Muchos no elegimos quedarnos aquí.

Fourteen Years of Evolution By Job Lopez

hen Saint Joseph the Worker Center (SJWC), now Day Worker Center of Mountain View (DWCMV) opened for business in the fall of 1996, on Jordan Ave. and El Camino Real, after having a temporary office for a few months at Saint Joseph Church Rectory on Hope St., I never thought or dreamed the day would come when the Center will have a building of its own to call HOME!

our spiritual ambassador through whom the Supreme Being has assisted us all. The fall of 1996 witnessed the Center’s birth. The Fall of 2010 sees the Center proudly moving into its brand new home: professionally landscaped, appropriately renovated and remodeled to better serve the day workers with the dignity they deserve and for whom it was founded to begin with. It is with great satisfaction to see how the new building has been designed and remodeled to provide space for English as a second language classes and meeting rooms, ample space for the workers to gather while they wait for employers to hire them. There is the kitchen, dining area, patio, classrooms, restrooms, offices, and lobby all beautifully furnished. For those of us who have been involved with the Day Worker Center and have followed its history through its 14 years with all its ups and downs, sad and happy days, just entering its new offices, walking through its various rooms, lifts up our spirits. Even though the main purpose of the Center is to connect the workers with prospective employers, unfortunately not enough employers come in daily to hire those who need to work to provide for their families. The Center addresses other of the workers needs. For instance, it provides them the opportunity to meet other people and make friends and gives them the opportunity to learn English thanks to the many volunteer teachers who come daily to teach. It provides them with basic legal and medical assistance, food and clothing supplies thanks to some private donors and agencies that donate the items to the Center. In a way the Center is for many workers a second home, a place where they can socialize as a way to forget at least for a short while other difficult situations they face daily. In view of such a reality I can only say, once again, thank God for the good people, who contributed their treasure, time and talents to make real the dream of a beautiful Day Worker Center in Mountain View that the Lord Himself, I am sure, is proud of. Job Lopez is a cofounder of DWCMV and was the first President of its Board of Directors.

SJWC was founded thanks to the vision, tenacity and good will of Fr. Eugene O’Donnell, the then Pastor of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Mountain View, and the late Kate Wakerly ex-editor of The View and cofounder of Mountain View Voice. The goal of Fr. O’Donnell and Mrs. Wakerly was to provide a dignified setting for day workers who in those days had begun to gather on both sides of El Camino Real between San Antonio Road and Showers Ave. in Mountain View and Los Altos looking for work. On April in 2004 we sadly lost the other pillar of the center: Mrs. Kate Wakerly passed on long before her time. But many other people as generous as Fr. O’Donnell and Kate Wakerly stepped in to help the Day Worker Center of Mountain View, to the extent that today 14 years later the Center is the proud owner of a debt-free building it now calls HOME. Maria Marroquin, the Executive Director of the Day Worker Center in Mtn. View since 2002 is one more of the key players in the accomplishments of the center. Without her dedication, long days of hard work and great love for the cause of the workers ?men and women- many things would not had been accomplished. John Rinaldi, who joined the Day Worker Center Board of Directors at the end of 1996, played a key role in getting the Center reopened in May of 2002 at the Calvary Church on California St. and Escuela Ave, in Mountain View. This was the third site for the Center after it closed at Jordan Ave., Los Altos, CA. when the lease was not renewed. Fr. Robert (Bob) Moran from the very beginning has been a pool of moral support,

