Breathing Methods Breathing methods offer good approach. If you cannot move and there is nothing you can do about it, in order to regain your own spirit, you should try catching your breath. As you are lying down, try to breathe from the lower stomach area below the belly button. The idea is to provide your body with fresh oxygen. Try breathing in, and if you are able to repeat this deep respiration several times over, strangely enough you will find that the evil spirits have parted from you. One of the secrets of this breathing method is that as you breathe, light will enter your body. When that happens, the negative influences that are holding you down will let go. At that moment, you will be free. This is how to escape through the breathing method.

Positive Thinking and Self-Reflection Another method is to change your perspective into a positive one. The fact that spiritual influence can approach you is evidence that the wavelengths given off by your mind and the wavelengths of the negative energy are the same, so in this case you should reverse the situation. You must eliminate any thinking about negative things and look towards the light. Think only about wonderful, positive things within your mind. This is another method for dealing with this threat.

Another strategy is to practice self-reflection. Even if the weight on your chest prevents your body from moving and you cannot move your hands either, that does not mean that this restraint is extending into your head. Therefore, while lying down, engage in self-reflection. If you find yourself in such a situation, it means that as some point up to the prior day you have been having trouble with human relationships. In this situation, try thinking about the person with whom you get along the least, a person about whom you get along the least, a person about whom you think, “I can’t stand him”, or, “If only she wasn’t around.” If there is someone in your life who fits this description, then try thinking of him or her and practice self-reflection, then try thinking of him or her and practice self-reflection. In any event, start with apologizing to this person.

Giving Thanks Next, another method is giving thanks. One day is like a lifetime. If you live by this philosophy, then the end of each day corresponds to the end of your entire life. So you should give thanks by saying something like this: “It is my turn to leave this world. Now I can return to a pleasurable world. Looking back over my life on this earth, I can say that I truly had a good life. Thank you so much. Even if I should die here and now, I am satisfied.” By giving thanks like this, you will drive them away. This is another method for dealing with the problem. The next time you experience a bad dream, I suggest that you try our some of the methods explained above. Also before going to bed, if you practice breathing with positive thinking and self-reflection, and giving thanks would make you sleep well.

Hall Dr. Lorraine Cella, who came on board as chief school administrator Jan. 2, 2011 cleaned out her desk and made public her resignation, which had apparently been worked out with school trustees since she gave notice in April of her intention to leave the school system.

I don’t know anything about reviewing restaurants so I’d be terrible at it. I’m impressed by stuff like ‘Nobody spilled anything on me’. Also, living in the city, I find the restaurants there are all cramped. You’re practically eating with the people at the table next to you. In New Jersey, the restaurants seem incredibly spacious by comparison. That’s what I like in a restaurant! Anyway, I think restaurant reviewers just get into that game to get free diners. As a former patron of Vespas, until they changed the name to Anthony’s and went out of business, I’m glad there is another restaurant to take its place. I must admit I’m a little bit biased toward the G.W. Grill because they have live entertainment as well. The whole map of Edgewater and its surrounding landmarks has changed since we filled in our version back when I went to school (It’s probably changed since I started writing this article). The Borough Hall is in a different location, River Road is wider, and all the factories that lined the waterfront are gone, replaced by malls and apartment complexes. Fort Lee is about to turn into a Donald Trump Fantasy Land and nothing will stop it now. The best we can hope for is that the tables in its restaurant won’t get all cramped together.

She announced no plans, but the Tenafly resident has left the district. Named as her successor is Kerry Salerno Postma, 39, who has been principal of the George Washington School since it opened two years ago. Prior to that she was vice principal of the Eleanor Van Gelder School under then superintendent Ted Blumstein, now retired. She joined the local school system as vice principal in 2011. She will continue as principal of George Washington until a successor is hired. A new salary of $145,000 was approved at a special Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 30. She will be meeting shortly with school trustees to set new district priorities. Chief among them will be addressing the expanding school population. Also of concern is student literacy and infusing STEM education – science technology, engineering and math. Ms. Postma has served as a councilor in the Moon-

achie School system and has taught in the Waldwick schools sixth and seventh grade for seven years and also taught the fourth grade in Franklin Lakes. The school district has an enrollment of some 900 students from pre-kindergarten through Grade 6. Seventh graders through high school are bussed to Leonia schools under a sending arrangement.

