as transiciones del hogar al preescolar y del preescolar al Kinder son tanto significativas e importantes, como emotivas y estresantes, ya que durante estos períodos los niños, sus padres, y el personal escolar encaran situaciones nuevas y desafiantes.

n junio de este año una encuesta de Bendixen y Asociados comisionada por America’s Voice concluyó que los hispanos confiaban más en Barack Obama que en los demócratas del Congreso para “hacer lo correcto” en el tema de la reforma migratoria.

Según la encuesta, “83% cree que Obama “hará lo correcto” en el frente migratorio; 69% cree que los demócratas harán lo correcto; y sólo 23% cree que los republicanos harán lo correcto”.

Como candidato presidencial, Obama prometió concretar esa reforma este año, pero ya indicó que será hasta principios del año entrante cuando se inicie el debate citando todos los asuntos que hay sobre la mesa: salud, energía, y reformas financieras, entre otros.

Entre ciertos sectores de la comunidad latina e inmigrante hay descontento con la administración Obama, con el DHS que dirige Napolitano y con el Congreso, primero por el retraso en abordar el tema migratorio, pero también porque el gobierno se ha dedicado a reforzar y ampliar programas centrados en la aplicación de leyes migratorias. Ha permitido, por ejemplo, que el alguacil Joe Arpaio, de Arizona, siga aplicando el programa 287(g) en el condado de Maricopa, a pesar del uso de perfiles raciales y otras prácticas discriminatorias.

De acuerdo con la encuesta de Bendixen hace un par de meses, 72% de los hispanos creía que Obama cumpliría con su promesa de avanzar legislación sobre la reforma migratoria en el primer año de su presidencia, mientras 17% opinó que Obama rompería su promesa, y 11% respondió que no sabía. Δ

Back to School: The Green Way

A

s your county supervisor, I have taken an environmental focus by introducing new Environmental Stewardship Goals. We have created the Cortese Climate Kids Club (for information about how your children can join, visit my website at www.supervisorcortese.org). Being environmentally responsible is something everyone should strive for, and this includes getting the kids ready to go back to school. Normally the approach is routine: ensuring their clothes fit and are clean and presentable, checking the backpack to make sure it can carry another year’s worth of textbooks, and heading to the office supply store to pick up any school supplies that they need. This year, I encourage you to take a look at how you can make going back to school more environmentally friendly. One of the easiest changes to make would happen when you prepare your kid’s lunches. While the average person doesn’t think about where waste goes after the garbage man picks it up, our waste is a serious issue with landfills running out of space and contaminants leaking out of the landfills that we do have. A straightforward way to be more environmentally friendly is to simply use reusable containers and utensils for your kid’s lunches.

Brown paper bags, while not completely unfriendly, still add volume to our waste stream.

A better method is to use a reusable lunch bag or pail and put the sandwiches or leftovers in a reusable container that they can bring home to

reuse. Also, include a set of metal spoons and forks to eat with. While single use plastic items do have some benefits for specific circumstances, teach your kids to think about their impact on the environment by explaining to them why it is better to bring the reusable containers and utensils home every night rather than throwing more plastic and bags into the garbage.

Due to their nature, school supplies such as paper and pencils can only be used once. But you can minimize the harm to the environment through buying recycled content items and ensuring that after they have served their useful life, they are recycled. Recycled paper, notebooks and folders are becoming commonplace, but there are two key points to keep in mind when purchasing them; recycled content is good, but post-consumer recycled content is even better, and secondly, be sure to keep the cycle going and put the used products in the proper recycling bin.

Pens and pencils that are refillable are also better for the environment since you can reuse these writing tools by just filling it up with more ink or lead instead of throwing the entire unit away when its usefulness ends.

Solar calculators have been around for years and have very real benefits. They can be used for many school years without needing battery replacements since they don’t use batteries. That means less toxic battery chemicals that need special handling to be recycled. You

already know you’re not supposed to throw batteries in the trash, right?