The Giving Pledge

BC’s “This Week” with Christiane Amonpour made a very comprehensive presentation about “The Giving Pledge” which billionaires Warren Buffett, Melinda and Bill Gates, and Ted Turner have implemented during the past few years. While the program focused on the philanthropy of these very wealthy individuals who are doing great things with their money, all made statements which impact all Americans. For example, Billionaire Warren Buffett said, “I made a small 16 person poll about personal taxes. I learned that I had the lowest tax rate (16%) even though I had no financial planner or advisor. It was all due to the government programs that provided credits and deductions, which lowered my taxes. The rich should pay higher taxes. Right now, tax cuts are lifting the yachts without also lifting the rowboats.” Bill and Melinda Gates commented, “Wealth comes with great opportunities and responsibilities. That is why we are focused on health, education and poverty with our philanthropic giving.” This couple has three children, which they plan to educate well but not leave them with a legacy of wealth they did not personally earn. Bill Gates said, “Our children need to form their own identities and deal with their own challenges.” This couple provided $15 billion to deal with the Aids epidemic and poverty in Africa. In America, their focus is on education because without a knowledge base and skill set that is in demand today, those who are not informed and prepared will continue to be the unemployed. During this program, Ted Turner revealed that during one year recently he lost his fortune, job, wife and a grandchild. He decided not to quit because “Quitters never win while winners never quit.” Turner provided money to fund the U.N. Foundation, which is addressing the reduction of nuclear weapons with its nuclear initiative program. These billionaires decided to begin “The Giving Pledge.” Warren Buffett contacted other billionaires with the result that 40 made the moral pledge to give their wealth to causes that improve things for ordinary people. They correctly pointed out that on many occasions, government agency es and non-profits need

help from individuals. Turner provided $5 million, which enabled weapons grade nuclear material to be diluted before others, especially terrorists, could acquire it. As an individual he was not hindered by the existing policies and procedures the government agencies need to follow. These three billionaires were confident that the American capitalistic system would create opportunities and jobs in the near future. It may take some time. All were focused on being good citizens and doing the right thing with their immense wealth It was Melinda Gates who said, “Many people of modest means give much through volunteerism. They provide the time and talent, which makes many non-profit community based organizations work well. That is very important and needs to be promoted more. When people know that ‘giving’ is happening, a certain momentum is created that ends up doing much good in that community.” You are never too poor to give. How will you prepare to give to those who need your help? How will you grow in the understanding that you may have something to give? When will more of us see the light? We too easily become unseeing, swept up in the festivities of these holidays. Try to become mindful of those among us who are experiencing poverty for the first time. These individuals may be unemployed, without hope, and without joy. Just make an effort to look about you to see those in need in your local community. Governmental programs and non-profit organizations need your help in dealing with the many needs, which exist now in our community. Do not wait because you will miss an opportunity to acquire the good feeling that comes with the knowledge that you have helped. One thing we can all do is to make a pledge to give when those opportunities present themselves. We all have time, talent and perhaps some extra money to share. With so many unemployed, underemployed, and some with dire poverty status, now is the time to make your own pledge to give. AN JOSE - As part of an ongoing effort to stimulate economic vitality in Silicon Valley and in communities across the nation, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced $450,000 in flexible funding and leadership training to local Silicon Valley nonprofits through its Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. “Through our Neighborhood Excellence Initiative, we are helping to generate meaningful and cumulative economic and social impact at the local level where it’s needed most,” said Raquel Gonzalez, Silicon Valley Market President, Bank of America. “In Silicon Valley and across the country, we are leveraging the combined strength of our philanthropy, and lending and investing initiatives, to help set opportunity in motion for organizations, families, individuals and entire neighborhoods.” The Neighborhood Excellence Initiative honors two other categories of community leaders: Local Heroes and Student Leaders. Local Heroes contribute significantly to the health of their neighborhood through volunteer service and civic engagement. 2010 Silicon Valley Local Heroes are: Larry Ames, of San Jose, who will direct his grant to The Guadalupe River Park Conservancy. Phyllis Liu, of San Jose, who will direct her grant to Girls for a Change. Tamon Norimoto, of San Jose, who will direct his grant to Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI). Jim Oliphant, of Los Gatos, will direct his grant to Valley Christian Schools. Rosa Ruiz, of San Jose, who will direct her grant

