Voor u ligt het boek ‘Puur Papier’. Het is het boek dat verschijnt ter gelegeheid van de Holland Papier Biënnale 2008, een internationale expositie van papierkunst, die van juni tot en met september is te zien in CODA/ Museum Apeldoorn en Museum Rijswijk. Puur Papier is een bijzondere uitgave: het bestaat uit verschillende boeken samengebundeld in een foedraal.

Lying in front of you is the book ‘Pure Paper’. It is the book published in honor of the Holland Paper Biennial 2008, an international exposition of paper art that can be visited from June to September in CODA/ Museum Apeldoorn and Museum Rijswijk. ‘Pure Paper’ is a unique publication: it is a compilation of various books bundled together in a case.

In de Kunstenaarscatalogus krijgt u een overzicht van alle kunstenaars van de Holland Papier Biënnale, een initiatief van de gelijknamige stichting. De exposerende kunstenaars van over de hele wereld geven letterlijk de state of the art weer van de hedendaagse papierkunst. Veel kunstenaars zijn in beide musea te zien, het grotere en meer conceptuele werk in CODA / Museum Apeldoorn, het intiemere werk in Museum Rijswijk. Van een selectie van de kunstenaars kunt u zien èn voelen welk materiaal zij voor hun kunstwerken gebruiken in het deel Papiermonsters.

In the ‘Catalogue of artists’, you see an overview of all the participating artists in the Holland Paper Biennial, an initiative of the foundation of the same name. The exhibiting artists from around the world literally present the state of the art in contemporary paper art. Many artists are exhibited in both museums, the larger more conceptual pieces in CODA/ Museum Apeldoorn and the more intimate pieces in Museum Rijswijk. You can see and feel the material used by a selection of the artists in the section ‘Paper samples’.

Het volgende deel heet Papierkunstenaars aan het werk. Drie kunstenaars laten elk in een fotoverslag zien hoe hun papierkunst tot stand komt. U volgt het maken van een schilderij met zeer vloeibare papierpulp doorn de Amerikaanse Pat Torley. U bent getuige van de verbouw van de grondstoffen voor en het vervaardigen van het Japanse washi door de daar wonende Rogier Uitenboogaart. En u volgt het maken van een papierbeeld vanaf het pulpstadium tot en met het gedroogde drie dimensionale eindproduct door de Rijswijkse kunstenaar Peter Gentenaar. U leest over het ontstaan van papier in het deel Van vezel tot papier. Papierrestaurator Bas van Velzen legt op aanstekelijke wijze uit hoe de chemische reacties tussen cellulose en water leiden tot het verbond tussen de vezels in het materiaal papier. Piet Zegers en Bert van Joolen bieden u een kijkje in de laatste op waterkracht aangedreven papierfabriek van Nederland, de Middelste Molen. In Natuurlijk papier nemen wij u mee naar de oorsprong van het papier: naar de plantenwereld die de grondstof voor papier levert. De Koninklijke Bibliotheek geeft net als in eerdere biënnaleboeken ook deze editie weer zijn onmisbare historische fundament met een verhaal over de 18de eeuwse Duitse dominee Jacob Christian Schäffer. Hij ging, toen de vraag naar lompen het aanbod in die tijd verre overschreed, op zoek ging naar alternatieve vezels voor papier. Het resultaat van die zoektocht werd gepubliceerd in indrukwekkende boeken met papiermonsters, gemaakt van aardappelschil tot dennennaald. Gabriëlle Beentjes en Henk Porck schrijven hierover.

The following volume is called ‘Paper artists at work’. Three artists each have a story in photos showing how their pieces are created. You can see the process of making a painting with watery paper pulp by the American, Pat Torley. You witness the cultivation of the raw materials for and the making of Japanese washi by Rogier Uitenboogaart, now living there. You follow the growth of a paper sculpture from the liquid pulp to the dried three-dimensional end product by the Dutch artist, Peter Gentenaar. You read about the origin of paper in the volume ‘From fibre to paper’. Paper restorer Bas van Velzen explains, in an animated way, how chemical reactions between cellulose and water lead to the connection of the fibers in paper as a material. Piet Zegers and Bert van Joolen give you a look at the last water powered paper factory in the Netherlands, The Middelste Molen. In ‘Natural paper’ we take you to the roots of paper: to the world of plants that supply the raw material for paper. The Royal Library gives us, just as in earlier biennial books, in this edition also, an indispensable, historical foundation, with a story about the 18th century German clergyman Jacob Christian Schäffer. He began a search for alternatives for paper fibers when, at that time, the demand for rags was so much larger than the supply. The result of his search was published in an impressive book of paper samples made from potato peels to pine needles. Gabriëlle Beentjes and Henk Porck write about this.

