Healthy Kids Day All Proceeds Benefit The Children’s Miracle Network and Camp Corral
On Saturday, April 16, the Eden Family YMCA and Reidsville Golden Corral are encouraging all kids and parents in Rockingham County to come to the Y for a play date and commit to being active every day. It’s all part of the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day™ – the nation’s largest health day for families. The free event, with suggested donations, will take place at the Eden Family YMCA from 10am-2pm and feature activities such as a 5K, Fun Run, relays, informative booths, giant inflatables, petting zoo, emergency management vehicles, food (with a cost), refreshments and more. As a leading nonprofit, strengthening community through healthy living, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. At a time when one in three children in the United States are overweight or obese (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), developing healthier habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever. As part of Healthy Kids Day, the Y encourages families to make play dates everyday as a simple way to become healthier, more active and connected! Please come join us for Healthy Kids Day on April 16, 2011 from 10am-2pm! For more information contact the Eden Family YMCA at (336) 623-8496. The 5K requires registration before the event or 8:30 am April 16, 2011 at the Eden Family YMCA.
through the town of about 1,300 residents, remnants of the past remind paddlers of the river's history. In the nineteenth century, Smith's River Navigation Company built rock wing dams and sluices to enable long, narrow batteaux to haul iron and grain to market in Danville. Shortly below the put-in, paddlers will pass the "Leaning Tower of Bassett," one of these later structures. Just downstream is the third of six bridges that span this section of the river. A short distance below the fifth bridge is Blackberry Creek, entering from river right. The Great Wagon Road crossed the Smith River nearby, providing a route for settlers migrating through the region in days gone by. The take-out is at the Great Road Access, the Smith River's newest river access point, which opened in September, 2010. Solutia Performance Films granted easements for the access and for an adjacent 500-foot-long trail. Plant manager Joe Stultz says, "This is our way of giving back to the community." Outings and meetings of the Dan
River Basin Association are open to the public without charge. For more information about the trip, contact trip coordinator Charlie Williams, 336-337-8843, chawilliams59@yahoo.com For membership and other information about the Dan River Basin Association visit www.danriver.org.

Held on the Home Front During WWII the United States was home to approximately 60 prisoner of war camps. About 380,000 Germans were imprisoned across the U.S. during WWII as part of the millions of Axis and Allied prisoners held across the world. These prisoners embody ageless and timely themes of war and peace, justice during times of war, human rights, international reconciliation and potential lessons for avoiding future conflicts. Held on the Home Front is a traveling Bus museum called “Traces WWII Museum” that illustrates the unknown story through narrative texts, artifacts and media. It will bring the US/World War II history to life for you. This unique exhibit will be in Rockingham County at the Reidsville Library located at 204 W. Morehead Street, Reidsville on April 12 from noon to 6pm. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to come out and learn more about our own history through this exhibit. For more detail contact the library at 349-8476.
