EGLSF Annual General Assembly Get-togethers European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF), is as a Non-Governmental organisation governed by the highest body, the Assembly, like most organisations. The Assemblies are a great get-together event, maximised for networking and information exchange, which was this year enhanced by the conference.

Artemis Frankfurt and Frankfurter Volleyball Verein (FVV) hosted this year’s Annual General Assembly of the European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF AGA 2011) between March 4 and 6 in Frankfurt, Germany. As a part of the AGA, EGLSF Members Best Practice event was organised on Friday, highly appreciated by the members. The Assembly officially opened with the civic reception at the historic Villa Bonn; followed by the Assembly programme during all day Saturday and Sunday morning. Representatives and delegates enjoyed the programme prepared for them by the hosts, which also included entertainment (party) events and sightseeing tours. On behalf of the EGLSF Board members and on behalf of all participants and guests of the Assembly, we are expressing

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” Cynthia Ozick, American writer

our thanks to FVV and Artemis for their hospitality, organisation and all their efforts: Vielen Danke!

Members’ Best Practice Conference EGLSF member club representatives were able to participate in a 1-day event in which several interesting subjects were discussed. This included the topics of Football vs. Homophobia, Women’s participation and inclusion promotion at sports organisations, Professional Fundraising for LGBT Sports Clubs, Best Practice for EuroGames, Frankfurt’s Outreach Eastern Europe, Discussing Sex and Sexuality in the sports arena Conference, Project Warsaw, Cultural Perspectives on LGBTIQ Sports, Youth Games Manchester, LGBT Ranking System for Badminton, Integration & Football. The presentations and outcomes of the conference are being prepared and will be published shortly.

EuroGames Organisers of the 13th EuroGames which are taking place this summer between July 20 and 24 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, presented the Games and invited everyone to participate. Registration is possible at http:// www.eurogames2011.eu where also more information about the upcoming EuroGames is available. A lot of discussion and focus was given to the 14th EuroGames which are planned to take place in the summer of 2012 in Budapest, Hungary. There were several unresolved issues and open questions, which are jeopardizing the successful celebration of EuroGames in 2012. A few individuals and organisations decided to actively step in and help with the organisation, and the assembly decided to give the organisers additional time to resolve open issues. A report and recommendations about the organisation of EuroGames 2012 will be given by the board by the end of May 2011.

Elections The mandate of four board members finished this March. The current EGLSF male co-president, Pepe García Vázquez (ESP/BEL) decided not to run again, and Marie Kampmann Petersen (DEN) stepped down due to her studies abroad. The newly elected board members for another 2-year mandate: the male copresident is the former EGLSF general secretary Lou Manders (NED) & the new general secretary is Jan Frölich (GER). Andrej Pišl (SLO) and Gabriella Körmendi (HUN) were re-elected as board members at large. Jon Landa (ESP/ITA) has been elected as board member for one year (on Marie’s position).

AGA 2012 The AGA confirmed the candidature of qSport to host the Annual General Assembly in Split, Croatia in 2012. The Croatian hosts are already looking forward to welcoming EGLSF delegates on the Mediterranean coast next March.

EGLSF Info Global LGBT sports organisations and events During EGLSF AGA, Federation of Gay Games board members gave a brief update on Gay Games IX ClevelandAkron 2014, and the representatives of GLISA and the organisers presented the 3rd World Outgames Antwerp 2013.

A joint communications message on the work of the Joint Working Group for the 2018 initiative One World Event was drafted by GLISA and FGG with the following points: - Both our organizations agree that a single quadrennial event is desired by the participants of our events and the leadership of many or our partner organisations. - The 1QE working group wishes to unite the LGBT communities globally. - One goal is to bring the best practices and legacy from both organisations to the 2018 event.

Please send all communication requests to 1qeworkinggroup@googlegroups.com

EuroGames 2012 Control Committee Following the AGA, EGLSF Board established a Control Committee as outlined in the motion voted on by the General Assembly. We received an agreement to participate in the Control Committee both from FRIGO and ATLASZ. EGLSF Board produced a Control Committee project outline, which identified the scope of the Control Committee and action to be undertaken by end of May 2011 by all parties; FRIGO, the Control Committee, and EGLSF Board.

