GIVING IN THE GRAND CANYON STATE

Arizona Gives Day takes place April 2.

On April 2, Arizona will witness an extraordinary surge of generosity as the annual Arizona Gives Day unfolds. This 24-hour online giving extravaganza, initiated by AZ Impact for Good in 2013, is not just a day but a movement that has galvanized the spirit of giving across the state. With nearly $42 million raised since its inception, Arizona Gives Day illustrates the power of collective philanthropy and its transformative impact on the nonprofit sector.

Arizona is home to more than 20,000 nonprofits, from small grassroots organizations to large charities, all dedicated to making the Grand Canyon State a better place to live. These organizations touch every aspect of life, providing essential services that range from healthcare and education to environmental conservation and the arts. The economic footprint of these nonprofits is substantial, with an annual impact of $23.5 billion, accounting for nearly 8% of the state's gross product and making the sector the fifth largest non-government employer.

The urgency to support these vital organizations has never been greater. Arizona Gives Day is a lifeline for many nonprofits that rely on donations to sustain their operations and expand their reach. The initiative not only raises funds but also increases awareness about the critical role nonprofits play in our communities and the state at large. The unique online platform provided by azgives.org facilitates a direct connection between donors and causes they care about. It's a place where stories of hope and resilience are shared, where the community can learn about the diverse needs across Arizona, and where every donation, big or small, contributes to the greater good. The platform is accessible year-round, allowing for ongoing support through scheduled or recurring donations, but it's on Arizona Gives Day that the state comes together in a remarkable display of generosity.

The benefits of participating in Arizona Gives Day extend beyond the immediate

financial boost to nonprofits. It's an investment in the future of Arizona, creating a stronger, more vibrant community for all. Donations not only support the delivery of critical services but also contribute to the state's economy, strengthening it from within. As Arizona Gives Day 2024 approaches, the call to action is clear: let's unite to support the heart of our state—the nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to improve our lives. Whether you're a lifelong Arizonan or new to the state, your gift on April 2 will help ensure that these essential organizations can continue their important work. Together, we can make a lasting impact and demonstrate the true power of collective giving. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help strengthen and sustain the vibrant tapestry of nonprofits that make Arizona a place we're proud to call home. Let's show the world the generous spirit of Arizona on this day of giving. To learn more and donate, visit azgives.org.

200 SENIORS in Arizona are fed per week by our Stove to Table program.

10,000 MEALS served last year

Senior Meal Delivery

Advance is creating new possibilities and promising futures by building optimal health in under-resourced communities.

Every Tuesday, we deliver 200 fresh and nutritious homemade meals straight from our community garden to seniors living in low-income housing across Maricopa County. Our staff and volunteers cook these meals using fresh, local produce from our garden, then deliver them door-to-door to seniors in need. In addition, we do a wellness check for each senior and teach them about nutrition and health – including how to read and understand food labels – so that they have the knowledge to make positive choices for their health.

Advance Community (Formerly Esperança)

Advance Community, formerly known as Esperança, has a rich history of dedication to fostering optimal health and wellness in under-resourced communities. Since 2000, Advance’s domestic health literacy programs have empowered thousands of under-resourced Latino individuals throughout Arizona to improve their health, regardless of zip code or economic circumstances. The seniors who participate in our programming live in food deserts, limiting their access to fresh produce and lacking transportation to grocery stores. Many of our participants in their 70s and 80s have physical limitations that make cooking challenging, so the meals provided through our program relieve the added stress of meal preparation in their lives. In addition, they often face social isolation because of their limited mobility and high vulnerability to COVID-19.

Through our Stove to Table Program, Advance delivers healthy meals and important information about food and nutrition to low-income seniors, helping them achieve the healthiest, most independent lives possible. Every Tuesday, we deliver 200 fresh and nutritious homemade meals straight from the kitchen to seniors living in low-income housing in Maricopa County. Our staff and volunteers cook these meals using fresh, locally grown ingredients (including our community garden), then package and deliver them door-to-door to seniors in need. With the generous support of our donors and those utilizing the Arizona Tax Credit, we serve 10,000 meals each year as well as twice-monthly congregant meals and wellness checks from our staff and volunteers. We often hear impactful stories like Lucia’s, whose life was changed by our program. Lucia first heard about Advance Community during the COVID-19 pandemic. We had started delivering hand sanitizer, masks, cleaning supplies, and food bags. Feeling alone, Lucia found hope from a knock at the door. After speaking with our team member, she signed up for regular meal delivery from Stove to Table. She shares, “It’s just so amazing that they’re willing to share with us and give us something to look forward to. Like every Tuesday, we don’t have to cook.” Lucia recently visited Advance on a cooking day and said that seeing a group of people she’s never met work like this for her health is something to feel good about. “They have given us seniors hope.”

Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children

The mission of the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children is to provide social, emotional, and financial support to families managing the health and well-being of their child diagnosed with cancer.

Hearing the words “your child has cancer” is terrifying. In an instant, your entire world is turned upside down. It is not only financially devastating but emotionally and socially devastating as well. The Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children strives to provide individualized support for the entire family. They want families to know that they are not alone in their journey.

In their 12,000-square-foot facility, the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children provides a safe place where kids with cancer can be kids. Since its inception, ACFC has served over 10,000 individuals affected by pediatric cancer statewide who otherwise would likely be isolated and alone. Empathetic and caring, ACFC provides financial assistance directly to families in need to assist with medical bills, the cost of living, and sadly, end-of-life expenses. Their family pantry distributes food and household essentials to those facing food scarcity and economic instability. Individual and family counseling, K9 therapy, family social events, toys for children, and a large facility that includes an art studio, imagination play area, paint splatter room, theater, meditation room, and more allow children with cancer and their siblings to experience childhood.

“I wanted to send a quick thank you and let you know how much your event meant to our little family. Seeing Ryan participate in fun events like this and get out of the house was really great. It was also wonderful for Big Sister to feel a little bit normal and have all four of us out together, which has been hard since Ryan’s diagnosis. I know these simple words get thrown around a lot, but I hope you know and understand how much they mean to us: Thank you!” Mom of cancer warrior Ryan. Website: azcancerfoundation.org

Looking ahead, AZA United envisions a future where anyone affected by autism can access barrier-free, individualized support to achieve a high quality of life. The organization aspires to become a statewide entity capable of promptly and effectively responding to the needs of individuals with autism throughout their lifespan. Since 2007, they have been supporting families, as a parent-driven, parent-professional collaborative group that remains unbiased towards communication modes and methods. Arizona Burn Foundation

Burn survivors rely on medical professionals, emotional support staff, families, and friends. That’s why the Arizona Burn Foundation offers compassionate services that bring all parties together through a comprehensive continuum of care. The Arizona Burn Foundation has been serving the Grand Canyon State and its residents for decades, providing education, emotional support, financial assistance, and leadership development programs to help those who’ve encountered the devastating effects of burn injuries.

From the time of a survivor’s injury through the rest of their life, the Arizona Burn Foundation supports burn survivors and their families. They bring them through recovery until they no longer identify as victims but instead as human beings of intrinsic value and worth.

For more than 50 years, the Arizona Burn Foundation has provided high-quality support programs for children, adult burn survivors, and their families. Two Maricopa County surgeons—Dr. MacDonald Wood and Dr. William Price—and attorney George “Fritz” Randolph established the Foundation in 1967. Ever since, they’ve collaborated with organizations, communities, medical professionals, burn centers, and hospitals across the state to ensure that anyone who suffers a burn injury receives the highest standard of care and assistance. What’s more, they help burn survivors reclaim their identity and ensure that their work is instrumental to their holistic recovery.

Burn and fire safety start with prevention and education. Through their two signature programs, Milo & Moxie: Smart Safety Rangers and Community Smoke Alarm events, they bring positive and proactive change that saves lives.

As a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, they rely on your donations to help them achieve their mission: To improve the quality of life for burn survivors and their families in Arizona while promoting burn prevention advocacy and education.

Epic Kids Giving Back: Serving up Opportunities

Juniors at Brophy College Prep—Logan Phillips, Arin Gopakumar, Ryan Zerbib, and Naren Gudavalli—have not only been acing tennis courts for approximately seven years but also acing community service with their nonprofit organization, Overhead Opportunities, founded about a year and a half ago. Their mission is to make tennis available to everybody!

With personal understanding of the high expenses involved in tennis lessons and equipment, they aimed to serve prospective tennis players who found these costs prohibitive. The boys garnered support from several organizations, including The Loyola Academy, Xavier College Prep, the Challenge Foundation, and USTA Southwest, and secured a $1,000 grant from USTA for equipment. Currently, their goals are to expand throughout Arizona and to new states, including California, Texas, and New York. Additionally, when they go to college, they hope to start a few subchapters specific to the area that they are in. Even though all of the co-founders work together to make Overhead Opportunities possible, they each have important jobs within the organization.

Logan is the CEO, and he oversees the organization to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Naren is the CAO, and he supervises all of the clinics, monitoring who will be attending and the volunteer coaches. Arin is the COO, and he handles reaching out to other organizations and schools to help Overhead Opportunities grow. Ryan is the CFO, and he manages all of the finances, including applying for grants and creating a GoFundMe.

Youth Clinics Serving Up Skills and Fun

Held most Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Xavier College Prep—who kindly donated their courts—these clinics run for most of the year, excluding summer, and welcome players for single or multiple sessions. Registration and coaching application forms are available on their website: overheadopportunities.org. If you have had some tennis experience before and want to help out with coaching, you can submit a form, also available through their website.

Lend a Hand

Support their mission by donating to their GoFundMe, enabling them to purchase more equipment for their students, at gofundme. com/f/overhead-opportunities.

In their journey, these young men learned the power of perseverance and witnessed the profound impact of their efforts on others’ lives. Their advice to other young changemakers: Put yourself out there. Numerous people would love to assist you, and relentless pursuit can lead you to unimaginable heights.

Naya Seth, 13 years old, loves to read and write. She is a member of National Junior Honor Society and National Charity League and enjoys participating in various philanthropy activities.

Established in 1981 by concerned Sun City residents who recognized a gap in accessible services, Benevilla has evolved into a robust organization with a range of offerings. These include Life Enrichment Day programs, free support and educational services, comprehensive care management, and social activities. Its dedicated team of over 200 employees and volunteers ensures these services thrive.

Benevilla operates three Life Enrichment Adult Day Care Programs tailored to different needs: Lucy Anne’s Place in Surprise caters to those with mild to moderate dementia; Mary’s Place in Sun City is for individuals with moderate to advanced dementia; and its West Valley location inside the Church at Cactus in Peoria accommodates those with various needs, including dementia, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and post-stroke or fall recovery.

At Wirtzie’s Preschool and Daycare, located on its main campus, Benevilla provides a nurturing environment for children aged six weeks to five years old. Through its Intergenerational Program, Benevilla brings together older adults and children for engaging activities that enrich both generations. Additionally, its Benefitness Adaptive Gym in Surprise caters to individuals with diverse abilities and clinical needs.

The C.A.R.E.S. Department offers vital support services such as free support groups, educational events, and home assistance for homebound or isolated older adults. Volunteers play a crucial role in providing rides to medical appointments, grocery shopping, companionship, and light home maintenance.

Benevilla relies on the generosity of individuals, congregations, service clubs, and corporations to sustain its programs through grants and donations. If you’re interested in making a difference, volunteering with Benevilla offers fulfilling opportunities to serve the community. For more information on how to get involved, call 623-584-4999 or visit their website.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT RESOURCES

Caring for an aging family member can be very rewarding. It can also be equally challenging as family become the primary source of support and care for an older adult who is no longer able to care for himself/herself.

At Benevilla, we understand that the best thing that caregivers can do for the loved one he/she is caring for is to take care of themselves both physically and emotionally.

The Benevilla peer to peer caregiver support groups are a great place to recharge and connect with other caregivers who are in similar situations. As you learn from other families’ experiences, you will gain practical advice and comfort. Benevilla support groups are nonjudgmental safe places to voice the stress, frustration, and fears that are part of caregiving and finding the assurance that you are not alone. Benevilla offers supports groups for memory care, ambiguous loss and grief, Parkinson’s, bereavement and adult children caregivers. As you navigate your caregiver journey, there are support groups to assist each step of the way. The Benevilla caregiver support groups give the gift of hope through authentic empathy and understanding.

Caregiver Respite Opportunity

For individuals who are not currently enrolled at one of our Life Enrichment

Programs, Benevilla offers a free respite opportunity at our West Valley location while you are at one of the Benevilla support groups. This respite is available during the time of the support group only and is based on space availability that day. If your loved one is already enrolled at the program, they will need to use one of their regular scheduled days.

Before respite is used the first time, the Life Enrichment Director or designee will meet with you to complete the necessary paperwork. Once enrolled, caregivers must contact the Life Enrichment Program at least 24 hours in advance to see if there is available space and schedule with the Director or designee for each visit.

For more information and a schedule of upcoming events, visit benevilla.org/ caregiver-support-groups/

The Life Enrichment Program Director can be reached at 623-584-4999.

Beacon Group’s mission is “Creating Opportunities for People with Disabilities.” In serving this mission, Beacon Group offers a variety of employment-related programs, as well as the education and socialization necessary for the individuals they serve to lead meaningful, productive lives through work.

Founded in 1952, Beacon Group has grown over the past 70 years to become one of the largest employers of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, behavioral health diagnoses, and substance use disorders in Arizona. Beacon Group operates several businesses that employ individuals with disabilities and offers local businesses high-quality subcontract services such as staffing, custodial and landscaping, contract manufacturing and packaging, cable assembly, fleet and facility services, confidential document shredding, and more.

Currently, one in nine Arizonans identifies as having a disability, and less than half of working-age adults with disabilities are currently employed. Beacon Group aims to bridge that gap by employing and serving more than 2,000 people with disabilities each year across a variety of programs and services. Last year, individuals with disabilities employed or served by Beacon Group earned more than $15 million in wages. For many people with disabilities, the biggest challenge lies not in finding a job but in how to keep and remain successful in that job. Each individual served by Beacon Group is offered a full suite of customizable program options to increase the likelihood of obtaining, retaining, and/or advancing employment. For example, Beacon Group can provide educational support such as preparation and training to obtain a GED. Another option is to participate in their Computer Skills Development Programs. Beacon Group has a long tradition of accomplishment with supported employment and job placement services that lead to successful employment opportunities for the individuals they serve.

