DESERT TRAILS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL INSTALLS STUDENT DESIGNED ART SCULPTURE

By PV Schools

IN THE FALL OF 2017, SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS AT DESERT TRAILS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BEGAN WORKING ON A “PUBLIC ART” SCULPTURE PROJECT IN ART CLASS. They were given a theme, Patriotic, and began planning and building a model for a sculpture that expressed their interpretaof paper and stood roughly 12 inches tall. In addition, students wrote an artist statement explaining their thought process and the meaning of their model. Once complete, students voted for their favorite model, and the one they wanted to represent their class in front of the school. The winning sculpture model, which was designed by Hailey Carter, currently a seventh

tion of that theme. The models were made out grade student at Explore Middle chool, was then handed off to Mr. Tyson artler, a Metals teacher at Paradise Valley High chool. Mr. artler and his students enlarged the pieces to scale, cut them out of sheet metal, welded them together, and fi nally, painted the sculpture with automotive paint.

The sculpture was transported back to Desert Trails Elementary chool and was bolted to a cement slab and permanently installed on the campus. It is the third public sculpture at the school. This collaborative project was entirely funded by the Desert Trails Elementary chool PTO.