Lastly, this is the perfect time to get in the habit of walking or biking with your kid to school. Not only will you save money, gas and reduce the pollution you create, but you will also improve your health through increased aerobic activity. At the same time you are demonstrating to your child on the important benefits of being active. It’s a win-win.

These are just a few ideas, but I’m sure that there are many more that you can think of. They don’t just apply to getting kids ready to go back to school. These tips can easily be transferred to working professionals, college students, and many others. For example, my office was recently certified as a “Green Business” by the Association of Bay Area Government’s Green Business Program (www.greenbiz.abag.ca.gov) for conserving energy and water, minimizing waste, preventing pollution and shrinking our carbon footprint. Even if you can’t make all these changes, just trying a few and thinking about what else you can do while involving your child in making the effort will make a world of a difference, no pun intended.

Festival Connects Residents and Businesses

owntown San Jose residents and local business organizations gathered on Saturday, August 15 at Roosevelt Park to create awareness of the goods and services offered in downtown San Jose.

“We are here because we have a committed group of business people and local residents who want to see this neighborhood come together,” said Sam Liccardo, Councilmember for San Jose’s District 3.

Liccardo went on to say that the community is working on providing landscaping and on developing anti-graffiti programs. He also encouraged residents to visit and use the new community center located at Roosevelt Park.

“Please use our new center,” Liccardo said.

“There are many things to do.”

The festival was collaboration between the Business Association, the San Jose Redevelopment Agency and the City of San Jose.

One of the local businesses available at the event was Walgreens.

“We are here to provide the community with information on the flu shots that will be available at Walgreens,” said Orlando Cuesta, a manager at the Walgreens located on 17th and Santa Clara

Streets.

“The shots will be available starting September 1 and will continue to be available until March of next year.”

There are several options for residents to pay for their flu shots.

“Some people can have their insurance companies pay for their flu shots,” Cuesta said.

Cuesta added that he was not sure how many people will want the flu shots but that Walgreens was ready to provide the shots for all those that need them.

Established in 1984 as a Neighborhood Business District, East Santa Clara Street features a diverse collection of nearly 200 restaurants and shops and neighborhood services, including specialty food and clothing stores, pharmacies and public health services. To revitalize the neighborhood-serving retail area, the San Jose Redevelopment Agency works with the Business Association and its members by providing funding and technical support in business development.

The East Santa Clara Neighborhood Business Districts is one of eight Neighborhood Business Districts (NBD) located in a Redevelopment Project Area. To date, the San Jose Redevelopment Agency has invested more than $280 million in the NBDs including more than $19

eter Arellano (MD) es un reconocido Doctor en Medicina Familiar que por ahora ha dejado las salas médicas para ser parte de los despachos del concejo municipal de la ciudad de Gilroy.

Desde hace nueve años viene trabajando como funcionario de esta ciudad y hoy se encuentra en su cuarto periodo manejando a una ciudad donde recientemente se ha incrementado los problemas de violencia.

Hace unas semanas anunció que se postula para el puesto de Supervisor por el Distrito 1. De ser elegido estaría reemplazando a Don Gage cuyo periodo culmina a fines de 2010.

El Dr. Arellano nació en el Hospital Valley Medical Center en San José. Es hijo de padre mexicano y madre americana y se crió en una familia que básicamente hablaba el español. A pesar de haber nacido en este país, la oportunidad de hablar un segundo idioma fue importante en el núcleo familiar.

“Ser bilingüe no es solo importante para un político sino para cualquier persona que pueda extender sus servicios a otras comunidades o desee crecer a nivel personal”, explica Arellano.

Tanto la carrera de funcionario público así como la carrera médica son aparentemente diferentes, sin embargo son carreras que están enlazadas a una comunidad. El servicio es el principio básico y el Doctor Arellano desea continuar con esta misión a la cual ha sido llamado.

“Desde el lado de la política puedo servir a mi comunidad. Tengo experiencia en la atención de salud. Conozco la situación por dentro ahora me toca manejar asuntos por fuera”, dijo el galeno.

El Dr. Arellano ofrece una larga experiencia, además considera que en tiempos de crisis es importante buscar otras maneras de conseguir fondos más no recortar programas que afecten a la familia.

