2011 Lake Update: Natural Rhythms The 2010 season saw a continuing fluctuation in the water levels of this unique, mountain-top lake. Similar to seasons past, there was a rise in water throughout the spring and early summer, topping out at approximately 1/3 full pond, then receding drastically in the late summer and fall. There was a brief period in mid-July when the lake-side dock was floating, and guests were able to enjoy paddling the canoes and kayaks out on to the water. Blue-gilled sunfish and large-mouth bass populations continued to flourish in the lake, large groups of red-spotted newts could be seen from the water’s edge, and it was common to see deer frolicking around the grassy lakebed and forest edge. Mountain Lake is one of only two natural, freshwater lakes in the state of Virginia, and researchers continue to study the geography of the lake and the science behind the historical cycles of water levels. The lake level has been low since the since the summer of 2004, and only time will tell when the water will return to complete the essence that is Mountain Lake. Meanwhile, explore the new wildlife habitat of meadow grasses in the lakebed, and learn something new about the mountain and lake geography in the Conservancy Visitor Center!

INNOVA Frisbee Golf – NEW!

The Frisbee golf course at Mountain Lake just keeps getting better! New this season, a set of alternate, advanced tees has been added to our challenging INNOVA-quality course. Play the course twice by throwing from the alternate tees to make an 18-hole game! There is a 9-hole beginner or practice course in the open meadow, and the 9-hole INNOVA course boasts a challenging topography of moss-covered rocks, moderately forested pathways, and fresh mountain air. Frisbee golf, also known as Disc golf, is a modern version of golf that has been played since the 1960’s and has grown to be an international sport. Discs are thrown from tees to chain baskets in the shortest number of throws possible to make “par”. Discs are available to rent at the Recreation office.

Complimentary Recreational First Annual Disc Golf Tournament at Mountain Lake! Activities for Overnight Lodging Saturday, July 30th Come test your skills with fellow Frisbee golf enthusiasts as we host our first Disc golf tournament! We guarantee a fun-filled day with games, concess-ions, and all things Frisbee golf. Prizes will be awarded to the top winners in an adult and junior bracket. This game is fun for all ages, and beginners and kids can get in on the fun on our 9-hole practice course.
