One day it came to him, he said I know, I will walk on my hands, thats opposite of what everybody else does. May was Downeyvilles 100 year anniversary and Mayor Bosswell had a Circus come for the three day celebration. Freds life is turned upside down.\line\

Tragedy upset my life after my Queen Ann Victorian home went into foreclosure. In an eight by Trailer addition I began rebuilding by eliveating the guilt and shame. I wrote the first five pages of the The Upside Down Clown in longhand. It flowed like water out of my soul. It inspired me to rebuild my life and become all things in discovering a new path. Children need to be encouraged to be all that they can be.

Every year the winds came just before the summer and sure enough when he went outside a pot had blown off and was broken on the porch deck. He was very upset but not so much at the mess as he was at himself.

He sensed a wind of change was needed in his life, he wasnt sure but he knew there had to be change.\ \ Fred was an artist and he illustrated pictures for companies that sold things. He was able to work from his house that he inherited from his aunt. Aunt Mille had raised Fred sense he was a small boy; teaching him to be respectful, courteous and helpful. His had parents died in a car accident. Aunt Mille had passed away just after Fred had graduated from Art School. It had been a few winters since then and Fred missed her a lot, felt lonely and dissatisfied with his life. He wanted to be special and different and maybe even famous.\ \ After some thought He said, I know, I will do the opposite of what everyone else does. It took him a few months to decide, he had a hard time thinking of anything that would make him special and different and maybe even famous. One day it came to him, he said I know, I will walk on my hands, thats opposite of what everybody else does. He thought real hard about it, how would he eat and sleep. He wondered if it would make him sick and if he would be able to walk upside-down all the time. He wondered if it would keep him from doing some things.

Fred set his determination to do it, he just knew he could.\ \ He knew he needed a plan, if he didnt have a plan he was sure to fail. Fred thought that his arms would have to be as strong as his legs, so he started doing pushups every day. Not just once a day but three times a day until he could stand on his hands without getting tired. A few months went by and as Fred tried to walk on his hands he fell. It was easy to stand on his hands in the corner but when he tried walking, he would fall after a few steps. But after many more weeks of practice, Fred was walking all around his house without falling.\ \ Fred was now walking about the house all day long, but finding it difficult doing his everyday chores. There were so many things Fred needed to change, he said I know, I will set my house upside-down, and set about doing it. The furniture he owned he sold, and being quite the handy man he built new upside-down furniture. He had the Plumber come and install new sinks in the floor at the kitchen and bathroom, and he made shelves for them also. Freds new upside-down chair was very comfortable, he built it with just the right slant and lots of cushion. He would hang his legs over the top and support himself with the arm supports to help him while reading, which Fred did a lot of. He also even made a bed for sleeping upside-down.\ \ It took him awhile to get his drawing desk just right; everything seamed backward. He had to remove its legs and build a special chair to work from. Walking upside down wasnt so difficult but working was a real challenge for him. He didnt have the freedom he had before and this made his work more difficult. In his frustration he realized if he would put wheels on the chair it would solve his problem.

It took a major change in the design of the chair and he finally finished it. And within a

few days he was back to work and on schedule.\ \ There were some things that Fred couldnt change. It would have cost him too much money for the Plumber to replace his tub with a shower, so he built himself steps to get in and out of the tub. It was when he was first using the tub steps that Fred ran into trouble. He fell and hurt himself, but not badly. Fred hadnt thought about all the steps he would have to go up and down outside of his house, for he hadnt been out of the house upside-down yet. He said, I know, I will build steps to practice on. So he did; and soon could climb two steps at a time, up and down!\ \ Fred was doing very well in his new upside-down house, it had been almost a year since he first decided he wanted to be special and different and maybe even famous. But there was something missing from his life. He had only gone out of the house to buy food and to get his mail, and not upside down. He had been keeping himself busy at his work, which was more of a challenge than before. It was time, he had decided, to get out of his house and into the world upside-down! He planned his first trip carefully, even what to say when he met someone he knew. He decided to walk up the street for about three blocks, being careful not to be too ambitious.\ \ Out the door, down the steps, through the gate and along the sidewalk he went upside-down!