When making a tax-credit donation to Beacon Group, know that your generous gift will help people with disabilities get a job and make meaningful contributions to society. Tax credit donations are vital to ensuring Beacon Group continues to offer a variety of customizable programming options to people with disabilities across Arizona.

Billy’s Place

Billy’s Place, located in the West Valley, is a safe community for kids and families who have suffered the death of a parent, child, sibling, or another special person. At Billy’s Place, kids and families are surrounded by others who “get it.” Here, it’s safe to laugh, cry, and come as you are. As one dad puts it, Billy’s Place is where his family went from “Broken, to hopeful, to providing hope.”

Billy’s Place helps kids and families re-discover hope in their grief journeys through four main services:

Grief Peer Support Groups are offered in-person or virtually and are led by trained volunteer facilitators. Groups are designed to bring together people who have experienced similar circumstances. For example, there is a group for young children, teens, and adults, and a traumatic loss group for families who have lost someone to suicide or drug overdose.

Grief Informed Schools is an outreach and training program that equips schools to support students who are experiencing grief. In the program’s first two years, the team has had a huge impact on awareness and training educators on grief.

The Grief Resource Center is an online and in-person library of resources families can use to help with all facets of their grief journey.

Community Support and Education aims to raise awareness for the challenges kids and families face while grieving and ensure organizations, community groups, medical providers, and others know Billy’s Place as a resource for them and their families.

Billy’s Place services are offered to families at no cost. The organization relies on generous individuals, organizations, partners, and volunteers to make all these services possible. The number of kids who will experience the death of a parent or sibling continues to rise in Arizona, so Billy’s Place is focused on welcoming new donors and finding additional ways for people to show their support.

In 2023, Billy’s Place introduced the “In Loving Memory” specialty AZ license plate that displays support for grieving families and provides sustainable income to Billy’s Place with every purchase. To order your specialty plate, visit azmvdnow.gov/plates.

Camp Patrick

Camp Patrick is a free week-long sleepaway camp for children and young adults, ages 6–18, living with Spina Bifida. It is a place where kids can strengthen their independence, try new things, and make lifelong friends with children who are similar. Camp Patrick provides a unique experience not just for the kids but also for the families that are sending their kids off to camp. Camp Patrick creates a strong support system for these families and for all the campers that attend.

The camp is held at Whispering Hope Ranch in Payson from June 9–14. The facility is accessible so that every camper can participate in all activities without limitations. Activities include archery, horseback riding, fishing, movie nights, a talent show, and much more. Safety is paramount, so there is a specially trained medical team on staff to help care for the day-to-day medical needs of campers. While the cost for each camper is $950, your generous donations make this experience absolutely free of charge for families. Camp Patrick maintains a 1:1 ratio of staff to campers. As a volunteer-run camp, there is a tremendous need for dedicated volunteers. For more information on the various volunteer roles available and to apply, visit their website (dates for staff are June 8–14). This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity that you will not regret.

Duet: Partners In Health and Aging

Imagine a community where every person ages with compassion, dignity, and hope. Duet: Partners in Health and Aging is turning this vision into reality through its mission to promote health and wellbeing through vitally needed free-of-charge services to grandparents raising grandchildren, family caregivers, and homebound adults.

Services for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Parenting isn’t easy, especially the second time around. In Arizona, more than 54,000 children are being raised by grandparents in an informal kinship home. Grandparents or relatives who find themselves in the unexpected position of parenting a second time around face complex issues. The majority of grandfamilies whom Duet serves do not receive any of the assistance awarded to foster families, which makes the support Duet provides all the more vital. Duet provides grandparents with the tools and resources to thrive, keep the family together, and address the grandchildren’s needs. Despite their age and not having raised children for decades, these grandparents are willing to make huge sacrifices to keep the children connected to their family. Your support of Duet provides grandfamilies with personalized guidance in English and Spanish, virtual and in-person support groups, legal assistance, social outings, and respite funds. For the latter, Duet pays registration fees for the grandchildren to participate in out-of-school time sports, fitness, dance, and education remediation programs to help them thrive and provide much-needed respite for the grandparents. Duet’s services exist free of charge only because of the diversified support of our generous community and the hundreds of volunteers who help fulfill Duet’s mission. From giving homebound adults rides to the grocery store and medical appointments to delivering help and hope to family caregivers and grandparents raising grandchildren, Duet is here to make sure no one faces life’s aging challenges alone. Volunteer. Donate. Ask for help. Together, we are partners in health and aging.

Elevate Phoenix

The youth served by Elevate Phoenix ache for someone to care about them. They experience daily chronic stressors, including unsafe neighborhoods and poverty; many come from single-parent households; and others have a parent who uses drugs or is incarcerated. Many struggle to learn in school due to being advanced before they were ready and the ripple effects of the pandemic-related school shutdowns. Before being referred to Elevate Phoenix by their principals and counselors, many were on the brink of giving up and dropping out.

Founded in 2009, Elevate Phoenix’s mission is to deliver long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth. Its innovative relationship-based approach with youth who feel beaten down by life is unique; no other agency in Arizona uses teacher-mentors who invest in their lives, teach accredited curriculum in the classroom, tutor them during lunch and after school, and remain available 24/7/365 to help with anything causing distress. Teacher-mentors are young adults, most from the same neighborhoods as the youth, and understand their challenges. As they begin interacting with Elevate Phoenix’s teacher-mentors and staff, who embrace them and are committed to their success, they want to stay in school.

Elevate Phoenix conducts accredited literacy, life skills, and workforce preparedness programs with 4,500 youth in grades 2–12 at eight Title I schools in east, south, and west Phoenix. Its socialemotional learning and trauma-informed strategies help these students learn. Each year, nearly 100% of the youth pass their courses and successfully advance to the next grade. More than 98% of seniors graduate, compared to the state average of 78%; 100% graduate with a post-secondary plan in place (i.e., college, certification, the military, etc.); and more than 90% advance to college.

Today, many youths who believed their college and career dreams were unattainable a few years ago are now employed in rewarding and well-paying careers. Your donation will be a positive investment in the lives of thousands of youths, so they can break the cycle of poverty and have a successful future.

Foothills Food Bank

The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center, a community-based nonprofit organization, is dedicated to ending food insecurity and fostering self-sufficiency throughout 250 square miles in Northern Maricopa County, including Cave Creek, Desert Hills, Anthem, North Phoenix, and North Scottsdale, and Southern Yavapai County, including Mayer and Black Canyon City. In 2023, they distributed nearly 787,900 meals within their service area. Their weekly Senior Market Day saw 2,225 market visits last year, an increase of 23 percent over the year prior. This has become a vital resource for seasoned community members in need who struggle to make ends meet.

Their outreach extends beyond traditional food bank methods and includes mobile food pantries and micro-pantries. Strategically serving communities in need, their mobile food pantries bring the food bank directly to those who can’t easily access it. Meanwhile, micro-pantries in schools and school libraries ensure that students have access to meals during weekends and school breaks. In addition to providing food assistance, the Foothills Food Bank offers support with government program applications, organizes educational seminars, provides mental health referrals, offers career services, and connects individuals with a range of additional resources.

They have been able to accomplish these remarkable initiatives with the support of their generous community and the 324 volunteers who generously contributed over 40,000 hours. And because of these volunteers, they were able to use 93 cents out of every dollar received to provide programs and services. Their community, including these dedicated volunteers, has been instrumental in their mission. To meet the rapidly growing demand for food and services, they’re excited to announce the construction of a new campus, made possible by some very creative negotiations with the Town of Cave Creek. This expansion will enhance their ability to receive, process, and distribute more food to those in need. At Foothills Food Bank, their collaborative efforts and community engagement are at the heart of their impact. Together, they’re not just tackling hunger; they’re fostering hope, dignity, and resilience within their community. Join them in their mission to create a future where no one goes to bed hungry. Gabriel’s Angels

Gabriel’s Angels’ work is driven by a passionate belief that the unconditional love of a pet can heal a child. With Arizona ranking 44th in the nation in child welfare, they know that their pet therapy visits to vulnerable children in places like Title I schools, crisis nurseries, homeless shelters, and group homes have a positive impact and enhance the social and emotional development of children. This year, they expect to serve 2,300 children with 125 pet therapy teams at 75 partner agencies throughout Arizona.

Gabriel’s Angels serves vulnerable children in Arizona through the application of innovative pet therapy. The program’s goal is to increase the overall sense of well-being and happiness for children in a safe environment and to build critical core behaviors such as empathy, respect, tolerance, and confidence.

Through the life-changing power of pet therapy, they enhance the social and emotional development of vulnerable children. “Gabriel’s Angels provides a non-threatening venue to learn selfcontrol and sensitivity,” says one local school staff member.

In addition to donations, they rely heavily on dedicated volunteers. Do you have an amazing pet who is social and likes children? You and your pet can make an impact in your community by providing unconditional love to vulnerable children through the power of pet therapy. Volunteers receive personalized training, activities for pet therapy visits, and ongoing support from Gabriel’s Angels staff.

You can support your love for animals with your Arizona Tax Credit. Gabriel’s Angels is one of the only animal-related charities that offers you a chance to donate and get it all back with the Arizona Tax Credit. With your gift, they can reach more vulnerable children who are hurting and in need of the unconditional love and support of a therapy dog.

Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership

Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership is focusing its efforts on helping families with school-age children that are experiencing homelessness. During the 2021-2022 school year, the U.S. Department of Education reported that Arizona had over 21,000 public school students that were displaced, atrisk, or homeless. These students were living in shelters, hotels or motels, doubled up with others, or had no shelter at all.

Many of these children have experienced long periods of time without a stable home to sleep in and carry everything they own with them. How can they be expected to focus on school if they don’t even have a bed to sleep in? Without help, most will have no hope of ever breaking the cycle of homelessness.

Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership (H.E.L.P.) is empowering such children and their parents. Their mission is to change the cycle of homelessness through our children by providing immediate aid and comfort, advancing education, promoting awareness, and creating action in our community.

One of their signature programs is called HelpSnackz. HelpSnackz is a nonperishable bag of food that goes out to at-risk, displaced, and homeless children in the community. Some students leave their campus at the end of the school day without knowing if they will have dinner that evening. H.E.L.P. is filling that hunger gap. Additionally, HelpSnackz bags have handwritten uplifting and encouraging messages to bring hope and a smile to thousands of children and teenagers every day.

Changing the cycle of homelessness through our children starts with a basic need such as HelpSnackz. Visit their website to see the full range of programs offered and are building to bring dignity and hope to the homeless community.

Gesher Disability Resources

Gesher was founded in 1985 to meet the special needs of children and adults with disabilities who were unable to participate in typical activities of Jewish life in greater Phoenix. The original programs were for special education assistance and summer camp inclusion. These were followed by support groups for parents, grandparents and siblings, an active disability awareness outreach program, information and referral services, and sign language interpreters in Jewish settings. Over the years, the agency added social groups and continuing Jewish studies for teens and adults with moderate to severe disabilities, educational forums on disability related topics and two supervised Jewish homes for adults with disabilities. A monthly “no shush” service called Simchat Shabbat was added to the program list and won the Belle Latchman Community Service Award in 2008.

In 2015, Gesher was accepted as a QCO for the State of Arizona’s tax credit program. In 2017, they changed their name to Gesher Disability Resources to more accurately reflect who they are today. Gesher is the Hebrew word for “bridge”, and while their roots are culturally Jewish, all are welcome at their events to participate, learn, and have fun.

Gesher members love being out in the community participating in activities like bowling, swimming, and visiting the zoo, all of which become affordable thanks to tax credit dollars. The agency’s education team provides direct services to over 120 students who have learning challenges each school year and tax credit dollars subsidize the fees. Safe, affordable housing continues to be a need in our community and tax credit dollars are helping to expand Gesher’s residential program that provides homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Combating the nearly 80% unemployment rate in the disability community happens when organizations hire a professional speaker who lives with a disability through Damon Brooks & Associates, a subsidiary of Gesher Disability Resources.

Serving the disability community is their passion and through programs and services led by Gesher professionals, they impact over 4,000 individuals throughout Arizona each year. Their vision is to create bridges to bring all communities together – please join them!

Impact One

Impact One is committed to improving the quality of life for female breast cancer patients. It is their belief that no woman should have to battle cancer alone. Their program is designed so that each woman not only receives one-on-one support through the Hope Box Essentials Project but also receives help with obtaining breast cancer screenings and prevention, referral resources, and education on breast health.

The Hope Box Essentials Project provides each woman with costly items that are directly related to chemotherapy treatment, radiation treatment, or any surgery related to breast cancer, often not covered by insurance. Each Hope Box is filled with items such as prostheses, bras, wigs, and postsurgical garments. The Hope Box is shipped directly to their home, alleviating some of the financial and emotional stress during treatment and the recovery journey. Breast cancer patients can apply for a Hope Box on their website, and community members can donate them from the website as well.

The Impact One Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to provide prompt support and resources to those impacted by breast cancer. At Impact One, their goal is to impact each individual woman, meeting her wherever she finds herself in her personal breast cancer recovery journey. They want to be a safe place for women to reach out to for support, compassion, and services to ease some of the negativity cancer throws at them. It can be such a confusing time, and they have the information and resources women need.

We are all affected by breast cancer in some way. We may know someone who is a fighter, be one ourselves, or simply know someone who could be at risk. Stand together with them and help them come alongside women who are on their breast cancer journey.

Jewish Family & Children’s Service

Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the community by providing behavioral health, healthcare, and social services to children, teens, and adults of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds. Founded in 1935, JFCS has been providing services to the Greater Phoenix area for over 85 years. Each year, they assist more than 40,000 individuals in communities across Maricopa County. As one of Maricopa County’s largest integrated behavioral and primary care health providers, they understand the link between mental and physical health. At JFCS, they hope for a future where families are strong, where our elders are cared for and where children are safe. Their dedication to their mission is strengthened by their core Jewish values, but that does not mean they only serve Jewish families. They provide quality services to people of all faiths which help strengthen families, resolve conflicts, and cope with everyday living.

