ur Founding Fathers were committed to the concept that there would be the separation of ‘Church’ and ‘State” for they w ere men of great faith in their God . In these times of great political and ec onomic stress, many individuals seek solace by praying to their God using prayers learned in religious studies. We have learned what we know about civic behavior, religion and God fr om the teachings, examples and prac tices of our families. Our par ents and other r elatives were our first role models and we’re responsible for teaching us what is‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’. Most of all each of us experienced the feeling of belonging, of securit y and safety within the bounds of our immediate family. We learned the Ten Commandments which enumerated the rules wher eby we could live in harmony. We could expect others to behave in a similar courteous and respectful manner as w e w ere taught. The outcome of these t eachings which began in the family is the c ollective ability to behave and communicate in a civil manner in the community. These days there seems to be no end to public behavior using manners which are not v ery civil at all . The violenc e experienced on our str eets wher e shootings , muggings, purse-snatching, and violation of women occur with great regularity. There seems to be a loss of perspec tive, respect, and self-esteem. The definition of‘good behavior’ is violated too many times by those who deem themselves to be ‘above the rule of law’. The many laws are the outcome of a major shif t fr om r eligion, and a belief in God, t o the ‘rule of la ws’ enac ted b y our elected officials at all levels of government. This past Easter Sunday, the subjec t of “God and C ounty’ was the t opic of ‘This Week with Christiane Aman pour’. The discussion covered many items of faith and belief which are essential to modern society and its go vernment. I t is time that mor e such discussion be air ed b y mainstr eam media for the initiation of thought and discussion by many of us. If God is good, then why do we seem to abandon the t eachings of human experience and behavior which each religion conveys to those who study and learn. While the first f our of the Ten Commandments

deal with our personal relationship to God, the next six are essential to having a society where each of us can expect and receive ‘civil beha vior’. Honor th y father and mother:; Thou shalt not k ill; Thou shalt not steal’, Thou shalt not commit adultery; ‘Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods; and Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife. One outcome of many broken families is that a child is taught by only one parent, usually the mother. Another is that the father figure is absent so that that role model of behavior is absent. An outcome of our current economy is that many families ‘make it’ by deciding to have both mother and father w ork. Again this leads to the lack of sufficient time to be the parental instructors and role models to one’s children. Why is this impor tant? It is because too many of us t oday do not ha ve those concepts which ha ve guided human be havior f or millennia. Today money is the god idol that man y worship. The focus on accumulation of money has cr eated many hardships on the working class. The rich are getting richer. M any ev en spend a bit of their money to influence elected officials to reduce their taxes. Today corporations and the very wealthy pay the lowest tax rates. That simply is not right and proper because many of their earnings are created using the infrastructure paid for by those of us who do pay our fair share of taxes. What our society needs now is more of ‘GOD’ and less of money. After all, the universe including the earth where we live was not created by human kind which exploits is abundance. In the past the v ery wealthy accepted responsibility of providing for those less fortunate by providing employment and sharing the bount y they possessed and c ontrolled. M any of t oday’s budget shor tfalls w ould be g reatly mitigated if the very wealthy and corporations balanced ‘profits and wealth creation’ with the sharing of enough wealth to assist the needy. The wealthy need to consider both “God and Country’. If we are to be a ‘Christian nation’ which prac tices religious freedom, then each of us needs t o c onsider what “God’ would ask us t o do today. The time is coming when we need to consider balancing our r oles in r e-establishing the role of ‘God’ in our American nation.∆

This center will focus on teaching Mexican art and culture to children, families, and the entire community. It is this information and education effort which is essential in development of an enthusiasm and understanding of the Hispanic participation in this community. We ask that you actively support this effort by becoming engaged , involved and committed. A first step is to demonstrate to the San Jose City Council, foundations and corporations that the East Side Community residents will support the proposed community School of Arts and Culture at the M exican Heritage Plaza.

This summer the M exican Heritage Plaza facility will be the sit e of a ‘summer camp’ for local community children. Your contributions will be evidence that you care and will support this vision.. (NewsUSA) espite conventional wisdom, the axiom "Y ou don't get something for nothing" isn't always true. It seems particularly untrue when college students pr ovide c ommunities with ser vices on a pr o bono or discounted basis in an effort to gain necessary experience. For example, many dental schools have their students provide check-ups to children from low-income communities who don't have a dentist. There are law schools that encourage students to offer pro bono legal services in the community to nonprofit organizations and low-income individuals who are in need. Students nearing graduation at DeVry University leave a positive mark on the regional community and provide a pro bono service through their Senior Project course. During a six-month period, students are charged with identifying a pr oject thr ough a pr ocess that asks them t o examine a local business or t echnical problem in the organizational context, develop a set of possible solutions and then select and implement the best solution. In one DeVry University Senior Projects class, teams selected either the I nglis Foundation, an organization devoted t o pr oviding independenc e t o the ph ysically disabled, or the New Brunswick Education F oundation, a project focused on helping nonpr ofit organizations ex-

