Crisis Averted for Solar in Arizona. But We’re Not Out of the Woods yet.

In late August, Arizona’s clean-energy community gasped and breathed a sigh of relief in quick succession A top official in the industry’s regulator proposed and then, in the face of public outrage, backed off from an extreme and abrupt cut to the solar export rate, which compensates owners of solar systems for the power they supply to the grid.

At an official hearing of the Arizona Corporation Commission on Aug. 24, Commissioner Nick Myers withdrew his proposal to cut the solar-energy purchase rate by 37 percent, which he had filed a mere 48 hours before to the shock and dismay of green-energy supporters.

The measure, which would have suddenly overturned a deal struck in 2017 to limit yearly reductions of the export rate to 10 percent, would have been a devastating blow to rooftop solar power in Arizona.

Arizona’s rooftop solar industry was sweating buckets. But it was only a respite; the commission only tabled the issue, leaving it to be discussed further on October 3.

Since harmful changes to the export rate still loom on the horizon, we thought it would be a good use of this space to clear up the confusion and misinformation around green energy. Then we’ll talk about the tricky situation these new developments leave us in as solarenergy investors and suppliers.

Myers bases his proposal on the common but misconceived notion that the export rate constitutes a “subsidy” of some kind to owners of rooftop solar. But as solar advocates have pointed out, what APS is paid retail and what it pays on a wholesale basis to other power suppliers (which mainly pump out greenhouse gases in addition to electricity) regularly exceeds the amount paid to owners of rooftop systems for their power, sometimes by a factor greater than ten.

“An APS customer installing rooftop solar today gets $76 [per megawatt-hour] for excess via the [buyback rate] while paying to APS $107 [per megawatt-hour] off-peak and $290 [per megawatt-hour] on peak,” wrote Court Rich on X (formerly Twitter), an attorney who advocates for solar companies. “Yet in July, APS regularly purchased wholesale power during day at $200 and even up to $900/ MWh. The RCP is a good deal, not a subsidy!”

The consistent use of the term “subsidy” reflects an ingrained misunderstanding on the part of commissioners

about not just the financial math but about the nature of the relationship between utilities and solar-sysetm owners, said Val Berechet, CEO of SunSolar Solutions.

As Berechet has argued, solar customers have invested their own wealth into their systems, just like a power-plant owner, and seek to recoup that risky investment by selling it to the power distributor at a not-so-generous price, just like a power-plant owner. Therefore, the money they earn should be understood similarly to how we understand the money paid to a power plant: as a fair (actually quite minimal) payment on a good supplied and as a return on a risky investment, not as a “subsidy.”

Some perspective on subsidies is in order. We all have to pay subsidies to the established energy industries in America—that is, the ones that have been spewing climate-destabilizing gases into the atmosphere for the past few centuries, making clean energy necessary in the first place.

Myers said at the August meeting that the solar industry is no longer an infant industry and should “stand on its own two feet.” He should tell that to the shareholders of the oil, gas, and coal corporations that continue to collect lavish public subsidies in the form of century-old tax breaks, to the tune of about $20 billion a year, with a fifth of that going to coal and 80 percent going to natural gas and crude oil, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.

In fact, he might do well to remind himself once in a while about his own stated opposition to public subsidies for mature energy industries. In January, he voted for an “extension line allowance” for Southwest Gas, which imposes increased fees on existing customers to pay for a new natural-gas line, according to a report by 12 News. He justified that decision by pointing to the status quo, calling the deal “similar to line extension agreements virtually all utilities have.”

You may be wondering what that has to do with his principled opposition to subsidizing mature industries, which should “stand on [their] own two feet.” If so, we can’t help you there. Elected officials are expected to change the status quo to align it with their stated principles, not surrender to it with a shrug.

Let’s turn back to the issue at hand, the upcoming meeting. There is essentially zero chance that the commission will immediately act on Myers’ idea and cut the buyback rate by more than 10 percent on Oct.

11, in contravention of the 2017 agreement. But we have to acknowledge that by reopening the discussion that was supposedly resolved in 2017, the commission is embarking on a path that could take Arizona backwards, not forwards, in the state’s journey toward clean energy.

Berechet sees the potential for changes affecting not just prospective new investors in solar but also current system owners, ones who “locked in” their export rates by going solar before one of the commission’s yearly deadlines.

“There’s a slight chance that the deal in place for current system owners could be taken away,” Berechet said. “The whole thing could be wiped clean with a new program. The precedent could be overturned and their investments could completely go down the drain.”

The newly aggressive stance by the state’s anti-solar forces, as signaled by Myers’ proposal, raises tricky questions of strategy for green-energy advocates. If prosolar Arizonans try to counter the solar-suppression strategy with a mirror image, going on the offense by arguing that compensation for exported solar should be higher, it could be taken as support for renegotiating the prior deal, possibly assuring a process that could end up squelching future development of solar energy in Arizona. Potentially at stake is not only changing the rules for homeowners who want to add solar to homes going forward, but also for the over 100,000 Arizona homeowners who have already installed solar and were promised to be grandfathered in under certain rules.

“The jury’s out at this point about what we should do,” Berechet said. “Last meeting, we thought we would go there and would fight dropping the full ten percent. Essentially, Myers flipped it on us, and then we were begging for the ten percent.”

“It feels as if they changed the rules, as if they’ve moved the goal posts,” he added.

For solar-system owners, prospective owners, and supporters of the green-energy transition, the best approach is perhaps more simple and straightforward. “I think they should show up, and they should speak out about their investment in solar and what the actual value of solar is,” Berechet said.