El Distrito 1 cuenta con una gran número de parques y areas abiertas además de tierras agrícolas. Actualmente cuenta con una población de 330,000 habitantes y abarca el 70 por ciento de la superficie terrestre del Condado de Santa Clara.

El Valle de Almadén, Santa Teresa, y el Valle de Blossom Hill, Gilroy, Los Gatos, Morgan Hill, San Martín, así como Mt. Hamilton y algunas partes de las Montañas de Santa Cruz pertenecen al Distrito 1.

Students Receive Backpacks

W

ith school around, and the economy in a recession, low-income families throughout Santa Clara County are beginning to look for ways to get the necessary school supplies for the upcoming school year.

Fortunately, the Sacred Heart Community organization is making an effort to help these families with its annual Pack-a-Back program. The event was held on Friday, August 14, in which over 1,700 backpacks filled with school supplies were handed out.

“All the backpacks and all the school supplies are new,” said Todd Madigan of Sacred

Heart Community Service. “The supplies in the backpacks were based on the grade of the student. We have backpacks for students who are entering kindergarten, to students who are entering the twelfth grade.

The students received notebooks and USB memory sticks.

“They also received a 20 dollar gift certificate towards a pair of new shoes,” Madigan said.

Registration for the event was held on July 29 and Madigan said that people lined up for blocks to register for the backpacks and school supplies.

“I went up to the first people in line and asked them what time they arrived to register and they told me they showed up at three in the morn-

ing,” Madigan said. “That just shows you how important these types of event are to people.”

Madigan added that the registration for the backpacks reached over 1,700 in three hours.

Community members and organizations donated the supplies and the backpacks.

“Religious groups and Boys and Girls clubs were some of the organizations that donated,” Madigan said. “This event gets bigger every year.”

In addition, several community members volunteered their time to make sure the event went smoothly.

“We have about 150 volunteers a day for our regular programs,” Madigan said. “We’re going to have an additional 120 volunteers for this par-

ticular event.”

Aside from the distribution of backpacks and school supplies, there were also information and activity tables from JobLink, Mesa Verde and Policy and Advocacy. There were also balloons, snacks and activities for the children to take advantage of while waiting to enter the learning center.

En mayo de 1999, el DMV empezó a expedir recibos con foto como parte de un pro-

ceso nuevo para fotos de licencias de manejar y tarjetas de identificación. Un cliente que todavía necesita tomar exámenes adicionales en una oficina del DMV recibirá un recibo con foto. Este es usado para identificar al cliente mientras que está en una oficina del DMV y su aplicación está en progreso. It’s Back to School Time for SamTrans

wenty-six percent of SamTrans riders are under 18.

Clearly, young people have discovered that SamTrans is the safe, convenient, affordable, “green” way to get around. And now that summer is nearly over, SamTrans is ready to take students back to school.

Ordenan pagar a taqueria que no dejó que madre amamante bebé ELK GROVE, California l Departamento de Igualdad en el Empleo y Vivienda de California (DFEH) anunció hoy que el propietario de Acosta Tacos, Jesús Acosta, ha sido ordenado pagar $46,645.00 por daños en un caso de discriminación de embarazo en el empleo, el caso fue procesado por el DFEH ante la Comisión de Igualdad de Empleo y Vivienda (Comisión).

Después de dos días de audiencia, la Comisión, en una decisión precedente, encontró que el despido de Marina Chávez por Acosta Tacos porque ella insistió en su derecho a regresar a trabajar, y en su derecho a amamantar a su bebé, violó el Acta de Igualdad en el Empleo y Vivienda (FEHA) la cual prohíbe la discriminación sexual.

“La Sra. Chávez sufrió una grave violación de sus derechos civiles que no se tolera en California,”dijo la Directora del DFEH, Phyllis Cheng. “La FEHA garantiza a un empleado que toma licencia por discapacidad de embarazo el derecho a regresar a su antiguo puesto cuando termina la licencia. Es inconcebible que una madre trabajadora sea penalizada por la necesidad de alimentar a su bebé recién nacido, la ley se aseguro de que sus derechos sean protegidos.”

