n Saturday, Sept. 17, join 80,000 of your friends and neighbors for the state’s largest cleanup event! This year marks the 27th anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day and while hundreds of volunteers have already registered, more volunteers are needed. From 9 a.m. to noon, Santa Clara County volunteers are expected to fan out to 42 creek sites to clean up trash along the county’s waterways. Would-be volunteers can find a map of local cleanup sites at www.cleanacreek.org. Pre-registration is required at most sites. Individuals, clubs and classes are welcome to volunteer, as well as those looking to fulfill community service requirements. Locally, Coastal Cleanup Day is coordinated by the Creek Connections Action Group, a consortium of public agencies and non-profit organizations, including Santa Clara Valley Water District, Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation, and the City of San José. On Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors adopted a resolution to support the 27 th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. “Not everyone realizes the importance of these events, said Don Gage, chair of the

water district’s board of directors. “It’s a great way to come together to make a big impact on the health of our waterways. Last year, in Santa Clara County, 1,696 volunteers covered almost 93 miles of waterways and collected 29,843 pounds of trash and 7,955 pounds of recyclable materials. Statewide, nearly 83,000 volunteers removed more than 1.2 million pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events in the world. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and sunscreen and to bring their own pick-up sticks, trash bags, and gloves. First-aid supplies, water and refreshments will be provided at no cost.??For more volunteer information, Waiver of Liability forms and specific cleanup locations, please visit www.cleanacreek.org. All youth under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature on a Waiver of Liability form and will also need adult supervision for the entire event.

OPINION

A Multicultural Festival By Dave Cortese Supervisor, District 3, County of Santa Clara

I

would like to invite you to the Second Annual Day on the Bay: A Multicultural Festival. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, September 17th, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Alviso Marina County Park located near Mills Street in Alviso. What does multicultural mean to you? To me, it means a strong community; a community that values diversity and acceptance. By encouraging the spread of diverse ideas and accepting all people for who they are, the strength of humanity shines forth. I am privileged to live and work in a county that has these same values. As a result, whenever possible I organize community events that promote multiculturalism while providing resources to the residents of Santa Clara County. Held in partnership with the Santa Clara County Parks Department, Day on the Bay is a celebration that brings people together to enjoy activities rich in diversity and talent and abundant in ethnic expression. More than that, Day on the Bay is also an informational fair where the local community can meet non-profit, government, and community-based organizations to learn about their services. FREE hamburgers will be provided to attendees and FREE pumpkins for the kids (while supplies last). We will also have community groups providing ethnic food booths, arts and crafts and live entertainment. Additionally there will be fire trucks, an opportunity to look in Rural/Metro’s new blue and yellow ambulances, kayak trips in the Alviso Slough, girl and boy scout

troops, and much more. There will be two informational sections; the first will be focused on health and wellness. There will be free flu shots, blood pressure testing, and health education for youth and young adults, all intended to help motivate the community to make positives change in health behavior. Also, the Stanford Blood Center will be there with their bloodmobile to hold a blood drive. Additionally, there will be a section on green living. A variety of organizations will be on hand to teach you how easy it is to reduce your impact on the environment. With a backdrop of the San Francisco Bay, you can hear about native plant and organic home gardens, energy efficient measures for your home, the importance of water conservation and much more. This event will be free and open to the public, however if you would like to take a more involved role, we have many opportunities available. We have a few booth spaces still available for organizations that would be able to pass out important information to the attendees. We also have opportunities for local groups to provide entertainment during the event. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in any of these capacities, please ask them to contact Steve Blomquist in my office at 408-299-5030 or steven.blomquist@bos.sccgov.org. I hope you will be able to join me at this great event. There will truly be something for everyone. If you would like to learn more about Day on the Bay, please visit my website at www.supervisorcortese.org or contact me at 408-299-5030 or dave.cortese@bos.sccgov.org.