It’s not too late to secure your energy future. Call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Arizona Fall League Action Heats Up at Peoria Sports Complex

BASEBALL FANS, REJOICE! As the summer heat starts to wane, the diamond at the Peoria Sports Complex is heating up with the return of the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Peoria Javelinas for the thrilling 2023 season.

Located at 16101 N. 83rd Ave., the Peoria Sports Complex is set to become the crucible for baseball’s up-andcoming stars. The AFL, every year, stands as a beacon for top prospects eager to sharpen their skills, showcasing their talent alongside and against fellow budding MLB stars. With each Major League team dispatching their seven most promising players, the AFL is less of a league and more of a treasure trove of baseball’s future.

For those new to the world of the AFL, envision it as a glimpse into what the future of MLB holds. It isn’t just about the thrill of the game but the sheer joy of potentially spotting a future All-Star, MVP, or even a Hall of Famer in their formative years. And, given that a significant 60% of AFL players eventually wear the Major League jersey, it’s no hyperbole to state that the future legends of the game are being forged right here.

In its illustrious history, the AFL has birthed 321 All-Stars, 19 MVPs, six Cy Young Award Winners, seven World Series MVPs, and a staggering 99 Silver Sluggers, 88 Gold

Gloves, and 30 Rookies of the Year. This year, at the MLB All-Star Game in Seattle, the league’s influence was unmistakable with 36 AFL alumni on the roster. The likes of Pete Alonso, Yordan Alvarez, and Nolan Arenado graced the field, with Elias Diaz snatching the All-Star MVP accolade.

But it’s not just about the grand stage. Closer to home, the Peoria Javelinas have their own roster of legends and stars. The list includes the likes of AFL Hall of Famers Mark Texeira and Todd Helton. Additionally, current sensations like Max Fried, Trent Grisham, Ronald Acuña Jr., and Julio Rodriguez have all, at some point, called Peoria Stadium their home.

With games scheduled from October 2 through November 11, the stage is set for a season of unparalleled baseball action. While most matches will commence at 6:30 p.m., fans are urged to check specific game times, which might vary.

Tickets are expected to go quickly, especially given the affordable pricing and the high-octane action on offer. So, if you’re keen to witness the future MLB stars in their prime, make your way to the Peoria Sports Complex. For more information, visit peoriasportscomplex.com/minorleagues/arizona-fall-league.

Supporting Local Farmers at Arizona Farmers Markets

WHEN BUYING PRODUCE IN ARIZONA, A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IS THAT OUR GROCERIES WERE GROWN ON FARMS IN CALIFORNIA. However, Arizona has roughly 20,000 farms that produce some of the state’s most demanded products, including cattle, dairy products, lettuce, hay, lemons, wheat, cantaloupes, spinach, and cauliflower.

Residents can support local farmers by shopping at farmers markets located around the Valley. Get Local AZ Farmers Markets, formerly known as Momma’s Organic Market, organizes two weekly markets showcasing the best of the community’s agricultural offerings. The newest market is every Sunday in North Peoria, located at 9621 W. Speckled Gecko Dr. and Saturday

in Arrowhead at 7780 W. Arrowhead Town Center.

Get Local AZ’s open-air markets include a popular farmer from Waddell, microgreen growers from Phoenix, ranchers from Araviapa and Alpine, a dairy farmer from Elfrida and more coming and going through the year, depending on the season.

These farmers provide a variety of produce at each market. The largest farmer, Fresh & Local TJ Farms, roasts fresh green chilies and peppers every Saturday and Sunday. In addition, other farmers provide raw milk, fresh sourdough bread, farm fresh eggs, local beef, pork, chicken, raw/ local honey, freshly made desserts, local butter, cheese, Keifer yogurt, and more.

Buying these products directly helps these farmers because farming is not the profes-

sion or industry it used to be. Commercial, subsidized farms have seemingly taken over. Supporting small businesses in your community ensures your dollars stay local and keeps these businesses alive.

The more a community invests in locally grown produce, dairy, meat, bread, eggs, honey, etc., the larger impact it makes for farmers right in your own backyard. Each farmer has their own unique story and is working hard every day because they want to provide quality products for their community.

For decades, weekend farmer’s markets have played a pivotal role in communities across the country. Many, such as ours, include high-quality products and activities to keep family members of all ages engaged. Get Local AZ Farmers Market welcomes everyone and wants

you to enjoy shopping and leave feeling good knowing that you are eating the freshest of produce and supporting other local families.

Running until November 4, this production promises to be an immersive experience, taking advantage of a cutting-edge LED wall that brings the world of Joseph to life in vivid, larger-than-life detail.

Derived from the pages of the “Book of Genesis,” the story follows Joseph, his doting father Jacob, 11 envious brothers, and of course, the famed coat of many colors. This epic tale of betrayal, dreams, and redemption is brought to life in a riot of color and humor. With the music genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber harmonizing with the story, audiences are in for an unforgettable treat.

Joseph’s gripping saga from being his father’s favored son to being sold into slavery and his eventual rise to become the Pharaoh’s trusted advisor is woven with

his unique gift for dream interpretation. Through trials, tribulations, and the brilliant tapestry of Webber’s music, Joseph’s journey is one of hope, faith, and triumph over adversity.