Chávez trabajaba como cajera para Acosta Tacos desde 2004, en Octubre del 2006 Chávez supo que estaba embarazada y debido a un parto prematuro empezó su discapacidad por su embarazo el 30 de Abril del 2007. El 30 de Mayo del 2007, Chávez intentó regresar al trabajo, pero Jaime Acosta le dijo que no podía porque su puesto había sido cubierto. El 1 de Junio y luego de nuevo el 2 de Junio, Chávez fue llamada a trabajar para cubrir el turno de un empleado ausente. Al darse cuenta el 2 de Junio que Chávez había amaman-

tado a su bebé en su carro durante su descanso la noche anterior, Jaime Acosta le dijo a Chávez que no la quería trabajando mientras ella estuviera lactando - un hecho que admitió en la audiencia de la Comisión. Cuando Chávez protestó que necesitaba volver inmediatamente a su puesto de trabajo para mantener a su familia, Acosta le dijo que no le gustaba su actitud, que ya no la necesitaba, y la despidió.

Al encontrar al empresario responsable de discriminación sexual, represalias y por no evitar la discriminación, la Comisión ordenó a Jesús Acosta pagarle a Marina Chávez $21,645.00 por sus salarios perdidos, más $20,000.00 para compensar su sufrimiento emocional. Asimismo, la Comisión ordenó a Acosta, pagar al Fondo General del Estado una multa administrativa de $5,000.00, desarrollar una póliza escrita en Inglés y Español que prohíba la discriminación sexual y por embarazo en el empleo, entrenar a todos los empleados y supervisores sobre la póliza, y colocar un aviso que declare que la Comisión encontró que la empresa violó la FEHA y que le ordenó pagar daños y perjuicios.

Senate Passes Safe Surrender Baby Bill

ACRAMENTO - The state Senate Appropriations Committee tonight approved Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico’s (D-Fremont) bill to give mothers 30 days to safely surrender a baby to a designated facility. The bill, AB 1048, was approved 9-3. It would extend the current 72-hour deadline. It next goes to the Senate floor.

The Safe Surrender law went into effect in 2001. Parents who are unable or unwilling to care for their newborn have 72 hours from the time of birth to surrender their baby to a designated facility like a hospital or fire station. Thirty states provide more than 72 hours.

To increase accessibility to the program, AB 1048 would also allow the governing boards of fire district agencies to designate Safe Surrender sites.

“By giving mothers more than just 72 hours to make this extremely important decision, I believe we can save the lives of babies around the state,” Torrico said. “We should listen to the experts in public safety and the medical community who strongly favor this legislation.”

AB 1048 is endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians

and Gynecologists, California Medical Association, California Psychiatric Association, California Professional Firefighters, California Fire Chiefs Association, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, the California Catholic Conference and several child abuse councils from throughout California.

A 2008 state audit found that over 400 babies have been illegally abandoned since 2001 and more than 250 babies have been safely surrendered during that same span. Some of the barriers to surrendering a baby within the 72-hour limit include fewer Safe Surrender designated sites in rural and remote areas. Only half of California’s counties have designated fire stations as Safe Surrender facilities. Fire stations cannot be designated if they are not staffed 24 hours a day.

Another problem is insufficient funding has contributed to a lack of public awareness about the law. To address this issue, Majority Leader Torrico is carrying legislation, AB 1049, to allow taxpayers to check-off a box on their income tax return forms to voluntarily fund Safe Surrender outreach efforts. AB 1049 was put on the Appropriations Committee’s suspense file to be considered later this session.

espués del 12 de junio millones han tenido que pasar a la televisión digital pero tal cómo habíamos anunciado en nuestra primera edición del año 2009 ¿Qué va a pasar con los televisores antiguos

que ahora son basura electrónica?. ¿Sabía usted que los televisores no se pueden botar al basurero así no más?. Usted tiene que llevarlo a sitios especiales, pagar para desahacerse o entregarlo a centros especiales de recojo.

