaque build-up narrows blood vessels, lessening the amount of blood and oxygen that reaches the heart. While most men don't have heart attacks until later in life - the average man gets his first heart attack at age 65 -- plaque has been found in the hearts of 20-year-olds. That means that arterial plaque can build up for decades before men develop high cholesterol or blockages or experience heart attacks. There are, however, certain symptoms that indicate coronary heart disease. For example, daytime fatigue and lethargy are common in men with heart disease. If routine activities suddenly become exhausting, or if men find themselves easily winded, they should speak to a doctor. Likewise, a man's ability to achieve an erection can serve as a barometer of overall health, with dysfunction often acting as a precursor for other existing or potential health issues. In a study of 1,500 men, which was published in "Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association," found that men with both erectile dysfunction (ED)

and cardiovascular disease were twice as likely to have a heart attack than men with cardiovascular disease, but no ED. What's the connection? The male organ contains arteries like the ones in the heart, only much smaller in scale, so it takes less arterial plaque to create a blockage. ED, then, can function as an early warning sign -- men may still have time before the arterial plaque in the heart builds up enough to cause a serious blockage or heart attack. Because ED may be linked to heart disease, men should consult a specialist before trying overthe-counter treatments. Doctors who specifically deal with sexual dysfunction issues, such as physicians with Boston Medical Group (www.bostonmedicalgroup.com), can identify underlying issues, such as heart disease, that may be causing ED. Angina usually occurs with exercise, during times of emotional stress or after eating, when the heart demands more oxygen than clogged blood vessels can provide. The most common cause of angina is coronary heart disease. Chest pain may radiate to other areas of the body, such as the jaw, arms or back. Patients may also sweat, feel weak, nauseated or fatigued, or develop shortness of breath. Men experiencing a squeezing pain or pressure in the chest, or angina, should see a doctor for a cardiac exam.

Talento latino abunda en Hollywood

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS

®

BEST ACTOR • Javier Bardem BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Por Rosario Vital- El Observador

A