Game Changers 2012 By Hilbert Morales

Hmorales@el-observador.com

L

ast August 31st, at the Rotary Club, Carl Guardino, President and CEO, Silicon Valley Leadership Group (composed of 345 companies) presented a preview of projections which looks forward into the future of Silicon Valley’s micro economy and its jobs market. These projections will be presented by three panels at the Game Changers 2012 forum. Each panel is composed of leaders who will look ahead at trends and issues which impact Silicon Valley. These include governance, civic discourse, and innovation. All panels will discuss GAME CHANGERS 2012 and will focus on Silicon Valley’s Changing Economic Engine, Redefining Public Services, and Staying Competitive as a State and Nation. Guardino observed that ”Life is a partnership. And the partnership is led by those who make a difference. As a society, as governed and government, we are at a tipping point.” ”The eventual direction we will take by choice or by default will determine our future. The choices of goals and means require definition and content as they are the “game changers . Solutions will come from “Inspiration, Innovation, and Ideas.” ”They will necessarily be made at the speed of business. Jobs and unemployment are at the forefront as our biggest economic challenge.” ”A job begets other jobs, jobs produce wealth for the job-holders and that wealth produces taxes to sustain government. Change must come in the Tax Code, Education, Investment, Research and Efficiency.” In February 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Carl Guardino to a four-year term on the California Transportation Commission. Governor Jerry Brown reappointed him this year. He also serves on numerous other boards and is actively involved in a wide range of community organizations and projects. In 2000, the San Jose Mercury News named Guardino one of the ”Five Most Powerful” persons in Silicon Valley in a once-per-decade study. Guardino has been the chief executive of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group since 1997. He previously served as a vice president with the organization 1991 to 1995. A San Jose State graduate, he also held an executive position in governmental affairs with Hewlett-Packard. He spent six years on the staff of Central Valley Assemblyman Rusty Arias with the last three as his chief assistant. As publisher, I encourage all Latino leaders to attend this. Game Changers 2012 Forum on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: U lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. U treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. U improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: U have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. U have a heart condition U have liver problems U have kidney problems U are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?â€? U are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: U other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem U water pills (also called “diureticsâ€?) U potassium supplements U a salt substitute U Â˜ÂœÂ˜ĂƒĂŒiĂ€ÂœÂˆ`>Â?ĂŠ>Â˜ĂŒÂˆÂ‡ÂˆÂ˜vÂ?>““>ĂŒÂœĂ€ĂžĂŠ`ÀÕ}ĂƒĂŠÂ?ˆŽiĂŠÂˆLĂ•ÂŤĂ€ÂœviÂ˜ĂŠÂœĂ€ĂŠÂ˜>ÂŤĂ€ÂœĂ?i˜Ž Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? U Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. U For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. U If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child. U For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. U DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.

U If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. HEALTH

By Norma L. Molina Dietitian- Nutritionist

A

s a registered dietitian/nutritionist for 15 years, I have been working with overweight children and their families throughout the Santa Clara County, never imagining how much their healthy well being would be affected. I have been working with kids who already have adult health problems, including high cholesterol and triglycerides, pre-diabetes and even diabetes type 2. Sadly, the majority of those children are Latinos. The concern is not so much about their weight; the main concern is the alarming epidemic of pre-diabetes and diabetics experienced today. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 in 3 children born in 2000, and after, will develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetime. That estimate increases to 1 in 2 for Latino children! Many parents ask, “why is my child pre-diabetic or diabetic? One of many answers is their lifestyle; what they are eating and the physical activity they are not doing. It’s the environment they live in today as much as their genes that contribute to

their risk of developing diabetes and other chronic diseases. When conducting classes about the development and personal management of diabetes, I discuss the genes of our grandparents, great grandparents, and as far back as we can remember. How did most of them travel from one location to another? Did they go by car, take a taxi, or a bus? No, they walked. Every day they walked. How much do we walk today? We hardly walk everyday. How many hours did you play outdoors when you were your child’s age? Most say 3-4 hours or more every day. Today, the majority play less than 1 hour outdoors, if at all. Children’s physical activity is at its lowest. There are several reasons why, but focus on sedentary screen time in the homes, watching TV, video games, and computers. How many hours did you, or your grandparents, watch TV? Probably zero. How many TV’s are in your homes today? Most say one in each room, including the children’s rooms. This is a big challenge since our children would rather be indoors in front of a screen than to be actively playing outdoors with peers. As Latinos we

have the genes of a very physically active race, but we are no longer active, we are sedentary today. Consider how and what our grandparents ate. They ate home cooked meals with natural, fresh, unprocessed foods containing a good amount of fiber from sources like beans, vegetables, and fruits. Usually they drank only water, and very little, if any, sweetened beverages. Today we eat and drink the opposite of our grandparents. We as Latinos also have the genes of healthy eaters, but are eating less home cooked meals and too much processed foods, instead of beans, vegetables, & fruits; and drinking too much sugary drinks such as soda and juice, instead of water and milk. As a responsible parent help reduce the risk of your child developing diabetes by first clearing your home of all sweet drinks such as sodas, juices, flavored waters, and all sweets and white flour foods like cookies, pan dulce, chips, white bread, sugary cereals, etc. Have only water and milk in the home to drink, and eat fruits instead of drinking juices. Offer vegetables for snacks and/or meals every