Both teams implemented the management, technology and business concepts they learned in the classr oom t o impr ove the respective organizations' internal processes and increase fundraising. "Senior Projects provide DeVry University students with the oppor tunity t o c ontribute t o the c ommunity

while applying technical and business knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-world situations," said Forough Ghahramani, associate dean of DeV ry University's College of Business & Management. Elsewhere, local organizations partner with colleges to provide much-needed services to local residents. The Piton Foundation, a private foundation that helps low-income families in Colorado move out of poverty, offers free tax-filing services for qualifying families through its TaxHelp Colorado program. This year the foundation partnered with a DeVry University campus to help prepare returns. To be qualified to participate, the students trained for a month and passed the IRS certification test. "The services that DeVry University students provide are instrumental in eff ectively helping us ser ve the local community and help families c ollect their earned tax r efunds," said Diane DiGiac omo, communications director for the Piton Foundation. IRS Comienza la Ejecución de las Nuevas Reglas para Preparadores de Declaraciones de Impuestos WASHINGTON

E

n April 27, hundr eds of men par ticipated in this: "9th Annual Walk a M ile in Her Shoes” event to increase awareness of how sexual assault impacts individuals and families in the Silicon Valley by walking in woman's high heeled shoes. The YWCA Silicon Valley hosted this unique event during sexual assault awareness month to call attention to the statistics associated with sexual assault. “This is so wild. I’m in flats and the guys are in heels,” said Wendy Matthews of Marvell Semiconductors. “Let’s put a mile on those shoes.” The event brought together men and women to walk in heels from Plaza de Cesar Chavez through the streets of downtown San Jose. It is a light-hearted approach to a very serious subject which increases awareness of how sexual assault impacts individuals and families. "Walk a moment with me 20 years ago," said Michelle De la Calle, a rape survivor. "I thought I was going to die, but I made the decision to stay alive.” De la Calle was sexually assaulted and beaten at age 17. Now she is a proud survivor who reported the assault t o authorities. She no w shares her personal st ory to encourage other women to speak up. With support of family, friends and the YWCA, she continues to live life with her head held high. The men that walked in heels made donations . Proceeds support the YWCA's Rape Crisis Program along with other YWCA assault prevention services. “It should be known that even guys can make a change such as this” said Timothy War, participant. “It’s for my mom, sisters and niece. I don’t want anything to happen to them.”

New ad to fight the dangers of second hand smoke By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

O

n April 26, local officials introduced a new ad campaig n designed to expose the dangers of second hand smoke exposure in Santa Clara County. The ad campaig n is par t of Santa Clara’s County INSPIRE Tobacco Prevention initiative; a comprehensive effort to prevent y oung people fro m smok ing, help smokers quit, and re duces everyone’s exposure to second hand smoke. “The health care cost of treating tobacco in this c ounty alone is o ver $360 million,” said Super visor Ken Yeager, County of Santa Clara. ‘”Roughly 12 percent of that is related to individuals who do not smoke. “ The Project is funded by a grant from the U .S. Depar tment of Health and Human Services. Santa Clara C ounty is one of only 50 c ommunities in the nation, and one of just thre e c ounties in California, to receive these funds. At the core of the campaign is a powerful television commercial airing in English, Spanish and Vietnamese that graphically depicts the impact of second hand smoke on childr en. It also dramatizes the hazards faced by all nonsmokers exposed to others’ tobacco smoke. “This work is impor tant because it ’s about the health of our residents and it’s about the economic health of our region,” said M ayor Jason Baker , Cit y of Campbell. There was also discussion about the

efforts being made t o reduce the expo sure t o sec ond hand smoke thr ough tougher no smok ing policies in w orkplaces, parks, restaurants and multi-unit housing. “I think the t obacco industr y is still very powerful in tr ying to not have regulation of their t obacco products,” said Supervisor Yeager. There is no saf e level of exposure to secondhand smoke. It is a mixture of two forms of smoke that come from burning tobacco and smoke that is exhaled. Nonsmokers who bre athe in sec ond hand smoke take in nic otine and other t oxic chemicals just like smokers do. There are 250 toxic chemicals in t obacco smoke, with 50 of them c onsidered t o be canc er-causing agents . Second hand smoke causes 3,600 heart disease deaths and 400 lung canc er deaths each year in California non-smokers. “We have this incredible opportunity, because of the funding we received, to work to really put in ac tion some of the things we’ve been working on,” said retired physician Roger Kennedy of Santa Clara County Tobacco Free Coalition. “I’m really excited about the fact that now we have an enormous opportunity to take a very large step forward.” Protect your health and that of loved ones. Call the local Second hand Smoke Helpline at (408) 999-0500, if y ou have questions, concerns or complaints about secondhand smoke.

calcio, agrega la Dra. Aliza.
