Possibly students may have difficulty expressing 6y - 3x for an answer, and may be looking for something like 3x or 6y. So they may have totally disregarded 6y - 3x, and failing to find a ‘nice’ answer, may have chosen D. You may expose them to problems which have expression as answers and help them realise that this is possible. A large percentage of students in the class have a misconception that an expression itself cannot be an answer to this question. The students are used to looking for an answer such as 3x or 6y.
