About the collection:

Herbert Bayer: Bauhaus Master marks the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, in 1919 and features rare works by the groundbreaking 20th-century graphic designer Herbert Bayer. On view in the second-floor permanent collection galleries from Nov. 16 through April 5, 2020, the exhibition follows Bayer’s role as both student and teacher at the Bauhaus, as well as his illustrious career in the United States following his 1938 emigration.

COLOR RINSE After leaving the Bauhaus in 1928,

Bayer worked in Berlin and in 1938

he left Germany for New York City. He

eventually moved to Aspen, Colorado, a town he helped transform into a thriving cultural center. In the United States, Bayer created information graphics, books, advertisements, exhibitions,

architecture, and magazine layouts for diverse clients, and he pioneered the field of corporate design.

This exhibition marks the centenary of

the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, in 1919.

from the Bauhaus period, have been

generously loaned by Merrill C. Berman.

In 2015, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum acquired over 500 pieces documenting Bayer’s later

career, made possible through a gift from the Taub Foundation. They are

presented here to the public for the first

GREAT IDEAS OF WESTERN MAN Herbert Bayer first became involved

with Container Corporation of America (CCA) when Walter Paepcke, at the

suggestion of his wife Elizabeth, began commissioning advertisements from avant-garde artists and designers, advocating for a collaborative

relationship between art and industry.

After completing several innovative advertisements, Bayer designed

an exhibition for CCA in 1945 titled “Modern Art in Advertising,” which

opened at the Art Institute of Chicago

Bayer went on to serve as a consultant to CCA and eventually became

Chairman of the Department of Design (later renamed the Department of

Visual Communication), where he had control over all visual aspects of the corporation.