The committee visited Budapest twice already (March 26-27 and April 22-24), and met with the representatives of FRIGO, Atlasz, EGLSF board members and others involved in the preparation for the organisation of EuroGames 2012. We would like to thank everyone involved for their work and contributions, especially to Klaus Heusslein, member of the Control Committee directly assigned by the AGA. Inputs from all involved parties and the Control Committee will be taken into account at the next EGLSF Board meeting in Budapest during the last weekend of May where the final decision on the licence and the organisers will be made.

Football for Equality Seminar The seminar, held between April 8 and 10 in Bratislava, Slovakia, addressed mainly Roma Exclusion and Homophobia in sport, with emphasis on football in Central and Eastern Europe. The event was attended by representatives of anti-discrimination NGOs, ethnic minority and migrant organisations, LGBT sport groups, football governing bodies and fan organisations Europe. EGLSF was represented by its board members Andrej Pisl and Gabriella Koermendi. As part of their attendance, Mrs Koermendi gave a welcome speech to the participants, while Mr Pisl led the workshop on challenging homophobia in Central and Eastern Europe. The workshops were followed by plenary sessions on the anti-discrimination activities. The project “Football for Equality– Challenging racist and homophobic stereotypes in and through football” is a European initiative carried out by various partner organisations linked to the FARE network together with the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF). The project started in autumn 2009

EGLSF Board meetings EGLSF Board met in Frankfurt on March 3, before this year’s AGA. The two main topics were the Assembly, and the upcoming EuroGames - Rotterdam 2011 and Budapest 2012. After the AGA, the board met on their first Skype conference on April 4 to discuss the topics of EuroGames, Football for Equality program, EGLSF strategy and other current issues. The board will meet next time in Budapest, Hungary May 27-29, 2011.

Members’ Corner

On March 19th 2011 a Polish group called Multiaction organized a sport event for the LGBT Volley and Basketball teams. This is their experience: We were honoured to host woman’s basketball team from Manchester - Slam Dunkin’ Divas and men’s volleyball team from Warsaw - Volup. Our guests were playing against local teams DNDK and Hurragany. It was an amazing and exiting experience. For the first time we were able to organize an LGBT sport event open to the public. Everything has started on Friday the 18th when right after our guests arrived we had a dinner and a small sip of Polish beer in one of the local restaurants. The games started on Saturday. The girls were playing first. After a great game which was won by DNDK we could watch how the boys from Volup were stronger over Hurragany. During and after the games we had many lovely moments full of joy and satisfaction that were caught on

photos :) After small brake we all meet again in Orthopedia - night club in center of Wroclaw. About the party the only think we can say is that what happened in Wroclaw stays in Wroclaw. Although it was hard Sunday morning, we all made it to have a lunch together and watch some photos from the day before. What happened in Wroclaw in those three days is a big step forward to improve the LGBT sport awareness. Multiaction is a young organization trying to make a difference. Our passion for sport and a strong believe in what we do gives us strength to achieve things that at the beginning seemed to be way out of reach. Every single person that was a part of this event had mega positive impact. We would like to thank you all for your support... See you soon in Wroclaw! And this is the experience of the Slam Dunkin’ Divas: Slam Dunkin Divas were on tour again this month following a great invitation from Polish basketball team DNDK. We travelled to Wroclaw to be part of a festival of action against discrimination. “The House of Boys and Girls” weekend featured a series of events by Polish sports organisation “Multi-action”.

Page 5

EGLSF Newsletter: News & Information from European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation

DNDK hosted the basketball match at a fabulous facility in central Wroclaw. Watched by almost 100 spectators, the home team beat the 9-strong Divas squad in a match that ended up at 45 – 20. Then the Volup volleyball guys played Wroclaw’s Hurricanes in an exciting and gruelling match. Fortunately we all still had the strength to visit a fabulous LGBT club and dance away the night until the very early hours of Sunday morning. We had a fantastic time in Wroclaw! It’s such a beautiful city with amazing 13th century architecture still surviving today in the centre. We were looked after so well by everyone, and special thanks go to Dudi and Lukasz for giving up their homes to us for the weekend! Dorota and the DNDK team were great sports and we really hope to see them both in European tournaments and at our own Pride Games tournament in June. The message from Slam Dunkin Divas to EGLSF members? Wroclaw Wrocks! More information: www.facebook.com/ group.php?gid=116264178412392.

