1. Foreword by the Vice-Dean Dear incoming students, Welcome to the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Maribor. We are very pleased that you have chosen our school as your destination within the international exchange programs and we will do our best to make your stay in Slovenia a fruitful one. The University of Maribor, the second biggest university in the country, has been a leader in Slovenia concerning international exchange of students for years. This is especially true for the Faculty of Economics and Business. We have a vast experience in this field and have built connections with many partners within the EU and rest of the World. This will enable you to meet students of many different nationalities and to establish numerous contacts and friendships, which will enhance your further studies and professional careers. In order to facilitate and motivate student mobility, our International Office will provide you with excellent support and will be a pleasant meeting point at the same time. The Head of International Office Ms. Sanja Kocijan, MSc, and other staff members will be willing to answer all the questions you may have and will assist you during your stay in Maribor. One of constitutional constraints in Slovenia is that lectures within the full time study must be held in the Slovenian language. Up to now, we have dealt with this by organizing additional lectures and consultations in English for selected courses for our foreign students. Thus, you have quite a few of them at your disposal. We are convinced that you will benefit from your stay at the FEB, will get a comprehensive knowledge of business and economics, and that the expectations of your home institution and yourself will be met. In addition to your studies, there will be numerous social events during your stay, which will surely contribute to your international experience at FEB. A semester abroad will enable you with personal growth and independence. Slovenia is a country with different landscapes and various cultural roots – explore it as you travel along the nice countryside and discover pleasant towns. We invite you to take as much advantage of your stay at FEB as possible and to enjoy your stay in Maribor and Slovenia. Hopefully, the international experience at FEB will give you wings to take advantage of other international options in your studies and your future professional challenges. Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at the University of Maribor Milestones of the Faculty of Economics and Business In 1959 the two-year post secondary Commercial School (Višja komercialna šola) was established in Maribor. This act represented the foundation of the present day Faculty of Economics and Business as well as the University of Maribor. The purpose of the establishment was to fill the gap between the secondary and university education in economics. The foundation of the School also stemmed from the needs of the economy lacking suitably educated economists and from the desire of the already employed economists to upgrade their practical experience with theoretical findings. The ever multiplying wishes and demands of the economy, various assessments and projects, the increasing scope of research work as well as the organisation of conferences dictated the change of the School's name. In 1963, it was renamed as the School of Economics and Business (Višja ekonomsko-komercialna šola) which became renowned by its acronym 'VEKŠ' throughout Slovenia. A good academic staff structure and quality work done by the teachers led to the initiation of a post-graduate studies programme In 1969, VEKŠ became the first higher in 1971. The doctoral programme is strictly researchoriented. The students acquire an extended knowledge and an understanding of the most complex economic and business phenomena at national and international level. The students are required to carry out individual research work and to present results which are assessed by professors, students and professionals. The 3rd cycle of study, i.e. doctoral programme ‘Economic and Business Sciences’, comprises 10 courses. The students acquire the latest knowledge in economics and relevant research methodologies for the realization of their unique research potentials. After fulfilling all the requirements of the programme, the students are awarded the scientific title ‘Doctor of Science’.

Student Organisations and Institutions for Students

Locations The Faculty of Economics and Business has two locations: Razlagova 14 and Razlagova 20. While the International Office, Office for Student’s Affairs and the Dean’s office are situated at Razlagova 14, the library can be found at Razlagova 20. Lecture rooms, computer centre and professors’ offices are placed in both locations.

Faculty Library (Knjižnica EPF) The modern and well-stocked faculty library caters for the needs of students, teachers and associates of the Faculty. The stock of books amounts to more than 106.000 units on open access, and 160 current periodicals. In addition, students have access to electronic databases, to the Internet, and to the COBISS/OPAC catalogue system. The library is situated in the basement of Razlagova 20, the reading room for journals and magazines is on the first floor. Information on the Internet: www.epf.um.si «

Computer Lab There are four computer rooms for students;

University of Maribor Sports Centre “Leon Štukelj” The University Sports Centre (UŠC, www. usc.um.si) offers a wide range of sports programmes and guarantees a high quality of activities. It is located at Koroška cesta 130 in the western part of Maribor, close to the student dormitories at Gosposvetska cesta. Several sport halls are provided for indoor sport activities. Students can choose from a wide range of activities: volleyball, indoor soccer, badminton, table tennis, squash, aerobics, fitness, dancing, yoga, fighting sports (aikido, judo, karate), kinesiotherapy. Apart from that, Maribor’s sports facilities offer ice skating, skiing, and swimming. Students also have a possibility to participate in various outdoor activities. They can join sports schools like the school of tennis, skiing, swimming, sailing, kayak, riding, as well as inter-faculty competitions. Participation in extracurricular sports activities organised by the University of Maribor Student Organisation (www.soum.si) is possible as well.

