Music to Our Ears: Lakeshore Music Moves to the new Ravenscroft Hall
THE NORTH SCOTTSDALE JAZZ MUSIC SCENE IS GETTING A NEW NEIGHBOR.
Lakeshore Music, which has grown into one of the most-respected jazz concert series in the U.S. during its 12 seasons at Tempe Center for the Arts, is moving to Ravenscroft Hall, a beautiful new state-of-the-art venue in North Scottsdale.
The nine-concert season, which opens October 16, runs through May 2022. Tickets, with a variety of packages and pricing, are on sale at lakeshoremusic.org. “It’s an exciting new beginning for us in an area thirsting for cultural activity and live music,” says Woody Wilson, Lakeshore Music founder and president. “It has been a long and painful ordeal since February of 2020 when we were forced into shutdown by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the saying goes, ‘When one door shuts, another one opens.’ Our new door is the beautiful new Ravenscroft in Scottsdale. We are very excited to build a new audience of live jazz patrons in the North Valley. Our shows are not only great performances but also social occasions where friends meet to catch up and share the experience of live jazz done well.”
Ravenscroft, at 8445 E. Hartford Drive in the Scottsdale Perimeter Complex, just off Loop 101 at Princess Drive, is a 30,000-square-foot campus with a music venue and multi-use space. Its Ravenscroft Hall is an intimate 200-seat concert venue. The campus includes Jazzbird, a first-class jazz lounge, which, starting Fridays this month, will host music from popular and up-and-coming local musicians accompanied by a fine selection of wine and local craft beers.
Ravenscroft Hall will offer an unparalleled musical experience with superb acoustics, featuring the renowned Meyer Constellation sound system. Fans will enjoy an optimal listening experience and perfect viewing from any seat. Some shows will also feature projected visuals that accompany the music, creating a multi-sensory experience for the audience.
“Ravenscroft is going to be a draw,” Wilson says. “There is a lot of interest and people are going to want to see this incredible new facility. It is only fitting that we should open this incredible new building with one of world’s greatest jazz artists—Kenny Barron.”
Barron, a National Endowment for the Arts and American Jazz Hall of Fame pianist, opens the building on October 16 with an already sold-out performance. Cuban pianist Harold Lopéz-Nussa, whose work reflects the range and richness of Cuban music and its embrace of jazz improvisation and interaction, is up next on October 30.
More information about Lakeshore’s 2021-22 season can be found at lakeshoremusic.org. Learn more about Ravenscroft at theravenscroft.com.

Holland Center Presents 2nd Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser
OVER THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 22-24, THE HOLLAND CENTER WILL CELEBRATE THE HALLOWEEN SEASON
WITH ITS 2ND ANNUAL GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, this festive event will showcase over 1,000 whimsical, vibrantly colored glass pumpkins handmade by Gregory Tomb, an acclaimed local glass artist known for his unique, intricate designs. These one-of-a-kind works of art will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Holland Center, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to enhancing arts, education and community in the Desert Foothills region.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Artist Gregory Tomb has been fascinated by glass art since childhood when his family’s frequent road trips would often include visits to the
Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. After studying glassblowing as an art student at Hartwick College, Tomb explored a variety of personal and professional interests — but glass art always remained his passion. He occasionally rented glass studio time over the years and began honing his craft as a production glassblower in a factory for world-renowned glass maker Simon Pearce.
In 2014, he started participating in juried art shows nationwide. Tomb has been awarded “best in glass” and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival, and the Scottsdale Artfest. For the next three years, he will serve as artist-in-residence for the Town of Johnsburg, N.Y., where he will facilitate classes for over 500 students each summer. In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flameworked and cold-worked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light. Since 2013, he has taught glassblowing at the Bay Area Glass Institute, as well as through lessons from his own mobile studio. Tomb’s colorful autumnal creations celebrate the season and have been featured in museums and magazines around the country.

THE HOLLAND CENTER
As a former artist-in-residence at the Holland Center, Tomb is excited to share the joy and beauty of glass art with the Desert Foothills community. Located in North Scottsdale, the Holland Center is a unique partnership dedicated to celebrating arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need, and encouraging lifelong learning. Previously known as the Foothills Community Foundation, the Holland Center provides a diverse array of programs, including classes, fine art exhibits, and performing arts events.
The Holland Center is located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. To learn more, visit hollandcenter.org or glasspumpkinpatchfundraiser.com. For sponsorship opportunities and more information about the Glass Pumpkin Patch, contact info@hollandcenter.org or call 480-488-1090.