As is customary at the Arizona Broadway Theatre, the experience doesn’t just end with the show. Patrons can opt for the dinner & performance ticket, which includes a sumptuous meal beginning with a choice of soup or salad, followed by an entrée. Those attending the matinee can start their dining at 12 p.m., while evening enthusiasts can indulge from 5:30 p.m. onwards. Alternatively, for those looking to enjoy just the performance, the theatre offers a vibrant selection of specialty cocktails available for purchase in the lobby.

It’s not just the spectacular stage performances that make Arizona Broadway Theatre stand out; it’s the whole package. Their unique blend of dining and live entertainment creates a symphony of experiences that cater to all the senses. While performance-only tickets

are available, guests have the option of upgrading their experience to include the mainstage theatre dining. From appetizers to upgraded entrees, desserts, and an array of cocktails, there’s something to tantalize everyone’s taste buds.

With lyrics by Tim Rice and the inimitable melodies of Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a must-see this season. Those eager to witness this spectacle can purchase tickets online or reach out to the guest services at the box office either by phone (623-776-8400) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or in person during the same hours. Located at 7701 W. Paradise Lane, in Peoria, the theatre welcomes audiences seven days a week.

City News Arizona’s Motorcycle Safety Gets a Boost

AMSAF secures $100,000 for rider training scholarships.

THE SAFETY AND TRAINING OF ARIZONA’S MOTORCYCLISTS JUST GOT A SIGNIFICANT LIFT. The Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF) recently celebrated the acquisition of a $100,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (AZGOHS). This grant accentuates AZGOHS’s commitment to AMSAF’s objective: to elevate motorcycle awareness and consequently reduce rider fatalities and injuries.

According to Mick Degn, AMSAF’s executive director, the emphasis is on continuity. “Our enthusiasm about awarding scholarships for educating both new and ongoing riders remains steadfast,” he notes. Degn also takes a moment to acknowledge AZGOHS director Jesse Torrez, expressing gratitude for his unwavering support in this shared vision of motorbike safety in the state.

To paint a broader picture, this scholarship initiative isn’t AMSAF’s maiden voyage. They’ve been at this for a while, having provided an impressive tally of over 5,000 scholarships in Arizona geared toward rider education. But they’re not resting on their laurels. The grant will facilitate:

• The cultivation of distinctive partnerships with local businesses, eyeing the reduction of crashes and fatalities.

• Investigations pinpointing perilous intersections and road patches notorious for motorcycle mishaps.

• Encouragement for more Arizonians to undergo rider training through attractive discount enticements.

• Engaging influential industry collaborators to amplify AMSAF’s mission through diverse events and outreach.

It’s about making rider education accessible. An elementary rider course in Arizona can burden an individual with up to a staggering $350. But with the AMSAF scholarship, only a modest $100 non-refundable co-pay is required. A boon to every Arizonian motorbike enthusiast, details on availing of this scholarship are available at amsaf.org/scholarships.

Further, successfully clearing a rider’s skill course or mastering the in-person skills assessment is a pre-requisite for the motorcycle endorsement (M) on the Arizona state driver’s license. The cherry on top? Most major insurers roll out enticing policy discounts for those who’ve accomplished this safety and training course.

Whether you’re a newbie on two wheels or a seasoned rider wanting to sharpen those riding reflexes, the Basic Rider Course (BRC) endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is your go-to.

AMSAF stands tall as Arizona’s beacon for rider and driver safety. With the state witnessing an escalating number of motorcycle-involved crashes, approaching 3,000 annually, AMSAF’s dual approach - bolstering motorcycle awareness among drivers and top-notch safety training for riders - is more crucial than ever.

Hello Neighbor!

Weecks Productions, as the art director, for almost a decade. Dan has created quite the media empire providing live streaming services for life events like funerals and bar/bat mitzvahs, and event photography, and has built out a roster of government contracts over the years. Working side-byside in a creative role with him has been a wonderful experience and is much better than butting heads during his teenage years!

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my dogs. Our dogs have always been like family to us. I've lost count of all the cherished pets we've had over the years, but each one has held a special place in my heart.

HI, MY NAME IS… John Weecks.

I LIVE IN PEORIA AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the climate in the wintertime. When I moved out here it was during a winter snowstorm on the East Coast where I lived at the time, so Arizona was a welcomed reprieve.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… being in the workshop creating pieces of art, making wood carvings, restoring furniture, whatever comes my way. Every day is different, and I occasionally teach community workshops at retirement communities through their activities departments, give technique demonstrations at tradeshows like the Desert Woodcarvers expos, or visit clients’ houses to help them customize, upgrade, or repair their one-of-a-kind art furniture.

MY FAMILY IS… the most important thing in my life and that's what the world revolves around. After a long day in the studio, just seeing my family's smiling faces gives me a renewed sense of purpose and energy. Their sheer joy and enthusiasm for my artistic pursuits keep me motivated. I have had the pleasure to work with my son Dan for his company,

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… would probably be “Young Frankenstein.” It's just such a wonderful parody of the original Mary Shelley story done in black and white and it's just a classic.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an artist. My first woodcarving was kind of a Boy Scout manual. When I was probably 12 years old, I had just gotten a pocket knife with a very sharp blade. Within about two hours, I had managed to cut my finger to the bone and was rushed to the doctor’s. So that was my first experience at carving.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… that would be a ‘no.’ I don't do karaoke. The closest I might ever get is “One Hundred Bottles of Beer on the Wall.”

