THE SCOTTSDALE BOND PASSED… NOW WHAT?

By Scott Gaertner

AS OF THE WRITING OF THIS BLURB - TWO WEEKS AFTER THE SCOTTSDALE BOND ELECTION - THERE STILL ARE NO OFFICIAL RESULTS TO THE BOND VOTE, BUT THE SCOTTSDALEAZ.GOV/ELECTIONS WEBSITE SHOWS THAT THE IN THE UNOFFICIAL RESULTS. Assuming the recorder's office can work their way through boxes of hanging chads (note the clever reference to the 2000 presidential election), what are the next steps?

EXPECT DELAYS

The passing brings up loads of complicated decisions on how the city will spend this windfall of cash. Without our collective voices, the Scottsdale North community should expect that the monies will be allocated towards pressing and important issues in central and south Scottsdale. Remember the adage, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind." Most of our city leaders do not live in our community and were very surprised at how far we are from city center when they

BOND PASSED OVERWHELMINGLY drove up for the recent open meeting pertaining to the bond issue. If we want to be included in the allocation of these funds, then we need to take part in what is happening and change the conversation from “out of sight, out of mind” to "the squeaky wheel gets the oil."

WANT A DOG PARK?

For those not in attendance at the meetings, the city made it clear that they were open to ideas on what to include in the park. But they were equally clear that while they thought Pickleball was a great fit and very doable, the dog park was not so much. They were concerned about whether there was enough room and about the maintenance costs of a dog park. If you like the idea of a dog park, you should be prepared to mobilize and engage. Stay tuned here too…

ANOTHER PARK THOUGHT

There was a recent Marketwatch article detailing how the main Scottsdale North zip code was the top zip code in

the US for Baby Boomers. It said that one in three residents was a baby boomer in 85266. If that is true, shouldn’t this park favor that age group? There is a new trend in park equipment being built to be used by the young and the older (not the young and the old because baby boomers are not old!) Lastly, in keeping with the front-page article in this paper on Connecting Scottsdale North, what about choosing the name Scottsdale North Park for this wonderful new amenity. It will be the only park in the area and people ought to be able to know where it is!

PLANNING BEGINS ON TOWN OF CAREFREE VETERANS MEMORIAL

HONORING AND APPRECIATING THE SELFLESS SERVICE OF OUR NATION’S VETERANS HAS BEEN OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE IN THE TOWN OF CAREFREE FOR MANY YEARS. In 2019, the Town celebrated its 11th Annual Veterans Day Honor in November, and the first of what will become an annual Memorial Day Tribute in the Cave Creek Cemetery commenced this past May. In keeping with these annual traditions, a group of area veterans has initiated the creation and development of a Veterans Memorial within the Carefree Desert Gardens as a place of remembrance and reflection for the community.

“The Town of Carefree has for several years been in search of a project that will allow us to perpetually honor our local veterans” stated Vice Mayor John Crane. “This project will permit us to pay homage to the many veterans from all branches of service who live and work in Carefree and neighboring communities.” A development group will address all aspects of this important project, from implementing the design, developing architectural and engineering drawings of the selected Memorial, identifying an appropriate site, fund raising and working with contractors to build the piece. The working timeline is to have the project completed by Memorial Day, 2020, and to dedicate it during the Town’s Memorial Day Tribute on Monday, May 25.

The property where the Memorial will sit is within the Carefree Desert Gardens. A site in the western half of the Gardens has already been identified and approved by the group, and the Town of Carefree donated the land for this purpose.

Leading the charge is U.S. Army veteran and Carefree resident Mike Ferrell, joined by U.S. Marine Corps veteran and VETSBuilt Contracting owner Bob Jenkins, along with U.S. Air Force veteran and Cave Creek American Legion Post 34 member Pratt Ashworth. U.S. Navy veteran, Carefree resident and recent inductee to the Arizona Veteran Hall of Fame, Mike Wold rounds out the planning team. Also working on the project is landscape architect Joe Henkemeyer from New West Design, who is donating his time and expertise to

assist in the creation of the memorial. In the coming weeks, additional details will be shared regarding the planning schedule, as well as how to volunteer for and/or contribute funding for this important tribute.

For more information about the Memorial and planning, please contact the Town of Carefree at 480-488-3686.
