COMMUNITY
The spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has left us living in unprecedented times and the crisis will have a deep impact on our community. The virus is a particular concern for the elderly and those with health issues and disabilities, and selfisolation will leave many feeling anxious and lonely. The crisis will have an effect on all of our lives, but various initiatives have been set up to provide advice and support during the pandemic. Moseley Together is a COVID-19 community support network and has issued the following statement: "We can help if you are unable to leave your home because of COVID-19; need some help with getting shopping, picking up prescriptions or other errands; feel isolated and need someone to talk to..." You can contact/find more information on Moseley Together on Facebook and Twitter (@moseleytogether), through their website (www.moseleytogether.org. uk) or by email at info@moseleytogether. org.uk / phone and text: 07796 668257. Moseley Together are seeking volunteers for the project. Birmingham Mutual Aid Group is also providing a community response to the crisis and a point of contact if you need help. It can be found on Twitter at @ brummutualaid. People without nearby family or friends will need help in filling that gap and this is where social media can be a positive tool. WhatsApp groups have been set up to create connections for different neighbourhoods and this will provide support for shopping and other issues. Do not stockpile food and products as this will just leave others in a more vulnerable place. Food banks are also struggling in the current climate and are calling for donations of items and money. Rough sleepers will be at risk, especially if suffering from pre-existing health conditions, and could struggle with regular access to hand washing and a safe place for self-isolation. Sex workers and asylum seekers will also be at high risk during the pandemic. COVID-19 Mutual Aid UK aims to support the most vulnerable and has a list of local groups on its website (https:// covidmutualaid.org). employees in the last month (something many of us already suspected) and will struggle with life in the current circumstances. 14+ hour shifts are a reality for those working in healthcare and supporting our most vulnerable people, and this will make childcare and filling the fridge even harder. Spare a thought for them as they will not have the option of working from home. Key workers will continue to be out on the frontline as other sectors go into lockdown. Launched by the Eden Project Communities, Nextdoor's The Community Action Response has been created to encourage everyone to do what they can to support neighbours and the vulnerable and isolated people during the Coronavirus pandemic. The project has listed five things you can do during the crisis: Think of others, consider your actions and be kind: People in every community will face the challenges of Covid-19 in some way – from needing basic provisions to help while they are unwell. Connect and reach out to your neighbours: as self-isolation increases, we need to find new ways to stay connected and check in on one another for our physical and mental wellbeing. Share phone numbers and stay in touch. Make the most of local online groups: Keep up to date, share information and be a positive part of your local community conversations using platforms like Nextdoor. Support vulnerable or isolated people: different groups in our communities are at increased risk and social isolation and loneliness are key concerns for all ages. There are things you can do like volunteering for local support services or donating to food banks to help. Share accurate information and advice: Support anyone who may be anxious about Covid-19. Sign post them to the correct advice from Public Health England and encourage people to follow the correct hygiene practices. Local businesses and employees will also suffer as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak and various crowdfunding campaigns have been set up on social media to help their survival. Little Blackwood had to close on March 17 but are now offering a delivery service via their usual suppliers. Meat, fish, veg, cheese and wine are available to order - just email owners Ben and Zsofia at hello@littleblackwood.co.uk and they will deliver to your home (See page 20 for the price list for this service). Other cafes and restaurants are also offering a similar service through wholesalers or by managing to operate as takeaway/delivery businesses. Check individual social media accounts/ Everything Moseley Facebook group for more information, and Independent Birmingham's website has a list of indie businesses that offer take-away or collection services. All this serves as a partial solution to the empty shelves in supermarkets. Advice and support is available for Kings Heath businesses on the enjoykingsheath.com website. Folk Like These is another local business to prove its creativity and invention beyond closure and is offering live workshops on Instagram (as shown on BBC's Midlands Today). This will help parents struggling with educational and recreational content for their children since school closures. Kindness, creativity and connection, as well as making sure our actions are responsible, will be the basics in helping to keep everyone in our community strong and safe during the Coronavirus outbreak. - Mark Baxter