to Grail Family Services of San Jose. Student Leaders, who are exemplary teens with a passion for improving their communities, participated in paid, eightweek internships at Silicon Valley nonprofits this summer (at the height of the teen unemployment rate) and gathered in Washington, D.C. for a weeklong summit to learn how service creates positive change in communities and to gain tools and resources to help them continue to make a difference in their local communities. 2010 Silicon Valley Student Leaders are: Vikram Kanth, of San Jose, a senior at Lynbrook High School, interned at Silicon Valley Education Foundation during the summer. Megan Lee, of San Jose, a senior at Lynbrook High School, interned at City Year during the summer. Katia Licea, of San Jose, a recent graduate of Willow Glen High School and a freshman at Colby College (in Waterville, Maine) interned at the Silicon Valley Education Foundation during the summer. Community

Reunification Day

A

t the request of Supervisor Dave Cortese, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors adopted a res-

olution proclaiming November 9, 2010 as the Santa Clara County Family Reunification Day. Held in partnership with the Superior Court

and its stakeholders, and inspired by the declaration of June 19, 2010 as the first National Family Reunification Day, the Board will honor five families who have overcome significant challenges to reunify safely and successfully, and, five community partners who have worked tirelessly in support of the reunification and strengthening of dependency court families. For children in foster care, reunification of families is the preferred outcome and best option for a permanent and loving home.

Through a collaboration between the Superior Court, the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), Dependency Advocacy Center, Legal Advocates for Children and Youth, Office of the County Counsel, Child Advocates, and several Community Based Organizations, this celebration was created to acknowledge the profound dedication and commitment of the families and community partners who have come together with reunification as their goal.

Prepaid College Tuition The 'It' Gift This Holiday Season (NewsUSA) his holiday season, contributing to a child's college education can be the gift that lasts a lifetime. Parents and grandparents alike want to give their children and grandchildren the tools to succeed in life, and a college education can do just that. However, post-secondary education is becoming increasingly less affordable. According to the College Board, today's newborn is expected to pay $180,000 to attend a four-year, public university. Coupled with the difficult economy, college is slipping beyond reach of many families. However, by giving a College Illinois! Prepaid Tuition Program contract to a child or grandchild, you lock in a price for their future education today, staying a step ahead of tuition inflation. "The price of college for one child is steep, and we have five to worry about," said Cindy Wisniewski of Naperville, Ill., a College Illinois! Prepaid Tuition Program contract holder. "College Illinois! lets us save for college for our kids over time in a way that makes sense financially for us." Wisniewski said the flexible benefits and array of payment options attracted her to the

T

program. "Each of our children can choose to attend just about any school they want," she said. "We love being able to give them this unique opportunity to build their future." A college education is a gift that will never go out of style, and the holiday season lets purchasers take advantage of tax benefits before year-end. To give a prepaid tuition contract to a child, Andrew Davis, executive director of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the agency that administers the College Illinois! Prepaid Tuition Program suggests combining it with another gift such as a piggy bank to help a child gain a better understanding of money. "A children's book such as 'The Penny Pot' would be an appropriate gift for young readers," said Davis, a contract holder himself. "For older children, 'Money Sense for Kids' might be a good choice." For more information, visit www.529prepaidtuition.org/gift or call 877-877-3724 for program information, materials and enrollment guidelines.

oday's economy isn't just frustrating for those without jobs - limited budgets can do a number on employed workers' morale as well. Exemplary employees might not be awarded with raises, no matter how much effort they put

