EHR 101 - 2023 Annual Report

Page 1

Welcome to the latest edition of our annual report on new plant varieties, now known as EHR 101.

This year, we have revamped the name to reflect the exciting changes with our publication. Formerly known as the EHR CAST Report and EHR New Varieties Lookbook, we have crafted the name “EHR 101” to symbolize our journey of new plant varieties that begins on the coastal 101 and crosses the nation to every plant trial along the way.

As our exploration begins anew on the California coast, our journey doesn’t stop there. We will continue traveling across the United States to various regional plant trials, and we are excited to share an update at the end of the summer, complete with additional photos and notes from our observations.

In this year’s report, you will find a remarkable assortment of new varieties deubuted at CAST 2023, but we’ve also since visited the Costa Farms and Metrolina trials to include additional notes and photos. While the number of new plants in our report may not be as vast as in year’s past, we know the ones that are featured are worth a look. We’ll also be considering additional varieties to include in our end-of-summer update to our report. We know that not every plant looks great in each corner of every state, and hopefully our addendum will help you decide what works best for you and your program.

As you embark on your summer trial tours or begin planning for the upcoming production year, we sincerely hope that this report serves as a valuable tool. EHR 101 is designed by our staff and expert sales reps to assist you in navigating the everevolving world of new plant varieties, helping you make informed decisions and discover the perfect additions for gardens and landscapes that will flourish in the years to come.

Thank you for joining us on this journey, enjoy!

DUMMEN ORANGE | Introducing a collection of compact coleus plants from Dummen Orange. Across the series, you’ll find serrated leaves that add texture and interest and all varieties thrive in full sun or shade. The entire series offers great foliage and compact growth, but also the ability to size up nicely. Their compact-medium vigor allows for easy finishing in quarts and gallons. Among the series, Santa Monica is a top pick. The Down Town Series offers great foliage, compact growth, and multitoned leaves that bring a bold look to small spaces. Choose from seven varieties: Columbus, NYC Nights, Santa Monica, Miami Magic, Vegas Neon, Greenville, and Le Freak.

16.

SYNGENTA FLOWERS | A brand new line for Syngenta, a stunning collection of colorful foliage plants suitable for both sun and shade. These coleus are specially bred to maintain their vibrant colors and foliage patterns in all light conditions. We hear they will not exhibit as much fade as competing series, so this is something to keep an eye on at summer trials! With late flowering selections, you can enjoy tidy and non-bolting plants started from consistent, high-quality cuttings for a healthy and vigorous plant. Series colors: Burgundy Lime, Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Veleveteen, Moondust, Tricolor Pink, Sienna. Burgundy Lime and Sienna are a little more compact, where as Chocolate Mint and Chocolate Velvet are later to flower. Sienna and Moondust were EHR favorites at CAST!

17.

PANAMERICAN SEED | Crossing our radar at CAST this season, we were captivated by the unique leaf shape and pattern. This versatile coleus can tolerate full sun in regions with high humidity (Zones 9 and 10), though it may scorch in low humidity. It also thrives in shade. The thin, serrated leaves bring a fresh look, with a coral-pink center blending into green foliage. The range of foliage colours displayed can differ depending on environmental conditions. Recognized as an All-America Selections Winner, Premium Sun Coral Candy can fill a 14-16” container with just 3 seeds!

As part of our California Spring Trials journey, we often make a special stop in the coastal town of Pismo Beach. Dahlia Revelation Series 18.

DUMMEN ORANGE | Introducing the Dahlia Revelation Series, the replacement for the Mystic series and a brand new lineup! These dahlias offer matching timing and habit, while being slightly less vigorous than their predecessor. With five stunning colors, dark foliage, and strong branching, they produce large flowers that make a bold statement, as we saw on display at CAST. The Revelation Series is also mildew resistant. Each 10” pot can accommodate three plants. Among the colors, Salmon Bicolor and Yellow stand out as favorite. Yellow showcases darker foliage compared to the others. For anyone seeking a dahlia that rivals the performance of Mystic Illusion will find the Revelation Series to be a promising choice. Its well-matched timing and vigor make it a delightful solution. Available colors include Pink, Red, Yellow, Soft Orange, and Salmon Bicolor.

DANZIGER | Like its series companions that debuted last year, Presidente THRIVES in the heat! It blooms in the spring and continues to flower throughout the summer, making it a season-long ‘bestie’ to hummingbirds. Well-suited for hot climates, it demonstrated an excellent performance in California even in the early spring. With short internodes, we expect an overall better plant habit. We’ll keep an eye on this variety, as it may be a quality alternative to other popular cultivars in the industry.

BEEKENKAMP | While Beekenkamp showed off a display of bold, vibrant colors at CAST, it was Red Ruffle of the Maggiore dahlias that really took the spotlight. A hot red-orange dahlia that demanded as much attention from the floriferous blooms as it did the large plant habit. Ideal for 8-10” pots, you can expect a sturdy, upright habit with solid stems that make this plant excellent in garden performance.