“Although social needs have changed over the decades, the central mission of JFCS has always been to help others. The time-honored Jewish values…infuse the agency with energy, integrity, and a devotion to helping others in need.” – Michael R. Zent, Ph.D., President and CEO (2008-2016)

Jewish Free Loan

The mission of Jewish Free Loan (JFL) is to provide interest-free loans to Arizona’s Jewish community. At JFL, they envision a financially secure Arizona Jewish community and work to bring this to fruition through their financial assistance services, basic needs resources, and the dissemination of materials focusing on topics related to financial literacy. Since their inception, thousands of individuals and families have been able to provide a loved one with a Jewish burial, avoid eviction, tend to medical or dental needs, adopt a child, continue their education, travel to Israel, start a business, experience Jewish summer camp, and navigate numerous other life experiences without the worry or burden of compounding interest.

As a current borrower shared with them, “We cannot thank JFL enough for what this loan has done for us. Thank you for going above and beyond to ensure we’d be in the best spot given the circumstances. There aren’t too many people left in the world who care as much as you do.” Jewish Free Loan is a Qualified Charitable Organization of the AZ Charitable Tax Credit (CTC). Through this program, donors receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on their Arizona state income tax return at no additional cost.

To receive this tax credit, simply make a donation to Jewish Free Loan any time before filing your taxes or before Tax Day (whichever comes first). Be sure to indicate that you are taking advantage of the CTC program. Be sure to consult your tax advisor for more information. Your support is essential to helping meet the financial needs of the community.

The programs supported by Charitable Tax Credit contributions include, but are not limited to:

• Emergency and crisis situations • Eviction prevention • Rent and utility payments • Jewish burial

• Medical and dental needs

JFL continues to see an increased need for financial assistance in all of these categories. Your contribution will help make a difference in the lives of community members in need.

Qualified Charitable Organizations The Joy Bus

Started in 2011 by award-winning chef Jennifer Caraway, The Joy Bus is a nonprofit organization delivering more than a meal to homebound cancer patients around the Valley. Their meals are made with fresh, organic, non-GMO produce and come in eco-friendly and chemical-free packaging.

Tucked into each hand-decorated paper bag is an informational sheet on the nutritional power of the ingredients used and how they will support the fight against cancer. Their service also includes critical home visits and wellness checks by their incredible team of volunteers, many of whom are cancer survivors themselves. Growing from their start as a one-woman operation serving two patients, they are proud to now serve upwards of 140 patients, caregivers, and family members each week throughout the Phoenix area. They recently reached their milestone of 20,000 meals as an organization in 2022.

To continue this momentum, The Joy Bus has launched a $5.4 million More Than A Meal Capital Campaign, with a cabinet of strong community leaders chaired by Peter and Rebecca Ailes-Fine and Derrick and Amy Hall. It will be funded by foundations, businesses, and individuals who know and appreciate the challenges faced by homebound cancer patients and their caregivers. With this campaign, they aim to dramatically expand their kitchen, pantry, and dining capacity, with a goal of providing over 2,500 meals per week by 2026.

For more information about The Joy Bus, the More Than A Meal Capital Campaign, volunteering, and other ways to support the organization, visit their website or find them on Facebook and Instagram.

“If one knows them, one understands what The Joy Bus means to them. Every hand that has touched the bags, the flowers, the incredible food, the hugs, the love... all of it has been as important as the medical science that they have been fortunate to receive.”

Local First Arizona

Supporting the largest community of locally owned businesses in the country, Local First works relentlessly to unleash economic opportunities for Arizonans. Lilia Martinez is one of the thousands of businesses Local First Arizona has supported over 20 years. Martinez waited tables for a long time before making the leap to become an entrepreneur. She had watched owner after owner take over the Mexican restaurant where she worked, causing uncertainty and sometimes loss of income. When another proprietor left, she purchased the Phoenix business and took the reins of Las Islitas de San Blas herself.

“It was the opportunity I had been waiting for,” Martinez said. “I wanted to be my own boss and improve my financial situation.” Although the first years were difficult, Martinez found Fuerza Local Acelerador de Negocios. “I recommend that all entrepreneurs seek advice and help before opening a business,” she said. “It would have been easier if I had known about Fuerza Local to avoid so many headaches.”

Martinez received expert advice on improving her business and didn’t feel so alone. Sales have grown 30%. Local First Arizona offers training and support programs that “every business person should take,” Martinez said. “I have grown enormously on a personal and professional level. It motivated me to set goals and achieve them, to manage my business better, and to create alliances with other businesspeople.”

Your support is critical to their mission. Donations help cover the essential costs of technology, supplies, facilities, and transportation so Local First can offer free or reduced-cost services for low-income business owners. Together, they’re removing barriers to economic opportunity in Arizona through programs like:

• Fuerza Local Acelerador de Negocios, a six-month accelerator for Hispanic business owners.

• We Rise Business Accelerator, a six-month training and mentorship program for Black entrepreneurs.

• Arizona Rural Policy Forum, the largest gathering of rural policymakers in the state.

• Green Business Boot Camp, which teaches business owners how to reduce their water and energy use by 20% or more.

• Good Food Boot Camp, preparing chefs to scale their local food business from ideation to brick-and-mortar. Website: localfirstaz.com

WHY BUYING LOCAL MATTERS

Why local? Because when you buy, shop, and eat local, you keep your money where your home is. These extra dollars circulating in the community are an investment in local job creation and preserving diverse and prosperous communities.

And it doesn’t stop there.

If a community the size of Tucson shifted just 10% of its spending from non-local to local businesses, the shift would create:

• 1,600 NEW JOBS

• $53 MILLION IN NEW WAGES

• $130 MILLION+ IN TOTAL ECONOMIC IMPACT

By sourcing more products and services locally, we are investing our dollars to create self-reliant local communities that offer opportunity and prosperity for all.

The Local First is an excellent resource for both business owners, and those who want to support local. Visit LocalFirstAZ.com to find their:

Business Directory: Find a comprehensive list of local businesses. While you can search by the typical categories – food/dining, hotels/ lodging, you can also search by the more specific; Veteran Owned, BIPOC Owned, LGBTQ+ Owned, Women Owned, Arizona Made and more.

Signature Events:

A variety of events are hosted throughout the state every year. From food festivals to educational conferences, they work to build a better Arizona. Upcoming events include The Arizona Good Business Summit on April 16 where locally owned businesses from across the state connect and grow as leaders in their communities, and The

Arizona Fall Fest on November 9 which brings people and local businesses together from all over the Valley.

Helping Children in Need

Love House’s Mission

To break the cycle of child abuse through helping children to cultivate purpose and values, develop life skills (such as acceptable communication and behavior, healthy boundaries, respecting self and others, discovering self-motivation, and rising above their situation), job training, and one-on-one counseling.

Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” We are such a group, and we reinforce that these are not forgotten kids, they are not the throw-aways in our community.

Love House Kids Program

The Love House Kids Program is an Arizona-based nonprofit dedicated to the mission of putting an end to child abuse.

They work to provide support and services to some of the most vulnerable and often forgotten members of society—children living in group homes and shelters across the valley. They help these children find their inner value, setting them up to be successful in life. This is accomplished through a wide range of programs, including educational seminars (anti-bullying, drug abuse avoidance and finding self-worth), socially healthy outings (camping, hikes, zoo visits), and life-skill training sessions. Children are taught how to avoid bad habits and behaviors and introduce them to things like budgeting, cooking, and interpersonal interactions. The group also works to provide back-to-school supplies, allowing children to have the tools they need to be successful in their studies.

In addition, they facilitate a Christmas gift drive, providing gifts to 150–200 children every year who would otherwise go without. The Love House Kids Program believes no child should be left behind in life and does everything they can to help them understand that someone cares about them.

Their small, dedicated group of volunteers works tirelessly to support at-risk youth - none of which is possible without the support of the community. Their team works solely off of donations and volunteerism; they do not take any salaries, bonuses, or commissions. As such, all funds entrusted to them are able to be put right back into their mission.

The Love House Kids Program firmly believes in the future of our youth. Typically, the children they work with seek nothing more than a sense of belonging and normalcy. By helping those in group homes and shelters, they encourage them to break the cycle of abuse and find ways to grow into happy, productive members of society.

Maggie’s Place

Maggie’s Place is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to provide safe housing and a nurturing community to homeless pregnant women, empowering them to thrive throughout their lifetime. They are committed to serving mothers by upholding dignity, providing support for those experiencing barriers to thriving, and building an inclusive, trauma-informed community. Founded in the spirit of Catholic social teaching in 2000, their core values of love, hospitality, community, and excellence derive from these principles. As the organization has grown over the years, they have remained true to their core values and mission while proactively seeking to be a community that welcomes and integrates moms, staff, and AmeriCorps members from all faith traditions and walks of life around a common purpose.

Maggie’s Place uses a trauma-informed care approach to provide foundational building blocks for development, learning, and health throughout a person’s lifetime. Maggie’s Place moms can stay in one of their homes until their child turns one. No matter the length of time a mom spends with the organization, whether it’s one day or 18 months, she is welcomed back to the Maggie’s Place community as an Alumni Mom.

Since their opening, Maggie’s Place has grown from one home to five and has hosted more than 1,100 moms and 800 babies. In addition to housing, Maggie’s Place provides comprehensive wraparound services and events at their centralized hub called the Family Success Center (FSC) in Phoenix. All current and Alumni Moms and their families are welcome to this space for classes, on-site counseling, workforce development, parent education, child enrichment, housing resources, and much more. Along with these services, the Family Success Center houses the administrative offices and donation storage space and is home to their community events, such as Mother’s Day and Christmas celebrations. Due to their growing community and the need for increased space for programming, offices, and physical donations, Maggie’s Place is currently expanding the physical footprint of the FSC as a strategic priority for their continued growth. Your generous giving can help provide valuable and life-changing services to women and children in need.

Use your tax credit to feed hungry neighbors through MFB’s four programs:

Food for Nonprofits: MFB Arizona provides food to over 280 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, churches, and other nonprofit organizations that provide food to those in need in the communities.

Disaster Relief: MFB Arizona provides relief to victims of natural disasters.

Miracle League of Arizona

Everyone deserves the opportunity to play baseball. That is the motto of the Miracle League of Arizona, a nonprofit that provides a safe, fun, and successful baseball experience for individuals with disabilities. Their organization serves over 300 individuals, believing they all deserve a major league experience, regardless of any mental, physical, or health-related challenges they may face. Players receive personalized jerseys and baseball cards, get to choose their own walk-up music and participate in a stadium built specifically for the special needs population.

Founded in 2006, the founders realized there was a need for such an opportunity for this oftenisolated group of people. They needed a place where they could go to get out and run around, be part of a team, socialize, and be included in the fun of a game. It took several years of construction and planning, but they officially opened their gates for the first time in March 2011. What started as 20 athletes playing one game on a Saturday has turned into over 300 athletes playing four days a week, year-round.

Players are assigned to teams based on their age and skill level. Each player is catered to based on their capabilities. Some players hit off a tee, others take live pitches, while others use adaptive equipment that swings the bat for them. Players are encouraged to do as much as they can on their own, but Miracle League’s team is there to help with the rest.

A significant component of the league program is friendship. Each player gets paired up with a one-on-one volunteer to be their friend and help them succeed in the game. From hand-over-hand assistance, to words of encouragement and high fives, volunteers add a fun and social element to the experience. Starting at the age of 10, these volunteers called buddies come from all walks of life, ages, and parts of the Valley to give their time to the players.

Military Assistance Mission (MAM)

Military Assistance Mission (MAM), a nonprofit organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, has been steadfast in its mission to support Arizona’s active duty military personnel, rank E5 and below, their families, and post-9/11 recipients of Purple Heart Certificates or Combat Action Badges since its inception in 2012. Through a range of programs and initiatives, MAM aims to provide essential assistance and morale-boosting activities to those in need. The organization’s Basic Needs program offers critical financial support to service members, assisting with rent, mortgage payments, auto-related expenses, utilities, and food costs. This program alleviates the financial strain faced by many military families and ensures they can meet their basic needs without undue hardship.

In addition to addressing financial challenges, MAM’s scholarship assistance program provides valuable support to service members pursuing higher education. By covering tuition fees, parking costs, and textbook expenses, this program removes barriers to educational advancement and empowers military personnel to reach their academic goals. This festive event features activities like photos with Santa, bounce houses, and complimentary food, creating cherished memories for all involved.

Furthermore, MAM’s ticket program offers military members the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities and entertainment at no cost. Through donated tickets, service members can access cultural events, sporting games, and other leisure activities, providing much-needed respite from the demands of military life.

Overall, the Military Assistance Mission’s comprehensive approach to supporting Arizona’s military community encompasses financial assistance, educational support, and morale-boosting initiatives. By addressing the diverse needs of service members and their families, MAM remains a vital resource and source of support for those who serve our country.

Mission of Mercy

When Robert Mendoza first visited a Mission of Mercy clinic in the Metro Phoenix area, he was a poorly controlled diabetic who was recently released from the hospital after a blood infection almost took his life. Like a lot of uninsured Arizonans, the emergency department was the only resource he turned to for his healthcare needs. He was no longer able to work due to nerve damage in his legs that caused severe pain, and he had high cholesterol and early kidney damage from diabetes. Robert was denied AHCCCS, but was referred to Mission of Mercy by a friend. Robert’s story is not unlike many Mission of Mercy patients. Caring for Arizona’s uninsured and under-insured populations is a big task, but it’s one that Mission of Mercy has been doing with dignity and compassion since 1997.

“Our patients have very limited budgets and as a result, they put their health at the very bottom of their priority list,” said Mission of Mercy Medical Director Brad Smith, NMD. “Unfortunately, many patients can’t even afford the cheapest medications, let alone money for food, the electric bill or transportation.” Too many of our neighbors, like Robert, are slipping through the cracks of the healthcare system. They are left uninsured or with copays and deductibles so high they cannot afford essential care and medication. Mission of Mercy Arizona works to restore dignity and provide healing through access to free healthcare via six healthcare clinics for those in need in Maricopa County. Volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and interpreters meet each patient with compassion, seeking to heal body, soul and mind of our neighbors who often feel invisible and forgotten.

By donating through the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, you ensure patients can access:

• Quality primary care check-ups

• Services to manage chronic conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes

• Life-saving medications

• Individualized health and nutrition education

Please join in their work to restore dignity and provide healing through love.

Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health

Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health (NOAH) has provided affordable, high-quality healthcare services throughout Maricopa County for over 25 years. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), NOAH is focused on reducing barriers to healthcare including cost, lack of insurance, language, culture, and other social determinants of health. NOAH was established in 1997 in response to concerns that many students in area schools lacked access to healthcare services. Volunteers and a nurse practitioner began offering on the spot care at schools across Scottsdale and north Phoenix. By 2001, NOAH had deployed a mobile clinic and established a brick-and-mortar health center at the Palomino Primary School in the Paradise Valley Unified School District.

Recognizing the community need was larger than school-aged children, NOAH became a 501(c)(3) organization in 2011, achieved FQHC status in 2013, and began supporting children, youth, adults, and seniors. The Palomino Health Center grew to serve adults and children and added dental care while NOAH opened the Heuser and Paiute Clinics in central Scottsdale. NOAH continued to grow and expand its footprint to areas throughout the Valley.

Today, NOAH consists of a team of nearly 500 healthcare providers, support staff, and administrators operating health centers in Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Glendale. Serving a diverse population of 50,000 neighbors at every stage of life, NOAH’s model of care places patients’ needs at the center of attention while delivering comprehensive health services including medical, dental, counseling and psychiatry, nutrition, pharmacy, preventative health education as well as resources and enrollment assistance.

NOAH relies on donations from individuals, foundations, and companies. Over the years, these donations have allowed them to expand programs and services and impact more lives in our community. Your donation helps NOAH continue to offer high quality healthcare services to those who need it the most. Everyone is welcome at NOAH regardless of insurance or financial status. Invest in youth and elevate communities. Imagine an Arizona where all children are safe. Can you imagine what Arizona will look like when they grow up? They can, and so can you.

The Problem: According to the US Census Bureau, poverty rates for children doubled in 2022. This is bad news for our communities, as 79% of those served are below state and national poverty levels. The CDC reports that rates of child abuse are five times higher for children in families with low socioeconomic status.

The Solution: Peer Solutions was founded in 1996 with the mission of peers working with peers to make the world a better place. Their program is called Trauma-Informed Primary Prevention (TIPP). TIPP programming is youth-led and developed, intergenerational, year-round, and evidence-driven. Activities include weekly lunch, afterschool, and summer programming; Monthly Coalition Meetings and Newsletters; Biannual Days at the AZ Capitol, including Shadow a Legislator Day; an Ongoing TIPP Talk Podcast; social media; service projects; and TIPP Certification. Several students refer to Peer Solutions as their family because, for many of them, this is the first time they feel part of a community that is safe, loving, and nurturing.

Together, they create future generations committed to building communities free from harm. They are not just instructing their youth on how to respond to shifting landscapes; they are developing the landscape architects of the future. In 2023, 94% of participants demonstrated more empathy, 85% felt more connected to adults in their lives, and 85% showed more respect since joining. 100% of family members agree their student cares more about the community, and 95% agree their student is more committed to school performance since joining. They reach an average of 5,000 adults and 16,728 youth annually. Your tax credit feeds kids, improves school performance, builds employment skills and lifetime volunteers, strengthens families, and saves lives.

“Please take a moment to witness Peer Solutions’ positive and permanent impact. This is truly one of the best investments to improve the well-being of all Arizona youth and families. Thank you for your consideration.” - Billy Bob Thornton, February 14, 2024.

Epic Kids Giving Back: Loving Library

Introducing Anaik Sachdev! This 11-year-old Paradise Valley resident started a nonprofit organization called Loving Library, which now has 14 chapters in Arizona, California, Texas, and the United Kingdom. The idea came to him after a personal experience with COVID in March 2020. Several of his family members contracted COVID, including his grandmother, who had to be hospitalized. During this time period, they were all isolated. Anaik would FaceTime his grandmother every day and realized how lonely it was for her. So, they decided to pass the time by reading books. After this experience, he wanted to do something to help patients in hospitals. He reached out to the mayor and began

the first chapter of Loving Library at Valleywise Health at the age of 9. Currently, they support a variety of organizations including Valleywise Health, Afghanistan Refugee Center, St. Joseph’s NICU, Childhelp, and more. One of Anaik’s favorite memories from Loving Library was when he dropped off books at Valleywise Health. A nurse had come out and told him how happy the patients were to be receiving books from a 9-year-old, which made him feel so good, and he knew that he wanted to continue Loving Library. Another one of his most memorable experiences was at Circle the City, a healthcare center for the homeless. As Anaik was dropping off books, a patient came out to him and told Anaik about himself and his love for reading.

There are many people who have been supporting Anaik and Loving Library. Some of the most notable are actually kids. These helpers are called ambassadors, and they each support an individual organization within Loving Library. One of their primary jobs is preparing and delivering books.

Donations that are sent to the ambassadors get stamped on the corner of the first blank page, and once 100 to 500 books have been donated, the ambassadors take the books to the organization they represent. They also help lead the raffles at

fundraising events, which is one of 12-year-old Sanaiya Badyal’s favorite activities. She’s currently an ambassador for Childhelp, an organization that provides treatment, intervention, and investigative services for abused or neglected children.

The Afghanistan Refugee Center is an additional organization that is supported by 9-year-old Jovin Sachdev, Anaik’s brother. He has a special connection to this center, as he became friends with a refugee at his school but was unable to fully connect with him due to a language barrier. Jovin decided to start another chapter of Loving Library at the Afghanistan Refugee Center to help his friend and his family.

Another ambassador who has been working with Loving Library since the start is Avaani Lallian, who is 12 years old. She supports Childhelp as well, and she loves donating the books because it gives her a really good feeling, knowing that kids are going to be happy seeing the books.

For more information on how to donate, visit thelovinglibrary.org.

Naya Seth, 13 years old, loves to read and write. She is a member of National Junior Honor Society and National Charity League and enjoys participating in various philanthropy activities.

RaeRae of Light

Congenital heart defects affect 1 in 100 babies born. 25% of those children suffer from critical congenital heart defects, which cause severe, life-threatening symptoms and require medical intervention within the first few hours, days, or months of life. Children affected by congenital heart defects face numerous challenges, both physical and emotional, from the moment they are born. There is no cure for CHD, and there is no proven cause. It can affect children of every demographic. It’s a lifelong disease requiring ongoing, specialized care. These complex medical conditions place a significant burden on the child’s family. In addition to the emotional toll of watching their child suffer with their health, families also face substantial financial hardships.

The team at RaeRae of Light understands what children and families go through after a congenital heart defect diagnosis. Their sweet baby Reagan was born with a severe heart defect that ultimately took her from them. While they are devastated, this volunteer-based, family-operated nonprofit is dedicated to honoring the short life of Reagan by creating awareness and providing financial assistance to families affected by CHD. Through the Rae It Forward Direct Family Support program, they support babies and children by assisting with medical expenses, household needs, utilities, gas, food, clothing and other basic necessities needed to improve the quality of life for the child. Their primary mission is to alleviate the financial burden that many families face with their medically complex children awaiting surgeries, inpatient care, heart transplants, or other life-saving procedures. The cost of medical expenses, travel, accommodations, and other related costs can quickly become overwhelming for families who are already facing incomprehensible emotional stress. By providing financial assistance, they can help reduce the added stress families face and enable them to focus on their child and better advocate for their care.

In addition to making a financial donation, you can help by purchasing the new Arizona Congenital Heart Defect specialty license plate. This plate benefits the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Heart Center for critical research, education, and community programs to lead children born with Congenital Heart Defects to longer, healthier lives.

Ryan House

Imagine a world where either you or someone you know couldn’t take a break from parenting because their child has a life-limiting condition requiring around-the-clock critical medical care. Parents of children who require this level of care are unable to rely on babysitters, extended family members, or engage in typical playdates or sleepovers because their children require intricate medical assistance and 24/7 treatments that are vital for their survival. These treatments can include the management of tracheostomy tubes, feeding tubes, and the monitoring of seizure disorders, among other critical responsibilities.

Enter Ryan House, an Arizona-based facility where children can be themselves in their loving community and live their lives to the fullest in a safe, homelike environment. Ryan House enriches the quality of life and creates cherished memories for children and their families, providing a much-needed break from 24/7 caregiving as they navigate life-limiting or end-of-life journeys.

Currently, there is no insurance reimbursement, and life-enhancing services are prohibitively expensive for most families. When a child has a terminal or medically complex illness, families’ tasks may be affected as they encounter unique challenges with finances, sibling relationships, parenting, marital stress, and handling the developmental milestones of their children while trying to maintain a normal social life. Ryan House is making a difference for families facing these challenges by providing them with a precious opportunity to step away from nonstop caregiving and find relief from the extraordinary stress of their daily lives. While families take a much-needed break, Ryan House’s dedicated expert care team eagerly welcomes their children with open arms and open hearts. Ryan House offers short-term respite stays (up to seven consecutive days for a total of 28 days in a calendar year) that provide children with complex medical needs with an unmatched experience in a safe, loving environment.

Families are never charged for the care provided, which is only possible with your support. Every dollar donated makes a tremendous impact. Thank you for being a source of hope and light in the lives of these children and their families.

Soldier’s Best Friend

Soldier’s Best Friend provides U.S. military veterans living with combat-related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with service or therapeutic companion dogs, most of which are rescued from local shelters. Helping the veteran and dog train together builds a trusting relationship that touches two lives at once and inspires countless others.

Their dedication to pairing and training service dogs with veterans - at no cost to the veteran - is also making a positive impact on the pet overpopulation problem.

“My experience with Soldier’s Best Friend has been life-changing,” says veteran Ric, who was matched with his new best friend, Wilfred. “Coping with civilian life has become more manageable. I often imagine how simple life is for my buddy Wilfred; it keeps it all in perspective. When things get too much, my buddy is there. From the restless nights to the difficult situations, I have something that has been an elusive possibility—I have hope again. I consider myself fortunate to have had this opportunity. Having this service animal has given me both an outlet for coping and restored much of my confidence. Thanks to Soldier’s Best Friend and the generous donors who made this all possible.”

Financial donations aside, there are also a wide range of volunteer opportunities including administrative duties, bulk mailing, building maintenance, yard work and more. Their annual fundraising events, including the 13th Annual Sporting Clay Event on March 23rd, rely heavily on volunteers.

Soldier’s Best Friend is an Arizona Qualifying Charitable Organization (QCO). This means individuals will receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on their Arizona state return, up to $400 for individuals and $800 when filing jointly. Please consider supporting them and their life-saving programs.

Organizations Teen Lifeline

Preventing teen suicide continues to be the clear mission and focus of Teen Lifeline, as it has been for 37 years. The staff and volunteers envision a world where teenagers feel connected and hopeful for their future. They accomplish this by listening to teens who are experiencing a crisis, enhancing teens’ resiliency and ability to cope with their problems, and creating and fostering supportive communities. Can you help support their dream of a future without suicide? Teen Lifeline programs and services enlist the help of teen volunteers to provide education, training, life skills coaching, and a brighter future for teens in crisis.

Their work is focused on changing the alarming reality that today’s teens are struggling to deal with ever-greater social and psychosocial stresses without adequate coping skills and prevention resources by:

• Training parents, teachers, and community members on how to prevent teen suicide and increase protective factors for youth.

• Providing outreach to schools to enhance teenagers’ resilience while educating them about suicide prevention. In 2023, Teen Lifeline provided prevention education to nearly 171,000 students, parents, and educators.

• Training teen peer counselors to answer calls and texts to the Teen Lifeline peer-to-peer hotline. In 2023, volunteer peer counselors answered 21,087 calls and 26,874 text messages from children and teens in crisis.

For youths to possess a sense of connection and hope for their future, we must help them develop resilience as individuals while creating support within their communities. Teen Lifeline answers teens’ calls for help 24/7/365. Every call and every text is a plea for someone to listen. They are looking for a connection—to speak with someone who understands what it’s like to be a teenager in today’s turbulent world.

As a community, we owe it to the next generation to make every effort to prevent these young people from suffering in silence.

YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix

Since 1912, YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements—from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity. Today, YWCA combines programming, learnings, and advocacy to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and food insecurity for seniors. YWCA’s mission lives in the hearts of its employees, volunteers, and partners and demands a world of equity and human decency.

One of YWCA’s core programs is the Prosperity Program, which provides a holistic look at personal prosperity and community health. Individuals learn about financial independence and empowerment through a comprehensive money management curriculum, are provided useful tools to prioritize mental wellbeing, and increase their participation in civic engagement through meaningful action steps.

The program provides critical skills to participants through workshops such as Banking Basics; Budgeting; Credit; Debit; Homeownership; Goals; Insurance 101; Know Your Worth: Wage Negotiation; Resume Building; Savings; Vision Boards and Goals; and Renting 101. Those who participate in the program receive invaluable support in achieving significant milestones, such as purchasing their first home, securing employment, and managing debt. A donation of $100 to YWCA can fund four women to attend a Renting 101 workshop, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to advocate for their rights as renters and transition their families into stable housing. Your generosity not only sustains this vital program but also helps build generational wealth for families throughout Phoenix.

The impact of YWCA’s work is best expressed through the voices of those who have benefited. As one previous participant shared, “I bought a home! The class prepared me a lot for the entire experience. I am now happily sitting in my new home.” With your support, YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix continues to empower individuals and communities, creating lasting change and opportunities for all. Women4Women

Women4Women Tempe, Inc is a local 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to help homeless and low-income women in our communities by providing feminine hygiene products to those in need. This significantly improves these women’s ability to maintain dignity and self-respect. It also drastically improves feminine health. By coordinating efforts between their all-volunteer team and over 45 different agencies, they distribute approximately 4,000 bags of feminine hygiene products to women in need each year. Their team works diligently with health facilities, schools, homeless outreach programs, women, and family shelters. They were prompted to start their nonprofit because the thought of being a woman without the safety and security of a home, while having a menstrual cycle, and not having appropriate supplies is devastating. Knowing that there are young mothers with limited financial means to afford both diapers and feminine hygiene were both huge issues that needed to be addressed. Since inception they have worked tirelessly to serve these women in need.

The number of homeless and low-income women increases each year in our community. Many require the use of feminine hygiene products each month, the cost of which is not covered by SNAP (food stamps) and too expensive for many women to afford. Women4Women Tempe believes these items should be available to those women who need them. In 2023, they were able to give out these necessary items to over 5,000 women. Donors and volunteers make this possible and your donation can dramatically ease the burden of these women they aim to serve.