Samarucs

Samarucs is a multi-disciplinary sports club, primarily but not exclusively, for LGTB people. It was founded 8 years ago and continues to be an organisation run by volunteers and members. The mission statement of Samarucs is “to combat the discrimination and marginalization of LGTB people in sport and encourage positive images and participation in sport of LGTB people” Samarucs is unique in the region of the Valencian community and is centrally based in the regional capital of Valencia. The club currently has over 100 members (but many additional ‘friends’ and helpers) As well as regional sporting activities held by the club, the

club also has links with other national and international LGTB sporting organizations and its members also actively compete in European level tournaments. From 3rd to the 5th June 2011, Samarucs once again has the privilege of organizing the 4th Jocs Taronja - a bi-annual, European, and only LGBT sporting event in Valencia. The games embody the mission statement above, and aim to bring LGBT people from all over Europe together to compete, foster friendships and contacts and celebrate. In addition, every edition of the games highlights a particular theme relevant to LGTB people (the last edition in 2009 for example, was dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots taking place in 1969). The 2011 games will remember and mark the 30th anniversary of the first AIDS diagnosis (on 5th June, 1981). Over 250 participants are expected, each edition having greater numbers, this also being reflected in the high level of support and interest from the local community and businesses. Registration for the event is now open and the club welcomes individual or team participants. For further details, please see www.samarucs.org.

News Section Pride Sports Launches Award to back Government Charter 15 March 2011 Following the launch of the Government’s Charter for Action on Tackling Homophobia and Transphobia in Sport http://www.facebook.com/lgbtsportcharter yesterday, LGBT Sports Equity Organisation, Pride Sports, launched a new award to acknowledge the work of sports organisations making progress in this area. The new award is launched as part of the Pride Games Community Sports Awards, which each year celebrate the achievements of LGBT sports groups in the UK. Lou Englefield, one of Pride Sports’ Founding Directors explains: “We wanted to support the Charter in a tangible way and to give National

Governing Bodies of Sport and other sports organisations something to aim for over the next twelve months. The Award will celebrate the achievements of sports bodies which sign up to the Government’s Charter and the steps they take to make sport a safer, more positive place for LGBT people over the next twelve months.” The award will be given annually and applications for this year’s award will open in October 2011. The winner will be announced at the Pride Games Dinner in February 2012, LGBT History Month here in the UK. Judges on the independent panel will include Sarah Williams, Equality & Diversity Manager at the Rugby Football League (RFL), the National Governing Body at the forefront of the national campaign against homophobia and transphobia in sport, who comments: “I’m thrilled to be part of the judging panel for this award. At Rugby League we are delighted to support any initiative within any sport, from grass roots to the professional game which challenges homophobia and transphobia” The announcement comes after the hugely successful rugby league match on Sunday between Sheffield Eagles RLFC and Widnes Vikings RLFC, during which Sheffield Eagles players wore a kit carrying an anti-homophobia message sponsored by Pride Sports and LGBT History Month. http://www.pridesports.org

Football accepts gayrights charter 15 March 2011 Efforts to wipe out homophobia in sport have received a significant boost as the country’s major sports leagues put their weight behind a government campaign. The organising bodies for football, tennis, cricket, rugby league, rugby union

and the Olympics have all signed the government’s charter for action. The charter aims to create a welcoming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in sport. Activists welcomed the move as a sign that sport - often considered the last bastion of homophobia in the UK - was pressured to modernise in line with other industries. The document has four key points: everyone should be able to participate, sport is about fairness, equality, respect and dignity, a commitment to making these values a reality for LGBT people, and a pledge to challenge unacceptable behaviour. Alex Horne, general secretary of the Football Association (FA), said the sport was working to combat all forms of discrimination. “The FA and its stakeholders have worked hard over the years in providing football for all and ensuring that football stadia are open to everyone and are both family and LGBT friendly,” he said. “We’ve seen real progress over the last 20 years when it comes to tackling racism and that’s something football should be proud of. “We remain committed to our longterm goal of removing all forms of discrimination, such as homophobia, out of the game.” England’s top four football divisions are notorious for not having any openly gay players. Other sports are only moderately better-represented. England cricketer Steven Davies recently announced he is gay, while Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas came out two years ago. Equalities minister Lynne Featherstone said the charter was an important step towards a sporting environment free from discrimination. “Sport should be about what you can do, not who you are,” Ms Featherstone said. “But too many lesbian, gay, bisexual

