TRASH AND RECYCLING DAYS CHANGE THIS MONTH FOR MANY RESIDENTS

Beginning November 1, most Scottsdale trash and recycling residential customers will have a new pick-up day. Scottsdale will now pick up recycling and trash five days a week. To achieve this, about 95 percent of Scottsdale residents will have a change to trash and/or recycling curbside days. The primary reason for this day of service change is to improve efficiency and make it easier to process recyclables. Current trash and recycling routes have become unbalanced due to the growth of the city. The new collection schedule is based on the number of homes on a route and the amount/weight of solid waste and recycling collected.

Operating more efficiently means the city can balance the size of collection routes to provide more consistent service, preserve the longevity of collection vehicles by carrying the right sized loads, and not overload our recycling processing center. These changes will not affect planned solid waste rate increases and should help stabilize future rates. To determine your new collection days, visit ScottsdaleAZ. gov, search “Collection Day,” then find your service area on the map or use the Find My Service Day Tool, also found on the website. Residents can also call the city of Scottsdale at 480-312-5353.

CITY SEEKS INPUT ON AMENDMENTS TO PUBLIC SAFETY PLAN ORDINANCE

On Sept. 10, 2013, the Scottsdale City Council approved a Public Safety Plan Ordinance. The purpose of this ordinance is to promote the general health, safety and welfare of our community by requiring certain types of businesses to file, follow and keep current a public safety plan. The ordinance also requires mandatory training for security personnel. The ordinance went into effect on Oct. 10, 2013.

On August 26, 2021, the City Council, after a presentation on the status of the Public Safety Plan Ordinance, voted to direct the City Manager, in consultation with the City Attorney, to return to the City Council with recommended amendments to the Public Safety Plan Ordinance and conduct related public outreach as expeditiously as possible.

Scottsdale residents are invited to review the draft ordinance amendments at ScottsdaleAZ.gov and provide comments by Nov. 30 to the Scottsdale Police Department’s Public Information Office by email at PIO@ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

The Wandering Donkey Taqueria and Tequila Bar Quickly Becoming a North Scottsdale Favorite

Photos Courtesy of The Wandering Donkey Taqueria and Tequila Bar WHILE THE WANDERING DONKEY FOOD TRUCK BRAND WAS ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED IN 2012, ITS BRICK-AND-MORTAR LOCATION, THE WANDERING DONKEY TAQUERIA AND TEQUILA BAR, IS NOW OPEN AT 10121 E. BELL ROAD IN NORTH SCOTTSDALE.

Proprietors Lance and Beth Smith share that, for those who might have first discovered the Wandering Donkey by visiting the truck, there is a replica food truck inside the restaurant with the original menu option where customers can build their own burritos, bowls, street tacos, and more. In addition, there is the creative, sit-down menu representing elevated regional fare from various states of Mexico along with an array of craft margaritas, and some of the finest tequila brands to sip or shoot.

The interior is lively with color: patrons can admire the work of local artist, Leila Parnian, who has created murals and a custom bar that’s a real showstopper.

“People come in just for that bar top,” Lance says. “It’s beautiful. Leila does graffiti art and created three different wonderful murals on the walls with cans of spray paint, though you’d never know that’s what it is.”

He adds that more art will be added to the expansive patio with fire pit.

“We believe in quality,” says Beth. “Our ingredients are held to the highest standards and customers know they’re getting food and drinks that tastes exceptionally good and are being made with the best ingredients. We feel that the Wandering Donkey Taqueria and Tequila Bar is an extension of our home, and we strive to make all of our guests as comfortable and as happy as possible. One thing is for sure: you will leave with a well satisfied belly and look forward to returning soon!”

Bashas’ Enters Agreement for a New Chapter of Growth

BASHAS’ FAMILY OF STORES RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS SIGNED A DEFINITIVE AGREEMENT TO BE ACQUIRED BY RALEY’S HOLDING COMPANY, AN INDEPENDENT REGIONAL GROCER BASED IN CALIFORNIA.

The agreement brings together two leading grocers with rich legacies and shared values: employee achievement, exceptional customer service, and a deep commitment to local communities, according to both grocers.