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my wife, Debbie. She has been an invaluable source of support and motivation throughout my artistic career. Even after all these years together, she still inspires me to push myself creatively. I can always count on her honest feedback on works in progress. She has a great eye and will point out areas I can refine or details I may have overlooked, and her expertise as an attorney helps with the business side when they’re completed. Debbie also reminds me to stay true to my own vision. When I start doubting myself or wavering from my intentions for a piece, she stays on my case to tune out any outside expectations and follow my instincts.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… this morning. I was watching a video on gold leafing, and they said not to touch the gold leafing because there’s oil on your hands. But at the same time, the guy was using steel wool which has oil in it to preserve the metal from rusting. That's pretty niche and definitely artist humor but was a good chuckle.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… one with cool temperatures, hot coffee, and a nice dinner. A gentle breeze and clear skies can set the ideal backdrop for a leisurely stroll with my dogs, yard work, or starting a plein air painting.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Reframe to Reform (reframetoreform. org). It was started during the pandemic by Callie, a licensed master social worker in the Valley who isn’t even 30 years old yet! R2R is tackling the huge issue of mass incarceration in this country and changing the conversation and

public understanding. Its mission is to promote a society where those who face incarceration can be heard, valued, and understood. Society has often told us that these individuals mattered as children, but they are here to say that these individuals still matter today even as adults. Incarceration does not denote an individual’s self-worth but is often the snapshot of the worst moment of peoples’ lives, which dictates their and their families’ entire future.

MY LIFE IS… ideal.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… my son, Dan.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… going back to Austria to visit family would be my dream vacation. Visiting Austria is a profoundly meaningful experience for me. I was born in a small town south of Graz, Austria, and still have close family members there. So returning to Austria would allow me to reconnect with my roots. Exploring the streets I roamed as a child and the countryside where my ancestors lived fills me with nostalgia.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… do what you like to do, and don’t take life for granted! This is a theme consistent throughout my artwork and is a theme which has shaped much of what I create.

Mountain Ridge High vs. Glendale PD: Hoops for Special Olympics!

Mountain Ridge High School staff are gearing up to face an unexpected opponent on the basketball court -- the Glendale Police Department. Set for Friday, Oct. 13, at 11:30 a.m., this isn’t just any ordinary basketball game. The event aims to raise funds for the Arizona Special Olympics, showcasing the spirit of partnership and community between local schools and law enforcement.

appearance, adding a dose of NBA flair to the event. And for one Special Olympic basketball player and devout Suns fan from Mountain Ridge High, the Gorilla has some special surprises in store.

This collaborative event serves not just as a fundraiser, but as a symbol of the community’s commitment to supporting the Special Olympics and fostering bonds between institutions. With the promise of thrilling basketball action and heartwarming moments, it’s a game you won’t want to miss!

Barro’s & Dr. Pepper's $10,000 Tuition Giveaway Returns Applications for the prize money now open.

Barro’s Pizza is once again joining hands with Dr. Pepper to grant $10,000 to one Arizona resident through the 2023 Barro’s Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway. The prize aims to support a student's college expenses. Through December 17 of this year, entrants can text BARROS to 737737 for a chance to win the tuition award.

"Our partnership showcases our mutual commitment to fostering young talent," says Bruce Barro, Barro’s Pizza owner. "Each year, we're proud to collaborate with Dr. Pepper to provide $10,000 to a deserving student, helping them focus on academics without financial stress. Community support is at the heart of our family and business values."

Barro’s Pizza is a family-owned and operated pizza restaurant with 48 locations in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties. The Barro’s Pizza recipe comes from Grandma Angelina Barro who came from Italy in the 1930s, making a pizza unlike any other. People may disagree on whether it's the thick crust with its light, flakey texture, or the tangy and sweet spiced sauce that is the secret of this

great tasting pizza. Barro’s Pizza also offers wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, gluten-free pizza options, dessert, beer and wine.

Since its inception in 2012, the Barro’s Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway has granted $105,000 to Arizona students. Eligibility includes Arizona residents 17 years and above who are or will be attending a qualified institution. A random draw will determine the winner from text entries. Prize money can be used for tuition, books, or settling student loan debts.

Barry Goldwater Senior Earns Spot in Prestigious Bezos Scholars Program

Photos courtesy of Deer Valley Unified School District

Adistinction has been bestowed upon Barry Goldwater High School’s senior Brendan Salisbury. He stands as the only student from Arizona chosen as a 2023 Bezos Scholar, marking only the second time a student from the state has been selected in the program’s history.

This elite recognition is only given to 12 students across the United States, and Salisbury will be joining the ranks alongside his nominated supporting educator, Victoria E. Muñoz.

The Bezos Scholars Program (BSP), founded in 2005 by Jackie and Mike Bezos, is not just another student accolade. It offers a year-long leadership development program, providing students the resources and training to implement projects that stimulate positive change in their communities.

Salisbury’s inclusion in this elite cohort resonates with his fervor for community engagement, especially in the realm of mental health. He has expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges of teenage mental health and his visionary approach to establish wellness centers across all Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) high school campuses. This passion does not end there. Salisbury envisions a nationwide

initiative: a joint foundation between state hospitals and their respective neurological institutes, designed to foster research and holistic treatment centers for those with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

On his selection, an elated Salisbury comments, “I am ecstatic to not only make an impact on my community but take part in an international effort to improve our world. I cannot wait to see what scholars are able to accomplish this coming year.”

