Le Coran doit-il se plier à l’analyse de texte ou au contraire, en tant que parole incréée d’Allah, n’est-il déterminé que par lui-même ? À partir de 100 mots tirés du Coran et aux dépens d’une exégèse trop poussée, qui risque d’être sèche et stérile, Malek Chebel dépasse le dilemme théologique et met en exergue les thèmes fondateurs de l’islam en nous restituant les « histoires » que raconte le texte sacré des musulmans. Grâce à ces récits, il illustre la façon dont le Coran traite de la plupart des principes éthiques et moraux (justice, vérité, amour de Dieu, foi…), et touche par là même à son essence prodigieuse, à sa profonde « humanité ».