Verder is er een intermezzo over ‘dierenpapier’, papier en karton dat door wespen, mieren en zelfs vogels wordt gemaakt. De ervaren papiermaker Helen Hiebert wijst u ten slotte de weg bij het zelf maken van papier met de planten uit uw tuin. Stap voor stap legt ze het hele proces uit, van het vrijmaken van de vezels uit de plant tot en met malen van de vezels in de Hollander tot goede pulp.

There is a intermezzo about ‘animal paper’, paper and cardboard made by wasps, ants and even birds. The experienced papermaker Helen Hiebert shows you the way to make your own paper from your own garden plants. Step by step, she leads you through the whole process, from freeing the fibers from the plant to milling the fibers to proper pulp, in a hollander beater.

Bijzonder is ook Traditioneel papier. De Amerikaanse papierkenner Elaine Koretsky doorkruiste jarenlang met haar man de binnenlanden van Azië, op zoek naar dorpse gemeenschappen waar men nog steeds papier maakt met traditionele technieken. Haar fotoverslag laat een keur van al die bijna uitgestorven gemeenschappen zien. Een beschrijving van de ontwikkeling van een Chinees papierdorp in de afgelopen eeuw door sinoloog en hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Chicago, Jacob Eyferth, maakt deze beleving compleet. Het is een reis in de tijd die eer betoont aan het land waar het papiermaken is ontstaan.

‘Traditional paper’ is also special. The American paper expert, Elaine Koretsky, traveled with her husband back and forth through Asia, hunting for village societies where the traditional techniques were still alive. Her photo reports show a range of all these, almost extinct, societies. A description of the development of a Chinese paper village in the last century, by the China expert and professor at the University of Chicago, Jacob Eyferth, makes this experience complete. It is ‘time travel’ that honors the land where papermaking has its origins.

Natuurlijk kijken we ook naar de actualiteit, in De toekomst van papier. Daar doet fotograaf en grafisch vormgever Tijl Akkermans verslag van de papierrecycling in China. Cia Franssens en Janny Oei van drukkerij Raddraaier laten u inzien dat u als papiergebruiker voortaan misschien beter twee maal kan nadenken voordat u weer een glossy folder laat drukken. Zij werken aan een initiatief om u te informeren over de samenstelling van verschillende papiersoorten en hun effecten op het milieu. Annita Westenbroek van het Kenniscentrum voor Papier en Karton brengt een nieuw probleem in kaart. Door de schaarste aan fossiele brandstoffen en de klimaatverandering stappen we massaal over naar energie uit CO2-neutrale biomassa. Maar dat betekent dat de papierindustrie, die traditioneel hout als grondstof gebruikt, te maken krijgt met steeds hogere prijzen. Michiel Adriaanse en Harry Morsink verhalen over hun zoektocht naar alternatieve papiervezels die dat tot gevolg heeft. Wij hopen dat u zult genieten van het kijken, lezen en voelen van Puur Papier. Naturally, we look at the cutting edge of paper in ‘The future of paper’. Photographer and graphic designer, Tijl Akkermans covers the recycling economy in China. Cia Franssens and Janny Oei from Raddraaier printers, give you the advice to think twice before you, as paper consumer, decide to have a glossy folder printed. They are working on an initiative to supply information about the ingredients of different kinds of paper and their effects on the environment. Anita Westenbroek, from the Knowledge Center for Paper and Cardboard, maps out a new problem. Scarcity of fossil fuels and climate change has triggered a massive movement towards energy from CO2-neutral biomass. This means higher prices for the traditional raw material for the paper industry, wood.