The multifaceted senior is not just confined to academia and advocacy. Salisbury’s interests sprawl across a gamut of activities. Whether it’s hip hop dancing, horse riding, or being a part of Arizona’s All-State Show Choir, Salisbury exemplifies versatility. Fluent in Spanish, he celebrates the multicultural upbringing he’s been privileged with.

Muñoz, known as Vicky, will guide Salisbury through the BSP journey. An IB Spanish teacher and World Languages Department Chair at Barry Goldwater High School, her story began in El Salvador. She migrated to the U.S. at 14. Her passion for global cultures resonates in her teaching methods, and her commitment to the environment is evident as the Eco-Squad sponsor at her school.

The Bezos Scholars Program experience begins with virtual community-building exercises, followed by an all-expenses-paid trip to the Aspen Ideas Festival. Here, students undergo rigorous leadership training, panel discussions, and engage in conversations with acclaimed global leaders. Following this intensive experience, scholars are tasked with launching sustainable community projects, transforming their communities one step at a time.

These projects, unique to each scholar’s passion and community’s need, span a range of issues. From the climate crisis, gender and education equality to financial literacy, these initiatives have been addressing some of the most pressing concerns of our time. Since its inception, nearly 200 projects have been greenlit, thanks to the BSP.

In the upcoming spring, Salisbury’s accomplishments will lead him to the White House, where he’ll be meeting President Biden and Vice President Harris to discuss his trailblazing project on mental health.

For those eager to track the success and journey of Salisbury and other Bezos Scholars, the Bezos Scholars Program remains a testament to the belief that young minds can, and will, shape the future.

ANTI-GRAVITY GYROS Kids’ Corner

Gravity got you down? Explore ways to overcome it by building and testing an anti-gravity device. Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Inertia, or Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that objects at rest tend to

stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion (unless acted on by an outside force). Centripetal forces are any forces (gravitational, electrical/atomic, or tension) that move inward, toward the fixed center of the circular motion. In this activity, the string attached to the cup creates a centripetal force and

when the circular motion of the cup moves faster than the horizontal motion (inertia) of the water/objects. As a result, the water/objects stay in the cup.

SUPPLIES

• A 9 oz. paper or plastic cup

• One (1) sharpened pencil

• One to five (1-5) pennies or marbles

• Water

• Two 2-ft. long pieces of string

HOW TO

1. Using the pencil, punch one hole in the cup ½ inch below the rim.

2. Punch a second hole on the opposite side of the cup ½ inch below the rim.

3. Thread one piece of string through each hole and tie them off.

4. Place pennies, marbles, or water in the cup.

5. Investigate how you can prevent the materials from falling out of the cup when upside down.

Repeat steps four through five with pennies, marbles, and water.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

1. What direction does gravity point?

2. What is inertia?

3. What things resist the force of gravity by moving in the opposite direction?

4. How can you prevent gravity from making the water spill out of the cup when it is turned upside down without placing your hand over the top of the cup?

5. When you tested your anti-gravity device, what was it that prevented the penny, marble, or water from spilling out?

You can learn a bunch more about gravity and more when you visit the Arizona Science Center. Be sure to stop by the Dorrance Planetarium and Forces of Nature! Visit azscience.org for more information!

MITCHELL CHIROPRACTIC: PIONEERING WHOLE-BODY WELLNESS BEYOND BACK AND NECK PAIN

Many people think chiropractors only help solve neck and back pain. As a high school varsity and collegiate soccer player, Dr. Scott Mitchell learned the remedy much more with his first sports injury — a sprained ankle.

“I didn’t realize a chiropractor could work on something like that, but he adjusted my ankle, and I was able to return to sports faster than in the past,” Dr. Mitchell explains. He says chiropractic care is unique compared to the traditional medical system. After his first injury in high school, he’d go to the chiropractor for natural approaches to heal injuries and for injury prevention versus the general physician who would prescribe pain medication.

Inspired by his experience, Dr. Mitchell earned his Doctor of Chiropractic after graduating from ASU. He began his career as an independent contractor before opening his practice in 2009.

Today, Mitchell Chiropractic in Peoria aims to be the West Valley’s go-to place for people to receive the most advanced chiropractic care and for help living their best lives.

“A lot of patients visit a chiropractor for a spine problem and realize our care can improve the function of the central nervous system, which controls every vital function of the body,” says Dr. Mitchell.

He’s worked with professional Ironman athletes and the Seattle Sounders and Columbus Crew professional soccer teams. Dr. Mitchell says athletes can’t always avoid getting hurt during games, but they’ll handle any blows better if everything functions correctly.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT MITCHELL CHIROPRACTIC

Whether a new patient is a professional athlete, recovering from a car accident, or has lower back pain or neck pain that can cause headaches and migraines, their first visit begins with a detailed health history and a physical examination.

“Our assessment goes beyond pain; we help to optimize function and life goals — whether new patients want to exercise more, sleep better, or be more productive at work,” explains Dr. Mitchell. “We work to get them functioning better to improve their overall quality of life.”

Unique to Mitchell Chiropractic is an X-ray motion study, which gives a highly detailed view of the patient’s joints while in motion. With better information from these X-rays, Dr. Mitchell says he knows where to focus his efforts. “We can see areas that aren’t functioning correctly, and later in the patient’s care, we can retake the X-ray motion study to show improvements. In addition to assessing the movement of the spine, we can also detect problems that may not be causing symptoms at the time so that patients can be proactive with their health.”

After studying the patient’s health history and reading X-rays, Mitchell Chiropractic gives an initial adjustment to improve nervous system strength and creates a

customized care plan. “Every patient is unique,” says Dr. Mitchell. “We find the best treatment for each person to bring long-lasting relief; we don’t do patchwork.”