Communication

Local and public transport in Maribor The Faculty of Economics and Business, the main University building, the railway and the bus station – all are within walking distance. The same applies to the student dormitories at Tyrševa ulica, which are situated next to the municipal park (mestni park) and about ten minutes on foot from the faculty. The student dormitories at Gosposvetska cesta and the Student Sports Centre are located in the western part of the town, about twenty minutes walking distance from the Faculty and fifteen minutes from the city centre. So, there is probably no need for public transport. Nonetheless, exchange students as well as regular students are entitled to get a reduction on monthly bus tickets. Timetables of the city bus are available from http://www. marprom.si/en/. Cars can be parked in the blue zone, in public car parks, or in multi-storey car parks for several hours at a time. Parking spaces at the student dormitories are free of charge, but limited in number. Climate and weather Slovenia lies in the northern moderate warm zone, in a region where there is twice as much 76

rain and snowfall as the world average, and consequently the Slovenian countryside is pleasantly green. Simultaneously, Maribor shares a strong Pannonian influence, and that is why the amount of rainfall in the city is somewhat lower (on an average 1050 mm per year). Most rain falls from April to July, mostly as showers and heavy rain. Maribor is one of the sunniest places in Slovenia; it has an average of 266 sunny days per year. You can visit museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas or you can spend the evening with your friends in one of the pubs and disco clubs. Cultural events may contribute to helping you get acquainted with the city. Some of these events are known also abroad - especially the “Festival Lent” (lent.slovenija.net) in the early summer and the Borštnik Meeting of Slovenian theatres.

You can access the Internet for free from the computer lab at the Faculty, from the computer rooms in the student dormitories, or from your dormitory room (if equipped). Otherwise there are cyber cafes and public institutions offering Internet access.

Nature Maribor lies in the embrace of the green Pohorje mountains and wine growing hills, at both sides of the river Drava. Pohorje is a skiing centre in winter and a place for hiking, cycling, and recreation all year round. In the municipality of Maribor there is a large number of protected natural sights: three regional/landscape parks (Drava, Trije ribniki, Mariborsko jezero), a natural reserve (Mariborski otok) and others. several restaurants, bistros, canteens, and pizzerias all over the town. Each student can get up to twenty coupons per month. The price varies from € 0.00 to € 4.00 representing a value of € 2.50 to € 7. So buying meal coupons is the cheapest way to get lunch or dinner. Private Accommodation A more expensive way of staying in Maribor is renting a private room or a flat. There is plenty of information about different kinds of rooms and rents in the local newspapers. We suggest you look through the advertisements when you arrive with a Slovenian student - your mentor. Renting a private room will cost you from € 100 to € 200 per month plus expenses

Residence EU citizens As a student at the University of Maribor, you are obliged to apply for a valid residence permit in the Republic of Slovenia at the Municipality of Maribor. The application for residence must be accompanied by evidence of fulfilment of the following conditions: • Application form – Form 1 • Copy of valid Identity card or Passport and the original as the proof • Copy of your Acceptance letter and the original (as a proof that you are enrolled in a recognized educational institution) • Copy of your European health insurance card (and the original as the proof) or other health insurance policy, but it has to be translated into Slovene or English language • Declaration of finances – FORM 2 • Confirmation of your EMŠO number - you will receive that at the registration at your faculty • Personal photo of 3,5 x 4,5 - a proper photo on a photo paper, no copies or printed photos • Declaration of temporary residence: if you stay in a private accommodation: confirmation from your private accommodation – Signed contract or Declaration of owner (if you stay in the Student dormitories, the dorms will take care of that • Personal photo 3,5 × 4,5 cm NOTE: 78

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) – Projects for Exchange Students The Erasmus Student Network at the University of Maribor assists exchange students during their stay in Slovenia and organises the Welcome Week as well as trips and other events. Each exchange student is cared for by her or his mentor, a Slovenian student that will help at any time and give an understanding of Maribor’s student and cultural life. The Welcome Week takes place during the first week of the semester. It lasts five days and tends to help incoming students

arranging formalities, getting to know the city and its surroundings, and many other things. Besides the Welcome Week, ESN arranges weekly evening meetings, birthday parties, cultural events, sports activities and trips to different regions of Slovenia. This is a cheap and successful way to get to know the treasures of Slovenia and regularly means great fun! Marzena Ficek from Katowice Hello! If you think about studying somewhere abroad you have to choose the University of Maribor in Slovenia. Slovenia is a small but so beautiful country, Maribor is full of nice coffee places. The faculty offers interesting subjects and has very helpful professors. ESN organise a time full of attractions so you don’t even have to worry about being bored. What are you waiting for? Go and apply for a semester in Maribor. Hannu Arola from Vaasa In my opinion, an exchange time is much more than just school. It’s about spending time with different people and a good experience of living in a foreign country… In Maribor, I lived in a student dormitory, which I really enjoyed. Overall, I want to say that my time in Maribor was one of the greatest periods in my whole life. I got a lot of new friends from all over the world.

We wouldn’t have imagined that so many different people from so many different countries can become such good friends. Cecília Szolnoki from Budapest I was a CEEPUS student in Maribor for the winter semester 2015, and luckily, I could prolong my study for one semester more. I applied for the prolongation because of the wonderful time, the school, and the surroundings. The professors here made our life easier, they were always ready to help, as well as the International Office and the ESN. If I had to choose again a place to go, for sure it would be Maribor again! Ivan Antonijević from Podgorica This is my first time to be separated from my family for a longer period. The people in Maribor, the exchange students, the professors – all are really kind and help in any situation. So after one semester I decided to prolong my stay in Slovenia. Mart Knol from Leeuwarden When the teachers at my school told me to go to Maribor I had no idea to what kind of country I would be going. But after a few days in Maribor I experienced that the Slovenians were very nice and open minded. We stayed in a nice student dormitory and had the opportunity to visit also the neighbouring countries like Austria, Croatia and Hungary. I met people from other countries and got to know their habits: You can have a great time with other students at one of the parties. The faculty is very well arranged. The first day you get a good introduction what you can expect. And the courses that I followed had a good quality. When you have the opportunity of studying in Maribor don’t hesitate!
