the black cheongsam was probably the most enthralling and glamorous to the women of the 1950s and 1960s. In Singapore, the wearing of black cheongsam by women as day and evening wear became more widespread in the 1950s because of modernisation and Westernisation. Black – previously considered inappropriate and taboo because of its symbolic associations with death, evil, tragedy and seduction40 – became a staple in women’s wardrobes. As women looked to fashion centres in Europe and Asia for inspiration, not only was black found in Western dresses but it was also incorporated into the cheongsam. It was widely reported in the papers and local fashion magazines that black was in vogue in fashion capitals such as Paris, Italy, New York and London. By the 1960s, a black cheongsam was believed to be the best investment a busy Singapore working woman could make. Extremely versatile and suitable for day or evening functions if matched with the right accessories, it became an attractive and affordable wardrobe option. Hence, the idea of the black cheongsam as a symbol of modernity gradually became entrenched in the increasingly cosmopolitan mindset of Singapore women. p70