Dr. Mitchell says they provide care from “the womb to the tomb,” as even babies need gentle chiropractic care after birth, to improve their sleep, or to help with colic.

CHIROPRACTIC AFTER A CAR ACCIDENT?

Mitchell Chiropractic understands the complexities of personal injury cases and takes pride in managing them thoroughly. “We have to take a different assessment on these patients because there are a lot of layers to their injuries,” says Dr. Mitchell.

Mitchell Chiropractic steps in after the initial care to target the pain and underlying issues, giving patients long-term recovery from their accident injuries. “Medication is only going to mask —not correct — any problems,” Dr. Mitchell says.

“Our office has well-established relationships with orthopedists, neurologists, MRI facilities, and physical therapists to offer the best and most complete care for acute trauma injuries,” says Dr. Mitchell, adding that they’re comfortable speaking with personal injury lawyers. Mitchell Chiropractic also analyzes, diagnoses, and treats the various complexities of whiplash and soft tissue injuries.

THE ROLE OF NUTRITION AND FITNESS

Patients of Mitchell Chiropractic learn about real health, which comes from moving well, eating well, and thinking well. Dr. Mitchell says that there is no magic pill for real health.

“We provide specific recommendations on nutritional supplements, healthy food choices, and fitness recommendations to enhance our patients’ return to optimal health.”

CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR OVERALL HEALTH

In addition, Mitchell Chiropractic helps its patients adapt to their environment. Dr. Mitchell says daily stress negatively impacts overall health, so one of the practice’s main objectives is to help patients determine what stress is affecting their health and help them adapt to those stressors better.

“We give patients homework, so they learn how to care for themselves. Ultimately, we want patients to control and make their health care decisions.” Mitchell Chiropractic also provides advanced workshops and resources about general and spinal health.

“One of my main goals with every patient is to get them off unnecessary drugs and to avoid surgeries,” says Dr. Mitchell. “I love seeing the results in people’s lives, such as when the quality of their life improves because they’re getting better sleep. That spills over to every part of their life.”

Dr. Mitchell says he and his team are looking forward to holding a patient appreciation week where they’ll give raffle prizes and host a party. “We appreciate our patients so much; they’re why we’re here.”

Peoria Paves Way for Safety with Upcoming Public Safety Hub

The city of Peoria has announced plans to prioritize public safety. As part of a vast 7,100-acre masterplanned community in north Peoria, a joint public safety facility is set to be established.

Positioned north of the Central Arizona Project, east of Vistancia Boulevard, and just south of Twin Buttes Road, the facility aims to be a stronghold of safety. It’s designed to house a fire station, complete with up to five bays for catering to fire and medical needs, and a police substation to support the anticipated growth in the area.

The project, a partnership between the city and Vistancia Development LLC, has a committed budget of $20.65 million. Funding sources for the project include impact fees, general obligation bonds, and a segment from the city’s general fund.

“Rapid emergency response is critical for our public safety crews to ensure life-saving emergencies result in positive outcomes,” says Peoria Mayor Jason Beck. “I’m proud of this partnership with Vistancia that will assist in our city’s commitment to keep public safety a top priority.”

This future hub of safety will be strategically located next to the upcoming 2.5-acre Twin Buttes Preserve Trailhead. A hiking trail system nestled amidst the picturesque mountainous regions will offer both residents and visitors a blend of nature and safety. Upon completion, the facility will also feature parking for 12 vehicles, shade ramadas, and a water station. The project will also include the extension of Twin Buttes Road that would occur simultaneously with the public safety building and

trailhead construction to minimize redundancies and construction costs.

“We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with the city of Peoria to offer the highest quality services and amenities to support our growing community,” says Mark Hammons, general manager of Vistancia. “The facility site is centrally located and will enhance the services already established to serve our residents and greater Peoria area.”

Although final designs for the facility are still being finetuned, construction is projected to commence in the fiscal year 2025. With an objective of cost-efficiency, the extension of Twin Buttes Road is planned to coincide with the construction of the public safety building and trailhead.

Design of the Joint Public Safety Facility is underway with planned completion this fiscal year supporting construction in fiscal year 2025.

Navigating Arizona’s Real Estate Market A

buyer’s

market amid rising interest rates.

Over the past 18 months, as interest rates have risen, we’ve noticed a corresponding drop in home prices. And just like our longawaited cooler temperatures, this is a refreshing change for prospective buyers!

Now, many buyers are not only capitalizing on these lower prices but also benefiting from seller concessions. These concessions can cover closing costs, contribute to an interest rate buydown, or sometimes both.

What does using a seller’s concession mean? It can result in a permanent rate reduction or a 2-1 buydown. The latter signifies that in the first year, your interest rate will be 2% lower than the prevailing one. Such reductions can lead to significant monthly savings. It also provides a comfortable window for interest rates to decrease further, allowing homeowners to refinance.

Despite sellers having to be more generous in this shifting market, it’s worth noting that many homeowners have amassed considerable equity during their ownership period. Due to the consistent, often double-digit, increase in home prices annually (and occasionally monthly) for the past five years or so, sellers find themselves in a favorable position in terms of equity when they decide to sell. True, the profits might not be as substantial as they would’ve been 15 months ago, but for those who’ve had their homes for several years, the returns remain promising.