Edgewater loses a pier for strolling on the Hudson

Hall A relic from the industrial era of the borough, a wide pier that extended some 160 feet out into the Hudson River, built some 80 years ago by Unilever and restored by IPark as part of the Hudson Harbor development on what had been the Unilever site, was all but destroyed by a raging fire early Wednesday, June 25. The gleamingly fresh wood walkway was turned into a blackened, charred hulk. Sadly, it had been one of the most appealing places to stroll out over the river to catch cooling river breezes along the three and a half-mile Edgewater waterfront. One could watch the passing river traffic and observe the local geese and ducks

glide and walk about in the silted up shore line along long-abandoned loading spaces beside the pier. Fire Chief Thomas (TJ) Jacobson said he believed the fire was started by accident, possibly by a discarded cigarette. The official report on the fire will not be released until later this week. Although the borough has a fireboat it was of little use in this fire due to low tide at the time of the fire and the heavy silting that is typical of the Hudson’s western shore. Assisting local firemen were fire companies from Cliffside Park Fort Lee, Fairview, Englewood Cliffs, Leonia and Ridgefield. JULY 2014 | EDGEWATER RESIDENTIAL | 9

EVG’s graduating Class of 2014: 88 students

By Douglas E. Hall It was graduation time at Eleanor Van Gelder School on June 19 when 88 students were graduated from the sixth grade, completing their elementary school education in Edgewater. Most will attend the Leonia Middle School in the fall to begin 7th grade studies and most of these students will graduate from Leonia High School in 2020. Speaking at the commencement exercises, Chief School Administrator Lorraine Cella, in one of her last official acts in that position, suggested the advice of five prominent writers: author-journalist Hodding Carter, Spanish poet Antonio Machado, author-poet Maya Angelou, civil rights leader Rev Dr. Martin Luther King and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. Her advice though these distinguished leaders: Carter: “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots; the other wings.” “Will you remember your Edgewater roots, while you spread your wings and fly toward new opportunities,” Dr. Cella asked. Machado: “Traveler, there is no road. The road is made as one walks.” “How will you create your own path? Will you be a leader or a follower? What goals will you set for yourselves,” Dr. Cella asked. Angelou: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” “How will you welcome your new peers? What will you do with your new friendships? Will you be kind, courteous and honest,” Dr. Cella asked. King: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” “What will you do if you see that an injustice occurred? Will you remain silent or will you speak up? Will you be bold and courageous? Will you assist those who need your assistance? Or will you walk away silently,” Dr. Cella asked. And finally, she said, “Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to climb Mt. Everest said, ‘It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. How will you work on developing yourself? How will you approach every mountain, hill, and the inevitable valleys as you learn about yourself in relation to the world around you?’” And in closing she suggested, “Select the quote that speaks to you in some way and travel through your life spreading your wings, creating new paths, caring deeply for others, standing up for what you believe in and working to conquer to yourself. I wish you ongoing happiness and success. Congratulations.” A few days later students from Edgewater joined with those from Leonia and were graduated from Leonia High School. There were 167 in all. By Lynne Grasz Hall On Sunday, June 22nd over 80 Edgewater kids performed at the Hudson Dance Studio's bi-annual Recital at the Fair Lawn Community Center. Over 180 guests in the audience could enjoy performances in Ballet, Ballroom, Latin, Jazz and Hip Hop and beautiful costumes inspired by the show 'Cirque du Soleil'. The show also included professional performances by Hudson Dance Studio's dance instructors, among them Jevgeni Davidov who won the 2014 US National title in Argentine Tango and will be representing US at the World Cup in Buenos Aires August this year.