In 2019, Women4Women Tempe was accepted into the Alliance for Period Supplies which is a nationwide organization that works to help individuals in need access menstrual products required for daily life. U by Kotex is the founding sponsor, and they are extremely honored to be accepted.

Women4Women Tempe quietly and discretely impacts women throughout our communities by providing menstruating people with supplies. Their logo says, “Dignity. Health. Period.” and through your generous donations of time and funding, it allows all women to improve their dignity and health. PERIOD.

Foster Care Organizations

Aid to Adoption of Special Kids (AASK)

Aid to Adoption of Special Kids (AASK) has been serving kids and teens in Arizona’s foster care system for 35 years by matching them with supportive, caring adults through foster care, adoption, and mentoring. AASK firmly believes that relationships matter, leading to nearly 130 successful adoptions each year, in addition to nearly 700 youth being placed with AASK foster families. With these adults and families by their side, children in foster care not only feel loved and supported, but their confidence also grows, giving them the power to dream big and imagine a bright future. This often leads them to break the cycle of abuse, trauma, and neglect that can result in generations of foster care placements.

Two of the organization’s most unique programs are the kinship and mentoring programs. AASK’s kinship program focuses on families caring for a relative’s child, typically grandparents raising their grandchildren. These caregivers often take on the responsibility unexpectedly but willingly, with little to no support from the state. AASK provides a dedicated team to offer one-on-one support for each of these families, as well as an entire website dedicated to answering their questions at their convenience.

AASK’s unique mentoring program primarily serves youth ages 9 to 15 living in group homes, who are particularly vulnerable to addiction, poverty, and unstable housing. These kids and teens often feel neglected, believing that the only adults in their lives are the staff paid to care for them. The mentoring program pairs them with adult mentors who want to spend time with them, get to know them, and have fun together. AASK provides a dedicated team to offer support and answer questions for both the kinship and mentoring programs.

Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation

The Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF) creates opportunities to build self-esteem and empower children and youth in foster care by funding services to enrich their lives and ensure their successful transition to adulthood. AFFCF works to change the story for young people in foster care through three key impact areas: childhood/normalcy activities, Keys to Success, and post-secondary programs.

The daily foster home rate paid by the state for each child in foster care is $19 per day. That barely covers the necessities. AFFCF eases the financial burden on foster families by funding normal, everyday childhood activities and experiences, such as summer camp, sports, tutoring, music lessons, and more, that every child should get to experience.

One of the biggest gaps in foster care is the way in which we prepare and assist older youth as they exit the foster care system. Our Keys to Success program delivers essential career, education, and employment development services that young people need to achieve both personal and financial freedom. Keys to Success is working to eliminate obstacles such as transportation, housing, and a lack of vital documents such as birth certificates and social security cards, that can prevent youth from obtaining employment.

Three percent of youth with foster care backgrounds will earn a post-secondary degree. AFFCF seeks to improve this statistic through our post-secondary programs. Not only do we provide financial aid to help cover the costs of a college education, but we also provide financial assistance to address the unexpected curveballs in life that can prevent them from completing their education. AFFCF also conducts regular check-ins with scholars to see how they are progressing, as well as providing opportunities for our scholars to connect and create a community of support. As we celebrate 40 years of impact in 2024, AFFCF has paid more than $19 million in awards, serving nearly 85,000 children and youth across Arizona. Your foster care tax credit donation to AFFCF can help us change the lives of even more children and youth in foster care. Please give today!

Child Crisis Arizona

Child Crisis Arizona exists to provide children and youth in Arizona with a safe environment, free from abuse and neglect, by creating strong and successful families. For over 47 years, Child Crisis Arizona has responded to community needs to both prevent and intervene in child abuse or neglect and strengthen families. Child Crisis Arizona continues to grow successful programs, identify unmet needs, and seek creative solutions to satisfy those needs. They strive to serve more children and families to realize their vision of a community filled with “safe kids and strong families.”

Their work falls into two broad areas: child abuse prevention and intervention when child abuse or neglect has occurred. Prevention programs include Early Education Services offering Early Head Start and Preschool for low-income children and families; Family Education/Safe Kids Maricopa offers free caregiver education to avoid child abuse, neglect, or unintentional injury; Healthy Families Arizona connects parents of newborns with access to resources for positive parenting and childhood development; and FANS Resource Distribution Center provides free basic needs items to children, youth, and families in crisis. Intervention programs serve children and youth who are or have been part of the child welfare system. Programs include the Emergency Children’s Shelter, Group Homes, Independent Living Program, Children’s Refugee Services, Foster Care and Adoption Licensing, Kinship Foster Care, Extended Foster Care for youth aging out of foster care ages 18-21, and Counseling. In 2024, Child Crisis Arizona acquired Whispering Hope Ranch and will continue to offer transformational animal therapy all-ability camp experiences to youth and adults in Arizona.

Since 1977, they have offered residential emergency shelter to 34,556 children and provided foster care and/ or adoption to 7,595. Each day, they serve hundreds of homeless children and youth in foster care systems in their multiple emergency placement locations and foster/adoptive homes. Over their history, programs have provided 82,246 adults and children with family education and stabilization services and early childhood education and wraparound services to 4,480 low-income children and families. Through the direct distribution of basic needs items to families, they have served 7,741. In 2023, across all programs, the agency served 42,888 unduplicated individuals.

Qualified Foster Care Organizations Hope and a Future

Founded in 2004, it is celebrating 20 years of supporting Arizona foster kids. They receive no government funding and fully operate through donations and the Foster Care Tax Credit. Support allows them to form relationship-based connections through summer camps, life-skills training, mentoring, tutoring, and educational scholarships.

Beginning at summer camp, where they have served over 3,600 foster children over the years, they begin walking life with them, staying connected throughout the year at monthly events and celebrating holidays, birthdays, and graduations with them. They make a difference, one foster child at a time. Through intentional programs, they improve foster kids’ long-term outcomes by offering them hope and a brighter future.

Some of their annual events include the following:

Car 101: Do you know how to change a tire or check your oil? What about how auto insurance works? If you do, most likely you learned from your parents or a family member. Many of their youth miss out on these life lessons, so their Cars 101 event educates kids about basic car care knowledge and minor car maintenance.

Cooking 101: Some of their kids have never had the opportunity to learn to cook, so their Cooking 101 event provides them with an opportunity to experience a few hours cooking up something nutritious and hopefully delicious.

Finances: What is a budget? Is a credit score important? How much money will be taken from my paycheck for taxes? What are taxes, and why do we have to pay them? What exactly is insurance, and why do I need it? These are some questions their youth ask, and at this educational event, they provide answers for them.

Arizonans for Children

Arizonans for Children Inc., incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, exists to facilitate opportunities and provide effective solutions to alleviate hardships and improve the fragile lives of abused, abandoned, and neglected children in foster care. This challenging journey often involves multiple moves, inconsistent caregiving, and emotional trauma stemming from feeling helpless and isolated.

Arizonans for Children offer free mentors for children in foster care around Maricopa County and some outlying areas. Mentoring a child in care can be a great way to invest in the future generation, discover new things, and simply have fun. It also gives children the chance to develop leadership and communication skills.

Arizonans for Children opened the state’s first Children’s Visitation Center in Phoenix in January 2003. This center, which is the foundation for all of Arizona’s children’s programs, provides a safe, home-like environment where supervised family visitations and bonding activities can take place. Due to the intense community need and the success of the first center, in June 2007, they opened their second center in Desert Heritage Church in Mesa. Since their inception in January 2003 through June 30, 2023, they have served 1,003,375 people.

It is a sad fact that prior to the opening of the Children’s Visitation Centers, these visits took place in cramped offices. These places generally increase a child’s fear and apprehension while doing nothing to nurture and restore the parent-child relationship.

The Center in downtown Phoenix offers a game room, nursery, toddler room, large living room settings, and outside playground. The Center in Mesa has a dining room, outside playground, nursery, game room and large visitation rooms.

Arizonans for Children takes foster children on excursions to many unique cultural activities and centers throughout Arizona. Using teams of volunteers and in-kind donations, they can provide foster children with a variety of experiences that will broaden their view of the world and their place in it.

With the help of the community, they will continue to support these children for many years to come. Join in their mission to better future generations.

OCJ Kids

OCJ Kids has been providing resources to Arizona foster children since 2006. Founded by Gary and Tamara Webb with the mission to provide opportunity, create community, and fight for justice for foster children, they connect and create purposeful futures for those children in foster care.

Basic emergency resources, including clothing, hygiene products, diapers, wipes, and gift cards for emergency food, are distributed throughout Arizona monthly. OCJ Kids partners with local businesses and faith communities to provide opportunities for the children to navigate their journey through foster care. These opportunities include the Adulting Summit, Apprentice to Permanency, Summer Enrichment, Tools for Success, One Bright Star, and The Restoring Dignity Room.

Throughout the year, children and teens living in the foster group homes are connected with volunteers to participate in activities designed to keep them learning, create opportunities for healing, and prepare them for independent living after aging out of foster care.

Their partnership with Northern Arizona University’s Occupational Therapy School has resulted in several resources to assist those caring for children with developmental delays due to trauma, including the Beyond Trauma Training provided to teens who have aged out of foster care. This partnership allows OCJ Kids to assist teen moms within the foster care system with resources, including a guide for parenting newborns and a guide for parenting toddlers.

Arizona has a beautiful community. The heart of their neighbors to impact the children they serve is the backbone of what they do at OCJ Kids. Volunteer teams assist with gathering resources, building resource kits, assisting with big events, and mentoring children and teens in the foster group homes. They welcome you to join them! You can volunteer or donate funds and resources.

Voices for CASA Children

Voices for CASA Children (VOICES) brings a voice to Arizona’s children by promoting and supporting volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children and raising public awareness of the importance of safe and permanent homes for all children.

Voices supports the expansion of the Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program in Arizona. There are approximately 550 court-appointed special advocates in Maricopa County and 9,000 foster care children in the State of Arizona. A CASA volunteer is the voice for a child in foster care, advocating for his or her best interests and helping them find a safe, permanent home. CASA Volunteers listen through monthly visits to get to know their CASA child and seek information f rom key players in the child’s life. They advocate by informing the court of the best interest of the child. They are everyday heroes; no special background is needed. Extensive training and ongoing support are provided.

Working in collaboration with CASA of Maricopa County since 2011, VOICES serves hundreds of Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers and their appointed children each year. In everything they do, they believe in giving every voiceless child a brighter future. They do this by recruiting and supporting CASA volunteers; by creating opportunities that help every child know that they are cared for and safe; and by engaging the community to help drive awareness about the plight of Arizona’s abused and neglected children.

With a strong desire to increase the number of CASA volunteers in Maricopa County, VOICES has a number of programs to assist in the recruitment, education, and retention of these volunteers as well as provide resources directly to the children. Voices engages the community to share the story of children in foster care and works with potential volunteers to understand the commitment and rewards of taking on the role of advocacy.

Epic Kids Giving Back: A Heart for Giving

Jax Logan O’Connor was living with his mom and her parents in Prescott when they came down with COVID. While they were recovering, he went to stay with his grandmother, TamaraLynn Tadano, his father’s mother, in Phoenix. At the time she was busy making soap to distribute to the homeless.

“He saw what I was doing and asked if he could help and from there he just took over,” says TamaraLynn. Five-year-old Jax has since gone on to take adult classes to learn hot and cold processes to make soap and he’s now adept at using lye, water, and oils to make soap.

Jax and his grandmother started packaging the soap in gift bags and distributing the bags to Phoenix homeless. “He has a real intuition on if a person is open and friendly, or not,” says his grandma, who never lets Jax out of her sight when they visit homeless encampments. She’s also quick to point out that she always makes the initial contact.

“If the person isn’t friendly or doesn’t want attention, Jax will leave the bag at their tent, or by a bush where they’re camped out. If they’re open and excited about it, he’ll just go over, chat, and love on them,” she says. Many of them say, “‘Oh, I’m dirty,’” TamaraLynn explains. “A lot of them aren’t used to anyone being near them or anyone recognizing them as human.” Jax’s enthusiasm and openness at giving them

soap he’s made usually puts a huge smile on the faces of the homeless he visits. Recently, Jax and his grandmother have been partnering with U.S. Vets, an organization that provides housing, workforce development, and case management to veterans transitioning from homelessness to housing. Jax has worked on three events for the organization and in the process made 185 bars of soap for the veterans who are staying in U.S. Vets’ transition facility.

“It’s a safer environment than visiting homeless camps and he’s reaching more people,” she says of Jax’s involvement with U.S. Vets. Helping others runs in the family. Jax’s dad is a veteran and lives in Prescott, where he’s starting a non-profit to open a ranch for homeless veterans to offer horse therapy and a place to heal and get job skills.

“One time I said to him, ‘Why don’t we make some fun soap just for you. He made three bars and stopped. He didn’t want to do it just for fun.” Jax also doesn’t want to sell the soap, according to his grandma. “He makes it to give to people. He just has this innate desire to help others and put a smile on their faces.”

Great Hearts Academies

At Great Hearts Academies, the purpose is to cultivate the minds and hearts of students through the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Great Hearts Academies is the leading provider of K–12 classical education in the country, serving over 15,000 students in Arizona, with an additional 11,000 students in Louisiana and Texas, plus over 10,000 scholars across the country on the waitlist. A Great Hearts education prepares students to be more than just proficient test takers, but rather to become great-hearted leaders capable of success throughout their higher education and professional careers.

With a curriculum built upon a classical liberal arts tradition and a revolutionary approach to school itself, scholars are guided through developing critical thinking skills, structured learning environments, and lessons based on works from Plato, Socrates, Michelangelo, DaVinci, and many more. In fact, the educational model is so effective that 47% of the 2023 graduating class did so with honors, an average weighted GPA of 4.14, and earned almost $51,000,000 in merit-based scholarships to colleges across the United States. The scholars are truly setting the bar for academic achievement in Arizona.

But Great Hearts Academic needs help to continue this amazing and impactful work. Although Great Hearts Academies are tuition-free for all scholars, they rely on charitable support to help cover the operating costs needed to deliver their robust educational model, which includes two teachers in each elementary classroom and special courses such as art, poetry, music, and foreign languages on a daily basis. Epic Kids Giving Back: Keepsakes for Charity

Photo courtesy of the Lofgran family

Fourteen-year-old Lauren Lofgran has spent nearly half of her life raising money for organizations near and dear to her heart––and she’s just getting started.