El Condado de Santa Clara por ejemplo ha dispuesto un lugar determinado para recoger esta basura electrónica el primer sábado de cada mes. Usted tiene que acudir a este lugar y entregarlo en un horario determinado.

Ahora sin tener que moverse de su casa, o pagar un taxi alguien va a pasarlo a recoger el próximo 29 de de Agosto.

VTA anuncia aumento de pasajes

a organización PETA, defensora de los animales pidió al Alcalde Chuck Reed detener la crueldad a los animales evitando el regreso del circo Ringling Brothers a San José.

La organizacion pidió que sea la ultima vez que pase por San José.

PETA argumentó que los animales son abusados, física y mentalmente.

La organización mostró un video en el cual se aprecia a los empleados del circo usando metales para azotar a los animales y los maltratan antes de salir a cualquier presentación.

Según la organización PETA los empleados pegan a los animales en el rostro o cerca al rostro.

Miembros de PETA protestaron durante la función nocturna que tuvo lugar el pasado 19 de agosto. El grupo también ha establecido sus quejas al Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos y Servicio Fauna y Marina.

“Nuestra investigación ofrece una prueba más de lo que hemos sostenido siempre: Ringling regularmente intimida, golpea, propina látigos a los elefantes y a tigres para que realice trucos que son confusas y sin sentido para ellos e incluso doloroso”, dice el Vice Presidente de PETA, Tracy Reiman . “Esta crueldad no debe seguir en San José, y pedimos al alcalde a que adopte una postura en contra de ella.”

an José, California -La mesa directiva de Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) aprobó ace lerar los aumentos de tarifas para empezar en octubre del 2009, en vez de enero del 2010 con el fin de ayudar al descenso del dinero recaudado por los impuestos de las ventas.

Acelerar el aumento de tarifas también incluye los cambios a las tarifas de paratránsito, servicios de paratránsito, y opciones en las citas. Se espera que este cambio en la propuesta generará aproximadamente un millón de dólares. La mesa directiva aprobó el aumento de tarifas la junta que se llevó acabo en junio del 2009 cuando autorizaron el presupuesto del año fiscal 2010 y 2011.

“Ningún miembro de la mesa directiva de VTA toma esta decisión sin haberlo pensado bien,” dijo la Directora de la mesa directiva de VTA, y miembro del Concejal de Cupertino, Dolly Sandoval. “Comprendemos lo difícil que es económicamente para nuestros pasajeros, pero también la agencia tiene muchas necesidades a causa del bajón económico que existe.

Durante las discusiones de presupuestos que hubo en la primavera, el plan económico propuesto fue presentado a cinco comités de asesora de VTA. El comité de asesora de la póliza de VTA, que consiste de 16 concejales que representan ciudades del condado de Santa Clara, y que recomendaron que sí cambiaran las tarifas tres meses antes de la fecha que empezara el déficit del presupuesto. En la junta de la mesa directiva de junio, la mesa pidió un estudio para la junta que se llevaría acabo en agosto.

Muchas agencias por todo el estado de California han tenido que implementar aumento en las tarifas y reducir servicio como

consecuencia que el estado no ha proveído ningunos fondos económicos para el transito, al igual que ha habido descenso en los impuestos asociados con las ventas. Durante el tercer cuarto del año fiscal 2009, los recibos de los impuestos de las ventas bajaron a un 21 por ciento, y esto representó una perdida de 5.8 millones de dólares. El presupuesto de VTA que se espera es de una perdida del 8 por ciento durante la misma época. La última baja causa que el presupuesto tenga un déficit más fuerte y que VTA haya estado trabajando fuertemente durante los últimos meses para encontrar un balance. En junio, había un déficit de 30 millones. Con las últimas pérdidas en los meses recientes, hay ahora hay una perdida de 36 millones de dólares.

“El Estado ya no ha dado fondos para el transporte publico, y las ventas de los impuestos de las ventas han bajado bastante durante la recesión,” dijo Michael T. Burns, Gerente General de VTA. “Hemos implementado muchas estrategias para ahorrar dinero, sin embargo necesitamos que ver otras formas de agregar dinero para el déficit en el presupuesto que aun esta creciendo.”

