Re-evaluating architecture Cross-correlation comes automatically when we are presented with a variety of objects. Similarities and differences are noted and analysed and then compared and contrasted to result in the definition of a system. Reason is imposed on this system, through this process, where there was none before. Reason, also forms a link of this system to the rest of the perceptive environment by comparing it spatially and timely and then giving it characteristics of durability or fragility, solidity or motion. Juxtaposition may exist on this system, though, in the nature of contradicting terms, such as, sturdiness and fluidity of motion. Through time, however, these terms may switch and change and at the point of equilibrium they can define a place of otherness that exists for only that perfect second that everything has come together for a specific cause. On their own, each and every object follows its own pattern of change through time. In groups of two or more they create their own time, and at certain points these different times coincide and the systems harmonize to create a whole, until the end of that synchronization where they go back to their respective groups for an other period before the they follow the same pattern.

The English writer William Somerset Maugham once said that “ dreams are not an escape from reality, but a means to approach her”. André Breton described the event of war as something horrible and despicable. He related war to it being the result of a bourgeoisie chauvinism and an excess of rationality, as well as the elitism and the general system of the social categories. War can be associated with the concepts of organisation, order, rules which are used to apply authority and control. Therefore, surrealists like Breton wanted to lose all this control and order which were considered the root of the war. In tandem, the event of the war instigated the realisation of the movement of surrealism, organising a group of people with similar interests and expressing ideas that had not been expressed before in such a manner. As Jules de Gaultier expressed, “Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality” and a new war against reality and its atrocities began.

The landscape is at the same time integral and definitive, as well as, irrelevant and alien. The fact that we are dealing with surrealism may only result to a dual relationship with the terrain/landscape/site. Surrealism is connected to reality in the sense of it being beyond and above it. In the sense of it using reality as something familiar with which one can relate to and use it as reference to transcend beyond it. It has no other use. Surrealists want nothing more to do with reality and begrudgingly agree for this minor relation to it. So what should the organisation of the museum be on the site? It could completely merge with it and contrast the alienness of the surreal spaces to the normality of the landscape. But, it could also become a tool with which the landscape transforms to a gradually different kind of site, one where the rules of reality and nature become blurred and work in mysterious ways.


EXPLOSIVE PYROTECHNICS A N E B U LLIEN T PAVILION

Constructing the ephemeral Fireworks use the principle of explosion, and over time, the changes in the pattern of the explosion are making the scenery. Various forms using different elements, not only light but noise and smoke are explored. Digitally, aggregation is designed and manipulated with the use of Python. Fireworks landscape can be analyzed by points, lines, surfaces and a variety of scenes and elements that can be changed are produced. Various forms until the end of the fireworks in the case of continuous scenes will be directed. This pavilion is constantly changing in the air.

City of emergency reclusion In a possible future, where mass nuclear reactions have brought the radiation levels of the planet to dangerous levels, people seek refuge to a quarantine beneath the earth’s surface. A new city under the city that is inhabited whenever there is an immediate need and whenever the conditions on the surface are not safe for the human health. This new city will compose a system of isolation from the rest of the world and it will provide its citizens the essentials for their survival until the surface becomes again habitable. In this new reality of pollution, the earth’s surface is transformed into a hostile environment for the human, who in order to protect himself must hide under the ground. There, in a closed and checked environment, the society evolves in order to suit the new laws for survival. The shelter in the area of Lycabetus constitutes an example for underground shelters that are found inside mountainous forms. These become viable having applied techniques and methods of underground mining, as those of underground marble quarries of Penteli, offering not only multiform spaces, but also protection. The location of the shelter allows for easy access from all the central regions of the city, providing protection and accommodation to about 40.000 residents. Initially designed as a nuclear shelter due to the recent events of radiation pollution in Japan, the shelter can also be used as a protection from other dangers, some of them being biological or chemical pollution, or even in the event of floods.

VIRTUAL MUSEUM

MUSEUM OF NEW MEDIA IN KERAMEIKOS, ATHENS

The VR Museum is the proposal for the new museum of digital and new media in the city of Athens, at the Kerameikos area, a developing area for up and coming artists and art exhibitions. The basic idea for the design were fractals in the form of Afferent Nerve Endings (FNE) that send information from the periphery to the brain. With the use of Processing and Context Free Art applications these fractals helped shape the final structure of the museum that expands towards all directions, providing a multitude of different spaces for various exhibtions.

The greek apartment block is a form that has been overused and created many problems to the city life. This proposal is a new aproach to the way apartments are designed and placed to create an apartment building. beginning with two modules of living space thery are placed experimentally in different positions in an attempt to profit from the light air and space. the new formations are then “cut” to fit the area and “punctured” vertically with elevators and staircases to create modes of accessibility. HETEROTOPIC SETTLEMENT

HOUSING FOR 300 CITIZENS IN L AKE KARL A AND BEYOND

ACADEMIC UTH 2010 SYNTHESIS STUDIO VII SUPERVISOR: PROF. K. PANIYIRIS

Heterotopia - Places of other This proposal was designed for the creation of a settlement in the region of the new artificial lake Karla in Thessaly, Greece. Initially it was a group of residences that were located in the the lake, which would gradually be submerged as the lake would be filled with water. Thus, the residences would create a space antithetical to that of their surroundings.




The logic behind this construction is creating a void in the water. the double wall that separates the interior from the exterior has both sructural and mobility uses for the occupants. The houses are attached on this wall and hanging over empty space in various lengths allowing the the empty space below to be used as an oasis by the occupants.

This module’s ability to create something other in its center according to the environment it is placed, led to a series of experimentations to calculate the varieties of such heterotopias it could create. It uses opposits such as dry/wet, full/empty, urban/rural to form a rare sunctuary.

Constructing space that is neither public nor private is a gradual practice. this progress is counter-proportional to the public’s economical and social prosperity. The more issues the public faces the more it turns to areas of public congregation.

The balcony of the greek urban architecture is a saturated form that has been used in extreem with no particular reason. following this extremism the balconies are ellongated to their fullest creating bridges and new areas that intertwine the private area of the house with the public outer environment of the city.
