STABLE INSTEAD OF DISCO

While many farmers in the Tyrol are closing their barn doors for good, ANNA MOSER in Steinberg is looking to expand. The 22-yearold is probably one of the youngest farmers in the region.

Anyone who looks at Steinberg from the Obermooshof will understand why Anna Moser would not want to change this job for any other. No matter how hard the work is on the farm. What makes this situation special is that Anna is only 22 years old. But she is determined to take over her parents’ farm and run it successfully.

When Anna Moser finished her Matura after five years at the agricultural college in Kematen, she started an office job, but she didn’t like it very much. She quit after six months and had a new job lined up. But then the Corona virus struck and nothing came of the new job. So her parents hired her to work on the farm at home. A stroke of luck, says Anna looking back: “Now I wonder why I didn’t realise much sooner that this was what I wanted to do.”

Anna Moser is currently the official “farm manager” of Obermooshof, as her parents have retired. She will become the owner in a year’s time, and the farm, which dates back to the 15th century, will become an “Erbhof” (hereditary farm) in two years’ time. The Moser family will then have been farming for 200 years. At the moment the property is a fattening farm for Tyrolean mountain cattle with about 30 head, but Anna would like to go back to dairy farming and look after more animals.

You can tell that this young farmer has had a solid education when she talks. But she says she learned the most during her compulsory work experience: “Especially about work. I spent 14 weeks in Sweden on a big farm. For 13 weeks we complained about all the work, and when it came to the 14th week we were sad that we had to go home”. Perhaps that’s why, despite her diminutive stature, she doesn’t see the chores on the farm as work: “When we are full, it takes me four hours a day to do the stable work. But that is just part of the job, it is not work for me.”