VTA es una de las muchas agencias incluyendo BART, SFMTA, AC Transit, Caltrain, y SamTrans que han aumentado sus tarifas en respuesta a que la economía esta mal. Los aumentos en tarifas para adultos por un viaje, consisten de pagar en vez de $1.75 ahora será $2, y los aumentos será proporcionales a estos cambios en los pases de día y del mes. Para el paratransito el viaje sencillo subirá de $3.50 a $4. VTA continuara ofreciendo el servicio exclusivo en el cual los pasajeros están dispuestos a pagar parte del costo. El Eco-Pass subirá por un 20 por ciento.

Y los aumentos de tarifas empiezan el 1 de octubre del 2009.

Immigration Reform: Can It be Just and Humane?

veryone has an opinion on what should and should not be included in an immigration reform package that President Barack Obama has said would be introduced by the end of this year or early next year.

On Wednesday, August 19, three community leaders gathered at the Martin Luther King Jr. library in San Jose to discuss what they believe a new immigration reform package should include. These leaders were Bill Hing, a Professor of Law and Asian American Studies, David Bacon, a prize-winning Bay Area photojournalist, and Richard Hobbs, an immigration attorney and long-time champion of human, civil and immigrant rights. All three

speakers spoke about their “top ten” suggestions that should be included in immigration reform.

There were several issues that all the speakers agreed upon. One was the issue of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“So much of immigration is forced immigration,” said David Bacon. “We need to find ways to help the economies of countries like Mexico develop so that the people would not have to leave in order to survive.”

Another suggestion was the elimination of guest worker programs.

“These programs exploit people and tell them they have to work in order to stay here,” Bacon said. “They make people feel like they are not part of the community.”

Richard Hobbs agreed with Bacon and added, “We need to protect U.S. and immigrant worker and human rights. We should focus enforcement on real threats like terrorists and unscrupulous employers, and most importantly, provide a path to citizenship for 12 million undocumented immigrants.”

Finally, the speakers talked about the issue of family unification.

“Many families are broken apart because of our immigration policy,” Bill Hing said. “We need to expand our visa programs so that families stay together.”

Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN) sponsored the event and has developed a five principles guide what is needed to address the immigration issue.

These include: an earned path to legalization for undocumented workers and students, eliminating visa backlogs that keep families apart, giving all workers equal protection under the law, integrating immigrants into American society, and ensuring that all basic human rights are protected.

¿Qué debe tener la Reforma Migratoria?

odos están a la espera de una reforma, pero también están con ansias de saber qué incluir dentro del paquete de una reforma cuya demora está siendo cada vez más notoria que nunca.

El pasado 19 de agosto se llevó a cabo un diálogo entre tres especialistas de este tema. Bill Hing, Profesor en Leyes y Estudios Asiáticos, David Bacon reconocido periodista y galardonado por su trabajo de investigación y Richard Hobbs, Director Interino de SIREN y abogado de inmigración.

Los tres oradores hablaron sobre las 10 sugerencias básicas que deben ser incluídas en una reforma migratoria.

Uno de los asuntos en el cual estuvieron de acuerdo los

oradores fue el tema del Acuerdo de Libre Comercio en el Norte de América (NAFTA).

“Mucho de la inmigración ha obligado a la inmigración.

Tenemos que encontrar formas de ayudar a las economías de países como México a desarrollar para que la gente no salga de su país y busque sobrevivir”, dijo David Bacon.

Otra sugerencia fue la eliminación de los programas de trabajadores huéspedes.

“Estos programas son una forma de explotación y dicen que para mantenerse en este país tienen que trabajar “, explica Bacon. “Ellos hacen sentir a la gente que no son parte de la comunidad.”