What started out as an idea to make flower pressed bookmarks for the Mesa Public Library when she was 7 has turned into yearly fundraising endeavors for various charities that tug at Lauren’s heart. Most recently, the seventh grader crafted Disneyland ornaments out of mason jar lids for Helen’s Hope Chest, a Mesa charity that helps kids in foster care.

“We had some friends who went to Disneyland, and we asked them to pick us up some of the free maps,” says Lauren’s mom Andrea. Lauren used the maps to paste on jar lids before adding a Disney charm. “She let people know that the ornaments were free but if a person wanted to make a donation, it would go to Helen’s Hope Chest,” says Andrea. On Dec. 22, Lauren and Andrea presented the charity with a check for $245 and an ornament.

After a tour of the facility, Lauren was pleased to see where the money she’d raised would be going. “I liked that they are helping families and foster kids,” she says. “They might have one outfit and nothing to play with. Helen’s Hope Chest lets the kids pick out outfits and gives them toys.”

Over the years, Lauren has raised money for several organizations with her creative keepsakes. In addition to raising almost $700 for the Mesa Public Library with her bookmarks, she raised nearly $300 with a hot chocolate stand for Kids Need to Read, a Mesa charity that helps children discover the joy of reading. As an avid reader, Lauren hopes the money will fund efforts to inspire reading in youth. When Ballet Arizona couldn’t hold performances because of COVID, including Lauren’s beloved “Nutcracker,” she made Nutcracker bracelets and sold $300 worth for the organization. She’s also made painted owl rocks to raise funds for Liberty Wildlife.

“You get a great feeling knowing you’re helping someone,” says Lauren, who wants to be a neurosurgeon when she grows up. “I want to help people by making them feel better.”

WHY DONATE?

It’s a win-win situation. Your donation gives students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, while you receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on your taxes.

What does my donation pay for?

School tax credit donations help pay for extracurricular activities. Funds can apply to sports, art, music and character education programs & most after-school student clubs.

How much can I donate?

A person filing their tax return individually may contribute up to $200. Married couples filing jointly may contribute up to $400.

Who can donate?

Any Arizona taxpayer can make a tax credit donation, regardless of whether or not they have children in school.

I have been donating money to schools for years, what’s the difference?

Contributions to schools have always been tax deductible. A tax deduction allows you to subtract the amount of a contribution from the amount of your taxable income. The Arizona Tax Credit Program allows a tax credit, which is subtracted from the amount of taxes you owe.

What is the difference between a tax credit and tax deduction?

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax owed. A tax deduction only reduces total taxable income from which the taxed owed is calculated.

Can I choose which extracurricular activities my money should benefit?

Yes, you can indicate areas of allocation, such as a student club or activity. Designation must be made at the time of donation.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Can I use tax credit to pay for extracurricular activity fees?

Yes. To apply your tax credit donation toward payment of activity fees you must specifically designate it as a tax credit donation during the initial payment of the activity fee.

If I get a refund from the state, will I still benefit from this tax credit?

Yes, your refund will increase by the amount you contribute. For example, you have paid $400 in state taxes during the year through payroll deductions, and you are receiving a $100 refund. You also made a $200 contribution to a school and are receiving a $200 tax credit. You would then receive a $300 refund.

What do I submit with my taxes as proof of this contribution?

You must submit the receipt from the school. Once you have given your contribution to the school representative, a receipt will be provided to you for tax purposes.

When can I participate?

Right Now! A contribution made on or before April 15th following the close of the taxable year may be applied to either the current or preceding taxable year and is considered to have been made on the  last day of that taxable year.

Please make a donation online by scanning the QR Code or go to: www.TempeUnion. org/WaysToDonate for different methods of donation.

• Checks must be made payable to the school.

• A person filing their tax return individually may contribute up to $200. Married couples filing jointly may contribute up to $400. Contact your tax advisor for more information.

Public School Tax Credit Tempe Union High School District

Nestled in the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area, the Tempe Union High School District serves approximately 11,000 students in six comprehensive high schools. The district encompasses 162 square miles and serves the city of Tempe, the town of Guadalupe, the Gila River Indian Community, the Ahwatukee Foothills area of Phoenix, and parts of Chandler. Tempe Union’s comprehensive high schools include Tempe High, McClintock, Marcos de Niza, Corona del Sol, Mountain Pointe, and Desert Vista.

The Peggy Payne Academy for gifted students is located on the McClintock campus, and Prides Peak for gifted and talented students is located on the Mountain Pointe campus. The district’s International Baccalaureate Program resides at Tempe High. The W.P. Carey Business Academy at Marcos de Niza helps students gain entrance into ASU’s acclaimed business school. Career and technical education programs provide students with real-world experience and certifications. Dual enrollment programs allow students to gain college credit while still in high school. Outside the classroom, they offer awardwinning fine arts, extracurricular, and athletic programs.

Their belief that every student can learn drives all they do, and student success tells this story. They put students’ academic and social/emotional needs at the forefront of everything they do. Their students consistently score well above state, district, and national averages on standardized tests and college entrance exams. They celebrate the individuality of all their students and strive to meet students’ social and emotional needs in addition to their academic goals.

School tax credit donations help pay for fees associated with a broad array of extracurricular activities. Through the support of generous donations, they can provide students with the opportunity to play a variety of sports, participate in art programs, music programs, and most after-school student clubs. Whatever personal interests are, opportunities can be found at one of their schools that would allow their students to continue their personal development and become the best version of themselves.

Tempe Union believes that students come first, and tax credit donations help offer opportunities that make a world of difference to their students.

CTE PROGRAMS ARE SHAPING FUTURES IN TEMPE’S HIGH SCHOOLS

Students gain valuable insights both inside and outside of school through CTE programs. These programs have been integral to the U.S. education system for over a century, originating in the early 1920s. Despite a decline

in support during the 1980s and 1990s, when the concept was more narrowly defined as “vocational education,” today CTE has exploded in popularity. Tempe Union High School offers over 60 CTE programs, and almost half of

the 11,500 district students are enrolled in one or more programs.

CTE offers students hands-on training, internships, and the opportunity to tap into the latest technology and trends of a given industry. Unlike the former vocational programs, CTE programs can culminate in postsecondary degrees or certificates. Students work with industry professionals and receive certification upon completion of programs that allow them to take their classroom learning and apply it to the real world. These programs have helped students earn multiple certifications, ranging from food handler cards to security guard certificates. A local Marcos De Niza High School student says, “These programs have granted me multiple job

opportunities currently and will help me prepare for my future.”

Tempe Union has industry advisors for all CTE programs, and students are required to have multiple direct industry interactions every year. Ultimately, all programs are designed to provide maximum opportunities for high school students to learn in-demand skills and a fast track to the workforce.

Each February, the Association for Career and Technical Education celebrates CTE month. Results from the annual review by Arizona’s Department of Education indicate that all 62 programs offered by Tempe Union High School District were ranked as fully compliant with 95% ranked as “distinguished quality,” which is the highest rating ADE gives out. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DEDUCTION AND A TAX CREDIT?

is the difference between a deduction and a tax credit?

A deduction reduces the amount of your income upon which the tax is determined. A credit reduces your tax liability as if you had already paid the tax.

While the following pages contain organizations do not qualify for a tax credit, donations to these 501(c)(3) nonprofits qualify for an itemized deduction from your income. Because the tax rate is then applied to a reduced income, this can minimize your overall tax liability.

As you engage with these organizations, consider the dual impact your support can have—on the causes you champion and on the potential positive adjustments to your federal tax burden. Join the movement towards a better Arizona, knowing that your generosity can ripple through both the community and your financial landscape. As always, consult with you tax advisor to determine if your charitable donation or portion of your charitable donation is tax-deductible.

In 4-H programs, children and teens learn by doing. They discover their own pathway based on their interests and are guided by adult mentors. Act One

Act One provides meaningful arts experiences that enhance the academic and creative potential of children and families across Arizona. Act One makes the arts accessible to thousands of children and families in Arizona each year through three distinct programs: field trips for preK-12 students from Title I schools, the Arts Immersion™ Virtual Reality Field Trip program that brings arts education directly to classrooms, and its Culture Pass program available in libraries around the state.

Russ and Mac Perlich started the nonprofit organization to address issues faced by schools and arts organizations when planning field trips. Although many theater companies offered student matinees, low-income schools could not afford the tickets and transportation necessary to pursue an impactful event. The solution became Act One’s signature program: Act One Field Trips.

Act One sends students from Title I schools on educational arts field trips and covers the cost of admission tickets and transportation. Act One facilitates the field trips from start to finish: securing tickets with the arts organizations, working with teachers to book field trips, paying for transportation, and providing educational materials that teachers can integrate into their curricula and prepare students for their art experience.

In 2021, Act One launched its newest program and began creating arts education content using virtual reality. Act One’s curated, groundbreaking virtual reality field trip program, Arts Immersion™, allows schools, libraries, senior living facilities, and community organizations to explore the world of art from anywhere. Act One VR specialists travel to urban, rural, and remote locations in Arizona in two donated vans with custom “bus cases” filled with 100 VR headsets and built-in Wi-Fi. The second season of the virtual reality series is set to launch this spring focusing on Indigenous Arizona artists.

Lastly, Act One adopted the Culture Pass program perfect for all Arizona families. By “checking out” a Culture Pass at one of nearly 175 libraries across the state, library cardholders receive free admission for two to one of the many museums, theaters, and cultural sites that participate in the program. For more information about Act One programs or to donate, visit their website.

AZ Aces

Founded in 2007, the Arizona Adverse Childhood Experiences Consortium (AZ ACEs) envisions a traumainformed Arizona that nurtures hope and the growth, healing and resiliency of individuals and communities. They are the leading authority on childhood trauma and, more importantly, what can be done to treat and prevent it. By deploying system-wide solutions that create safe, stable communities across Arizona, they build community resilience through authentic human engagement. AZ ACEs is a diverse group of individuals working together to create a strong and productive Arizona where good health is available to all.

AZ ACEs uses a statewide network of trained and certified professionals from behavioral health, education, government, and social work. They provide networking, trainings, and resources to reduce, heal and prevent the epidemic of childhood adversity in Arizona. No other group in Arizona has the existing infrastructure, diverse network, proven experience, and growing capacity to design and mobilize a trained cadre of behavioral health professionals to tackle the epidemic of childhood trauma where it can be most targeted. These programs are immediate and impactful - in schools and community organizations serving the vast majority of Arizona children and families.

Their services are determined by the needs identified within the communities they work with. All communities are unique in their strengths and resilience. By working with leaders within organizations, schools, and communities, AZ ACEs is able to co-create the trainings and services most needed. Providing this support early allows communities to put into place a framework that catches children before they fall, so that they can reach their full potential. Studies show that these kinds of early investments pay off for everyone because a child with a solid foundation grows into to someone who contributes to our society and economy for a lifetime. In a nutshell, Arizona’s future prosperity depends on its ability to foster the health and well-being of the next generation and that is AZ ACESs mission.

Every dollar you donate allows AZ ACEs to provide free programming and deliver training and networking to communities, schools, and organizations across Arizona, which you, as the experts within your own communities, have requested of them.

Arizona Heart Foundation

The Arizona Heart Foundation was established in 1971 by Edward B. Diethrich, MD, an internationally renowned cardiovascular surgeon, to develop and support research and educational programs in the area of cardiovascular disease. And heart disease is still the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S.! Someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds in the U.S. That’s approximately 800,000 people that have a heart attack annually - 75% of those are happening for the first time and, an astounding 20% of those are “silent deaths,” where the damage is done, but the person is not aware of it.

From administering a nationwide heart test, to participating in the research and development of the newest technologies and therapies, AHF has established itself as a leading authority not only in the identification and prevention of cardiovascular disease, but also for its professional and community education and outreach initiatives.

AHF has conducted health screenings throughout the Valley for almost 40 years. AHF selected physicians were deployed to major corporations to provide executive physicals and preventive screenings. Additionally, they provide cardiac ultrasound exams to further detect “unknown” heart conditions and provide complimentary ultrasound exams in communities throughout the state and to high school athletes requiring physicals. These are only a sampling of the ways AHF has been dedicated to providing education to the public and to its patients, so that they would be better informed about their individual risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Prevention is better than cure, especially when it comes to heart health. AHF’s Cardiovascular Initiative provides complimentary ultrasound screenings to the Arizona community. These screenings are crucial in early detection and prevention of heart disease, embodying their commitment to a proactive approach to health and well-being. But the ultrasound machines and scanning technologies are expensive, so they need your help to ensure that you don’t become a statistic. Donate today, then visit azheartfoundation.org/community-outreach to schedule a complimentary cardiovascular ultrasound scan.

Camp Grace

Project Elevate at Camp Grace

Camp Grace’s legacy began in 1953 as a young women’s church camp where girls ages 12-18 came together to camp and play and craft and sing among the tall pines at the top of the Mogollon Rim at almost 7,000 feet elevation. After falling into disrepair over the decades since then, the Brimhall Family saved Camp Grace in 2019. Their passion is to stay true to the rich history of Camp Grace by revitalizing the grounds and expanding the opportunities of adventurers through Project Elevate, their nonprofit whose goal is to help youth discover their passions and skills that help and guide them throughout their lives. Summer camp is more than fun and games; it is an invaluable experience that shapes a child’s future. Research shows that 62% of children participating in adventure programs, like those offered at Camp Grace, have lasting impacts on life preparation, skill development, a sense of knowing who they are, and development of grit (American Camp Association), while intentional outside of school activities increase the odds of being gifted by 50% and reduce school dropout rates by 40% (census.gov).

Camp Grace believes that all children should have the opportunity to flourish and experience lifelong change found in summer camps. Their screen-free adventure camp is run by education experts and medical practitioners that focus on evidence-based learning, while their team of experienced counselors foster a supportive and inclusive environment, encouraging campers to build confidence, forge new friendships, and embrace their individuality.

Outdoor adventures like yoga, hiking, ziplining, science exploration, art projects, horseback riding, team chants, etc. naturally produce the Five Happy Hormones. These hormones of dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline, endorphins and oxytocin naturally result in improved happiness, creativity, intelligence, unity, and compassion.

