Mientras que la Primera Sinfonía pretendía maniatar la pasión a través del rigor de la forma artística - el cincelado de dragones del que hablaban las notas de programa - , y hacía del elemento expresivo el centro de atención de la obra, la Segunda Sinfonía quiere hacer del movimiento su punto de partida. El resultado es una reflexión sinfónica sobre la danza, la Danza de la Creación, el movimiento como ser y devenir - simultáneos - del cosmos.

La obra comienza presentando en su Adagio inicial el material melódico que encadenará los tres movimientos. Se trata de un material melódico mínimo, una segunda que asciende y desciende, probablemente el material melódico más sencillo posible, cosa razonable para una obra que - en principio - quiere concentrarse en el movimiento antes que en los grandes intervalos líricos. Le sigue sin interrupción un Allegro basado en ese material mínimo, pero esta vez declamando con claridad el impulso kinético que caracterizará al resto de la sinfonía. El segundo movimiento, una passacaglia, continúa esta tendencia motórica a pesar de tratarse de un movimiento lento. Se trata de un amplio fresco que sugiere aquella rueda gigantesca girando lentamente mientras define el cosmos. Un círculo de fuego en lento y eterno movimiento acumulando estratos de la más variada información. Por último, en una sinfonía donde el concepto omnipresente es el del movimiento, el Scherzo - el número kinético por excelencia de una sinfonía - resultaría redundante. De allí que el tercer movimiento funda en unasolaentidadeltradicionalScherzoconelFinale,llevandolasinfoníaasuconclusión.

Los antiguos hindúes tuvieron una manera muy poética y plástica para describir la relación entre Dios y su Creación.EnOccidente esmuyconocidalaimagendel Nataraja en lasesculturascreadasporla dinastíaCholaen el siglo décimo y que se vienen imitando desde entonces en bronce, piedra o madera. En esa representación, Nataraja (literalmente, el Señor de la Danza) es la imagen del dios Shiva como el Bailarín Supremo, el Dios que Danza,yquealhacerlo,danzalaCreación.

AnthonydeMello,sacerdote jesuitanacidoenlaIndia en1931,loexpresaconsabiaclaridadensurecopilación El canto del pájaro:

"Dios danza su Creación. Él es su bailarín; su Creación es la danza. La danza es diferente del bailarín; y, sin embargo, no tiene existencia posible con independencia de Él. No es algo que se pueda encerrar en una caja y llevárselo a casa. En el momento en que el bailarín se detiene, la danza deja de existir." Y continúa sugiriendo ..."guarda silencio y mira la danza. Sencillamente, mira: una estrella, una hoja marchita, un pájaro, una piedra. Cualquierfragmentodeladanzasirve.Mira.Escucha.Huele.Toca.Saborea.Yseguramentenotardarásenverlea él,alBailarínenpersona".

Si bien estas ideas poéticas funcionan como germen a muchas actitudes musicales de la obra, es importante hacer notar que no existe ninguna cita ni mención de música hindú en la sinfonía. Muy por el contrario; la obra se desenvuelve con un claro y fuerte acento latinoamericano, ideas muy pregnantes y colores intensos. Un reflejo musical-ysinfónico-delpaisajesonoroquenosrodea.

While the First Symphony intended to handcuff passion through the rigor of artistic form - the chiseling of dragons mentioned in the program notes - and made expression the center of attention of the work, the Second Symphony wants to take movement as its point of departure. The result is a symphonic reflection on dance, the DanceofCreation,movementasbeinganddevelopment-simultaneously-oftheCosmos.

The symphony starts by presenting in its opening Adagio the melodic material that will eventually connect the three movements. It is a minimal melodic material, the succession of an ascending and a descending interval of a second, probably the simplest possible melodic material, a reasonable idea for a work that wants to concentrate - in principle-inmotionratherthaninlargeandlyricalintervallic leaps.Thissectionisfollowedwithout interruptionby an Allegro based in that minimal material, but this time clearly stating the kinetic impulse that will characterize the rest of the symphony. The second movement, a passacaglia in binary meter, continues this motoric tendency, this time exploring the "slow" aspect of it. It is a wide fresco that suggests a gigantic wheel slowly rotating while defining the Cosmos. A circle of fire in slow and eternal movement accumulating strata of the most varied information. Finally, in a symphony where the omnipresent concept is that of movement, the Scherzo - the most kinetic movement of a traditional symphony - would be redundant. That is why the third movement in this symphonyblendsinonesingleentitythetraditionalScherzoandtheFinale,takingtheworktoitsconclusion.

Ancient Hindus had a very poetic and visual way to describe the relationship between God and its Creation. The image of the Nataraja in the sculptures created by the Chola dynasty in the Xth. century is a well-known feature in the Western world as it keeps being imitated since then in bronze, stone or wood. In this representation, Nataraja (literally the Lordof Dance) is the image of the god Shiva as the Supreme Dancer, the God that dances and who, by doingit,dancestheCreation.

Anthony de Mello, the Jesuit priest born in India in 1931, expresses this with wise clarity in his recompilation "Thechantofthebird":

"God dances his Creation. He is its dancer; his Creation is the dance. Dance is different from the dancer; and, however, it cannot exist independently from Him. It is not something that can be kept in a box and taken home. In the moment that the dancer stops, dance stops existing". And the priest continues by advising: "Be silent and contemplate the dance. Simply watch: a star, a rotten leaf, a bird, a stone. Any fragment of the dance serves the purpose. Watch. Listen. Smell. Touch. Taste. And it will surely not take long for you to see Him, the Dancer in person".

Althoughthesepoeticthoughtsworkastheseminalideafor manymusicalattitudesofthiswork,itisimportantto notice that there is no citation nor mention of Hindu music the symphony. Rather the contrary: the work unfolds with a strong and clear Latin-American accent, very pregnant ideas and intense colors. A reflection - musical and symphonic-ofthesoniclandscapethatsurroundsus.