To provide some perspective, when I began my real estate career, annual property value increases hovered around 3% to 4%. Selling a home two years post-purchase would just about cover fees, leaving a modest profit. However, in most of the last decade, we’ve seen such explosive growth that homeowners have come to expect

returns exceeding 10% annually –sometimes even 10% monthly!

Switching gears, a noticeable uptick in buyer cancellations was observed last month. Contrary to the ‘cold feet’ theory proposed in some articles, I attribute this trend to the sudden spike in interest rates. Buyers often get prequalified based on current rates, which can’t be locked in until a contract is finalized. If a buyer commits to a home, and the rates surge even by just a quarter of a percent before the lock-in, they might find themselves no longer qualifying. Hence, it’s crucial for sellers and their agents to discuss rate lock-ins with potential buyers and their lenders early in the process. I’ve witnessed instances where buyers opted to delay their lock-in, only to be thwarted by escalating rates – a gamble that doesn’t always pay off.

The essence is clear. If you’re in the market to buy, you’re likely to get a favorable deal and substantial negotiating power, making this a golden opportunity. Plus, once you’ve secured a property at a lowered rate, you can always refinance when the rates drop again.

As always, if you have any real estaterelated queries or need referrals for various services, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. And remember, Arizona’s pleasant winter is why so many choose our state. Make the most of the upcoming six months!

Thunderbirds Charities Grants $17,000 to Benevilla for Memory Lane

Games Tool to Enhance Cognitive Stimulation in Members

Benevilla was recently awarded a $17,000 grant from Thunderbirds Charities to adopt a new technology software program called Memory Lane Games, to further improve the quality of life of their program members. A personalized “reminiscence” platform, it enhances cognitive stimulation and provides an entertaining and therapeutic experience to individuals living with dementia.

“Benevilla is doing great work in our community for those living with dementia and their families,” says Thunderbirds Charities President Pat Williams. “This new technology will provide another way for families to engage and connect with their loved ones in a meaningful way.”

Benevilla has three dementia centered Life Enrichment Day programs: Lucy Anne’s Place on the Benevilla main campus for members with light to moderate levels of dementia, Mary’s Place in Sun City for members with moderate to advance levels of dementia, and West Valley Life Enrichment located in Peoria. Entertainment, education, games, creative aging, crafts, gardening, community outings, and exercise fill the daily agenda of the three programs. Members are involved and help direct

their daily activities. Indoor and outdoor spaces offer inviting opportunities for group activities or private time, just like home.

Memory Lane Games supports the Benevilla care mission of enriching lives in several ways. It promotes personcentered care, encourages a sense of self, and supports and reinforces personal history and interests. This new software improves family connections, creating engagements which are meaningful and joyful for everyone and provides personalized family reporting. Caregivers like the system as it calms and distracts agitated individuals so therapeutic or medical care can be provided.

“They love the questions, photos, and ease of use. The layout and text are colorful yet simple. Each quiz is short and has no time limits which is perfect for them,” says the caregiver of a loved one with dementia.

The grant will provide application access for 40 program members across the three Benevilla Life Enrichment programs. Specifically, the grant support will pay for monthly memberships, the purchase of iPads for the programs, and the application training for staff and family members.

“Benevilla would like to thank Thunderbird Charities for their support of this exciting new program,” says Benevilla Senior Director of Enrichment Lisa Minette. “Through their kindness, not only will our members benefit from using Memory Lane Games, but our families will be blessed with a more positive experience working with their loved ones with dementia.”

A simple, yet sophisticated user interface, the application can be used on a dedicated iPad to upload personal photos or be customized with a specific topic or location with corresponding information (e.g., 1950s, music of the ’60s, a specific hometown, TV shows, or movies). In addition, the application can be used by members at one of the program locations and at home as well on their personal devices. In some cases, the interface can be life changing. For example, an elderly gentleman in a memory care setting had been nonverbal for three years. After introducing the Memory Lane Games, with customized music for his age and era, he started singing along with the songs.

For more information about the Benevilla Life Enrichment Day programs or to see the Memory Lane Games platform in action, call 623-584-4999.

Community Phoenix Theatre Group Delights People Living with Dementia

It’s a little magical how a small theater troupe can walk through the door and instantly transform the space around them.

That’s exactly what five talented actors do so effortlessly as part of Phoenix Theatre’s Partners That Heal program. They travel all over the Valley, using improv, music, storytelling, and movement to engage and delight audiences of every age and ability.

Recently, they visited Hospice of the Valley’s new Dementia Care and Education Campus in central Phoenix. They spent time with residents at the assisted living center, members of the adult day club and preschoolers in the adjoining child center. Working in perfect harmony, they lead people who are living with dementia on a spontaneous journey that unlocks their imaginations.

“We all have that child inside of us and we let them be kids again. We give them a chance to play,” says PTH member Mike Lawler. “And we feel like we’re part of the care team.”

Marshal Glass agrees. “This light goes on inside of them and it’s just wonderful to see. Then the staff tells us the patient’s never done that before!”

The actors harness joy by sparking happy memories with familiar songs and stories.

“We come in and people who are showing no emotion or expression immediately start remembering moments,” shares Sally Jo Bannow. “Somehow, it taps into their imagination and creativity.”

“We want to get a smile on people’s faces. I get chills just thinking about it,” Kim Manning gushes. “That’s the whole reason we’re here.”

“You can tell they’re so connected and

waiting for more,” adds Brian Sweis. “It’s so rewarding, and we just feel honored to be a part of that.”