About a block down the street he met Mrs. Felgord and said, Hi Mrs. Felgord, I m learning to walk on my hands, how are you. Astonished, Mrs. Felgord said, Im fine Fred, you certainly are an ambitious young man, good for you. Fred crossed the street, and went back down the sidewalk on the other side, all the while people staring at him with curiosity. He was getting tired and he saw a fence up ahead that was just the right height for him to hang his legs over and rest. He started back after about a ten minute and on the way met his neighbor from across the street Mr. Gillford and said, Hi Mr. Gillford, Im learning to walk on my hands, how are you? Amazed, Mr. Gillford said, Well good for you Fred, Im fine. By the time Fred got home he was exhausted and took a nap.\ \qc\fs24\b\ Chapter 2 Fred goes to Town\ \ql\fs22\b0\ Fred set about walking every day to build up his strength, it was about a half mile to town and his shopping usually lasted a half-hour. He planed his first trip downtown very carefully, purposely making the trip short and with few stops. He knew people downtown would think it strange, a man walking upside-down around town doing his business, so he even planed what he might say. The day had come to go downtown and he felt a bit nervous, but he was committed to be different. And certainly he was, and he felt special and maybe someday he would even be famous. He met Mrs. Felgord on the way. He said, Hi Mrs. Felgord, How are you? Mrs. Felgord said, Im fine Fred, you certainly have learned to walk on your hands well, good for you! Just before Fred arrived downtown he stopped to rest. He hung his legs over the bus bench; no one came to catch the bus while rested. After ten minutes he was off to his first stop, the Post Office.\ \ He was up the stairs quickly, and had learned to open doors with his feet. Everyone looked on with amazement as Fred stood in line, but no one said a word. Mr. Upletter was at the window and Fred put a note on the counter for the amount of stamps he needed. Perplexed, Mr. Upletter leaned over the counter and said, Fred Goodwrite, what are you doing? Fred said, I ve decided to be different and walk upside-down, it makes me feel special, and someday maybe Ill even be famous. Mr. Upletter said, Well good for you and handed him his stamps. Fred hurried out of the Post Office, he went down the stairs and headed for his next stop, the Bank.\ Mr. Truebill, the banker, met Fred as he came through the door and said, What on Earth are you doing Fred Goodwrite? Fred said, I ve decided to be different and walk

upside-down, it makes me feel special and someday maybe Ill even be famous. Mr. Truebill said, Ha, special, foolish is more like it. Fred wasn t embarrassed by what Mr. Truebill had said. Fred said to him, The folly of fools is dishonesty Mr. Truebill, I am true to my commitment. Mr. Truebill said, Oh \endash ah \endash well, good for you.

Everyone who saw Fred was amazed at his confidence and how well he could walk upside-down. Fred finished his banking and headed home.\ \ Fred had decided to treat himself for his successful trip downtown at the Ice-cream Shop, which was the last shop going out of the town. Mrs. Spumoni the proprietor saw Fred as he walked in. She said, Oh my gosh Fred Goodwrite, what are you doing walking on your hands? Fred said, I ve learned to walk on my hands because I wanted to be different and special and who knows maybe someday Ill even be famous. Mrs. Spumoni said, Well good for you Fred, would you like to order ice-cream? Fred asked for a double scoop of rocky road ice cream in a cup with a lid. He paid Mrs. Spumoni, put his ice cream in his pack and headed for the bus benches just down the block.\ \ He had just hung his legs over the bench and got out his ice cream to eat while he rested when he saw two children coming up the sidewalk. It was Jenny Felgord and her brother. They asked him why he was hanging upside-down with his legs hanging over the bench. Fred said, I decided to be different and I learned to walk on my hands, I m resting so I can walk home. Jenny said, That ice-cream sure looks good Fred. He gave them both a quarter for ice cream.

