2012 ALL-OVC

SELECTION u

Sophomore Forward Hannah Miller

MILLER NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-OVC TEAM Panther women’s soccer player Hannah Miller was named to the Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team by College Sports Madness.

CHERRY NAMED INTERIM HEAD COACH A year after completing his first season as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer program, Jason Cherry was named the interim head coach on Aug. 1 by EIU Director of Athletics, Barbara Burke.

The sophomore forward had two goals and one assist last season, earning All-OVC Newcomer Team honors. The Fishers, Ind., native looks to fill a void left on offense with the graduation of four-time all-conference selection Kristin Germann who led the team in scoring a year ago with eight goals and one assist.

The South Bend, Ind., native has nearly 10 years of collegiate coaching experience in addition to over 10 years of experience at the club and high school level.

PANTHERS PICKED NINTH IN PRESEASON OVC POLL The Panther women’s soccer team was picked to finish ninth in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll as selected by conference head coaches and sports information directors.

“I look forward to seeing the progress and hard work our young team put in during the offseason come fruition on the playing field this fall. Despite the slow start to the 2012 season, we want to build on the success we had towards the end of the year (went 4-3-1 in last eight matches).”

UT Martin earned 18, first-place votes and was tabbed to win the conference while the remaining four, first-place votes went to Austin Peay who was selected to finish second.

CASTELON NAMED ASSISTANT COACH Tony Castelon was named assistant women’s soccer coach on Aug. 1. He most recently served as a faculty member and coaching ambassador for the United States Sports Academy, working in six regions throughout Southeast Asia. Prior to working overseas, Castelon served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Western Illinois (2010-11). 2013 SCHEDULE The Panthers have a nine-game nonconference schedule, beginning with the home opener on Aug. 23 against Oakland. All told, EIU’s nine non-conference foes posted an 84-68-24 record last season with a .545 winning percentage. The Panthers will face a total of three teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, including the defending-OVC champions, UT Martin. Following the season opener, EIU hits the road for five consecutive matches. The Panthers travel to Northern Illinois (Aug. 25) before participating in the Green Bay Tournament (Aug. 30 – Sept. 1) where they will face Northern Iowa and Green Bay. EIU concludes the road trip at Ball State (Sept. 6) and at Missouri (Sept. 13).

PANTHER WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012 SCHEDULE (CONTINUED) Other non-conference matches include traveling to Valparaiso (Sept. 22) and playing host to Loyola (Sept. 15) and Drake (Sept. 20). EIU opens Ohio Valley Conference action at Belmont on Sept. 27. The Panthers will also have road conference contests at Austin Peay (Oct. 11), at Murray State (Oct. 13), at UT Martin (Oct. 25) and at Southeast Missouri (Oct. 27). The home portion of the Panthers conference schedule begins on Sept. 29 against Tennessee Tech. Other home OVC matches include playing host to Morehead State (Oct. 4), Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 6), Jacksonville State (Oct. 18) and SIUE (Nov. 3). The conference tournament will be played on Nov. 7-10 at the school that captures the regular-season title. LOOKING TO BUILD ON 2012 STRONG FINISH Despite starting the 2012 season with a 2-9 record, the Panthers concluded the season with a 4-3-1 record. EIU returns 14 letterwinners from last year’s team and six starters. The Panthers also did well in overtime matches in 2012, posting a 4-2-1 record in those matches.

Junior Midfielder Meagan Radloff

“We worked hard on our fitness level in the offseason and I expect us to be more competitive out of the gates this season. Our seven upperclassmen have proved to be great leaders over the summer to our 21 underclassmen and we need that to continue for us to be successful this fall.”

- Head Coach Jason Cherry

RETURNERS Hannah Miller highlights a group of returners as she was named to the All-OVC Newcomer Team last season. The sophomore forward had two goals and one assist last year. The Panthers also return 42 percent of their offensive from a year ago. Junior Allie Lakie tied for the team lead in assists with three while fellow captain, senior defender Caitilin Greene, scored two goals and had one assist. All told, 10 players who played over 700 minutes last season return for the 2013 campaign. NEWCOMERS The Panthers have a total of 12 newcomers for the upcoming season, including three transfer student-athletes. Two of the transfers are Cortney Jerzy and Kylie Morgan, the younger sister of former Panthers Jessie Morgan (2009-12), who will both compete for playing time between the pipes. EIU also added Chris Reed who transferred from the University of Cincinnati and will play as a forward. The Panthers have nine true freshmen that include: five forwards, two defenders, one midfielder and one goalkeeper. PANTHER WOMEN’S SOCCER 1999 • Record: 11-9 OVC Regular Season and Tournament Champions In only their second year in the OVC, the Panthers posted an undefeated 5-0 record in conference action to capture their first regular-season title. EIU would eventually go on to win their first tournament title as well. Two players in Ida Hakansson and Cara LeMaster would end up earning individual accolades at the conclusion of the season. Hakansson was named ‘Player of the Year’ while LeMaster was tabbed the ‘Freshman of the Year’.

2000 • Record: 15-4-1 OVC Regular Season Champions In 2000, the Panthers again would post a 5-0 record in OVC play to capture the regular-season title for the second consecutive year. The 15 wins is the second most in single-season history behind the 1996 squad that won 16 matches. After defeating Morehead State 3-1 in the first match of the conference tournament, the Panthers were upset in the tournament finale by Tennessee Tech, 1-0, in an overtime thriller. Beth Liesen was named the conference’s ‘Freshman of the Year’ after leading the Panthers in scoring with 33 points. She posted 15 goals, the fifth most in singleseason history, to go along with three assists. Devon Bissel was named ‘OVC Player of the Year’ after recording 10 assists and three goals. Bissel’s 10 assists are tied for the sixth most in EIU single-season history. In addition to the player awards, head coach Steve Ballard was named the ‘OVC Coach of the Year’ for the first time in his coaching career.

PANTHER WOMEN’S SOCCER 2001 • Record: 14-6 OVC Tournament Champions The 2001 campaign marked the beginning of four consecutive OVC Tournament Championships for the Panthers. Beth Liesen and Devon Bissell continued to lead a high-powered offense in 2001, combining to score 59 of the team’s 128 points. Liesen scored 18 goals and added five assists while Bissell recorded an EIU singleseason record 16 assists. Liesen also set a conference single-season record with nine game-winning goals. The Panthers advanced to their first NCAA Tournament, facing Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 16. The Fighting Irish handed the Panthers a 2-0 loss.

2002 • Record: 12-8-2 OVC Tournament Champions In 2002, the Panthers won their second consecutive OVC Tournament Title. Southeast Missouri State won the regularseason title in 2001 and 2002, but lost to the Panthers both years in the conference tournament finale. Conference newcomer Samford won the regular-season title, but the Panthers would win their third tournament title in a row.