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board of Directors welcomes you to attend the following VTA Board of Directors public meeting: Thursday, December 9................ 9:00 a.m. Board Meeting Board of Supervisors’ Chambers County Government Center 70 W. into their projects. Employers unable to afford larger salaries may see their best employees looking elsewhere. But some companies are finding a way to keep employees happy by cultivating employee-friendly office cultures. For example, in the fall of 2010, Washington, D.C.'s Office of the Chief Technology Officer implemented a Results Only Work Policy (ROWE), which pays employees for results, not the hours that they work. This means that employees are able to work when or wherever they want, so long as their work gets done. In places where it has been tried, ROWE not only boosts morale and retention, but also improves output. Of course, not every company is willing to redo its entire work structure. That doesn't mean that they can't find less drastic ways to boost morale. Here are some of the many ways that companies can make the workplace more attractive for employees: * Acknowledge employees' contributions. Employees who work hard without recognition are likely to lose morale. Even if a company can't provide raises, managers can give out certificates or plaques acknowledging an employee's accomplishments or designating an employee of the month. Plaquemaker Plus, a company that offers many personalized trophies, plaques and frames, offers laser-engraved and full-color plaques that can be used to give hard-working employees a boost. Visit their website at www.PlaquemakerPlus.com or call 1-800-367-5556. * Celebrate birthdays. Acknowledging employees' personal lives will make them feel like valuable team members, rather than replaceable automatons. * Communicate. Unhappy employees are less productive, so managers should take time to speak with them about questions or concerns. An anonymous employee survey can also help employers determine where they need improvement.

Five steps toward recovery for small business owners long-standing relationship with a bank can take full advantage of its products and services as well as bring a proven track record to help the bank make credit decisions. 5. Stand out with customer service. It's a complaint you hear from all quarters these days - no one seems to care about customer service anymore. Caring about customers and treating them with respect can help ensure they keep coming back to your business. Teach employees how to provide excellent customer service, and make sure you lead by example. In addition to courteous, prompt

(ARA) mall business owners have been hearing about the economic recovery for months. Yet for many entrepreneurs, the improving macro-economic data has yet to reveal itself in their daily lives and businesses - and many are wondering when they'll see it in their corner of the economy.

S

Nonetheless, as a small business owner you can take steps to prepare for improving conditions and ensure your business recovers quickly. "Small business owners are essential players in the economy's overall recovery," says Raj Seshadri, head of small business banking at Citibank. "Fortunately, there is a lot that they can do to help their own businesses recover sooner, and to be poised to take advantage of emerging opportunities as the economy improves." Seshadri offers five tips for small business owners looking to take recovery into their own hands: 1. Keep track of all funds that come into or go out of your business on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. "It's surprising how much value business owners find when they focus on their expenditures and revenues," Seshadri says. Tracking expenses, sales, inventory and revenue is vital to good cash flow management and helps you grow your business. Knowing how much your business spends and how much it brings in each month gives you a true picture of just how well the company is performing. 2. Make the most of marketing, from advertising and public relations to special promotions, discounts and social media. When the economy suffers, it's more important than ever to continue marketing efforts, experts say. And marketing isn't always about spending money. Consider connecting with referrals using lowcost channels and experimenting in new areas - have your tried YouTube? Have you tried Social Networking? If you cut back on marketing but your competitors do not, you leave a void they can easily step into. Continuing marketing efforts through a downturn can help ensure your business is “front-of-mind when the economy improves and customers start spending more money. 3. Find a great financial advisor. Many small business owners turn to their accountants or their peers for advice. Some consult professionals, or network at their local chamber of commerce. Others rely on their small business banker. "Every community has advisors for small businesses," says Seshadri. "It's important to find an experienced, qualified advisor you can trust." 4. Find a great bank that will work with you. Business banking is about building relationships. A small business owner with a

service, consider showing customers your appreciation through special promotions and loyalty rewards programs. "Small business owners don't have to wait for the recovery to arrive; they can create their own recovery by taking the right steps toward improving their business operations," Seshadri says. Teens More Sexually Responsible Than Adults

