Foreword
an almost magical value of supplements that are often not even verified by a sufficient “corpus” of studies carried out on humans. In this still confused panorama, the work of my friend Massimo Spattini is meritorious, he not only updated, but also expanded the new edition of this volume. I have known Massimo for more years than I am pleased to remember and during all this time we have shared the passion for the “cast iron”... but while he continued his path as a doctor and popularizer, I moved to a more “secluded” position, dedicating myself to research. Despite this fact, and given the many interests we have in common, we often meet on various occasions and it was during one of those that Massimo asked me to participate in the new edition of his book, with a chapter and this presentation. This text is, to all intents and purposes, a weighty work that could frighten you due to its size, but it is easy to read and, due to its structure, it is also useful for consults in case of doubts or questions on a topic related to nutrition in a particular sport or for a specific supplement. In fact, these pages show not only Massimo’s great transversal culture for everything related to nutrition and well-being, but also his enormous passion, which has led him over the years to deepen these topics by studying, participating at conferences and meeting with researchers from all over the world. This book is a path of studies, career and life that Massimo has admirably managed to condense (even if the number of pages would suggest the opposite) in these pages, which are not only updated on the basis of the most recent research and scientifically accurate, but are also declined with a practical and applicative style, which I’m sure, will find everyone’s approval.