He finished eating his ice cream, put the cup in the trash, and headed for home.\ \ He met Mrs. Felgord a block before he came to his house and said, Hi, Mrs. Felgord, how are you? She was in her rose garden working and said, Fred Goodwrite, everyone is talking about you all over town, they say someday maybe you might even be famous.

Good for you Fred. By the way Fred, have you seen Jenny? Yes, she and Jimmy are at Mrs. Spumonis Ice cream shop, I hope its O.K. I gave them a quarter for ice cream.

Fred thanked her for the complement and headed home. He was exhausted when he got home, the phone was ringing off the hook, but he knew it was only people curious about what they heard today. So he turned off the bell and took a well-deserved nap.\ \ Freds first trip downtown was a success and he was surprised when Mr. Truebill tried to provoke him and he remembered the proverb Aunt Mille had taught him. But there was one thing that he hadnt thought about in all his planning, winter would be here soon.

Their winters in Downeyville were not real cold but they did have an occasional snow storm that usually left an inch or so of snow. Fred knew he would have a difficult time with the leather gloves he had been wearing. So Fred had an idea to make rubber gloves with insulated liners, and set about making them and preparing for winter. Winter came unexpectedly early with a light snow falling in the late fall and he was surprised to see snow falling as he glanced out of his window. But was glad he had not put off working to prepare for winter, he had just finished his winter gloves and was working on his upside-down raincoat.\ \ The following day was perfect for him to try out his new winter gear. It wasnt snowing anymore and there was only a light layer of snow on the ground. Fred slipped on his glove liners and then the rubber gloves securing them tightly with the straps and headed out the door. The snow had blown onto his front porch and the steps were covered also and as he started down the steps and got to the last step he fell and bruised his left shoulder and bumped his head. Fred said to himself, this will never work, my inside gloves are slipping inside the rubber gloves. Fred had the hardware store deliver some special glue for rubber and glued the liners into the rubber

gloves. The glue was fast drying and Fred was ready to try again but this time he was especially careful going down the stairs and he practiced walking in the snow for quite a while. It was actually fun, he felt like it was his first time in the snow.\ \ \qc\fs24\b Chapter 3 The Circus comes to Town\fs22\b0\ \ql\ Fred now had confidence in himself, it seemed for him normal doing almost every thing upside down. Although he had only been downtown a few times, everyone seemed to be comfortable with Fred s unusual routine. And it did make him feel special and different and he was famous after all, at least in Downeyville.\ \ The Towns people were very surprised to see Fred downtow in the snow. They thought for sure that Fred wouldnt venture out in winter, at least not walking upside-down. Mr. Upletter said Fred was courageous, Mr. Truebill said Fred was extraordinary, and Mr. Gilford said that Fred was sure to be famous one day. Fred was able to make it through the winter well. He had spent extra time planning so he would only have to make trips to town when he needed to. The towns people realized that Fred was serious about this wild thing he was doing. But they were convinced of Freds determination after they saw in him out about town in the rain and snow.\ Winter had past mostly uneventful for Fred, and the towns people had become quite accustomed to seeing Fred out and about town as spring came to an end. The children especially liked it when Fred would come to town; he would perform tricks for them, he could stand on one hand and turn around. He could hop up and down the stairs and had even learned to do a flip off the stairs. Fred was so used to walking on his hands now that he didnt even think about it. He could do almost all the things he used to do when he was like everyone else. But there was something missing in Freds life, he was lonely. People still didnt know how to act around Fred and treated him different than before.\ \ Spring was finally coming to Downeyville; and this summer was special because it was Downeyvilles one hundred-year anniversary and Mayor Bosswell had arranged for a circus to come to town for three days on May Day. Everyone was excited with anticipation and it was thrilling when the circus arrived at Downeyville; the whole town was in commotion. The circus performers were coming down main-street, there were clowns and jugglers and the acrobats were leading the troupe and turning somersaults and cartwheels and flipping up high into the air to be caught by clowns. There was even a woman who walked on her hands and Mayor Bosswell said, Fred Goodwrite is much better than that, maybe he could perform in the circus. Following the performers were horses pulling carts with big cages and wild animals in them. Mrs. Felgord said, Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my. Then came the big wagons carrying the tent and all the equipment and finally several Elephants were at the end.\ \qc\fs24\b\ Chapter 4 The May Day Celebration\fs22\b0 \ \ql\ The circus headed out of town to set up at Farmer Johns pasture that was on the outskirts of town next to the creek; he had donated it for the celebration. All of Downeyville was preparing for the May Day Celebration; baking pies, gathering gunny sacks for the sack race, moving picnic tables out to the clearing by the creek, and a group of men were building a bandstand for the Musicians. And Fred, being so handy with his hands and knowing how to build sturdy things was in charge. Mayor Bosswell said, Fred sure is a talented man. Mr. Gillford said, I think someday he may even be famous. All of the circus performers and the animal trainers and the roustabouts and even the ringmaster worked together and had the Big Tent up with and every thing in it in one day. It was a long day for everyone and when the sun went down they had just finished the work and everyone went home to rest up for the