and transgender people feel that the sports field is not somewhere they can be themselves, and that prejudice and discrimination will mean their sexuality is always talked about more than their ability with a ball, bat or racket. “Homophobia and transphobia has no place in sport and I’m delighted that so many sporting bodies are backing our campaign to stamp it out at all levels, from local parks to Olympic stadiums.” http://www.politics.co.uk/news/culturemedia-and-sport/football-accepts-gayrights-charter-$21387742.htm

Anton Hysén encourages coming out 04 April 2011 After Anton Hysén, 20-year old football player from Sweden came out earlier last month, a lot of media attention has been given to him and raised the topic of (lack of) out athletes in sport, especially football. “I am a footballer. And I am gay. If I perform as a footballer, then I do not think it matters if I like girls or boys,” he said. He also acknowledges the possibility that this could affect his career, but pointed out that also other players have to deal with other discriminations, like racism. In his interview with The Guardian, he says “Anyone afraid of coming out should give me a call.” http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/ mar/29/anton-hysen-afraid-coming-out

Euro Games 2011 Registration on track Perhaps due to the beautiful weather in the past few days one realizes that the EuroGames are closer than ever. Only a few months and they’re here (July 20-24)! But there can be no EuroGames without participants! Thus the question: How’s it going with your registration? The goal of the organization is to attract some 6,000 athletes to Rotterdam. In March, we had over 2,300 registered participants. So, the registration is on track. In the past, registration for the EuroGames around this time was only at 25 percent, currently we are at 30 percent. We have about 1,400 men and 900 women who have registered. This is a nice mix, since we usually have fewer women than men who participate in the EuroGames. This is something we would like to see change in Rotterdam! Additionally, we have also set a goal for the different nationalities represented by the competitors. The number of registered competitors from South and Eastern Europe is a bit disappointing. Oddly enough, there are not really a lot of registered participants from neighbouring Belgium. The ambassadors are doing their best to change this. We are on schedule, but the maximum number of participants is still a long way away. The registrations for soccer, tennis, badminton and water polo are great. Judo, wrestling, jeu de boules, bridge and chess are far behind. The EuroGames

promotion team is doing its best to recruit more competitors. Saskia Prosch, explains later in this newsletter, how you can become a member of the promotion team. And for those of you who have still not registered: Show Your Colour!

Recognition for Samesex Dance couple Caroline Privou and Petra Zimmermann were recently elected sports figures of the year 2011 for Köln, German. Never before in the world has a same-sex dance couple won the title at a regular sporting event. This summer during the EuroGames, the first official European Championship Same-Sex Dance contest will take place under the auspices of the European Same-Sex Dance Association (ESSDA). Some 400 plus same-sex dance pairs, from around the world will dance in the various categories in the Latin-American, Standard and Show Dance disciplines.

Rotterdam Rotterdam is an interesting city with a rich history. There are lots of things to experience and activities to do on the water and around. So you won’t be bored during your stay in Rotterdam if you’re done competing in one of the sports events.

For centuries, Rotterdam has had a connection with water. Because of the city’s orientation along the River Maas, Rotterdam has a lot of inner harbours, a lively atmosphere with lots of waterrelated excitement. Besides all of this, Rotterdam is of course also known for its international port. The same port in which the Holland-America Line (HAL) was seated in the second half of the 19th century, with its headquarters at the ‘Wilhelminakade’. From this site lots of immigrants left for America with many hopes and excitements. This building is now a famous hotel (Hotel ‘New York’). Hotel New York still has many features which are reminiscent of this period. Every space in the building has a history. Curious for a real steam ship experience? Be sure to visit the SS Rotterdam. This ‘Grand Old Lady’, as it is sometimes called, is back in Rotterdam after an absence of many years. During the day you can look around on this magnificent ship, and at night it is possible to stay in one of the comfortable cabins. Along with the international port there is also a great history of trading in Rotterdam. In the so-called ‘Entrepothaven’ there are a lot of features reminiscent of these ‘trading times’.
