...With Marty Forbes & Bob Layton

know I know… it’s summer

and we had a long, cold, brutal winter. But, this on-ice news is worth bringing up, even at this time of the year. If you were living in an igloo over the winter, you may have missed the fact that Edmonton will be hosting the 2012 IIHU World Junior Hockey Championships—a huge deal in the world of sports. Actually, we are sharing the honour with Calgary. The tournament will be played in both cities and actually bridges two years…. it starts late in 2011 and finishes early in 2012. Co organizers Lyle Best, president of

Alberta is home to several Western Canada Junior Hockey League teams that are near enough to either of the cities to get involved promotionally in the tournament this winter. “A joint Calgary-Edmonton bid is a natural choice when it comes to the world Junior Championship,” points out CHL president David Branch. “Both markets are home to model junior franchise and some of the best junior hockey fans in the country.” Lyle explains, “This is the 30th anniversary of this format, and several surprises are coming. The best part for both the participants and the crowd is that it’s the first time 12851 - 56 Street, every junior game will be Edmonton, AB T5A 0C9 played in an NHL arena. Edmonton-based QuikCard, and former hockey great Jim Piplinski of Calgary put the bid together as a joint submission. Both of our great cities will enjoy economic spinoff during the lucrative Christmas holidays with games at Rexall Place and the Pengrowth Saddledome. “We are thrilled to have partnered with Edmonton and won the bid to host this prestigious event,” says Jim. “The world Junior Hockey Championship is truly a Canadian tradition and a tremendous event that we anticipate will bring significant benefit to the Province of Alberta, the tourism industry, and the hockey community.”

The 4th annual fundraising gala dinner in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association-Edmonton was held at Packrat Louie Kitchen & Bar in Old Strathcona. The event is an intimate affair, billed as a non-gala gala, attended by about 120 patrons. The food was fabulous… the conversation lively… the speeches short… the balloons popped. √

Alberta Business Hall of Fame

Since 1980, the Junior Achievement Alberta Business Hall of Fame has inducted 54 men and women whose business leadership and community stewardship shaped the ways that people live, work, and interact. JA created this signature event to help better understand and learn from the great Alberta leadership legacies that have been developed and nurtured over time. Capturing and illuminating the lessons of the past will undoubtedly assist us in better preparing leaders for tomorrow At the May gala, the 2011 Laureates were honoured. Audrey Luft is the President and owner of the Manpower Alberta Franchise, and has over 35 years of industry experience with Manpower Inc. She is responsible for the vision and overall management of Manpower, in addition to active participation on numerous business advisory groups and substantial

involvement on a community level within the province. Audrey contributes a significant amount of time to various boards, committees and foundations in Alberta. For nearly 50 years, the Ghermezian family has contributed significantly to the city’s economic and social success. Jacob “Papa” Ghermezian and his four sons, Eskandar, Nader, Bahman and Raphael initiated, or were actively involved in, the development of many Edmonton landmarks, including their crowning achievement, the West Edmonton Mall. The evening also highlighted the recent partnership of Northlands and Junior Achievement. Northlands has contributed $100,000 to Junior Achievement Northern Alberta/Northwest Territories to help educate more than 16,000 students about being prepared for the work world through hands-on programs, and was the title sponsor of this year’s gala.

s the days count down

before the rubber hits the track, Octane Motorsports Events is in full throttle preparing for this year’s Edmonton Indy. For three exciting days in July—the 22nd to the 24th—race fans and event goers will converge on the City Centre Airport for non-stop track action, traditionally great weather, good music and other great off-track events. Expect changes and improvements with Octane Motorsports Events as this year’s new race promoter. Based out of Montreal, Octane has a reputation of putting on a good race and a great show... promising Edmontonians a weekend they don’t want to miss. “We plan on

44

putting on a show that will not only entertain the crowds but will also make Edmontonians proud that the race is still on and here for the next three years in the heart of the Capital region,” says General Manager Anne Roy. Motorsports isn’t new to this crew. With three major races on its schedule this summer, the team brings a depth of knowledge and experience on the auto-racing world that will elevate the Edmonton Indy to a new level. The Formula 1 Grand Prix, the highest-acclaimed race in the motorsport world, brings over 300,000 fans into Montreal providing the ultimate fan experience both on and off track…something that Octane is determined to do here in Edmonton as well. To round out

the summer, they will be on track again for the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Presented by Dodge August 19th and 20th. “This is the only kind of business that we are involved in, and this is what we love to do. We take great pride in being Canada’s number one motorsports event promoter,” stresses Francois Dumontier, president of Octane Motorsports Events Ltd. So what will we being seeing this year? The 10th round of the IZOD Indy Car Racing Series that runs has other stops throughout North America, Brazil and Japan. This summer, the Edmonton Indy will proudly host three Canadian drivers including a track favourite Paul Tracy, the Indy 500 pole sitter Alex Tagliani and James Hinchcliffe, last

With the recent closing of one of the airport runways, the track has been moved to the opposite side, incorporating a new design by Octane’s Director of Operations Bruno Savard. Drivers liked the old track, but they will love the new one. Many are looking forward to the challenges 2011 will present including two new hair-pin turns and possibly the longest and fastest straightaway in the series. Fans can expect to see some action throughout the weekend as drivers also get accustomed to driving counter clockwise—a unique feature to the track… but also a challenge to the team as it requires different car set ups and a challenge to the driver as going the opposite way puts strains on different muscles in the body. As for the fans, grandstands are now closer to the track, enhancing the overall experience so you will feel the heat

year’s Indy Lights winner. Other drivers to take on the new racetrack include Indy 500 winners Dario Franchitti and Helio Castroneves; female drivers Danica Patrick and Simona de Silvestro, and previous Edmonton winners Sébastien Bourdais, Justin Wilson and Scott Dixon. The City Center Airport has hosted a professional open-wheel race since 2005. From 2005 to 2007 inclusively, the Edmonton race was part of the Champ Car World Series. from the cars and smell the rubber. If on-track action is what you are looking for, then 2011 promises to be an exciting one. As for off-track events, a number of events will be taking place within the fence at the airport for those who are either looking for more than just a racing experience or to fill in some of the down track time. The beer gardens are back this year with entertainment throughout the weekend. Visitors can expect to see some of their favourite annual displays and some new fan-friendly ones. To finish off the event after podium ceremonies on Sunday afternoon, there will be a finale concert in the beer gardens for fans hoping to celebrate and party a little longer.
