The key to Gay Widow’s lasting influence on the breed comes from Gay Bar King. James Springer bought Gay Bar King in January of 1967 from George Tyler and Matlock Rose. Tyler and Rose had just purchased Gay Bar King from Russell, when they sold the horse to Springer. Springer turned Gay Bar King over to Doc Spence to train. Spence took over the reins from Bubba Casio. Doc Spence called me one time and explained why Gay Bar King’s show ring experience was limited. He earned his six cutting points at a show in Brenham, Texas. The judge was B. F. Yates and he placed Gay Bar King in a first place tie with the great cutting horse Cross Timber. Shortly after this show, Gay Bar King was diagnosed with a navicular problem and he was retired.
