The Both Sides Now Quintet is a jazz ensemble fronted by and featuring the original music of Edmonton based vocalist, composer and arranger, Kate Blechinger. Praised for her innovation and charisma, Blechinger draws influence from a variety of sources, but focuses on her two musical loves - folk music and jazz music. She takes influence from the sincere, lyrical storytelling typical of folk music icons like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Neil Young, and injects her stories with jazz harmony, instrumentation and improvisation reminiscent of artists Ella Fitzgerald and Becca Stevens. The result is an intriguing and totally individual blend of styles that keeps audiences engaged and entertained.

She has taken poems and lyrics that possess a personal resonance for her and framed them in original new compositions that utilize vocals for the first time. The result is an eclectic collection that incorporates elements of pop, art song, classical, folk and jazz. The project may be difficult to categorize, but it is charmingly accessible. The fluent playing of Amanda and her A-list ensemble matches the melodic eloquence of her compositions, while the poetic power of the lyrics and poems shine brightly.