big May Day Celebration tomorrow.\ \ Fred to was especially tired from the day s work, it was no small job supervising ten men and building a bandstand in one day. He had gotten home and just finished his dinner when the phone rang. It was the Ringmaster Mr. Fulljoy. He said, Fred, I have heard about you all over the state, how you walk on your hands all day long and even do tricks. Will you perform with us tomorrow Fred was amazed that the Ringmaster had called him and asked him to perform tomorrow. He said, Of course, I would be delighted to. The Ringmaster said, Well then, I m looking forward to meeting you tomorrow, see you then. Fred was so excited he could hardly sleep that night.\ \ Well, who would of thought that little Jenny Felgord would win the sack race, but she did. Mrs. Upletter won first prize for her elderberry pie. And Fred thought for sure that the platform would sink into the ground when they put the piano on it, but it didnt. All the neighboring cities came to celebrate with the people of Downeyville. There was Mr. Truebills brother from Thornhollow, and all of his nine children. And from Woodlyn came Mr. Gillfords sister with her two sons, Jimmy the oldest won second place in the sack race. Bobby, his brother said, You would have won if you didnt trip. People came from all over, from Monica Bay, from Woodholly, from Angelsville and as far away as Midway City.\ \ Fred left the picnic early to find Mr. Fulljoy, the Ringmaster. He came to just outside the tent where two clowns were practicing and he introduced himself and asked where he could find Mr. Fulljoy the Ringmaster, Stubby the clown introduced himself and said he would find Mr. Fulljoy in the big tent with the acrobats. Fred entered the Big Tent and as he looked up he saw a woman doing a somersault in the air and caught by a very muscular man. Mr. Fulljoy came over immediately, introduced himself again and told Fred that he would be working with Alfonso and Resha. When Alfonso and Resha saw Fred they came rushing down from the trapeze to meet him. Fred thanked Mr. Fulljoy for giving him the opportunity to perform with the circus and Mr. Fulljoy said, Youre going to do just fine, just listen to Alfonso, he will show you what to do.\ \ The muscular man said, Hi, my name is Alfonso. Fred reached up and Alfonso bent down and they shook hands.

Alfonso said, This is our aerialist Resha, her real name is Sherry; but Mr. Fulljoy changed her name for the circus act. Fred shook her hand also and they asked him to show them all the tricks he could do. He stood on one hand and turned circles, he ran up and down stairs and even ran up the stairs did a flip landing on his feet and back onto his hands. And he did somersaults with a flip in mid air on every third somersault.