day, instead of 2-3 days a week just in soups. The more you offer vegetables at home, the more opportunities your

child has to taste and eat them. And, just like our grandparents, eat beans at least 5 days a week; daily is even healthier. Secondly, remove the TV from your child’s bedroom. This makes it too convenient for your child to spend many hours watching TV indoors and less likely to go outdoors to play actively. To prevent diabetes type 2, one of the most important healthy lifestyle habits to develop is to be physically active every day. For children, this means playing at least 1 to 2 hours every day outdoors after school, especially since playing times at school are shorter. Latinos possess active and healthy eating genes, but we live in a toxic environment. This may be a factor for such high rates of pre-diabetes and diabetes type 2 amongst us. Do decrease the

risk of your child being the 1 in 2 Latino children who will develop diabetes type 2. Teach them to appreciate homemade natural, fresh, unprocessed foods, and to be physically active by playing outdoors every day. Become their role model just as your grandparents were yours. Learn as much as you can about diabetes type 2 to enable you to be able to detect it early and undertake sustainable prevention. You can start by attending the American Diabetes Association “Feria de Salud y Bienestar on Sunday, September 10, from 12pm to 5 pm at San Jose’s Berryessa Flea Market. nuestro paĂs, de nuestro querido MĂŠxico.

Balancing Higher Education as an Adult

P

to find the balance between work, family and education; others feel they are too overwhelmed by responsibilities to even consider pursuing a higher degree. However, options do exist. Online education is a great solution for working adults seeking an advanced degree. Online programs enable working adults to accommodate their busy schedules. However, despite the schedule flexibility that online learning offers, adult students still must prioritize

their responsibilities and commitments in order to complete assignments on time. ”Parents aren’t the only ones who need to understand that going back to school is a time-consuming process. Everyone in the family should understand the commitment as well,” says Savitri Dixon-Saxon, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, associate dean of Walden University’s School of Counseling and Social Service. Walden University offers more than 60 online doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degree programs. Here are five tips from Dr. Dixon-Saxon for achieving balance: * Choose a focus or specialization that you truly care about. The juggling act will be much more challenging for you if you don’t enjoy your field of study. Choose a focus area you are passionate about. * Set aside time for your

studies. Set specific time frames for studying and completing assignments. This requires discipline and time management, but once you establish a routine, it can help keep you on track. * Find a place to do your studies. It’s easy to be distracted, so find a quiet place

to study away from excessive noise and interruptions. * Ask for help. Make connections early on with classmates and faculty members to set up online study groups and start the term off right. * Renew your energy. Take time for yourself as part of your schedule. Spend

time with your family and friends to recharge your batteries. For additional tips for a successful online learning experience, go to www.WaldenU.edu/studytips.

he San Jose Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival will kick off September 18. This year will be known as VivaFest, in an effort to recognize 20 years of Latino music, theater, film, and visual arts with educational music, dance workshops and community conversations. The Mexican Heritage Corporation has produced the festival once a year in September. It’s a destination event that showcases Latino culture. There’s something for adults, kids, music lovers and film aficionados, and individuals interested in Mexican heritage crafts and the visual arts. On September 23, Los Lobos will perform at the San Jose State Event Center along with The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and special guest Tito Puente, Jr. A band from East Los Angeles, Los Lobos, has subtly challenged their fans with conscience-raising dongs and thought-provoking lyrics. They have been around since the early 70’s and have evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots. They are a rare example of longevity in an unpredictable music world that stresses style over substance. On September 25, there will be another concert. Entitled Once Upon A Time A Mari-

achi Musical, this series is an original musical commissioned by the Festival with support form the National Endowment for the Arts. It will feature Vicki Carr Mariachi Cobre, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Mariachi Reynade Los Angeles and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan. San Jose’s very own Folklorico Company Los Lupenos will also perform. Vikki Carr has won three Grammy Awards and has released over 60 best-selling recordings. She has performed for the Queen of England, five US presidents and sold-out shows around the world. Tow brothers and their friends founded Mariachi Cobre in Tucson, Arizona. This professional group of Mexican Americans men have sung the music of Mexico, not only in this country but have become ambassadors on other countries as well. Although you must purchase tickets to the concerts, VivaFest will offer a free outdoor festival. Everyone from local mariachis to nationally renowned artists will perform. There will also be family craft activities, vendors selling authentic Mexican art, food, and much more.

Tickets can be purchased for the concerts through http://vivafest.org/tickets or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

La Virgen de Coromoto

E
