T In The Park 2011

REVIEW by Caitlin King

A

blanket of tightly-knit tents hugs the rolling green hills and the fickle sun peers out from behind the clouds. People laugh and sing as they lug bags full of camping equipment and beer to the massive field that will be their home for the next few days. They put up tents, set up barbecues and crank up speakers. This is Balado, home to Scotland’s biggest music festival, T In The Park. A quick perusal of the line up reveals that the organisers of the festival have done relatively well to ensure that there are no major clashes between acts, and the Friday kicks off with a thoroughly enjoyable set from Tom Jones.

Plan B follows with an excellent show which includes some dubstep remixes of classics like “Stand By Me” as well as fans’ favourites such as “She Said,” which has the entire crowd singing along. Indie rockers Arctic Monkeys close the first night with a bang, crashing through hits like, “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor,” and “Fluorescent Adolescent” and introducing their new single, “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” to the energetic crowd. On Saturday afternoon King Tut’s Wah Wah Tent is bursting at the seams with screaming fans as The Saturdays take to the stage while Guns ‘n’ Roses legend Slash tears up the Main

are a beautiful end to the night. “The Scientist” has people in tears while “Viva La Vida” has everyone belting out the words and dancing. The sun beams down on Balado as Professor Green draws an impressive crowd on

Sunday afternoon at the Radio 1/NME Stage. Unfortunately, as Blondie take to the Main Stage, the heavens open and the rain becomes so persistent that the T In The Park staffbegin handing out rain ponchos. Singer Debbie Harry takes it all in her stride and keeps thecrowd in high spirits with her powerful voice and lively performance. Later, pop sensation Bruno Mars has the audience serenading the sky with “Just The Way You Are” and “Grenade.” He is followed by a kilt-clad Tinie Tempah who has the crowd wrapped round his little finger – he has them crouching on the muddy ground during “Miami 2 Ibiza,” bouncing to “Frisky” and he even starts a moshpit before

9 showing T In The Park what’s under his kilt (which is TV appropriate, thankfully!) As the Foo Fighters bound onto the Main Stage, the rain starts again and frontman Dave Grohl perks up the audience with his witty banter. The legendary rock band proceed to storm through an electrifying set and “The Pretender,” “Best of You,” and “Monkey Wrench,” go down particularly well. They vow to “keep playing ‘til they tell us to stop” – and they do. Fireworks explode to close the festival, providing a strange percussion for the bagpiper who plays the elated crowd out with “Flower of Scotland”; a fitting goodbye to Balado for another year.

The date for this year's Scottish Car Show in association with The Sun has been announced so remember to put a note in your diary for Sunday 17th July. This year's event promises to be bigger and bolder with more cars than ever before and being better value all round with the entry price dropping even in light of the VAT rise. With 2011 being the eighth annual car show at Ingliston, things are being majorly revamped with more emphasis on the show being about cars from all walks of life. By expanding the scope of the event to include performance, prestige, import, classic, retro, Euro, JDM and American Muscle, things are hotting up and with more variety the show will appeal to a far wider audience with more to see than ever before. With car clubs and websites from across the country in attendance, FastCar magazine bringing with them the best UK motors along plus an array of stunt shows, children's fairgrounds, competitions, giveaways, go karting, drift displays and much more on the day, you cant ask for better. Plus The Scottish Car Show Babes will soon be out and about Scotland promoting the event at cruises, shows, club meets and at the premiere of Fast Five, the latest installment of the highly successful Fast & Furious series which landed on British shores on April 29th. With more and more additions being added to the roster on an almost daily basis its going to be the best show at Ingliston yet.