Alfonso showed Fred how to put all his tricks together for an act. But Alfonso said, This will never do, come with me, well see if one of my costumes will fit you.\ \ \qc\fs24\b Chapter 5 Could I really be Famous?\fs22\b0\ \ql\ Fred was overwhelmed by what had all of a sudden happened to him. Everything was happening so fast, just a week ago he was just an extraordinary oddity in his small town and now he was performing in a Circus act. But something inside of him knew that he could do it, and besides he may even become famous.\ \ After everyone was seated the Ringmaster started the Celebration with the song America the Beautiful with the Downeyville musicians assisting. Then Mayor Bosswell made a long speech, which bored everyone except his wife. The Elephants burst through the tent doors with a commotion that excited everyone. They did all kinds of tricks and when Stubby the clown came up and pulled their tails they would knock him down with the spray of water from their trunks. Next the Lions and Tigers and Bears did their tricks. It was time for the acrobat s performance,

Fred was a bit nervous and he had never worn tights before, but he was sure he would do well. All the performers ran about doing acrobatic feats that were amazing, including Fred.\ \ Then the ringmaster said, Ladies and Gentlemen and children too, it is my pleasure to introduce a very special guest who will perform unbelievable feats never performed by any man before, Downeyvilles own Fred Goodwrite. Everyone stood to their feet and applauded and Freds heart sank for a few seconds; then he said to himself, Ill do well, Alfonso even said so. Fred did all of his usual tricks that most of the towns people had seen him do with a few new ones that Alfonso had suggested in between. But for his finale he did something he had only practiced with Alfonso. He ran up the steps, did three flips from his hands to his feet at the top of the steps and then ran down. This time he positioned himself further away from the steps and stood on one hand for the longest time pointing at the steps. Then he took off running as fast as he could up the steps and turned a double somersault in mid air and then the clowns caught him.\ \ Everyone jumped to their feet and applauded Fred. Mrs. Felgord said, nobody has ever done that before, Fred sure is special. Mr. Upletter said, Fred is different than anybody Ive ever known. And Mr. Gilford said, I believe Fred will be famous one day. Fred took his place with the clowns and the jugglers for a ringside view of the trapeze performance. He was amazed at Resha s courage and skill as she flew through the air turning somersaults and Alfonso catching her with his hands by her feet.

It looked as if Alfonso would always miss catching her as she flew through the air, but he didnt. Everyone applauded.\ \ To everyones surprise the Elephants burst through the tent door again. Around the center ring they went again. Stubby the Clown followed them stumbling over his huge feet while trying to pull the Elephants tails. They went out the same door they came in and just as the last elephant was about to go out she turned and sprayed Stubby with water. Everyone laughed. Then the ringmaster thanked everyone for coming and encouraged them to come again tomorrow. He said that they had planed an all-new show and the carnival would start at ten oclock tomorrow morning.\ \ Many of the towns people crowded around Fred congratulating him for his performance. Mayor Bosswell said that Fred had done the town proud and everyone agreed. Mr. Truebill said, Good for you Fred. Fred thanked everyone and said, If it wasnt for Mr. Fulljoy and especially Alfonso, I would never been able to the double flip.

Mr. Fulljoy thanked Fred for an excellent performance, Alfonso said Fred did superbly, and Resha, whos real name is Sherry, said, Fred, you did wonderfully, your so talented and courageous. Fred thanked them all for the complements and he and Alfonso went off to the trailer to change. Alfonso told Fred to be sure to come early to practice for the new show, that he had new tricks for Fred to learn.\ \ Fred said he thought that Mr. Fulljoy had only wanted him to perform once. Alfonso said, You can t quit now, everyone is expecting you, you are the special attraction. Sherry said that Freds act was as professional as theirs was. Fred agreed that he would perform and said, O.K., I will come early. Alfonso said, Dont worry Fred, you will do fine. Fred could hardly believe they wanted him to perform all three nights. It made him feel very special to be a part of the circus.\ \ The next day at the Carnival everyone had great fun. There were Elephant rides for the children. Games of chance where you could win a prize. And a house with mirrors along the hallways; everyone inside was confused and didnt know how to get out. Some of the mirrors made you look fat and some of the mirrors made you look skinny. Alfonso was also the strong man for the circus; there was a twenty-five-dollar