Partners That Heal has visited more than 70,000 people in our community over the last decade. “They appeal to preschoolers; they appeal to someone who’s in their 70s and 80s with dementia. They meet everyone where they’re at,” says Dementia Campus Enrichment Coordinator Angela Hofler.

“Their stories might be about someone’s favorite animal, or maybe we’re all going on an African safari, and the next minute we’re waterskiing in the ocean having ice cream. They bring so much fun to us. We are lucky to have them spreading their magic and touching so many lives!”

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

The third installment in this series once again delivers what fans expect: Denzel Washington brutalizing bad guys in unique and gory ways. This time around, director Antoine Fuqua infuses the action scenes with a horror-like atmosphere, showing McCall stalking his prey from the shadows and using distorted angles, thanks to the work of DP Robert Richardson. This approach helps the film stand out from its predecessors, even though it sometimes reverts to a more conventional style in certain scenes and exhibits pacing issues reminiscent of earlier installments. Intriguingly, the film also delves into the deeper aspects of McCall's character, questioning if he can ever find true peace and whether there's more to his life than violence. These reflective moments create a striking contrast to the film's brutal scenes. This is arguably the best installment of the series, and it could serve as a fitting conclusion.

ON HULU

performances as surprisingly welldeveloped characters, especially given the film's brief duration. The movie serves as a testament to what can be achieved with limited resources and time. I eagerly anticipate Rodriguez's next project.

“Bottoms”

A group of girls start a fight club to try to get with their crushes.

“Bottoms” is a true-blue contender for the title of most anarchic movie of the year, given the reality it presents. Every character and scenario is exaggerated to the max, and it’s an absolute blast to watch everyone adopt the most extreme approaches to everything, from singing to fighting. The superb cast sells it all, from leads Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri to even the minor background characters. Emma Seligman's direction is simpler compared to her debut, "Shiva Baby," but it complements the tone of the film. The visuals and tropes of a typical comedy (paired with a familiar soundtrack) contrast sharply with the Mad Max-esque actions on screen. It's a truly unique and entertaining piece.

“The Equalizer 3”

Robert McCall finds himself defending a small Italian town from the mafia.

“Miguel

Wants to Fight”

A young man wants to get in a fight before his life goes through a major change.

Short and sweet aptly describes Oz Rodriguez's new movie. At its core, the film presents a moral tale about the perils of succumbing to peer pressure and allowing fiction to shape one's worldview. Rodriguez adeptly navigates the young cast through two contrasting styles: reality and imagination, which feel like distinct films yet seamlessly blend together. This is not to undermine the cast's contribution; they certainly hold their own, delivering heartfelt

“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”

Two BFFs find their friendship tested against the dangers of middle school drama.

A more traditional comedy, this film isn't particularly memorable, but it's not bad either. Sunny and Sadie Sandler are the clear standouts of the movie. The latter's deadpan delivery and the former's exaggerated humor truly make them shine. The film's primary drawback is its repetitiveness, often recycling the same beats to pad its runtime. Its structure is peculiar, seemingly introducing specific plot points either too early or too late. While I appreciate its attempts at originality and its refreshing depiction of Judaism compared to other

Frosty Fairytale in the Desert Christmas magic at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.

Amidst the sun-soaked vistas of Scottsdale, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is gearing up to transport its visitors to a twinkling winter wonderland. As the calendar pages flutter towards the end of the year, Christmas at the Princess returns, and this time, it promises a sprinkle of extra festive magic.

Now, if you think you've experienced all that Christmas at the Princess has to offer, 2023 has a frosty surprise in store. Introducing Aurora Ice: Scottsdale's dreamy escape into an Arctic paradise. Shed the desert warmth, don an ultra-plush faux fur parka, and immerse yourself in an icy wonderland. Imagine stepping into a realm where the temperature is a crisp zero degrees, and the ambiance dances with the mesmerizing hues of the Northern Lights. Here, the walls tell tales of hand-chiseled ice artistry, where every sculpture promises a photo op fit for a festive postcard. Engage in the merriment of 'reindeer games' — where the spirit of woodland caribou ensures a blend of laughter and friendly competition. And, as the evening matures, sidle up to the ice bar. Let the warm embrace of hot craft cocktails melt away any lingering frost, creating moments that are both heartwarming and chill.

Early birds, rejoice! Through October 31, Arizona's favorite Christmas attraction is presenting a holiday deal to make even Santa envious. Imagine cozying up in the resort’s luxurious rooms with a generous 40% off on overnight stays or exploring the enchanting property with 30% off admission tickets. But that's just the beginning. The brand-new, shimmering Aurora Ice Lounge + Chill Experience is up for grabs at a cool 40% discount, while the whimsical Ultimate Santa Experience sees a cheerful 30% slashed off. And for those who love snuggling beside the fire? Discounts are warming up fire pits, ensuring your evenings are toasty and memorable.

Special mention to the loyalists: if you’re an ALL Loyalty Member, the sleigh of offers comes to your doorstep even earlier. And if not? Well, there's no time like the present to join this merry brigade and secure a festive first-row seat.

This year's offer isn't merely about savings; it's an engraved invitation to begin festive celebrations with flair. To secure not just discounts, but moments. Moments that, ensconced in the lap of luxury and festive brilliance, promise to turn into cherished memories.

So, what are you waiting for? The yuletide magic at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess beckons. A blend of tradition, innovation, and sheer festive joy, it's an event that guarantees stories, laughter, and a sparkle that'll light up your holiday season.
