Made in America While Eco is hard at work producing highquality, defensive and advanced framing red lumber around the country, the company’s technical team led by Chief Technical Officer, Mark Vuozzo, is working to better control every aspect of the Eco’s quality control program. Now, Eco is blending the final constituent of its Eco Red Shield™ formulation in America. “At Eco, we take our quality control program seriously no matter the size of the batch being produced,” said Steve Conboy, President/ CEO, Eco Building Products. “We take pride in producing everything that goes into our Intellectual Property right here in America, as it has been our goal since inception, that our red lumber will one day be recognized as the true American Brand of Lumber. This is just another step in raising the bar even higher in our quality controls, achieving superior results in every step of our blending process,

In the process, they are providing countless jobs for the unemployed, shelter for the homeless, disaster relief support around the globe, and teaching others the skills to carry on safer, sustainable building practices. We are proud to help raise awareness of their amazing efforts.”

“I’m humbled by this story about my team and our efforts in

helping folks as we move our products into the main spotlight as the ‘most defensive lumber and product-line’ on the planet today,” says Steve Conboy, President/CEO, Eco Building Products. “After climate change disasters that we’re experiencing more and more, it’s the perfect stage for our products and we get to help a few families along the way.”

In tune with the release of this far-reaching publication,

Conboy has been invited to attend the UN’s InfoPoverty Global Conference 2014 as a Keynote Speaker, addressing topics focused on the provision of affordable housing solutions worldwide. The Infopoverty Program was started by the first Infopoverty World Conference, organized by OCCAM in 2001 with the European

Conboy has also recently received an appointment by the U.S. Department of Commerce to the District Export Council, and selected to speak as a panelist at the 2014 World Trade Conference (WTC) covering topics including the exportation of American products to emerging global markets. Eco has found success in this movement through multiple channels, including their innovation in the realm of American innovation and technology in materials science, which also received recognition at the 2013 Edison Universe Awards with an Edison GOLD.

“This is such an exciting opportunity and event for Eco. I can

only hope guys like Jim Clifton with Gallop show up as we support his theory as portrayed in the book ‘The Coming Jobs War’ here in the US,” says Conboy. “I get to speak to over forty Ambassadors and some forty Housing Minsters in one setting on how American manufacturers are the best suited to support small, affordable, high demand housing needs better than any other country in the world. It is my opinion that this could be the biggest job creation plan in the U.S. since the lumber industry has the potential to create more jobs than the automobile industry. If Capitol Hill truly supports American manufacturers and protects the export channels, we have a fighting chance to have a positive impact on our inevitable jobs war,” added Conboy.

News Truckloads of Eco’s iconic Eco Red Shield™ lumber have worked their way across interstate highways in the last few weeks from the company’s coating facilities to job sites in Houston and Dallas, where two multifamily projects are taking shape as the building season starts to hit full stride. One of Eco’s largest and busiest affiliates, Guthrie Lumber & Distribution in Austin, is a major driver behind the company’s growing regional popularity. Guthrie has over $4 million in inventory ready for Eco’s innovative coating process, which protects lumber from wood rot, termites, mold, and fire. The added fire protection is particularly attractive to builders in Texas following a string of multifamily structural fires throughout the state, including a welding-related fire in late March that destroyed a large apartment complex near downtown Houston, involving more than 200 emergency personnel.

26

Eco Goes Big in Texas With Eco Red Shield™ lumber protection, ignition time and temperature for combustion are dramatically increased, and smoke indexes significantly reduced, allowing residents to evacuate responders to get control of an emergency earlier. In a recent multifamily project in San Diego, builders reported the remarkable fire-inhibiting characteristics of Eco Red Shield lumber after a similar welding-related incident to one that brought down the structure in Houston. In New Jersey, draft legislation is being considered that may soon offer homeowners up to a $5,000 tax credit for rebuilding with whole-house eco-friendly, defensive products. “When will insurance providers realize that offering liability insurance discounts to builders and for those that build with some type of whole-house, code supported, lumber defense that could potentially mitigate costly 9

To increase capacity for a burgeoning defensive building

products industry, Eco has purchased additional automated coating equipment and the use of a facility currently operational in Augusta, Georgia. The newly acquired equipment is fully-functional and complete with automation, enabling the Company to obtain an increased output rate. In addition to the automated line, Eco will refurbish an existing production line under the provisions of the Company’s current quality control program, complete with pre and post-conditioning tunnels producing a higher quality finished product. The increased production capacity will allow Eco to reinforce its current market position in the Northeastern U.S. with respect to panel production to meet increasing big box demands.