By sponsoring an at-risk child the opportunity to attend camp, you are giving them a gift that will impact their life trajectory. They will discover new passions, do hard things, make lifelong friends, become more resilient, and set a path towards a brighter future.

Cook Native American Ministries Foundation

Cook Native American Ministries Foundation (CNAMF) is the result of a legacy rooted in the 1870’s by Reverend Charles H. Cook, who lived and worked amongst the Akimel O’odham in Sacaton, Gila River Indian Community, Arizona. He introduced the study of Christianity in the community and established the Cook College and Theological School. For more than eight decades, American Indian/Alaska Native students studied at the school, where they were encouraged to honor their cultural traditions as well. Cook College and Theological School closed its doors in 2008 and sold the land on which the school stood. Proceeds from the land sale were used to establish Cook Native American Ministries Foundation (CNAMF) in 2013. Today, CNAMF continues Cook’s legacy by serving Native churches and communities throughout the country as they train and prepare leaders of tomorrow.

Today, Cook Native American Ministries Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity that provides grants to small and emerging community-based organizations, churches, tribal communities, and Native urban centers across the country. They support faith-based programs and projects that are rooted in education, healthcare, and leadership development. In recent history, Native communities have fallen subject to major challenges brought on by the effects of intergenerational trauma. There is a demonstrated necessity to provide resources and support to their relatives who are in need, as revealed through Cook Native American Ministries Foundations’ granting program.

Your support will be directed to the oftentimes overlooked, small grassroots churches and organizations. It will safeguard the future for CNAMF’s grant program and allow them to remain dedicated to developing long-lasting programs that positively impact and advance their most precious commodity - grassroots Native communities who deserve to live in a healthy, sustaining, positive, and productive environment. CNAMF is a national organization, however, they do a great amount of their community work throughout the state of Arizona. Your generosity will allow them to continue as active partners, ensuring that Native communities remain strong and vibrant, and that their programs will make a difference in the lives of Native people for years to come.

Children’s Cancer Network (CCN)

Children’s Cancer Network (CCN) is a beacon of hope and support for children and families facing the harrowing journey of pediatric cancer. As potential donors, you have the opportunity to make a profound impact on the lives of these young warriors and their loved ones. At its core, CCN is an organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate assistance to families affected by childhood cancer. It recognizes that battling pediatric cancer extends beyond medical treatments, encompassing emotional, financial, and logistical challenges. CCN strives to be a steadfast ally throughout this difficult journey, offering a holistic approach to support.

One key facet of CCN’s mission is to alleviate the financial burden that often accompanies a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Financial assistance, gas and food cards, basic needs, adopt-a-family programs, and the provision of wigs and beds are offered by CCN. By providing these basics at no cost, CCN assists families to focus on their child’s well-being rather than the overwhelming financial strain.

CCN also prioritizes emotional well-being through a range of psychosocial programs to help children and their families cope with the emotional challenges of cancer. These programs include counseling services, support groups, and activities designed to foster a sense of community and connection among families facing similar struggles. Contributions sustain these vital programs, fostering resilience and emotional strength in the face of adversity.

An immediate and long-term health and wellness focus is important for childhood cancer warriors and their families. CCN optimizes physical, emotional, and social outcomes for parents and children through seasonal day camps, parent’s night out opportunities, and family fun activities in CCN’s Let’s Move Center. In summary, donations to CCN transcend financial assistance; they become a lifeline for families navigating the daunting path of pediatric cancer. Support enables CCN to uphold its commitment to comprehensive care, ensuring that no child or family faces this journey alone. Together, donors can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these young warriors and their families, offering them hope, strength, and the support they need to overcome the challenges of childhood cancer.

Desert Foothills Land Trust

Desert Foothills Land Trust connects people to nature by collaborating with communities and partners to protect and care for the land and wildlife of our fragile Sonoran Desert. Imagine for a moment that there were no giant saguaros, standing as if on sentry on rugged hillsides. There are no brightly blooming prickly pear cactus in springtime. No staccato chatter of cactus wrens. No petroglyphs are etched on centuries-old rock. No creosote perfume after a cleansing monsoon rain. Unimaginable, isn’t it? What will our desert look like in 25, 50, or 100 years? That largely depends on the decisions we make today.

The survival of the Sonoran Desert is not assured; it is saved acre by acre, with reverence and reason, by engaged residents like yourselves. Over the last 30 years, we have conserved nearly 1,100 acres on 29 preserves. These open spaces are protected in perpetuity, ensuring that the land remains forever in its natural beauty. Many of our preserves are open to the public, providing opportunities for recreation and exploration. We offer guided hikes, an educational speaker series focusing on our Sonoran Desert, information booths, and our annual free family fun event, Desert Discovery Day, all to provide opportunities for everyone to find their own personal connection to nature.

Desert Foothills Land Trust receives no dedicated source of funding at the state, county, or local level. They rely on the generous support of private individuals and corporate donors. Your support helps them:

• Identify and protect our community’s most important and valued lands.

• Steward, monitor, and defend the lands they protect in perpetuity.

• Connect people to nature through events, activities, and access to protected lands.

• Collaborate with local and regional partners to connect open spaces.

Please join Desert Foothills Land Trust as they invest in the land they love - and in themselves and those who follow. With your generous support, they will continue to make huge strides for the protection of our unparalleled Sonoran Desert. Their most important job is to make sure everyone is taken care of in each of their 1,124 families. One of their clients’ ten-year-old sons said, “I’m so thankful because you (the food bank) have helped my mom so much with her stress. It’s been so nice because she can spend more time with me and my younger brother rather than worrying about when we will be able to eat the next time.” It’s stories and statements like these that make their work worthwhile.

Located at 16548 E. Laser Dr, Suites #6 and #7, in Fountain Hills, donations are accepted Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Non-perishables, perishables and personal items are welcomed. To donate, please stop by during business hours, or call 480-837-0303.

Grateful Hearts Animal Rescue

Grateful Hearts Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization whose goal is to reduce the overwhelming number of homeless, abused, and vulnerable feline friends in the community. This includes using humane Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) methods to reduce overpopulation, collaborating with local shelters and vets, assisting the community, and saving those abandoned felines on the streets. Established in 2019, Grateful Hearts is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to restoring each cat and kitten under its care to physical and emotional health as they await their loving fur-ever home. They believe in the human-animal connection. That animals have souls and need to connect with their humans as much as humans need their companionship. The name Grateful Hearts comes from the belief that each kitty knows they have been saved and shows their gratitude for the trust they have in us.

Grateful Hearts has partnered with another rescue in the Valley to save kitties from Kuwait. Kuwait has no regulations on animal cruelty laws, and many come from the Friday Market. The Friday Market is filled with suffering, sick, and dying animals crammed into cages with no food, water, or relief from scorching heat. Animals often perish next to others and are left unattended. They have worked diligently to establish relationships with independent rescuers in Kuwait and a veterinary office. The safety of the animals is their priority. Protocols and health certificates are required for travel to the United States.

Their focus in 2024 is to help kitties from Kuwait find refuge from the cruelty overseas and place them in loving homes. They are also focusing on neonatal and under-socialized kitties in county shelters. Grateful Hearts emphasizes establishing relationships between foster and adoptive families. Their fosters dedicate time, energy, and love to these animals, and that reflects in the temperaments of their kitties. They are seeking partnerships to continue their mission of helping kitties locally and internationally.

The Godspeed Project

Embarking on the journey of grief can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to walk it alone. The Godspeed Project offers a supportive sanctuary for grieving children and families, guiding them through the toughest moments of their lives with compassion and understanding. Founded by bereaved mother and certified Grief Educator, Megan MacIntosh, The Godspeed Project is rooted in heartfelt compassion and a deep understanding of the grieving journey. According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model, approximately 1 in 11 children in Arizona will experience the death of a sibling or parent by the age of 18. After seeing a need for private, family centered support in the Valley, that is also financially accessible, Megan took action and created a unique grief support offering that builds on the belief that healthy grieving can be a catalyst for healing, growth, and discovery.

Discover Resilience with M.E.N.D.: Their non-clinical grief support program, M.E.N.D., employs a holistic approach centered on Mindfulness, Equine Companionship, Nature, and Self-Discovery.

Mindfulness: Grievers are encouraged to quiet the mind, slow down, and make space for grief. They guide you to embrace your grief as a natural process of healing and growth, allowing you to find meaning and purpose in your journey.

Healing Through Equine-Assisted Programs: As the first grief support program in Arizona to offer families equine-assisted, somatic-based programs at no charge, they utilize the intuitive nature of the horses and guided Interactions with these gentle creatures to help center the mind, calm the body and process difficult emotions in a non-verbal way.

Find Solace in Nature: Their outdoor space provides a tranquil environment for reflection, reconnection, and rebuilding after loss.

Discover tools to help during grief and beyond: Each individual’s journey is honored here, with the understanding that grief, while challenging, holds the potential for personal transformation and healing. Lost Our Home Pet Rescue

Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in Tempe provides compassionate solutions to permanent and temporary displacement, pet abandonment, and hunger by assisting both pets and their families, especially during times of domestic violence, eviction, homelessness, illness, and more.

Lost Our Home takes a proactive approach to keeping pets out of overcrowded shelters where they are at risk of being euthanized and instead places them with the families that love them. By bridging the gap between human welfare and pet welfare services, Lost Our Home ensures that families facing adversity don’t have to choose between their own well-being and the safety of their beloved pets.

Programs for people and pets include:

90-Day Temporary Care Crisis Program: Provides up to 90 days of complete pet care for families experiencing a crisis, such as eviction, homelessness, hospitalization, domestic violence, and other hardships. They don’t need to make the heartbreaking decision to leave pets behind in dangerous and possibly life-threatening situations so they can access housing, personal safety, or support where a pet is not allowed.

Animal Rescue: Transferring pets from high-risk shelters and pet parents who can no longer care for them. As a no-kill shelter, pet parents can take solace in knowing that their pets will be adopted by a family to love and care for them.

120-Day Temporary Care Domestic Violence Program: In partnership with several domestic violence shelters, Lost Our Home provides support for pets on their campuses.

Pet Food Bank Program: Provides pet food and supplies to pet parents who temporarily cannot afford food for their pets, removing the difficult decision to choose between getting food or medicine for themselves or food for their pets.

In the past 15 years, Lost Our Home has helped over 34,000 pets, fed over 1,000,000 meals through it’s food bank, helped over 20,000 people in crisis, and adopted over 10,000 pets into safe and loving homes.

National Safe Haven Alliance

The National Safe Haven Alliance (NSHA) works to end unsafe and illegal infant abandonment and provide safe options for parents in need.

Safe Haven Laws allow parents to anonymously surrender their unharmed newborns to safe locations. Enacted in response to reports of abandonment and infanticide, these laws provide a safe alternative for struggling parents. Since 1999, more than 4,700 babies have been saved.

NSHA ensures every parent is given the support, resources, and opportunity to create a safe post-birth plan for their baby. Through their tiered communication model, the team creates a safe and open dialogue on Safe Haven, adoption, parenting, and the temporary placement required when facing a crisis. Guided by a holistic model of support, NSHA cares not only for the child but also for the parent.

Through their 24/7 crisis hotline, NSHA connects with parents and providers across the United States, educating them on alternatives to parenting and supporting them through whichever avenue they decide to pursue. NSHA continues to provide this support through various programs, including:

Keeping Mothers and Infants Together Fund and Baby Shower Sprinkle Project: In many cases, parents consider surrendering due to a lack of family support, socioeconomic challenges, inadequate daycare options, or temporary housing challenges. By offering ongoing support to mitigate these barriers, NSHA helps create long-term and sustainable solutions that maintain the parent’s ability to provide care. Small gifts such as diapers, wipes, bottles, baby clothing, gift cards, a diaper bag, and pacifiers may make all the difference in preserving a family.

Baby Love Bags Project: Supports first responders by providing infant care packages to Safe Haven providers. Love Bundle Project: Choosing relinquishment or adoption is not an easy decision. Through this initiative, NSHA supports birth parents following these events.

Safe Haven sites and the age at which a child may be relinquished through Safe Haven vary by state. Please contact the 24/7 Hotline at 1-888-510-BABY (2229) for support. By supporting these programs, individuals are supporting families and newborns during their time of need.

PACC911

Founded in 1999, PACC911 (Phoenix Animal Care Coalition) brings together over 140 animal rescue partners throughout Arizona, most in Maricopa County, by uniting them and offering opportunities to work together for the greater benefit of the animals we serve.

PACC911 assists their coalition partners by lifting the burden of some of the major challenges that rescues face daily, thus maximizing the numbers of animals that can be saved. They provide large-scale outdoor Adopt-A-Thons in a variety of cities and venues, where partners can showcase adoptable animals and meet new adopters.

Their signature program is the Critical Care Program which offers their partners financial assistance to defray the high cost of veterinary care for sick, injured or abused animals. This allows their rescue partners to “intake” thousands of animals who otherwise would have no chance at life. Their partners depend on these funds to save the lives of the most vulnerable animals. In 2023 alone, the program impacted close to 1,750 dogs and cats and since inception in 2012, close to 10,000.

As the population in Arizona continues to grow, the animal population grows in accordance, and it is clear that the existing county shelters are ill equipped to house the numbers of animals who are now residents of our counties and state. Because of this dire situation, PACC911’s rescue partners have stepped up and elevated their role in the community, saving thousands of animals who otherwise would have no safe havens when given up or abandoned.

PACC911 also has a pet food Pantry to help low- income families keep their pets in the home. Chuck Waggin’ Pet Food Pantry serves about 200 plus families keeping pets fed.

By supporting PACC911, you are helping to support 140 rescues in Arizona who collectively saved over 30,000 animals in 2023 when shelters were unable to accommodate them.

Please help us to help them.

Pretty Precise Step Team

Pretty Precise Step Team, headquartered at 4646 South Ash Suite 106 in Tempe, is a nonprofit organization offering minority at-risk youth an opportunity to express themselves through the art of stepping and dance while providing essential life skills. Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic by Lateka Curtis and Cheyenne James, this Valley mother-daughter duo established Pretty Precise Step Team to create a supportive community for young girls, emphasizing mentorship, academic and mental health support, and fostering a safe environment of sisterhood.