prize for anyone who could beat him at arm wrestling, but it cost a dollar to try. Fred didnt go to the carnival; his last two days were more work than he was use to, so he decided it would be best to rest up for his performance.\ \ Fred arrived late at the tent to practice for the evening performance, he intended to take a short afternoon nap but overslept. He didnt see anyone around, just then Sherry, whose stage name is Resha, came up behind him and said hello. Fred was surprised, he turned and apologized for being late. Sherry said that she had just arrived also and that Alfonso had to take his wife to the doctor that she was distracted while juggling and a bowling pin hit her in the forehead. Alfonso had asked Sherry to work with Fred on the new program. Fred had never met a more beautiful woman and he was a bit shy, but she made him feel at ease and comfortable because she seemed to know and appreciate Freds unusual character and he didnt feel strange around her like he did with the towns people. Sherry thought Fred some new acrobatic moves to add to his performance, she was amazed at Freds strength, and his agility, and at his perfect balance. Fred learned the new moves so quickly that they had time for him to show Sherry some of his moves and was dazzled at her new found ability to walk on her hands.\ \ \qc\fs24\b Chapter 6 The Carnival\fs22\b0\ \ql\ Alfonso and Marta arrived back just in time for the evening performance and saw Sherry walking on her hands; he said, Bravo Resha, bravo you walk on your hands just like Fred. Alfonso said that the doctor had told them that Marta was fine, the swelling had gone down and she would be able to perform tonight. So they hurried off to dress for the show.\ \ More people had shown up at the second night s performance than the first. It was a great success. Everyone stood and cheered Fred again during his performance. And Resha, whose real name is Sherry because Mr. Fulljoy changed it for the show, amazed the crowd with her aerial feats. And it sure looked like Alfonso would miss catching her, but he never did. Marta didnt miss any of the bowling pins she was juggling. And this time when Stubby the Clown pulled the Elephants tail, she turned around and chased him out the other tent door. The second show that Mr. Fulljoy had planed was even better than the first!\ \ Fred and Sherry and Alfonso and Merta sat and talked for hours after the show. Fred had them lean a bale of straw at an angle for him to hook his legs over. They told him of all their experiences and places they had traveled, and he told them of his experiences in learning to walk on his hands. Merta said, I have never talked to an upside down face before, it seems like you should have eyes in your chin. Alfonso said, O Merta! and Sherry laughed. Fred understood what she meant, he too had that problem at first. Mr. Fulljoy came in and congratulated everyone for a fabulous show and said they should get an early start tomorrow for the final performance, for it would be their longest show.\ \ The sun was already down when Fred left, but it was a short walk home and there was a full moon that night. Freds head was swimming with all the thought of the day, everyone at the circus treated him like a normal person and the whole day was not like work at all but so much fun and Sherry was wonderful. He got up early the next morning, and was excited about going to the carnival, so he finished his chores quickly and was off down the road.

He was surprised to meet Sherry there; she was off work in the mornings and said she would show him the carnival. They went to the ring toss but he couldnt do that. They went to the shooting gallery but he couldnt do that. And they went to the softball throw but he couldnt do that either.\ \ But they did see Jimmy, Mr. Gillfords nephew, knock down seven sets of milk bottles stacked on top of each other and win a new baseball

bat. His little brother Bobby said, You just got lucky. After that they went to the house of mirrors. Sherry laughed at Fred when they came to the mirror that made them look fat.

