Have you heard of Holy Thursday? Holy Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus established the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the
religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper — during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood — is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event.

Join us for worship at Rincon UMC Rincon United Methodist Church is a vibrant, traditional congregation that seeks to be a witness to the love of Jesus Christ in this community. We have committed ourselves to providing opportunities for people of all ages and stages of life to grow in their faith. Our worship service is traditional and creative as we seek to help people experience God in new, fresh ways. We are also known for our excellent music in worship, under the direction of Mr. Ralph Long. We host a singing group “the Journeymen of Praise,” which is widely known in the area and is frequently invited to perform at churches and events. Rincon UMC has been a place people come to experience God in this community for a long time. We trace our history all the way back to 1732, when St. Matthew Parish was created as an English Crown holding on land originally granted to Lord Effingham. In 1751, the Goshen Lutheran Church was established; and in 1820, Goshen Lutheran became Goshen Methodist. In 1894, a group of men from Goshen Methodist met under a large oak tree near where our church now stands, and formed the Rincon Methodist Episcopal Church — which later became the present-day Rincon United Methodist Church. Today, Rincon UMC is proud to be a host church for Family Promise of Effingham and
shares the nonprofit’s commitment to helping families and children in need. We also have a strong tradition of supporting Habitat for Humanity. Our quilting ministry, “the Piece Makers,” provides quilts, blankets and other sewn items in support of wounded veterans, several area hospice organizations and Project Linus, as well as providing prayer shawls to bring comfort to members and friends near and far. Three events throughout the year are well attended by our members as well as our extended community family. The Easter Egg Hunt at Cowart’s Methodist Retreat is a wonderful event for the whole family. Vacation Bible School is for children between the ages of 2 and 18. On the first Saturday in December, our annual Breakfast with Santa is always a hit. Rincon UMC has been the proud home and charter sponsor of Cub Scout pack and Boy Scout Troop 665 for more than 30 years. We also offer opportunities for Girl Scouts, youth, children, women and men to become more engaged in their faith in Christ. New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear
new clothes during Easter services.
Palm fronds
Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass.

Tips for cooking holiday hams Cooking ham is relatively easy when you first know what type of ham you have. Generally, hams are sold fully cooked, partially cooked or uncooked. Hams can be cooked in a number of ways, from boiling to baking to grilling ham steaks. You can experiment with the different cooking ways to determine a taste you prefer, but remember: Hams should be cooked until the internal temperature reads 160 F. There are also a number of seasoning methods that can make a sweet or savory ham. Honey-glazed ham is quite popular. Many home chefs like to baste hams with pineapple or orange juice for a citrus flavor. You can also attach pineapple rings with whole cloves for a decorative and tasty presentation. Because of the relative size of hams,
you are likely to have some left over. Chunks of ham can be added to salads and stews. Save the ham bone to add flavor to soups. Sliced ham makes great sandwiches or can be added to breakfast egg dishes. The possibilities are endless.

Easter Holy Week and the Easter celebrations contain the entire gospel of salvation. The First Service of Easter, whether celebrated Easter Eve as the vigil or on Easter in the early morning, is both the source and the summit of the entire Christian Year. Here we are overwhelmed by God’s victory and by the vastness of the divine mercy and love. We proclaim Christ, crucified, dead, and buried, risen, and exalted as the head of the church ----------- the Savior of humanity and the Lord of all things. The whole faith of the church now comes into focus in the continuing life of union with Christ. That faith lives in expectant hope of the kingdom in its fullness. Whatever life we have is a reflection of the life of God manifest in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Make Easter eggs last Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions, including the coloring of Easter eggs. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with food-grade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to stay fresh and edible.
It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as they are guaranteed not to spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hard-boiled eggs only if this task can be completed within two hours. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

