Cycle to beat cancer Scotland and British and Irish Lions star Chris Cusiter – who lost his father Stan to prostate cancer last year - is urging East Kilbride cycling fans to sign up for the Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride. The Scottish leg of the professional Tour of Britain cycling event takes place on September 11, but The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride gives people of all cycling abilities the unique opportunity to experience the route on September 4, one week before the professionals, while raising funds to fight the most common cancer in men in Scotland. Participants can take on the full 170km pro ride route from Peebles to Dumfries, or the shorter but still rewarding Challenge Ride which takes place over the final 70 kilometres of the Pro Ride. Chris Cusiter said: “I think it’s fantastic that the first leg of The

Tour of Britain is taking place in Scotland. Thanks to The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride people of all cycling abilities have the unique opportunity to experience the route a week before the professionals. “I would strongly encourage people all across the country to get

right behind this excellent event. It will be a great day out in its own right, but those taking part will also know they are doing their bit to raise funds for the fight against

August 2011 prostate cancer - the most common cancer in men in Scotland. “As mant as 2,700 Scots are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and two die of the disease every day. By participating in The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride on 4 September people can play their part in changing these statistics, and Scotland, for the better. I hope many, many Scots rise to the challenge - and do just that.” Ann Ferguson, head of operations at The Prostate Cancer Charity Scotland, said: “The Tour Ride on 4 September is a great event, and we are delighted that Chris Cusiter has offered his backing to it. Not only is Chris a fantastic ambassador for rugby and for Scotland, he is a fantastic ambassador for The Prostate Cancer Charity as it strives for a world where lives are no longer limited by the disease. Keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours SOUTH Lanarkshire Council is backing a new STV advert which aims to get people to recognise when vulnerable adults are in trouble. The campaign is being launched on 22 August and aims to offer hope to the thousands of Scottish adults who suffer verbal, physical, sexual and financial harm every day. It focuses on the issues of the financial exploitation of the elderly, the day to day harm suffered by adults with learning disabilities and how long term alcohol abuse can affect a person’s ability to look after themselves. A spokeswoman for the effort said “Everyone recognises that children are vulnerable and need

to be protected but many of us don’t realise that, sometimes, adults need protecting too. “For most of us being an adult is about being able to look after yourself but people can become frail, they can get dementia, they can suffer from mental illness and alcohol or drugs can take their toll. Unfortunately, there is often someone who is willing to take advantage of people when they become vulnerable. “This campaign is about raising awareness about the issues some adults face from physical injury to exploitation. The advert promotes a free hotline number, 0300 777 6520 and web site www.adultprotection.tv which people

can use to get help or to report concerns about friends, relatives or neighbours. Research carried out by Mencap, the charity for people with learning disabilities and their families, found 90 per cent of people with learning disabilities reported being bullied in the last year with over 30 per cent of them suffering verbal or physical assault every day or every week. Research by the charity Action on Elder Abuse, recently revealed property and cash worth nearly £8m, including 31 homes, had been stolen from UK pensioners in just one, 12 month period. The figures were generated from 471 calls to the charity’s helpline.