She said, Fred, upside down you look so funny. Fred laughed at Sherry too; they laughed at each other. Sherry said, Lets go watch the Strong Man show, youll never guess who the strong man is, hes Alfonso!\ \ Fred was amazed at Alfonsos act, he even bent a steel bar. At the end of the performance Alfonso challenge all the men to come and arm wrestle him. Several men arm wrestled Alfonso and they all lost; even Big Johnny who was Farmer Johns son and could lift a one-year-old calf clear off the ground. Sherry said, Fred, you should try wrestling Alfonso, I think you could win. Fred said, Well, I dont know and then he realized he could have done the softball toss and even the shooting gallery. He said, You know Sherry, I believe I will. Sherry said, Good for you Fred!\ \ Fred walked up to the table and Sherry followed. Alfonso said, My friend Fred, you want to wrestles with me, I do not wrestle friends for money but we will wrestle for fun. Fred was a little dizzy at first when he sat in the chair across from Alfonso; he hadnt sat in a regular chair in almost two years. They cupped their hands together and Alfonso asked Sherry to say go. Freds arm bent back slowly, he could hardly believe how strong Alfonso was as he looked into Alfonsos straining face. Alfonso was astonished too as Freds arm moved upward and slowly bent Alfonsos arm back. A large crowd gathered and the struggle lasted over twenty minutes!\ \ Finally it was over and both men were exhausted. Never had either of them struggled so hard in all their life. Fred finally caught his breath and said, Alfonso, you are so strong, I can hardly believe how strong you are. Afterwards Sherry told Fred she was proud of him, not for his mighty effort, but because he had decided to wrestle Alfonso and gave she him a kiss on the forehead. Alfonso finally caught his breath. He said, Fred, my friend, you are a champion, no one has ever beaten me. Bravo, my friend, bravo. The crowd cheered for Fred, and Mayor Bosswell said, Good for you Fred, your our champion.\ \ Fred thanked everyone for the compliments. He thanked Alfonso for being such a generous sportsman. He thanked Sherry for all the fun he had with her at the carnival. And he said goodbye to Alfonso and Sherry. And told them that he said he need to go home and rest before he came back to practice for tonight s show. Alfonso said, I believe I will rest also, it was like wrestling twenty men with Fred. Fred walked home from the carnival and could hardly make it up the steps of his house. He collapsed on his bed and fell fast asleep.\ \ \qc\fs24\b Chapter 7 The Final Performance\b0\fs22\ \ql\ Something was worrying Fred as he was walking upside-down to the practice for last tonight s show. He realized that today was the last day the circus would be in town and that all his new friends who appreciated and understood him would be gone. Sadness overcame him and he felt like he was lost, he didnt know how he would bare the loss of his new friends after the circus left town.\ \ Just as he arrived at the Big Tent, Mr. Fulljoy met him. He thanked Fred for all the hard work he had put into his performances. Then he said, Fred, I have a proposal for you, would you consider joining our circus. We are always looking for new acts to make our circus better, and yours is certainly uniquely exceptional. Fred didnt know what to say and didnt say anything. So Mr. Fulljoy asked him to think about it. He said that Fred wouldnt have to leave with them tomorrow but could meet them in a month or so if he decided to join the circus.\ \ Their last show was a tremendous success. Mr. Fulljoy, the Ringmaster, always planned a different show for each night. Tonight he added something special to Freds performance. Stinky the clown