Richard Hobbs, coincidió con Bacon y añadió: “Tenemos que proteger a EE.UU. y los trabajadores inmigrantes y los

ANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF- For a limited time, the Santa Clara County Department of Child Support Services is offering parents with their driver’s license suspended for non-payment of child support an opportunity to get it restored. The “Get Back on the Road Again”public awareness program is available to parents with child support cases in all California counties. It’s a collaborative effort of the California State Department of Child Support Services, the Child Support Directors Association, and the local child support agencies in each of the California Counties.

“We invite parents who have not fulfilled their child support obligations to take advantage of this opportunity to reinstate their driver’s license,” said Ralph Miller, Director of Santa Clara County’s Department of Child Support Services. “This program will allow them to legally get back on the road without the concern of not being able to find a job or drive a car because their license has been suspended.”

The “Get Back on the Road Again” Program is available on specific dates at each local child support agency throughout California during August 2009. In addition to normal business hours, Santa Clara County’s Child Support Office will be open on Saturday, August 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to assist parents wishing to have their license restored.

“We want to assist the non custodial parent who may be having a tough time financially but wants to support his or her children,” said John Vartanian, Chief Attorney of the local child support agency. “After a case review, and for a limited time, Child Support Services Program staff will release a driver license to non custodial parents who meet the program’s criteria.”

To benefit from this program, parents owing child support need to meet the following conditions: • Make a payment equal to one month of their child support obligation, • Make an additional payment of at least $50 toward arrears, • Provide his or her current employment status and if applicable provide information regarding his or her current financial situation.

Evaluations will be done on a case-by-case basis. Parents interested in participating in the“Get Back on the Road Again”program should visit the California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) website at www.childsup.ca.gov for specific dates and locations. Santa Rosa de Lima “patrona de la buena salud” Por Mario Jiménez Castillo El Observador anta Rosa nació en Lima, Perú en 1586. Fue la “primera santa canonizada” del continente americano. Auque fue bautizada con el nombre de Isabel, le llamaban cariñosamente Rosa y ése fue el nombre que le impuso en la confirmación el arzobispo de Lima, Santo Toribio. Se cree que en su adolescencia padeció la pena de un amor mal correspondido. Años mas tarde ingresó a la tercera orden de Santo Domingo, a partir de entonces se recluyó en una cabaña que había construido en el huerto de su casa. Experimentó fenómenos paranormales y según relata los historiadores versados en el tema, podía realizar curaciones milagrosas con tan solo tocar a los enfermos. En ese entonces una comisión de médicos y religiosos examinaron a la santa, dictaminando que ella verdaderamente experimentaba experiencias sobrenaturales. El modo de vida y las prácticas ascéticas

de la santa siempre llamaron la atención de otros religiosos, en ocasiones se le cuestionaba sobre el hecho de las curaciones que ella realizaba, ella contestaba que era el poder de Dios quién obraba al observar la fe de los fieles.

Santa Rosa vivió una vida plena espiritualmente. En plena juventud partió de este mundo el día 24 de agosto de 1617, a los 31 años de edad. Por todos sus méritos, misericordia con los desamparados y bondad hacia los enfermos, fue canonizada por el Papa Clemente X en 1671. A Santa Rosa se le pide para conservar la buena salud, curarse de males extraños, enfermedades prolongadas y sobreponerse de padecimientos emocionales.

La festividad a Santa Rosa de Lima se celebra en el Perú el 30 de agosto, además se le celebra en la iglesia universal el 23 de agosto.

Michael Jackson será sepultado el día de su cumpleaños en Los Angeles

os Angeles,(Notimex).- A casi dos meses de su muerte el cantante Michael Jackson será sepultado el próximo 29 de agosto en un cementerio de Los Angeles, justo el día en que cumpliría 51 años, anunció hoy aquí su padre, Joe Jackson.

La sepultura se realizará a las 10:00 horas locales en el cementerio Forest Lawn en Glendale, una comunidad a unos 30 kilómetros al norte del centro de Los Angeles y en donde han permanecido los restos del cantante, explicó.

La familia Jackson decidió posponer su sepultura en

espera de que concluyeran los exámenes toxicológicos y neuropatológicos que se realizaron en dos autopsias, en especial al cerebro del cantante el pasado 25 de junio.