Farmers Market Tips & Tricks
Use these tips to guarantee the best selection, easy shopping and a comfortable day: Practicing safety and physical distancing is a must. Use these tips to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
COME EARLY For best selection of produce, arrive early so that you have first choice on the variety of produce you’ll see at your farmers market.
BRING CHANGE AND SMALL BILLS Though more and more markets are set up to take credit cards, carrying cash is a must.
BRING A COOLER Some smart produce shoppers bring a cooler on wheels to keep produce fresh until it gets home.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Don’t forget to bring drinking water.
LIMIT YOUR GROUP
Prevent overcrowding at the markets by limiting the amount of people you bring on your trip.
COVER YOUR MOUTH Bring your face mask and wear it secured properly over your nose and mouth in public areas.
LOOK, DON’T TOUCH Only touch produce items you plan to buy. The less people who touch an item, the less opportunities that exist for contamination.
STUFFY NOSE? STAY HOME If you or someone in your group isn’t feeling well, consider postponing your trip to the farmers market. Pay them a visit when you are well.

New Italian Market Coming to North Scottsdale
CAMELBACK HOSPITALITY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF S. MARANTO’S ITALIAN MARKET.
The concept is set to open by the end of the year and will join a growing list of establishments at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Mayo Boulevard in North Scottsdale.
S. Maranto’s will be a casual dining concept with a nofrills food mentality.
“We want to serve the best version of Italian-American comfort food; food that Nona used to make and food that has a lot of history,” says Michael Miller of Camelback Hospitality.
The concept will serve family recipes that date back 100 years and be a one-stop-shop for locals sourcing ingredients for their own Italian creations. “I think it’s beginning to be an area of North Scottsdale that’s going to be a foodie center. We are going to be North Scottsdale’s ‘Italian grocery,’ if you will,” Miller told What Now Phoenix recently.
Celebrating Italian American favorites, their specialties will include: homemade pasta, craft salads, build-yourown Italian sandwiches, parmesans, meatballs, and a curated selection of fine Italian goods. S. Maranto’s will serve up these crowd favorites in a nostalgic yet modern environment, offering patio dining and a full bar.
For further opening details, follow S. Maranto’s on Facebook and Instagram (@smarantositalian) or visit smarantos.com.
Ling’s Wok Shop Opens at Hayden Peak Crossing in North Scottsdale
LING & LOUIE’S ASIAN BAR AND GRILL, KNOWN FOR SERVING MODERN ASIAN CUISINE WITH AMERICAN FLAIR, INTRODUCED LING’S WOK SHOP—A NEW CONCEPT IN FAST CASUAL DINING COMBINED WITH A
FULL-SERVICE DINING EXPERIENCE. The new eatery just opened at Hayden Peak Crossing on the Northeast corner of Thompson Peak Parkway and Hayden Road in Scottsdale. The new concept is the first of its kind in the Ling & Louie’s brand.
“Ling & Louie’s is known for creating flavorful dishes using traditional Asian cooking techniques and ingredients in non-traditional ways,” says John Banquil, the company’s president and CEO. “At Ling’s Wok Shop, diners will enjoy our most popular menu items plus a host of bold new flavors from across Asia.”
The combination of both counter-service and full-service dining service meets the needs of everyone, Banquil explains. During lunch, Ling’s Wok Shop operates as a fast-casual restaurant serving fast, consistent, and delicious menu options that are both healthy and convenient. During happy hour and dinner service, it operates as a full-service restaurant, providing friendly and knowledgeable service as well as a full bar of hand-crafted cocktails, expertly selected wines, and local beers.
“At Ling’s Wok Shop, it’s all about the wok,” Banquil says. “Our wok-centered kitchen ensures that the food is fresh, clean, and healthy.”
Among these dishes will be Ling’s Seafood Hot Pot, which features scallops, salmon and jumbo shrimp simmered in a green curry-coconut broth. The menu also includes clean, light and healthy wok-fired creations accentuated with the restaurant’s 15 signature sauces.
Ling’s Wok shop is an evolution of the Ling & Louie’s brand and a model for the company’s growth, Banquil says. As part of this shift, the restaurant will include takeout and curbside pick-up options.
Ling’s Wok Shop is now open at 20511 North Hayden Road, Suite 100. For more information, visit lingswok.shop or follow @lingswokshop on Facebook and Instagram.