had gotten sick, and Mr. Fulljoy asked Fred to take his place. They made him a costume, which Fred got to keep, and he had seen Stinkys routine enough times that he learned it easily. Mr. Fulljoy, the ringmaster, introduced Fred. He said, Ladies and gentlemen and children too, it is my great pleasure to introduce to you, Zeno, the worlds only Upside-Down Clown.\ \ Zeno was amazing in his first performance as a clown. He made everyone laugh, and whod of thought that Mr. Fulljoy would have Zeno pull the Elephants tail, but he did. The circus ended with Mr. Fulljoy, the ringmaster, calling all the performers to come forward to take their bows. The whole crowd stood to their feet and cheered. The three Elephants came in and stood on their hind legs. Zeno pulled the Elephants tail again and they chased him around the ring; he was falling down the whole time as the Elephant nudged him with her trunk. He got up on his hands and ran again until they were out of the tent.\ \ Mr. Fulljoy thanked everyone for coming and promised them that he would schedule to come next year again. This has been our most successful Circus this year. Everyone crowded out of the big tent and headed for the concession stands. Mr. Fulljoy came up to Fred and said, Fred, you could be famous if you want to be. And little Jimmy Gilford said, When I grow up, I m gonna join the circus and be a upside-down clown just like you Fred. Mrs. Felgord said, Fred you certainly amazed us all. Mr. Upletter said, Fred I certainly miss judged you. You are nobodys fool. Afterward the whole town came up and congratulate Fred for his excellent performance.\ \ \qc\fs24\b Chapter 8 The performers Celebrate\fs22\b0\ \ql\ After everyone went home all the performers and Fred gathered in the big tent. They put a bale of hay on this side so that Fred could lean against it upside down. Mr. Fulljoy was so pleased with the performances of all of his people that he congratulated everyone of them personally for their performance telling each of them how they had made this performance better than any time before. And then he asked Fred to get up so that everyone could thank him. And they did, every one of them. He told him all that Fred s performance made this one of their most amazing performances ever. Fred blushed.\ \ Mr. Fulljoy had Stubby the clown bring in a bottle of wine and he made a toast. He said These past three days have been the best years of my life as a Ringmaster And I owe it all to you performers and to her new friend Fred Goodright. He said to Fred, Fred I would like you to join our family and become one of our featured performers. We will be packing up and leaving Downeyville very early tomorrow morning. I would surely appreciate if you would come by to say whether not you would like to join our Circus or at least let us thank you again. Everyone raised their glasses and said Cheers.\ \ Sherry came up to Fred afterwards and told him how much she appreciated him not just as a performer but as a friend and perhaps something more? Fred liked Sherry a whole lot, and maybe something more! He told Sherry that he would come by in the morning to say goodbye to everybody and to act Mr. Fulljoy know whether or not he had made a decision. Fred was exhilarated with this whole circus experience and as he walked home Upside Down on his hands he pondered Mr. Fulljoys proposal. By the time he got home he was exhausted, took a bath and crawled into bed. He couldnt sleep for the longest time going over whether or not he should accept a job with the Circus. Had lived here all his life, and to leave all of his friends in town who now appreciated him for his real talents. This was a hard decision for him to make. fairground they were all gone, the Big Tent, the Wagons with the animals, the Elephants and of course all of his new friends. Especially Sherry. He was so disappointed in himself, surely they must have guessed that he was so exhausted that was the reason that he didnt come by to say Goodbye. And he so wanted to tell Sherry the reasons that he could not leave Downeyville.\ \ A week went by and news came about the Circus performance in the next town Midway City. The news was that Sherry had fallen from the trapeze and hurt herself badly. The news upset Fred so much that he decided to go To Midway City. That was 75 miles away, and by horse it took all day long. When he got there this Circus was no longer there. He remembered that his aunt Millie had a friend who lived there, his name was Alexander. So we went to the post office and asked the Postmaster where Mr. Alexander lived. Mr. Goodletter, the postmaster told Fred that he lived at the west end of Town about a half a mile on the main road. When Fred arrived at Mr. Alexanders house and knocked at the door nobody was there. He heard some noise around the back and followed it Mr. Alexander was working on something in his little shop behind the house. Fred introduced himself as Aunt Millies nephew.\ \ He said, I remember you Fred when you were very small. Fred asked him about the Circus, and he told him the whole sad story. He said, I was there and saw the whole thing, it was terrible and apparently the Circus performer, Resha had broken her hip. He said that it upset the Ringmaster so badly that the next day he told all of his performers that he was finished and was that he was sorry but he could no longer go on with the Circus. A few days later some people came and hauled off all of the circus equipment; the Big Tent, the Animals in the Cages, and someone came for the Elephants also. And by the end of the week Mr. Fulljoy took his daughter Sherry home. Nobody seemed to know where that was. All of the performers had already left and gone their own ways. Every time he heard about a Circus he would inquire if anybody knew about Ringmaster Fulljoy and his daughter Sherry. Even though Fred had realized his dreams to be special, different and even famous he wouldve given that all up if he had only changed his mind about Sherry.