In a joint presentation, Edward “Trey” Basha, president and chief executive officer of Bashas’, and Keith Knopf, president and chief executive officer of Raley’s Holding Company, informed Bashas’ members that Bashas’ store banners, employment, and operations across Arizona will continue without change or interruption.

Trey, who is also the grandson of the company’s co-founder, says, “The announcement represents the beginning of Bashas’ next exciting chapter as a fully formed operating company within the larger Raley’s enterprise. In Raley’s we will have a partner who will ensure we continue delivering exceptional customer and member experiences at a time when regional grocery competition has never been tougher – while staying true to the values that have shaped our history over 90 years.”

“Customers, members, and local Arizona communities will also benefit from the seamless alignment of culture and values that we share with Raley’s,” he continues. “While the Basha family will no longer have ownership roles, we look forward to seeing the business thrive for generations to come.”

“This marks an important milestone in the ongoing legacy of two great companies. We are humbled to assume stewardship of the Bashas’ organization. Raley’s history of respecting the legacy of the brands we acquire assures continuity for Bashas’ customers, employees, and business partners and, on behalf of our 13,000 employees, I want to welcome Bashas’ team members to our organization,” says Keith Knopf. “The Bashas’ company is strong and well-positioned in the market. We are confident that with our robust digital capabilities and combined purchasing power we can further enhance the overall customer experience.”

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AGREEMENT:

• Bashas’ will continue to serve customers across Arizona and New Mexico and its

Tribal Nation partners. • Bashas’ will be a fully formed operating company within the Raley’s enterprise and will maintain its corporate headquarters, stores, and distribution center in Arizona. • The transaction will protect the store banners customers know and love with no changes to local store leadership. • There are no planned changes to employee roles, compensation, or benefits because of the transaction. In this transaction, The Food Partners served as strategic and financial advisor to Raley’s, and Snell & Wilmer served as legal counsel to Raley’s. Citi served as a strategic and financial advisor, and Burch & Cracchiolo, P.A. served as lead legal counsel for Bashas’. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2021.

North Scottsdale Walk for Parkinson’s Set for November 13

By Anne Prine Photo by Carol Creekman ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, THE N. SCOTTSDALE MOVERS AND SHAKERS TEAM WILL WALK FOR PARKINSON’S IN NORTH SCOTTSDALE IN SUPPORT OF THE THIRD ANNUAL MOVING DAY PHOENIX FUNDRAISING EFFORT.

The local walk will cover a 1.3-mile, easyterrain course through the Terravita community and nature trail. The walk starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Terravita Country Club and will be followed by a group lunch on the club’s patio.

Those interested in walking with the Movers and Shakers team are asked to donate any amount to support the work of the Parkinson’s Foundation. (The team gratefully acknowledges the many who have already donated.) Contact Team Co-Captain Cathy Boss-Fessel at cboss20@gmail.com to sign up for the walk and lunch.

Moving Day is part of a nationwide series of awareness-building fundraisers to benefit the Parkinson’s Foundation, whose goal is to make life better for the one million Americans living with Parkinson’s. In Arizona alone, some 18,000 people struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Across the nation, around 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The Valley-wide Moving Day Phoenix event will take place Saturday, November 6 at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. The Movers and Shakers team will also walk at the Tempe event.

FUNDRAISER NETS $4,000 FOR PARKINSON’S

The Movers and Shakers kicked off this year’s Moving Day events at a “Meet the Artists” art and wine reception held at JoyEful Gallery – Joye DeGoede Fine Art, El Pedregal at The Boulders Resort on Saturday, October 9. The event drew almost 70 attendees and raised $4,000 for the Parkinson’s Foundation, bringing the team very close to its $20,000 goal for 2021 at press time.

Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses including gallery host Joye DeGoede – JoyEful Party Animals, The Boulders Resort & Spa, Hyde Park Interiors, Stefan Mann at El Pedregal, Clear Dermatology & Aesthetics Center, Salon Mila, HarumiYoga+, Spotted Donkey Cantina, Merle Norman Studio, Spa Splendore at The Summit, Cave Creek Olive Oil, and more.

SUCCESS IN 2020

“Last year, in spite of COVID, we raised almost $15,000,” says team founder and co-captain Cathy Boss-Fessel.