Recently, Eco sold a whole-house pack into Omaha,

Nebraska and already the supply chain is calling for Eco Red Shield protected lumber. In the Pacific Northwest, Eco’s Salem facility remains fairly busy with lumber distributors like Shelter Products and Blazer Industries sending product in for coating services to support production jobsites in Texas, Colorado and prefab buildings heading off-shore into Hawaii. “The demand in the northeast started with one house, and today we are positioned with multiple coating lines and affiliate production facilities to

Once we raise the Eco Flag in the south, it is certain that the market will come to Eco for coating services because we are convincing the lumber industry Eco is the best in the business and here to stay,” added Conboy.

Also in support of the Company’s endeavors in the

development, production and distribution of eco-friendly protected lumber; the USDA recently published a press release No. 0041.14 titled, USDA Announces Support for Innovative, Sustainable Wood Building Materials to Protect Environment and Create Jobs.

“We are getting calls now as if Eco wrote this press release

because it sounds like it was written about Eco Red Shield and our online institute designed to train architects and engineers, www.IDBP.org, about the need to protect wood fiber strength, the carbon footprint, people that occupy the homes and the first responders during fires,” added Conboy. “We are excited to present our application to the USDA helping them understand what ECOB has been doing to raise the bar on wood framed buildings with protected lumber in highly impacted markets.”

ECO’S CALIFORNIA HEADQUARTERS EXPERIENCE THE DANGERS OF AN EXTENDED FIRE SEASON FIRSTHAND 50

Early Wildfire Season More than 26,000 acres in San Diego county have burned in one of the worst string of fires to hit the region in recent decades. With scorching temperatures and strong Santa Ana winds, at least 8 fires in Carlsbad, Camp Pendleton, and San Marcos—only minutes from Eco’s headquarters in Vista— erupted on May 13th, eventually requiring nearly 5,000 local, state, and federal firefighters and damaging or destroying at least 55 properties. Many were caught off guard by the unseasonal fires, which usually start much later in the summer months. With the entire state suffering from a prolonged drought and an unfortunate confluence of weather and wind, however, the flames soon spiraled out of control. “We get extreme fire behavior every 10 years and the drought doesn’t help,” Cal Fire Capt. Richard Cordova said in an interview with TIME on May 17. “This is 51

In a timely demonstration, Eco is building two additional model defensive homes for the Desert Crest project located in West Lancaster, California. Lancaster was once the epicenter of the “Power House Fire” that burned thousands of acres during a Santa Ana wind storm fueled by extreme heat. In past years, billions of dollars of damage have been incurred as a result of these destructive wildfires, most of which represent consumed housing stock in the region. This new housing development now under construction has been specified with Eco Red Shield protected lumber, representing this developer’s commitment to ensuring the safety of his customers and their homes being developed. www.ecob.net

Features While the regions affected by Hurricane Sandy have been working through the emotional toll, debris, mold issues and bureaucratic red tape, Eco has been hard at work developing and deploying some of the most advanced defensive building products available to ensure that families don’t have to relive the devastation in the years to come. Now, as the rebuild effort begins to pick up speed, Eco is out to find an army of builders like John at Straightedge to redefine how to build defensive homes and promote American quality-controlled, factory-built, flat-stacked houses for export, putting American Veterans to work and creating jobs around the United States. Eco is unveiling two Eco Home™ models—one in Breezy Point, NY and another in the Jersey Shore in Sea Bright—to showcase the leading edge in defensive building materials and designs and inspire communities to better prepare for future extreme weather events. Both models are nearing completion after a lengthy approval process and harsh winter, and Eco is gearing up to feature the homes in its upcoming Defensive Home Tour, which will highlight steel columns, Eco Red Shield™ technology, and other building products and methodologies designed to maximize engineering values and protect properties from floods, high winds, and fires.

68

A Billion Dollar Blight The emerald ash borer—a devastating insect that has already established itself in several areas in the Great Lakes region—is projected to cause upwards of one billion dollars in damages per year over the next decade as it wreaks havoc on local ash tree populations. The insect originally came to the US by way of wood pallets used to import goods. These pallets are often reused for many years, and are notorious for hosting a variety of invasive insect species that can quickly spread out of control. International standards now mandate expensive fumigation or heat trea™ent of wooden pallets and crates to prevent importing these expensive pests, representing nearly $500 million in upfront costs for shipping companies. Preventative treatment is economically beneficial, however, when the cumulative

By protecting wood from termites and other insects like the emerald ash borer, Eco Red Shield™ can help stop the spread of invasive insects through global imports, as well as extending the life cycle of wooden pallets which represent 2 percent of all municipal waste and over 20 percent of all wood waste. With its GREENGUARD certification, Eco Red Shield™ would also bring the VOC counts of raw wood and painted pallets significantly, making them safer for workers to handle and making indoor environments healthier. With all these benefits in mind, maybe its time the supply chain industry got a little greener by making their pallets a little redder.