El servicio forense no ha revelado los resultados finales de las autopsias en espera de que concluyan las investigaciones paralelas que realiza el Departamento de Policía de Los Angeles, así como la Agencia Antinarcóticos (DEA) y se especula podrían darse en los próximos días.

Joe Jackson indicó que el acuerdo de sepultar a “El Rey del Pop” en el día que cumpliría 51 años fue alcanzado en un acuerdo mutuo y en el que intervino toda la familia en reuniones privadas durante los últimos días.

Los restos de Michael Jackson permanecen congelados en un sitio especial del cementerio citado en donde finalmente reposaran y con ello quedará descartada la intención de su hermano Jermaine Jackson quien proponía fuera enterrado en su rancho Neverland en Santa Barbara, California.

as estadísticas prueban que los hispanos somos uno de los grupos más despreocupados en lo que respecta al cuidado preventivo de la salud. Como ejemplo, casi el 54%

de las mujeres hispanas mayores de 40 años no se han realizado una mamografía el último año, siendo el cáncer de mama la principal causa de muerte entre este grupo, con más de 1.700 fallecidas en el 2006.

Libérese del tabaco.

Realice actividad física. Si nunca ha hecho ejercicio comience de a poco y vaya avanzando hasta hacer 30 minutos o más de actividad física moderada al menos de lunes a viernes.

Coma sanamente. Concéntrese en frutas, verduras, granos enteros, leche y productos lácteos sin o con poca grasa. Incluya carne magra, aves, pescado, legumbres, huevos y frutos secos. Coma alimentos bajos en grasas saturadas, grasas trans, colesterol, sal y sin agregar azúcar.

Mantenga un peso adecuado. Mantenga un equilibrio entre las calorías que ingiere con los alimentos y bebidas y las que gasta en sus actividades.

Consumo de alcohol: Si toma alcohol, hágalo sólo con moderación. No tome más de un trago al día. Un “trago” equivale a una botella de 12 onzas de cerveza, un vaso de vino de 5 onzas o 1.5 onzas de licor destilado de 80 grados proof.

Cáncer de cuello de útero. Hágase Papanicolaou (“Pap”) cada 1 a 3 años si ha llevado una vida sexual activa. Si tiene más de 65 años y los Papanicolaou hechos antes de que cumpliera esa edad fueron normales, no necesita hacerse este estudio.

Cáncer colorrectal. Su médico lo ayudará a saber qué estudio le conviene hacerse.

Depresión. Su salud emocional es tan importante como su salud física. Si se ha sentido desanimada o triste. Hable con su médico sobre las pruebas para detectar la depresión.

Diabetes. Si tiene la presión arterial alta, hágase un análisis de sangre para detectar diabetes.

Earthquakes Sign Brazilian Defender Fabio da Silva

AN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has signed Brazilian defender Fabio da Silva. He will be available to play this Saturday, Aug. 22 against the Kansas City Wizards. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to add a player of the caliber of Fabio da Silva to our roster,” said General Manager John Doyle. “He can play the ball out of the back and is a solid defender. He will help strengthen our backline’s depth and add some good experience.”

Da Silva most recently played for Rio Branco in the Brazilian league and served as their captain, helping lead his side to a fourth-placen finish in 2009, his second stint with the club. Da Silva has played for a variety of clubs in both Brazil and Serbia. Along with Rio Branco (2009 and 2002), da Silva has spent time with Brazilian sides Clube Nautico Capibaribe (2008), Treze (2001), Campinense (2001), and Sport Club Recife (1997-2001). Clubs in Serbia that da Silva has represented during his career are; Napredak Krusevac (2007), Rad Belgrado (2002-

2005, 2007) and Red Star Belgrade (2005-2006).

Fabio da Silva’s accomplishments throughout his career include two junior championships with Sport Club Recife in 1997 and 1999. He also won an Acreano championship with Rio Branco in 2002, participated in the UEFA in 2005 with Red Star, won the Serbian championships in 2005-06 and 2006-07 with Red Star, and won the Serbian Cup in 2005 and 2006 as well.