“While the Valley-wide event went virtual, I credit much of our success to an inperson walk within our own community,” Boss-Fessel says. “So, we decided to do another local walk in 2021, and we will also participate in the Valley-wide Moving Day Phoenix event in Tempe.”

Team Co-captain and Boulders resident Jennifer Campbell, who also serves on the Parkinson’s Advisory Board for the Southwest Region, says, “Fundraising to support Parkinson’s research is deeply personal for me. My brother Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when he turned 50, 17 years ago. This is considered young adult onset. He underwent brain surgery, yet he still struggles every day to fight Parkinson’s. My brother is truly my inspiration. It pains me knowing he suffers with this terrible disease, which underscores just how important research and the availability of resources are to make lives better for those in Dave’s situation.”

For more information about the North Scottsdale walk for Parkinson’s on Saturday, November 13, e-mail cboss20@ gmail.com to sign up for the walk and lunch. Donate to N. Scottsdale Movers and Shakers at MovingDayPhoenix.org.

Because of Back Pain? - By Leading USA Back Pain Expert Dr Tom Padilla Dr. Tom’s Picture

Imagine you can foresee your future. You’d know the answer to the most critical questions like: Will I be able to be active, and mobile? And will all of my years be quality ones? What should I do now to make certain that it’s a “yes?” In fact, you’d know exactly what to do, what to avoid, and best of all...which doctors you can trust to help get you there!

If you’re active, and you’re aged 30+, and you have found that conventional advice, such as rest, or medication isn’t working for you, you’ll want to pay attention to what I’m about to tell you... it could help you nally stop trying short term solutions, and get a solution that allows you to be active with con dence again.

Back pain & sciatica is becoming more common with quarantine, and most treatments only focus on relieving the pain. is works for a bit, but the pain is just a symptom. To nd the Body Copycause you have to go deeper. So deep in fact, that you have to go all the way back to how your brain is interacting with your muscles. e most common thing that I hear people say, is “I have tight hip and back muscles.” ey say that when they stretch their muscles, their back pain or sciatica lessens, but they stop doing it because they have to do it all the time to get any results. Does this sound familiar? ey also tell me that one side always seems to be tighter than the other, or that no matter how much they stretch,

the muscles don’t get looser.

To understand why muscles get tight, you have to know that your muscles are not very smart. ey do what they’re told, and the brain is the one in charge. Your brain is constantly aware of where your body is in space, and tries to keep you stable. For example, when hiking a tricky trail, your brain tells your ankles, knees, and hips how to behave to stay balanced. If your brain feels like your body is unstable, it will call in extra muscles to help improve that stability. So it will tighten big muscles that are typically only used for large movements or heavy lifting.

In the case of back pain & sciatica, your tight back and hip muscles are likely compensating for weakness in other muscles. is in turn creates compression in the joints and around the nerves. As this compression goes on for a long period of time, in ammation builds up until you get full blown back pain or sciatica.

Here Are 7 ings Most People Try Unsuccessfully

Doctor YouTube: As amazing as YouTube is, this is a long-shot. ere are over 40 muscles that attach to your hips and pelvis alone. e chances of you getting the right exercises are slim, and some can result in making it worse.

Massage or Foam Rolling: is results in relief from the tight sti muscles, but over time people nd that the relief can be shorter and shorter Body Copybecause the weakness is still there. Stretching or Yoga: is, like massage, results in some relief. You do end up stretching out the sti muscles but people are often left still feeling like the tightness continues to return. Injections: Injections can be powerful anti in ammatory measures. ey can be very e ective in reducing your pain, but consider this. If your car had the check-engine light on, would you just pull out the circuit that turned the light on? Pills: Similar to injections, pills can be great to help you function if you can’t get away from the pain. But taking them every day becomes tiresome & can damage your organs. Topical Medication: ese medications can certainly be soothing for a while, but many people become frustrated by how frequently you have to use them. Chiropractic care: Chiropractic care can be e ective at relieving the pressure of the joint on the nerve. However if you nd yourself needing to go constantly to stay out of pain, chances are it’s masking the fact that the overactive muscles are the culprit, not the joint.