Hypoestes Impatiens

Lotty Dotty Series

WESTHOFF FLOWERS | Westhoff recognized the need for more shade options for the homeowner, particularly in the realm of foliage, meet the Lotty Dotty series. This line of vegetative hypoestes showcases twice the vigor as seed types and is selected not to flower. These upright plants exhibit an array of bright colors and consistent performance and uniformity to allow for easy mixing. They are the perfect choice for creating exquisite part-sun combination planters! While they fit for 4” production, their true beauty shines when paired with other plants in combos.

SunPatiens® Compact Red Candy

SAKATA | Much like our enthusiasm over last year’s Purple Candy, our interest is matched for the melty bicolor pattern of the Red Candy. Compact Red Candy combines a rose-colored base with a vibrant red star pattern. The dark, glossy leaves create a striking contrast with the eye-catching flowers. This variety offers excellent garden performance, thriving in various conditions. This will replace the previously introduced Pink Candy.

Today, many breeding companies and young plant producers are offering an impressive array of combos and mixes. The products they produce are not only better, prettier, and easier to finish, but also boast exceptional uniformity for the grower and end user alike.

Thanks to remarkable advancements in plant breeding, the components within these combos are now better matched than ever before.

Each plant complements and enhances the beauty of its companions, resulting in stunning displays that captivate the eyes and fill spaces with harmonious colors, textures, and forms.

In response to this growing demand and competition, breeders and producers are investing substantial time and effort into trialing their mixes, often spanning multiple years before adding them to their program. DANZIGER | This introduction had a center stage at CAST, although it would have attracted us from the darkest corner… it is BRIGHT! Orange Lava joins the Lascar series, with a habit that is slightly less vigorous than other Lascar varieties but still early to flower like its companions. The hot orange-red color is so intense, a truly unique color addition! This would be excellent in the landscape, combinations, and hanging baskets.

DANZIGER | This new petunia variety boasts a truly cool and captivating color, guaranteed to make a “hot red” impression! Cascadias™ Arizona Sky features large bicolor flowers of hot orange and red-magenta that cover the entire plant. It has been specifically bred to gracefully cascade over the sides of containers, making it a fantastic choice for premium baskets and combinations. With its early blooming time, it is suitable for any market, ensuring that its stunning display of colors will be enjoyed by all.

WESTHOFF FLOWERS | Westhoff is widely known for their Crazytunia varieties, with one variety more ‘fun’ than the next! This year they debut 3 new varieties, with a future focus on making improvements to classic colors and favorites. The focus will continue to be mounding-upright habits, early flowering, and large blooms for an “easier to grow and earlier to show” petunia. Our favorites introduced this year are Gingersnap and Cosmic Violet. Cosmic Violet is a mutation of Black Mamba which results in a really deep, gorgeous violet color and also pairs it well with other mutations Cosmic Pink and Cosmic Purple. SAKATA | A “wow” addition to the SuperCal line comes as a sweet and sugary red! Previously an exclusive at Home Depot, this variety is now available to all. The large, scarlet-red flowers of SuperCal Premium Red Maple create a “wow” factor at retail. It offers the same excellent performance as SuperCal, with larger flowers, an improved habit and a more mounded, refined growth. Add this to mixed combinations for a stunning display, or let it captivate as a monopot (it sure hooked us). Because it leans more scarlett than bright red, don’t overlook this for fall programs!

SuperCal® Premium Red Maple Discoball Series Double Stuff SERIES

31. 32.

WESTHOFF FLOWERS | A brand new spotted petunia series! Previously Westhoff introduced the Constellation series, but due to some patent issues the series was sidelined. Here they are a few years later with a completely new-tomarket spotted petunia that is special in its own right. The Discoball series of petunia is perfect for a smaller pot, with a more mounding compact habit over more vigorous types we typically see... a perfect fit for growers and consumers. Pink, Purple, and Violet mark the series with more to come in future seasons!

WESTHOFF FLOWERS | This is a really neat, new double series of petunia. While a bit of a novelty, the Double Stuff series seems to be reliable in bloom and habit with a refreshing bi-color double bloom. The plant is compact and is noted to have excellect rain tolerance with a self-cleaning flower, an unsual characteristic for doubles. This petunia variety captured our attention at CAST and we’re eagerly anticipating its performance in summer trials. With its unique color pattern, it offers something truly special. At the Metrolina trials, it was planted in the beds and not totally filled out. While perhaps better suited for a hanging basket, it may put on a stronger show further into the summer.

PROVEN WINNERS | We seem to be partial to a good yellow bloom, because here we are, falling for another yellow bloomer this year! With its buttery yellow petals and a golden yellow center, this variety captures the essence of sunny charm. Compared to other series varieties, you may notice its not quite as leggy, boasting a more uniform, rounded shape. It c ombines a full, well-branched habit with exceptional garden performance spring to fall, with little maintence required. Its flowers are a more intense yellow than Supertunia Limoncello, but they may transition to creamy yellow in southern climates