T

hat’s the opinion of Robert Fai (www.bobdanierla.c om), an expert who has seen the ravages of AIDS in Africa and around the world, and is encouraged by a new study that shows how increased awareness can result in better personal responsibility. Released only a few weeks before World Aids Day on December 1, the Indiana University survey of more than 5,000 people -- more than 800 of them under 18 -discovered that nearly 80 percent of all teens use condoms when they have sex, compared to their adult counterparts aged 25 and up who use condoms

fewer than 20 percent of the time. “As startling as those statistics may be for Americans, it sends a strong message to the global community trying to fight AIDS,” said Fai, author of the novel Habiba, My Habiba (written under the pseudo Bob Danierla); a fictional account of life and romance in the AIDS ravaged countries in Africa. “In the U.S., many public entities are driving the message home to teenagers to use condoms regularly, and the outreach is working. In other parts of the world, like Africa, the lack of sex education and the overriding culture have prevented that

message from penetrating.” According to the Health Protection Agency, the two groups most affected by HIV include gay and bisexual men and black African heterosexuals. Three-quarters of people diagnosed were between these two groups. Fai believes that education, plus a greater emphasis on family, are the two best weapons in the global fight against the disease. “Millions of people all over the world are still about to die from this disease, either because of ignorance, poverty or both,” Fai said. “Sheer human recklessness, greed, poverty and irresponsibility are taking

away lives. I have heard people declare they cannot be affected only to see them die soon afterwards. While all doors must be kept open to unveil the obscene human behavior that is facilitating this societal misfortune, individuals must first and foremost examine themselves as the first step in this direction. This is where the family, as a social unit, becomes an invaluable asset in the worldwide fight against HIV and AIDS.” That’s why Fai, who has a Master’s Degree in public policy and works for a not-for-

profit advocacy group in Virginia, chose to use a novel instead of a non-fiction approach to educate people because he felt the message might sink in better if he told a story instead of reciting statistics. “Sometimes messages resonate with people when they are told anecdotally instead of empirically,” Fai added. “We’ve all seen the stats, and while that approach may work in much of the industrialized world, I think in other areas of the globe, it’s less a matter of data than it is a matter of cul-

ture. In some cultures around the world, it’s difficult to penetrate through a belief system with a message that flies in the face of that belief system. AIDS hits these countries hard, because many are unwilling to change their beliefs, even in the face of the data. That’s why a story might be more effective, and as we continue to lose the fight against AIDS in the developing world, I think we need to use every weapon we have in order to change minds, and yes, maybe even cultures.”

The Truth about Women And Chronic Pain (NewsUSA) n estimated 50 million Americans suffer from at least one form of pain, and too often, health care professionals cannot give a reason or solution for their symptoms. The pain some women experience can be so debilitating, it can even make sitting a hardship. About 14 million women will develop a chronic pain disorder called vulvodynia in their lifetime. It is the recurring discomfort to the vulva (area surrounding the vaginal opening). Like many other chronic pain disorders, vulvodynia is misunderstood, because, many times, there are no visible signs of the condition, which can make it difficult for healthcare providers to diagnose. Women are often told that their pain "is all in their head." As a result, many women suffer in embarrassing silence, while others who seek medical care cannot get a proper diagnosis. Once thought to affect primarily Caucasian women, recent studies indicate that African American and Hispanic women are just as likely to develop vulvodynia. A Harvard University study found that 60 percent of vulvodynia sufferers consulted at least three doctors for diagnosis. These results demonstrate just how critical it is to be persistent in seeking medical care for vulvodynia and the importance of being your own advocate. The cause of vulvodynia is still unclear to

A

health care professionals. Vulvodynia is not caused by cancer, infections or sexually transmitted diseases. The most common symptoms of vulvodynia are burning, stinging, irritation and pain. These symptoms can be constant, or they may come and go. If chronic pain is left untreated, problems can continue for months or years with no resolution. There is no single specific treatment plan that works for every woman with chronic pain. Experts often recommend an individualized plan that includes a combination of treatments. To get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, women suffering from vulvodynia and other types of chronic pain should learn as much as they can about the condition. For more information on vulvodynia and local support groups contact the National Vulvodynia Association (www.nva.org). The NVA's resources can help women with vulvodynia better understand the condition and improve their ability to discuss it with their healthcare professional. Women should be involved in their own treatment plan, and advocate for the care they need. Santa BĂĄrbara “protectora espiritualâ€? Por Mario JimĂŠnez El Observador

KRISTI YAMAGUCHI

DOWNTOWN ICE

E