‘Disciples are a distinctive group within the church’ Guyton Christian Church is affiliated with The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We grew from a movement begun during the Great Awakening of the early 19th century on the American frontier. This Restoration Movement sought to recreate the unity and simplicity of the early Christian Church as evidenced by the New Testament. In that attempt our founders claimed the command of Jesus that Jesus’ followers be one. We emphasize the universal name “Christian” while acknowledging our distinctive identity as “Disciples.” We practice weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper — open to all believers — baptism by immersion upon profession of faith, and the priesthood of all believers, both men and women. The Guyton congregation traces its roots back to about 1819 when a Salzburger, Christian Herman Dasher, became involved in the Restoration Movement and began a fellowship of like-minded friends and neighbors at Ebenezer. Celebrate history at Jerusalem Lutheran Church Come help us live into the future Jerusalem Lutheran Church (est. 1733) is the oldest continuous worshiping Lutheran Church in the U.S. We are located along the Savannah River outside Rincon at 2966 Ebenezer Road. Lutheran history dates back to the 16th century in Germany, when Martin Luther challenged teachings of the Roman Church and was forced to leave and form the first protestant denomination. Lutherans have always stressed the importance of the grace of God — God’s love and mercy offered to all people. God calls us to live in relationships — not only with God, but also with each other: relationships of trust, accountability and, when we fall short, forgiveness too. If you are looking for a church home, we invite you to gather with us for worship. We sing a mixture of old hymns and new songs. We celebrate Communion weekly. We use traditional liturgy and focus on God’s Word, written and proclaimed. Pastor Steve Plonk joined our church community in September of
2015. He is leading us as we discuss and discern our future ministry in this time and place. Be ‘the church’ at Bethel Lutheran At Bethel Lutheran Church in Springfield, we believe a few important things about you and “church.” We believe that many people don’t come to church because they associate it with judgmental and critical folks who like to use the Bible as a weapon. We understand that. We focus on our own mirror, calling everyone in the church to reflect the living Christ. Many people feel beat up by life. We promise to let you re-establish your relationship with God without having to worry that anyone is judging or criticizing you. We believe that many people don’t go to church because they feel they are not worthy. You are worthy. We believe God created you, and that the work of His Son enables you to stand before Him. every day to show you in our words and actions that you are valuable and loved by the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer of our universe. We will never, ever make you feel that you’re not worthy to be among our family, because you are. There is nothing — and I mean nothing — you could have done that the blood of God, which dripped from the cross, cannot cover. Trust me, the most imperfect person in the church is the guy behind the pulpit. We believe that many people avoid church because they feel church services have become stale and meaningless. We understand that too. Whiel we do have a traditional service, you will certainly find that—between our varied educational programs for all ages and the many opportunities we offer for people to connect to God both in and out of the service— you can experience a sense of peace again within our doors through God’s Word.
We believe that many people stay home Sunday mornings because they do not see their church affecting the lives of others. At Bethel, we give every month to five different charitable organizations. We do that, not because we are trying to earn our worth as Christians or impress anyone, but rather because Jesus calls us to be His hands in our community. We do not believe church is a show. We take our calling seriously, and we never want Bethel to become a boring, dull church where people “go to church” instead of “existing as a church.” We believe many people visit Saint Mattress Sunday mornings because they believe they can be “good Christians” without church. They see a church as a bunch of old doctrine and a social club. Certainly, salvation is a matter of the heart and does not need four walls. But Christ does call us to worship, and to act
together on his behalf. It is not impossible to be a “good Christian” and never step foot in church, but it is unquestionably a hindrance to one’s spiritual growth. If a church has made you feel that “being the church” is about the rules and never about stepping out of line, then please find another one. Church is about your relationship with Jesus the Christ. We promise to never let you lose sight of that. We believe that many people stay away from church because they have simply never been invited in. Take this as your personal invitation. We want you to worship with us — not because we want more numbers, but because we know the Spirit of God is among us when we gather. Finally, we believe God has a word for you about who you are, and more importantly, who He is. Some Sunday morning, come hear this word, experience it, and be the church with us.

Creative alternatives to Easter Egg hunts There are several different ways to celebrate Easter that don’t have to involve hidden eggs. Try out these ideas for some enjoyment. Pin the tail on the Easter bunny: Draw or buy a picture of a bunny. Glue some cotton balls to a piece of cardboard to make tails, using double-sided tape on the back. Spin kids around and have them try to attach the tail Treasure hunt: Instead of children racing around to find hidden eggs, parents can draw up a treasure
map that takes the children, via different clues, to a special treasure hidden. It could be a chocolate bunny or a basket of treats. Easter crafts: Scour the craft store for wooden eggs, crosses, baskets and similar items. Purchase colored pencils or water colors and encourage children to decorate their items. Lucky duck: Marking a painted dot under a few of several rubber ducks that are afloat in a bucket, bathtub or kiddie pool. The children who pick a duck with a mark on the bottom win a prize.