“Three years ago, our goal was to connect with minority at-risk youth and allow them to express themselves through the power of dance, but this has grown bigger than we ever imagined,” said Curtis. “We have tripled in size and are on a path to keep growing exponentially. We knew there was a need for an organization that provided a community to these girls, with things like mentorship, academic and mental health support, and a safe environment of sisterhood.”

Pretty Precise Step Team’s impact extends beyond its studio walls, with numerous opportunities for support and engagement. Supporters can volunteer at State Farm Stadium for sporting events and concerts throughout the year, or make monetary donations through the organization’s website. Additionally, the Pretty Precise Step Team welcomes in-kind donations such as paint, drywall, toiletries, cleaning supplies, mirrors, wall decor, refrigerators, and speakers, which directly contribute to its operations and programs.

Currently comprising 32 girls, the Pretty Precise Step Team aims to double its size, aspiring to have approximately 75 girls by the end of the year. With a commitment to empowerment and growth, they continue to expand their reach, offering a sisterhood and safe environment to keep youth off the streets and find community. The team’s accomplishments have garnered national recognition, including features on Good Morning America and participation in prestigious events such as the Fiesta Bowl program and the Super Bowl Extravaganza in 2023. Additionally, they’ve showcased their talent and dedication through participation in national dance and step competitions across the country.

Puppy Luv Animal Rescue

Puppy Luv Animal Rescue embarked on its journey in 2017. It all began when owner Gwen and her husband began to foster a few dogs. They organized mini-adoption events at Tractor Supply in Cave Creek to help those dogs get adopted. After they were adopted, they took in more and kept perpetuating the cycle until establishing a permanent base in Cave Creek in 2018. From there, they relocated to a more favorable location in North Phoenix in 2022 and expanded further by adding a second location in Mesa in 2023.

Last year alone, Puppy Luv Animal Rescue, a no-kill rescue, saved over 1,200 dogs, and in 2020 they helped a whopping 3,000 dogs. They do this by rescuing dogs from kill shelters, placing them with fosters, and eventually adopting them out to loving families.

Puppy Luv has received abundant support from the foster community, volunteers, community partners, and donations, enabling significant growth. The majority of the available dogs reside in private foster homes and are adopted through a unique ‘foster-to-adopt’ experience. This approach ensures a personalised experience for potential adopters and their families, providing insights into the dog’s behavior and personality within a home environment. Foster parents, being most familiar with the animals, offer valuable information to facilitate the best possible match between the pet and its prospective forever home.

Volunteers are always needed to help with everything from fostering, to simply walking dogs when you have time to spare. Doing some spring cleaning? Used towels, blankets and sheets are always in demand. Staples such as garbage bags, bleach, and plastic baggies also go a long way.

Don’t have extra time to volunteer, but still want to help? Donating could be right for you. You can find the donation page on their website (and the QR code to the left), as well as a link to their Amazon store. Another way to show your support is by stopping by the Puppy Luv Flea Market Thrift Store. Located at 7171 E. Cave Creek Rd. in Cave Creek, the market is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saving One Life Animal Rescue and Sanctuary

Saving One Life Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is a volunteer run organization that aims to protect and provide for at-risk companion animals through adoption programs, colony management, and community outreach initiatives. Over the past 14 years we have helped nearly 9,000 animals find loving homes and supported thousands more.

Established in 2009, Saving One Life is a volunteer-run, foster-based, never-kill animal rescue serving canines and felines in need throughout Arizona and Southern California. As a never-kill rescue, we provide all veterinary intervention needed for the animals in our care. We save cats and dogs of all types that are either abandoned or at-risk for euthanasia. We welcome animals from local shelters throughout Arizona and Southern California, owner surrenders, and through TNR (trap, neuter and rescue). Every one of our adoptable animals is placed in a loving foster home. All adoptable animals are thoroughly vetted before being placed for adoption. All feral cats are trapped, neutered, and returned to their home colony. We ensure each colony has a caregiver to provide food. Trapped cats that require additional services are given medical care at the time of spay or neuter.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Saving One Life Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. We literally would not exist without the hard work and loving dedication of our Foster and Adoption Center Volunteers. We’re different from many other animal rescue organizations because we are completely foster based. This means that we spend the donations we receive directly helping the animals rather than paying rent on a shelter building. We have seven PetSmart adoption centers in Arizona. We are always in need of volunteers who can donate one to two hours every week or every month. Through donations and volunteers, we help companion animals find loving homes.

This is done by creating a safe and nurturing community where survivors can connect and find supportive programs and services to overcome isolation and thrive.

Tempe Community Council (TCC)

Tempe Community Council (TCC) is a community-based nonprofit established in 1972 with a history of encouraging resident interaction and commitment to human services in Tempe. They bring community together, provide support to community members in need, plan for present and future needs, and build a lasting foundation for future generations. They are committed to building a community that cares for one another, appreciates diversity in its people and ideas, fosters and respects resident input, works cooperatively with stakeholders, and is efficient and effective with resources. Their mission is to connect those in need with those who care. This is achieved by convening the community, conducting research, determining priorities, implementing effective programs, and exemplifying prudent stewardship of resources.

TCC holds an annual awards ceremony that recognizes humanitarian efforts and conducts comprehensive research into the needs of the community every four years. This report is used to track changing demographics, assess key problems and strengths, and direct resources appropriately. The vision is to nurture Tempe’s sense of community, where children, seniors, families, and individuals care for one another. TCC supports creating change in the community by empowering volunteers to engage and advocate for Tempe’s greatest human services needs. Their youth development programs include high school dropout prevention by providing basic needs including free clothing, school supplies, and alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs. Positive self-image contributes to academic success. Data shows that before a student can remember, understand, and apply what they are learning, their physiological needs, such as shelter, food, and clothing, must be met, and they must feel safe, loved, and secure. It is also difficult to thrive without a stable family life.

Their parenting education program supports parents and caregivers and promotes positivity in their teenage children, which will, in turn, contribute to the prevention of more severe adolescent health-risk behavior and delinquent or antisocial behavior. Additionally, free tax return preparation services encourage financial stability for low- and moderate-income individuals and families. TCC ensures that anyone accessing its program services can be connected to services provided by community partners. Caring and connection to help improve lives are what they do.

Treasures 4 Teachers

Treasures 4 Teachers has been an educational resource hub in Tempe, Arizona, since 2003. Its mission is to provide educational supplies to teachers and students from the community’s reusable resources. Through a resource store in Tempe and West Phoenix, along with its mobile program T4T on Wheels, the organization serves 8,000 teachers and 250,000 students annually. Arizona ranks last for per-student spending in the nation, disproportionately burdening teachers and placing students, especially those from low-income households, at a very real learning disadvantage. More than 90% of the teachers T4T has worked with teach low-income students and would spend up to $1,200 of their own money on supplies.

The programs create impactful change while helping teachers and students experiencing these challenges:

• Alleviate the financial burden teachers face when outfitting their classrooms and providing supplies and other necessary items for their students.

• Improve the learning environment for Arizona students whose districts cannot provide them with sufficient tools to succeed in the classroom.

• Promote reuse and recycling by offering creative ideas for using recycled materials to demonstrate educational concepts, as well as pre-made educational kits using recycled items.

Helping Teachers: Ninty-six percent of T4T’s teacher members feel an increased sense of professional stability and instructional opportunity because of access to the teacher resource center. “I couldn’t be the teacher I am today without Treasures 4 Teachers. They helped me become a better teacher and supplied my classroom for years with amazing things.” Stephanie, a 4th-grade teacher.

Helping Students: Eighty-seven percent of teachers agree that students who receive supplies feel more prepared, confident, and engaged in learning as a result. “I can’t say enough about what T4T provides for me and my students. My class thrives because I am always finding inspiration from T4T.” Pamela, kindergarten teacher.

Teacher Memberships: Anyone who works closely with students can have access to a wide selection of materials, resources, and training that helps teachers and students thrive. Refer an educator to the organization today! Education impacts the entire community. Support the next generation by giving financially or through donated school supplies and volunteer opportunities. Also, please thank a teacher for being a teacher!

SMALL HERO, BIG HEART

Carter’s toy drive lights up Phoenix Children’s hosPital.

96 • EG PUBLISHING • GOOD DEEDS GUIDE 2023-2024 14 | OCTOBER 2023 | EPIC KIDS EPIC KIDS AZ.COM
epic kids giving back

In North Phoenix, a young boy named Carter Cunnius is turning his past challenges into a mission of joy for other kids. This 8-year-old, with twinkling eyes and an unstoppable spirit, is the mastermind behind a heartwarming toy drive that is making waves in the community and brightening the days of children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Carter's journey began in a way none of us would want. When he was only 4 years old, his doctors shared the news that he had a type of cancer known as leukemia. His days became filled with hospital visits, treatments, and many moments that required extraordinary bravery. After a challenging battle of two and a half years, Carter triumphantly emerged, being declared cancer-free one year ago. However, his experience in the hospital wasn’t forgotten. During one particularly tough week, when an infection kept him bedridden, Carter experienced the boredom and sadness that can come with long hospital stays. A small box of LEGOs, which became a source of creativity and escape, sparked an idea in his thoughtful mind.

“My mom and I built it and took it apart so many times. I was so sad, and my mom kept making up games for us to play.  I still had a lot of unopened gifts at home and told my mom that I wanted to donate them so no kid would feel the way I did during that week,” says Carter. That memory led to the birth of Carter’s toy drive, which kicked off in September 2020. With an objective to ensure no child felt the loneliness and boredom he once did, Carter, along with the support of his community, started collecting toys. His endeavor began to fill trucks and cars with toys destined for children in the hospital.

Carter, now a third grader at Deer Valley Unified School District’s (DVUSD) Norterra Canyon School, is inspiring not just adults, but his class-

mates too. Together, they've been gathering toys by the hundreds, establishing a tower that symbolizes hope, kindness, and youthful solidarity. This year marks the third of Carter’s initiative, and it’s not just about collecting toys, but also about remembering and honoring friends made along the way. Last year’s drive paid tribute to a young friend, Junior, who sadly lost his fight with cancer.

In Carter’s words, the best part about organizing the toy drive each year is “knowing kids will feel loved and it will take their mind off of what they’re going through.” And his top pick for a universal toy? LEGOs, as he believes “everyone loves LEGOs!”

His mom, Marie Cunnius, stands proudly by his side, her perspective on life profoundly altered by their journey. She emphasizes the importance of valuing what truly matters in life and encourages others to always accept help when it is genuinely offered. Marie believes that no family should navigate the challenging journey of childhood cancer alone.

Readers, if Carter's story inspires you, there's a way for you to be part of this inspiring initiative! Carter’s cause will be back in action next September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, inviting everyone to participate through Norterra Canyon School or DVUSD.

Young Carter, despite his experiences, turned pain into purpose and is a living testament to how acts of kindness, big or small, can radiate through a community, lifting spirits and making a real difference. His story reminds us all that no matter how tough the journey, there's always a way to bring a little sunshine into the lives of others.

Remember, even the smallest hands can move mountains and the youngest hearts can show immense kindness. Kudos to Carter and every young person out there making a difference, one small act of kindness at a time.

At 4 years old, Carter was diAgnosed with a canCer known as leukemiA.

CHARITABLE GIVING WITH YOUR ESTATE PLAN

If you wish to leave some of your estate to charitable institutions, then a gift from your retirement accounts can have tremendous advantages. There are many ways to benefit your favorite charity both now and at your death. If these charitable gifts are done properly, you can receive tax advantages now, and save your heirs taxes later.

Distributing appreciated assets with a low basis.

Did you buy stock or other assets at a low price? Do you own stock that has increased in value with no way to trace what your original purchase price? Giving stock and other highly appreciated assets with a low basis can be a great way to support your favorite charity. As the donor, you can claim the charitable deduction for the value of the gifted assets. The charity, meanwhile, can accept the gift and cash it out without paying taxes. This gift benefits your favorite charity and avoids capital gains taxes on the appreciated assets.

Gifting your required minimum distributions from your IRA. Another option to support your favorite charity is a gift during your lifetime by making a Qualified Charitable Distribution, also known as a charitable IRA Rollover. Individuals who are age 70.5 or older can direct their annual required minimum distributions (up to $100,000) from an IRA to a charity tax-free. However, the payment must be made directly to the charity to qualify for this tax-free distribution. While the individual distributing this gift from an IRA doesn’t receive an income tax charitable deduction, they also don’t have to recognize the distribution as taxable income. If you are already making gifts to a charity each year, this can be a way to benefit your charity and reduce your taxes at the same time. Just remember you cannot take the distribution into your bank account first! The gift must go straight to the charity from your IRA. The advice of a CPA will ensure you do this properly.

Making your charity the beneficiary of your traditional 401(k) or IRA. Your contributions to your traditional 401(k) or IRA are pre-tax money. You, or an individual inheriting the IRA from you, will pay taxes when they withdraw

the funds. If you have a beneficiary on your retirement accounts who is 10 years younger than you, they will have to withdraw all those funds within 10 years of your passing. If giving to charities is part of your plan, then making the charity the beneficiary may be the better plan, tax-wise. Naming a charity as a beneficiary means they will pay no taxes on the distribution of that traditional retirement account. Be careful when you have both individual beneficiaries and charities on the same IRA as there can be unintended tax consequences when you do so. Consult with an attorney or CPA to avoid any issues.

The Donor-Advised Fund

Donor-Advised Funds offer a simple way for you to benefit a variety of charities during your life and beyond. A donoradvised fund can be established with, for instance, a community foundation. In our state, the Arizona Community Foundation is one choice for a donoradvised fund. The donor can give cash or securities to the fund. He or she receives an income tax charitable deduction for the year of the donation. The donor

designates the charities that they want to receive the benefit of their donation – or they can designate the types of charities rather than specific charities. A donor-advised fund can be used for a gift from your estate after your death as well.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust allows the donor to give assets to an irrevocable trust that then provides income for one or more individual beneficiaries (even you and a spouse), and at the end of a specific time, or on the death of the beneficiaries, the remainder of the assets are given to charity. This type of trust can be another method to gift highly appreciated assets. The trust will permit the donor to claim an immediate charitable deduction for the value of the assets that will ultimately pass to the charity. The donation also avoids the capital gains taxes on any appreciated assets.
